NICHOLAS H. TEETELLI United States
Nicholas Teetelli is both a published and international awardwinning fine art photographer. He was born in New York City and grew up in lower Manhattan’s iconic Greenwich Village. During the late 1960s, and well into the 1970s, the Village was a hotbed of culture and the arts. During this period, Teetelli was introduced to art and photography, developing an interest in what would become his lifelong passion. While he took some photography courses in college, Nicholas Teetelli is primarily self-taught. Spanning the last four decades, he has learned, developed, and honed his skills independently, becoming an avid and serious amateur photographer who has recently turned professional. Although he lived and grew up in New York City, he spent his summers in the Greek islands and has traveled to many other places throughout the world. He continues to travel in pursuit of unforgettable photographic images. During each journey, with camera in hand, he records much of what he sees, sharing the impression of his mind’s eye through composition, light play, and shape and design. His photographic portfolio is diverse: it includes landscape, architecture, portrait, flora and fauna, underwater, and street photography. He has recently brought his portfolio to the public eye and, and in short order, has had dozens of his photographs juried and invited into exhibition at many galleries and museums throughout the United States, receiving many accolades and awards for this work along the way. He has won awards in international competitions such as in Moscow, London and Tokyo has been a featured artist at major art shows at Art San Diego, Spectrum Miami, ArtExpo New York, has had private gallery placements in Vienna, Austria and Bologna, Italy, as well as being a featured gallery artist on various cruise ship lines. He almost exclusively uses Leica cameras and lenses, which yield superior results for him. But has also recently added a Hasselblad medium format camera to his bag. This is the fourth volume of our series Important World Artists, following the positive acclaim that the first three volumes met. This volume presents the work of 70 outstanding artists, each of whom is at the height of their creative power. Almost all media are represented here – painting, drawing, mixed media, sculpture, installations, photography, digital art and more. And as usual in our books, almost every region of the world is represented. We believe that this volume, as our previous ones, will constitute an invaluable sourcebook for curators, art consultants, gallery directors, interior designers, other art professionals, and also educators and students, as well as for art lovers everywhere. Like our previous books, this publication also should constitute a bright addition to the mosaic-chronical of contemporary art world wide, which we are creating and expanding with each successive volume of our books.

10 - Jean Jacques Porret - Important World Artists Vol. 4
Born in Switzerland, in 1941, to a prominent family of art and antique collectors, Jean Jacques Porret started to sculpt wood at a very young age. “I was drawn to and learned the technique of bronze and lost wax casting because it is the most demanding material which is responsive and sweet to the touch. My work is figurative but is not about the figure. I consider myself an expressionist as I am more interested in communicating an abstract feeling or idea than an actual image.” Jean Jacques Porret’s surreal sculptures transcend the mere human form they represent and instead draw the viewer in with their delicate expressionism, rhythmic movement, and abstract sensuality. The work is never about the figure, but the emotions expressed in the tension of his fluid curves and precarious balance. Though abstract in nature, the recognizable form and innate humanity residing within each piece are impossible to ignore. Thus, we are given a case study in restraint, with the artist utilizing the best aspect of each genre without clouding his final result, creating a selfstyled harmony Porret simply describes as “rhythm in space”..

Roza Janabayeva was born in 1963 in Kazakhstan. She graduated from TARSU with a degree in hydraulic engineer in 1985. Despite the mathematical thinking and technical skills, Roza has always been an artist. From an early age, she was busy making jewelry, designing clothes, working with clay and sewing; essentially, creating things. However, only at the age of 50 she completely devoted herself to art by joining the studio of Nadezhda Filatova (an alumna of Saint Petersburg Academy of Arts after I.Repin) who has helped Roza to find her technique and an individual direction in art.

Lisa Rickard, born in Philadelphia, is a figure painter currently residing in Florida. She attended Temple University’s Tyler School of Art and then the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design. After receiving her degree, she continued to draw the nude model regularly and developed her visual communication skills further by graphically designing and technically illustrating on a consecutive full-time basis for an advertising agency, design firm and a corporate marketing department in a global organization. As a ZUMBAŽ fitness dance leader, she created custom choreography which served to enrich her artistic anatomy knowledge and expressive design of human form. In 2019, Capella, the first figure painting in her series honoring all nude artist models was juried into two gallery exhibits in the United States, a finalist in the 14th International Art Renewal Center Salon, and published in the Dec/Jan2020 issue of International Artist Magazine. Her elegant timeless allegorical nudes evoke the dignity yet vulnerability of our shared human condition keeping Lisa at the easel.

