THE NEWSLETTER FOR LUCKLEY HOUSE SCHOOL

FUN TIME AT LUCKLEY

Following the whole-school exams week, Year 9 and 10 pupils took part in FUN TIME (Fostering Unity Nurturing Time In Meaningful Enrichment). This embodies our commitment to creating a supportive and inclusive environment where our pupils can thrive, both academically and socially.

The program is designed to offer pupils a wide variety of onand off-site activities, including challenges focused on developing teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills. The events included an escape room, dingbats, spider’s web, a two-minute play, a ‘what three words’ scavenger hunt around the school, a casualty evacuation (casevac) relay, and a stalking game, where the pupils followed sounds to locate their teammates.

MUSICAL INTERLUDE....

PREP CHORAL DAY

At the start of the summer term we had a fantastic day of singing when we held our choral workshop. 150 children from feeder schools came together for a day of singing arrangements accompanied by a pupil and staff band. The visiting staff also joined in and circa 200 parents came to watch an impressive performance at the end of the day.

MUSIC FOR YOUTH FINALISTS!

On Friday 5 July the Junior Choir travelled to Birmingham to perform in the national finals of ‘Music for Youth’, after successfully securing a place in the Oxford regionals. They will have to wait and see if they are selected for the Youth Proms at the Albert Hall in the autumn.

MUSIC TOUR TO BELGIUM

At the end of term the Music Department will be taking our Chamber Choir and Wind Ensemble on tour to Belgium. They will be based in Ghent and will perform three concerts in Ghent, Bruges and Brussels, including Brussels Cathedral.

MID-SUMMER FESTIVAL

On a lovely summer’s evening at the Luckley House Friends’ MidSummer Festival, the school community enjoyed performances by our Senior Rock School, various soloists and Upper Sixth students, Ricardo and Archie duetting popular classics.

A ‘WICKED’ END TO TERM

We took a large group of Music Scholars, GCSE and A Level students and members of ensembles to see ‘Wicked’ in the West End. The trip supported the listening and appraising aspect of their course. It was the perfect way to celebrate a fantastic year of music performances and events with a live performance experience.

AN EVENING OF JAZZ AND POP

A fabulous way to end a busy year of music with performances from all our ensembles and choirs, plus lots of solo performances ranging from Frank Sinatra to Adele.

GERMAN CULTURE TRIP

Year 8 pupils had a fabulous trip to the Goethe-Institut London, Germany’s renowned cultural institute that promotes German language and culture worldwide.

They participated in a quiz about German cities and watched a German film about an English teacher who introduced soccer to Germany in the late 19th century by teaching it to his students. The film captivated the pupils, making it a timely viewing experience with Euro 2024 approaching in Germany.

After the film, they enjoyed a delicious German-inspired lunch at Stein’s Berlin in Kensington, featuring Bratwurst and sauerkraut.

BRAVE THE SHAVE!

One of our minibus drivers, Mr Gary Peacock, 'braved the shave' and raised over £1,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support. He had been growing his beard for six weeks in preparation. Many thanks to Mrs Hynds for taking on the role of barber!

EXCELLENCE IN LANGUAGES

The new Excellence in Languages Club has enjoyed a variety of talks this term.

Former student Virginia Saffin, who is currently studying French as part of her degree at university, talked about the differences between studying a language at school and at university, and the process of organising a year abroad.

We were also joined by Mrs R Bingley, a professional translator who previously worked for the EU in Brussels. She talked about her journey from student to professional, and her broad range of experiences working in languages.

Mrs J Scott-Dye, a solicitor who spent a year in France while studying for her degree, discussed the benefits of undertaking a year abroad, which does not have to be as part of a degree in languages – any university student can participate.

Although invitations went out to students who are particularly motivated in languages, it has been fantastic to see so many students taking part.

ISA ESSAY WRITING IST AND 2ND!

In February the English Department invited pupils from all year groups to participate in the ISA Essay Writing Competition, offering various entry categories for each grade level. We received many outstanding submissions and are thrilled to announce that Ella D and Tabby W from Year 12 secured 1st and 2nd place, respectively, in the English Literature category for their analytical essays on Shakespeare's tragedy ‘Othello.’ This remarkable achievement highlights their exceptional analytical skills and dedication.