“Early as an abstract painter, my focus was on musical energy and movement, later moving to still lives and landscapes varying from an impressionistic style to a vividly idealized view. I am seeking the energy of my original work, keeping techniques learned along the way. For the last 30 years, my paintings have been in that many gallery exhibitions also hanging in many private and corporate collections. Anne Swan Moore was born in San Antonio, Texas and lives in San Diego. 30 - Atom Hovhanesyan - Important World Artists Vol. 4
(19 August 1981 - 10 May 2018) NY-based artist working in oil/ink, Atom Hovhanesyan was born and raised in Armenia. He started as a self-taught artist and studied in Art Students League of NY, and National Academy. Atom began copying old master drawings (Leonardo, Raphael, Del Sarto, Pontormo, Tintoretto) as well as portrait work. He continued studies after Seurat drawings, Van Gogh and Cezanne. “I understood that most art movements have roots in preceding ideas, and saw all art as one interlinked continuous chain, and so I started studying old masterworks and rigorously copying paintings and drawings of different eras in art with a focus on post-impressionism, and decided to attempt to become a complete painter as were Kandinsky, Gorky and De Kooning.” Hovhanesyan continued with studies of Post-impressionist masters. He studied art history as a whole, focusing on high renaissance, baroque, romanticism, realism and impressionism. Attempting to connect and understand the influences of modern masters and movements, such as Cubism, Futurism, Abstract expressionism, he continued a study of color theory as well as refining the actual process of grinding his own colors. Post Divisionist works Influenced by post-impressionism with a cubist approach to the picture plane, the goal was to utilize the whole surface of the support challenging the viewer’s perception of negative space. Essentially divisionist with an optical approach to coloration, the figure/ composition is woven into the fabric of the plane and space warps into the figure. In the painting process, repetitive, almost automatic, application of the crosshatched lines allows the subconscious the opportunity to direct the composition, there is a tension between the desire to hide vs. the need to reveal, a conflict between the subconscious and self-conscious. Ink Drawings “The seemingly chaotic application of lines (crosshatches) is intentional, I’m trying to follow in line of the post divisionist paintings, creating a unified fabric of the plane, modeling with parallel hatch marks would go against this, and would make it more of a plastic approach, and would emphasize the distinction of background foreground. In short, I’m trying to arrive at impressionistic use of ink as the medium with a surreal or symbolic mindset.” And after colossal dedication to art, some times, 72 hours non stop painting or drawing, unintentionally or maybe subconsciously created unique, unrepeatable style and technique in post divisionism and ink drawings, never observed before.

“There is much beauty to behold in this world, moments that the eye captures, the wonders it sees... moments that should be committed to perpetual memory, but sadly only to become fragments of a faded recollection, or more often, simply forgotten. I draw inspiration to record these timeless and special moments, to capture them in my mind’s eye, and through my lens, transforming each image and committing them to permanent form.”

Joanna Tlok resides in Michigan, USA. She studied art at the National Academy of Fine Arts in Wroclaw, Poland. Her artwork has been recognized and awarded in numerous art competitions and is in many private and corporate collections. Throughout the years, eight professional art galleries represented her artwork. She was a part of 26 individual and group art exhibitions; most recent show at the Art Fair, Spectrum Miami, Florida. Joanna’s first experience in art making came when she was seven years old. After years of formal training in visual arts and work as a professional artist and a teacher in Poland, Tlok immigrated to the United States with her family in 1991, where she continues her career with a new audience. In her long profession as an artist, she changed the subject matter of her paintings several times but in the last 20 years, her art portfolio is based on examination of fabric where Tlok finds gratification in bringing us uncommon studies of the commonplace. Fabric is so ubiquitous and plays such a huge role in everyday life that people seldom take the time to appreciate it. This is what Tlok shows to us by making simple fabric the subject of thoughtful paintings.

“I want my paintings to be like an optical dialogue, each patch of color is part of a dialectic process where each surface is trying to establish itself. In my paintings, there is a conflict between luminosity and density, a struggle between quantity and quality, tension between gravity and lightness. I aim to find a rhythmic balance between the forces at play. A crucial part of my technique is pointillism and juxtaposition. I use pointillism but do not aim to reconstruct the optical phenomena of light. I aim to create depth and movement by juxtaposing different shapes, colors of different sizes. This is all put together to depict a theme important to me at that time.”

Pastel Heart Mixed media on canvas
Wendy Cohen is a Sydney-based artist who has attained a BFA as well as MFA Degrees. Her art practice focuses on the relationship of color, shape, line, and form with realistic components that are communicated in a painterly language. By integrating shapes into a cohesive body of colors and forms in conjunction with collage elements, flowing ideas are arbitrarily manifested that bring attention to the brushstrokes, mark-making, and materiality on the surface of each painting. However, the primary focus of her practice is to transform the static space of each painting with synchronized contrasting colors highlighting its chemistry and resonance.

I have worked for many years to develop a technique suitable for my purpose. I use metals a lot: gold, silver, brass, copper, aluminum, tin, smoked silver, palladium, platinum. G. PACK United States “Throughout life, I’ve noticed myself to be two things: Quiet and Sensitive to my surroundings. Painting has served as my response to both of those qualities. The ability to paint has given me a voice to express feeling without the use of any words. As my range and confidence in painting has grown larger over time, so has the volume and depth of that voice. Many of the pieces in this collection are results from uncomfortable experiences. Jealousy, Insecurity, Loneliness, Spite, Pride, and the hunger for Glory have all been common causes of motivation and inspiration. When I’m content with life I feel no need to create because all is well and nothing needs to be said. It is only when life is broken, hectic, or miserable that I feel like it’s time for me to finally speak out. Instead of physically telling you how I feel, I find it much easier to show you. For me, art is simply a way of turning a painful situation into something that I can be proud of.”

“My lifelong passion for the visual arts was nurtured by a childhood spent in the beautiful farm country of northern Maine. Growing up, I had an exceptional gift to reproduce inanimate objects to perfection. At Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts, I studied the human figure and was introduced to intaglio printmaking. I also studied drawing at The School of Visual Arts in New York City. HERBERT HERMANS The Netherlands
Herberts’ work consists mainly of oil paintings, with his major theme being industrial and cultural heritage. Sources of inspiration for his paintings are abandoned and often ruinous buildings. He records these often before demolition by photographs and sketches. Use of colour and use of light make his paintings special events. Dark disconsolateness is changing into light and warmth. Regularly he adds characters into his paintings who provide another or an extra dimension to the image. The tension in their relationship is sometimes nearly tangible.
Time Is On My Side Oil on canvas 120 x 80 cm
“In my artwork, I am inspired by architecture, particularly industrial and cultural heritage. My interest in industrial and cultural architectural forms started during my secondary school when I wished to become an architect. My drawing-master was Jan Asselbergs, a famous Dutch painter. He stimulated me to elaborate on this work. During the past decades, the scope of my work has expanded. Now I like to draw the viewers’ attention to a reality that is not to be seen at first sight. I am fascinated by perspectives, precision and colour to create in an eclectic way a strange environment for people in historical and often ruinous buildings. My style is realistic, but I like to avoid photorealism. Despite the images’ realism they maintain an air of fantasy. The paintings are immersed in a sometimes surreal aura that highlights the ‘incredible’. As a result, my work parallels multiple layers of perception. By transforming what seems to be real, I hope to reveal the complex and mysterious dimensions of reality.”

PRISCILLA DALE JONES United States
Good Earth, Spring Color digital photograph
Blue Sail, Sunset Color digital photograph
Priscilla Dale Jones was born on the East Coast and currently resides in Maryland. She took her first photographs as a young child growing up in Coronado, California, a small town on the Pacific Ocean, with a Kodak Brownie Hawkeye her father gave her. His enthusiasm for photography inspired her. Other cameras followed, and she often carried one with her, particularly whenever she traveled and, sometimes, during graduate studies in history at UCLA, in Israel, and at the University of Cambridge. At present a historian by profession and a photographer by avocation, she has focused increasingly on macro photography and on experimenting with ways to capture water and its many forms. She is particularly interested in ephemeral, overlooked details and in exploring miniature worlds hidden in ordinary objects; and in the relationship of color, light, shadow, form, perception, and imagination. The forms in her abstract photographs are unrepeatable and invite an interaction between the image and the imagination of the viewer.

Blue Mountains Acrylic on canvas 100 x 100 cm
“I began to paint in 1998 inspired by my astrological studies. My astrology teacher asked me to follow my creativity, an ability I knew nothing else about. I started painting, and my first 10 pictures depicted astrology and the strength of each of the 10 planets used in astrology. I have been painting ever since, and today I work with acrylic and canvas or paper, creating big and colorful pictures. Playing with the colors is a constant source of joy and pleasure for me. Every time I start with a new canvas or paper, I’m curious to see what’s coming. The process is unpredictable and the result as well. Shapes and colors. Small creatures, angels and birds. Sun, sea, mountains, flowers, trees. Faces with big eyes and features that come from a distant past or another planet. It grows as I work, and when I find it in the picture, I grab it and shape it. We collaborate, the image and I. Or I leave it alone and let the colors come out with their own symphonies and compositions.”