EARTH DAY

On Friday 24 April we celebrated Luckley Earth Day with a series of engaging and educational activities.

The day began with tutor groups enjoying a lively Kahoot quiz, where they answered questions about sustainability and biodiversity.

During lunchtime pupils from various year groups participated in a somewhat challenging wildflower hunt. They were tasked with matching descriptions of wildflowers to their corresponding pictures hidden around the woods. This activity sparked puzzlement and discussion as pupils tried to identify plants, such as garlic mustard and greater stitchwort.

The celebration continued in our eco-garden, where several pupils contributed by adding oxygenating plants to the new pond. Their efforts helped enhance the garden's ecosystem, making it a more vibrant and sustainable space.

Mrs Katie Clutterbuck, Eco-Schools Lead

DIVING AT VOBSTER QUAY

Our scuba divers recently visited Vobster Quay to complete the final stages of their Open Water, Advanced Open Water, and Rescue Diver courses. The weather was fantastic and everyone enjoyed themselves while completing five different dives and exploring various sunken landmarks.

PGL TRIP

Before May half term we had the pleasure of taking our Lower School pupils to The Ultimate Activity Centre in North Devon. Despite very changeable weather, we had a lovely time. The pupils took part in activities such as surfing, coasteering, archery, mountain boarding and high ropes. We also really enjoyed visiting The Big Sheep soft play centre. The highlight of the trip was seeing pupils challenge themselves: whether it was the drop slides at Big Sheep or jumping from cliffs in coasteering; courage was the theme of the trip!

Mrs Holly Duxbury, Assistant Head of Section (Lower School)

JUNIOR DRAMA PRESENTS ‘FAIRY TALES’

The Junior Drama Club showcased their rendition of ‘The Brothers Grimm Fairy Tales’. Since September they had been modifying these delightful stories to practise a variety of dramatic techniques. The students explored puppeteering, mime, and musical theatre. For many cast members, this was their first performance at The Whitty Theatre and they were thrilled to debut in front of friends and family.

YEAR 9 PERFORM ‘LORD OF THE FLIES’

Year 9 pupils performed Lord of the Flies, a challenging and complex yet incredibly exciting piece. The production showcased an abundance of talent, offering an immersive experience with characters running through the audience, dead pigs, smoking fires, a rock soundtrack and a sense of general anarchy!

SPEECH & DRAMA SHOWCASE

We enjoyed a delightful evening under the Luckley trees in the warm sunshine, celebrating the achievements of our Speech and Drama students. They showcased their talent by performing duologues and monologues for friends and family. This year the students excelled in both LAMDA and Trinity exams, achieving outstanding results. Special congratulations to Reese V and James B on achieving their Grade 8 Trinity and LAMDA awards.

EXPLORING DIFFERENT FAITHS

Year 10 GCSE Religious Studies students embarked on an enriching trip to Oxford, visiting the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies and the University Church of St Mary the Virgin. This excursion provided an excellent opportunity for our students to deepen their understanding of Muslim and Christian traditions, enhancing their curriculum studies with real-world experiences.

Our first stop was the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies. Students were given a guided tour of the centre, exploring its stunning architecture and beautiful gardens, and learned about the centre’s mission to promote understanding and dialogue between Islamic and Western cultures. The highlight of the visit was a fascinating lecture by one of the resident scholars, who discussed her personal faith journey as a convert to Islam. The students were engaged and asked thoughtful questions, reflecting their keen interest and curiosity.

After a leisurely lunch in one of Oxford’s charming parks, we proceeded to the University Church of St Mary the Virgin.

This busy and historic church provided a stark contrast to the modernity and quiet of the Islamic Centre. Our guide eloquently explained the church’s significant role in the history of the University of Oxford and its continuing importance as a place of worship and community gathering.

Overall the trip was a resounding success, providing our students with a unique and valuable educational experience. We are incredibly proud of their enthusiasm and respectful engagement throughout the day.