Sound Garden (Interactive Environment), 2011 Painted aluminum and plastic tubes, sensors, sound generators, UV light 540 x 300 x 260 cm
About Sound Garden This interactive installation is based on the principle of simultaneous and multi-viewpoints of space vision, or as I call it: Polyphonic Visual Space. It consists of 15 different twisted form elements equally located in space in such a way that visitors can pass through the installation in any direction. On each form there are infrared sensors connected to programmable sound generators. The elements are lit by UV light. As the visitors pass through the form segments they interrupt the invisible infrared light beams, generating the pre-programmed voice. Forty sound generators are located at the end of the form segments each and they all broadcast different sounds by the motion of one or more visitors. In this way the visitor(s) can generate coincidental or composed music or sound effects. As a first step, I have already programmed the basic scale of sound using a piano as basis. The outcome was frenetic. A group of people could compose music with their synchronized movement or in case they are unsynchronized (as would be the case more often) could create a chaotic interactive experience. Since the sound generators are reprogrammable they would give a great variation for voice and sound creations.

With its novelty, scale and conception the introduced multimedia environment was the milestone within the fields of the national and international fine arts. He pioneered the direction of the computer-guided, projected, programmed space-installation. Next year he was invited by the Budapest Mücsarnok to introduce his environment, which he extended with two new elements. This was followed by exhibitions in Ankara, Bergen and Oslo, Bratislava/ Pozsony, London, Munich, New York etc.

When my beloved father passed away, I found particular peace and solace in being creative and expressing my feelings through my art. Through my particular approach to the abstract medium, I wish to bring a unique sense of spirituality to my art.

That these nebulas, I create, can give us a good healthy perspective about ourselves and our humble but significant place in the scheme of this vast universe. My hope is that, when people view and reflect upon my work, it will lift them up and inspire them to slow down, take a deep breath, allow their worries to fade, and be truly present in the moment. CHARLIE PARKER United Kingdom
Ashley Oils 40 x 50 cm
Adrian Simpson, Principle, JBC Durham University Oils
Born in 1968, Charlie Parker spent his early life in Leeds, Yorkshire. It was during these early formative years that a love of painting and drawing was gained. He is entirely self-taught and has painted and drawn seriously since the early 1990s. Charlie also attends regular life-drawing classes and studies the great masters at museums, when possible. Olga Puzanova is a member of the Union of Artists of Russia and the International Art Fund. Born in 1970, she lives and works in Moscow. Olga studied at the Moscow Art School “Memory of 1905”, at the Moscow state art Institute named after V. I. Surikov, Department of monumental painting. Olga is a follower of the traditions of the Russian Socialist Realism movement. Her painting techniques, consonant with such great masters as V. D. Polenov, I. E. Repin, intersect in space with the bright juicy impressionism of the French masters of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. On the example of severe Northern impressionism, her art opens the viewer a deeper look at this world. Olga perfectly knows the techniques of this form of painting. She sees the world vividly, succulently and picturesquely for all its simplicity and complexity. Since 1992, she has participated in exhibitions of works by Russian artists in Russia and in Germany (in Cologne, in Frankfurt am Main). Her works are in private collections in France, Germany, England, Russia (gallery Union-Creativity, Magenta Art Gallery, N-prospect, etc.)

“I was born in France in 1982. I arrived in Switzerland at the age of 9 years, and I’ve been living here ever since. Working in commerce for 20 years now, I’ve always had a creative side. I had a regular opportunity to put it into practice in my profession. And I’m convinced that was what I liked the most. I was convinced that I could go in that direction without knowing how... I discovered my passion for painting in 2017. Obsessed with an abstract form when I woke up on a spring morning, I had this image in my head for days, and I was struggling to get it out, in vain. I had been looking for a painting. From then on, I bought all the necessary equipment, and I commenced to paint. This first painting, I named it “Style aborigène”. I loved this moment of freedom, of creativity. This feeling of being useful to myself. Since then I have created a workshop in my living room. Over time my apartment has become a workshop. More than a passion, I consider this a renaissance. I think it was painting that chose me and not the other way around.”

“I am fascinated by having a blank canvas, painting it and thus having to tell a story; knowing that each person will create his or her story by seeing it. The interpretation of a canvas is captivating. It is difficult for me to explain my technique, indeed according to my day, week lived, I have not a single technique, I work a lot according to my emotions. I can only say that I mainly use linen canvases, I paint with everything that is in my workshop. Brushed obviously but also with knives which I use almost for every canvas. I also paint with fishing wire, pieces of wood, all types of brushes but also with the fingers. I have found my style in other abstract or contemporary art. There are so many universes, ideas, colors and shapes that I try a little bit of. Maybe that’s my style, not having one...”

“I remember reading some time ago that when Pablo Picasso was asked how long did it take to do a particular art piece, he responded, “all my life”. This sentiment is particularly evident in my current series. In this series, “Visual Moments”, I am trying to capture a visual glimpse of an image that caught my attention, made me pause for a brief moment and then became my personal reminder of a specific place in time. I knew I wanted to use maps from these places in my series. The maps would provide the viewer a context for each image, as well as a reminder of the influences man has on nature.. I chose not to draw directly on the maps. Therefore, cutting and pasting the map around the drawing. Besides not liking the paper quality for rendering, I wanted the visual imagery to have strong contrast and clean edges against the soft negative space of the maps. This became important, as a moment remembered does not always include detailed accuracy rather a recollection.. As I was working out the ideas of these pieces, I became fascinated with how I can no longer separate the fine artist from the designer in my work. This has resulted in the emergence of Hand Rubbed Collagraphs capturing seasons spent with close up views of color images on black paper.”

SÉRAPHINE United States A letter Seraphine wrote to Georgia O’Keefe after meeting with her 42 years ago Dear Miss O’Keefe, You asked me why I came to your country, your home, your studio, your space… I did not truly take the proper time to consider and answer the precise question asked. Before arriving at your door, I was coming to you to learn whatever the time and events had put to in front of me. I was open to, “Qué Séra, Séra.” You said if I had seen the special about your career. The answer yes, was not true. I did not see it on purpose, as I did not want to be influenced by what the special had to say about you. I have only seen about 6 of your paintings and had only just barely touched the giant book about your work. Now that I have spoken with you, I am prepared to expose myself to what those authors had to say about you. I stated that I felt “like a sister” and only practically elaborated on those words. Because of the way I respect the earth and look nature, I saw in your work, the respect I have for these elements. When I saw your painting dealing with the bones of the desert, I saw myself… only many years apart, career-wise. For I have look at water, and water-drops, and their shapes, as you have studied the bones and flowers. Leaves and water have gotten people to notice the fact that I can put this down and by showing my paintings to “the people”, I have been getting others (including those in the cement, chrome and glass world) to stop for a moment and take a look… first at my paintings and later at their reality.

I do not want to become known as the painter of waterdrops. I do not want to become known as the painter of leaves.I do want to be a fine artist painter… and I want to learn as much as this lifetime has to give me. I feel that I can identify strongly with you as you have gone before me as a woman and as an artist, and the “earth” has taken you seriously. I too am 100% serious about my work, otherwise I would not have been so bold as to respectfully approach you… on your terra… a su terra. I came to your homeland with respect for you and had you not allowed me into your space, I still would have been very happy. Happy to have been allowed the time to be quiet and pleased with myself for taking the direction I have taken. I was prepared to leave, had you asked me to; I was prepared to stay and learn from you, which I did I would have stayed to learn had it been for an hour, day, week, and month… or however long my learning time had to be. I came to you. I learned from you, and I thank you kindly. I have been pleased to shake you hand and speak with you. But most of all I am pleased you allowed me the learning time and the opportunity to “see” beyond my 29 years. You have inspired me to paint my entire lifetime. With great love and respect, I am… Séraphine

SHIMA SHANTI United States
Whitewater Impressionistic Encaustic painting of water in motion created from beeswax, pigment, and fire 36 x 36 in.
Shima Shanti paints with beeswax, pigment, and fire, the ancient art form called Encaustic. Her impressionistic paintings of water in motion are inspired by the natural elements. In her studio, she experiments with the unpredictable and mercurial qualities of beeswax. Layering bold brushstrokes of molten wax and natural pigments onto birch panel she creates a rough-yet-refined texture. Then firing with heat she smooths the wax to a satin finish creating a depth of luminosity that draws the viewer beneath the surface. Growing up in big sky Montana forever connected her with nature, giving her an innate sense of color and composition. She never expected to become a collected abstract impressionistic painter. However, years after moving to San Diego, California, and after an established career in the corporate world, Shima felt that unrelenting desire that we all have to create. > Within the Grasp Impressionistic Encaustic painting of water in motion created from beeswax, pigment, and fire 36 x 36 in.