Mrs Clem Woolner, Head of Religious Studies

GEOGRAPHY FIELDTRIP TO SWANAGE

Our intrepid Year 11 Geographers enjoyed a fieldtrip to Swanage in Dorset at the end of April. It is a compulsory element of the course that a day of ‘Human’ and a day of ‘Physical’ fieldwork is undertaken in preparation for Paper 3 of their GCSE exams. Swanage is the perfect place for this trip, as we spent a day in and around Swanage Bay and then either Poole or Swanage town for the ‘Human’ element, and the usual questionnaires with unsuspecting elderly residents!

Great fun was had by all; the weather was lovely, the YHA accommodation spot on, and the food was good. Most importantly, the students learnt huge amounts about the process of fieldwork investigations and the different ‘Human’ and ‘Physical’ variations of this.

Mr James Samson, Head of Geography

CHEMISTRY CHALLENGE

Our Year 12 Chemists (along with two Year 10 Chemists) participated in the Cambridge Chemistry Challenge (C3L6). This annual test, created by Cambridge University's Chemistry Department, features questions linking Chemistry to current affairs, historical applications, and real-world uses. This year’s topics included arsenic's historical uses and ‘forever chemicals’ (perfluorinated alkyl substances).

The Challenge pushes students to apply Year 12 Chemistry in unique ways, with awards reflecting the difficulty. For instance, a Copper Award in 2023 required 18 out of 70 marks.

The Year 12 candidates were Amelia S (Copper), Helge P (Silver) and Ivy L (Copper).

Year 10 students, Heinrich P and Jayden J also entered with Jayden achieving a Gold certificate, which is an incredible achievement, and Heinrich narrowly missing out on a Copper.

Looking ahead, C3L6 will continue annually, and we encourage Year 9 Chemists to consider joining in 2025 alongside our Year 12 students.

Mr James Boyce, Head of Science

FAREWELL

YEAR 13 by Mrs Julie Rumble, Head of Sixth Form Year 13 students enjoyed a fabulous Leavers Dinner prepared by the Luckley catering team. Parents joined for drinks, canapés and photos. It was a thoroughly inclusive evening and both students and staff had a great time.

The following day the students spent the morning swinging through the trees at Go Ape Bracknell, where they impressed staff with their skill, enthusiasm and agility. The weather wasn’t kind, but it was a fun morning!

SIXTH FORM ‘FUN’ ENRICHMENT

Year 12 students embraced the opportunity to explore Stratford upon Avon, with a walking tour called the ‘Sinister side of Stratford’, where Joe Rukin informed us of some of the myths and facts relating to Stratford’s history. They then travelled to Birmingham University for a campus tour before setting off for Alton Towers. After a good night’s sleep students spent the day riding roller coasters and generally being adrenaline junkies. A trip of culture, potential and extreme fun!

NEXT STEPS FOR LOWER SIXTH

As part of their Next Steps Day, Year 12 students engaged in a talk given by one of our alumni, Emily Aldridge, who discussed her route into her biotechnology degree and the importance of gaining relevant work experience. Mrs Rumble and Mr Crosley gave guidance in creating their UCAS applications Mrs Bizior then gave an informative talk and pointers on personal statement writing and the need for independent research. The day finished with a silver service masterclass led by Mrs Coogan-Beck and the catering team, before enjoying a slice of pizza and learning how to pull a pint to help with future part-time employment.

RAG WEEK

RAG week raised almost £1000 for Echo Heart Foundation. The activities, which were organised by Charity Prefect Tabby W and Lower School Prefect, Evelyn B, involved a cake sale, penny trail, ‘Rent a Sixth Former’, car wash and a staff versus students tug of war. Lots of fun was had by all!

POLITICS GUEST SPEAKERS

We we were delighted to welcome former The Rt Hon. Gillian Keegan MP, Secretary of State for Education to Luckley House, accompanied by Lucy Demery, Conservative candidate for Wokingham in the 2024 general election. Our guests joined Sixth Form Politics students for an interesting and lively political discussion to support their A Level studies. Gillian and Lucy also spent time speaking with staff about life at Luckley and the challenges facing independent schools. We have invited representatives from the other two main political parties to talk to students next term, as this is such a valuable experience to supplement their studies.

LUCKLEY HOUSE FRIENDS

“Parents working together for our children”

The summer term has been busy for LHF, with the highlights being the successful organization of the Summer Festival and our active support for the School’s sports day through a popular tuck shop.

Summer Festival: A Celebration of Community and Fun

The Summer Festival brought together pupils, parents, and teachers for an evening of fun and bonding. The festival featured games, performances, and stalls with delicious food and drinks.

Sports Day Tuck Shop: Fueling Athletes and Raising Funds

Sports day showcased our pupils’ athletic talents. LHF contributed by running a tuck shop, offering snacks and refreshments to keep participants and spectators energised. The tuck shop’s success was thanks to the enthusiastic support from parents and staff who donated their time.

A Heartfelt Thank You

We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to the Summer Festival and sports day tuck shop. Your support is making a significant impact. Stay tuned for more exciting events and opportunities next term.

All parents are very welcome to join our committee meetings and help as little or as much as they are able. It’s a great way to meet other parents and contribute to the School. Luckleyhousefriends@luckleyhouseschool.org

BOARDING NEWS

Long summer evenings and a change in the temperature has seen the boarders spending as much time outside as possible, taking full advantage of the beautiful Luckley grounds.

The BBQ has been extremely popular in the evenings, with some amazing food cooked and provided by our fabulous catering team; a great way for the boarders to relax after revising extremely hard for the end of year exams.

Activities this term have been exciting and well received by the boarders. They have included dragon boating on the Thames, a trip to the Disney 100 exhibition in London, crabbing at Mudeford Quay, a day on the Isle of Wight and go-karting in Reading, to name just a few!

The new table tennis table provided by Luckley House Friends has been a huge hit.
Mr Dave Rose Head of Boarding

OUTDOOR EDUCATION

THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH’S AWARD SCHEME

Mrs Laura Simmonds, Outdoor Education Coordinator

It has been a very successful year for our DofE Bronze and Silver teams who have headed out on their expeditions this year. Camping in the Bradfield area and in the New Forest respectively, they have coped well with rain, sun, mud, brambles, nettles, animals, and definitely the odd blister or two putting their navigation skills to the test. In addition they have worked hard on other sections, the Physical, Skill, and Volunteering and they can rightly be proud of the contributions made, which the DofE have calculated to have a social value of £4,941. Well done to you all!

COMBINED CADET FORCE

Over the Easter break the cadets spent a week at the Cadet Centre for Adventurous Training in Snowdonia taking part in adventurous training. The week saw the cadets pushed outside their comfort zones, taking part in high ropes, abseiling, gorge walking, raft building, and for the junior cadets, scaling Snowdon. The more senior cadets were split between Moel Siabod and Glyder, where they were put to the test navigating across the two more challenging peaks in low visibility and difficult weather conditions. Each cadet did themselves proud in, at times, incredibly challenging conditions, such as 30 mile an hour winds on the peaks. Unfortunatley none of us managed to summit our peaks due to dangerous weather, but there is always next year to try again.

Mr Adam Hartley (2Lt CCF Rifles)

YEAR 11 CELEBRATION DRINKS

Thursday 27 June was an evening of glamour and glitz, as Year 11 pupils and their parents gathered on the back lawn for celebration drinks before setting off for their Prom.

ALUMNI & DEVELOPMENT NEWS

Miss Sarah Francis, Development Manager

Miss Valerie Pornicott’s Memorial Ceremony

Luckley alumni and senior leaders gathered for a brief ceremony to remember former French teacher, Head of Languages, and Housemistress, Miss Valerie Pornicott. Donations raised from her funeral in January have funded a tree and a plaque in Miss Pornicott's name, together with a rose bowl to award outstanding achievement in A Level French. It was a joyous meeting of friends and colleagues to commend Miss Pornicott for her love and service to Luckley as well as a time to reflect on a life well lived. The sun was shining, the sky bright blue and guests were invited to tea and cake to complete an uplifting afternoon.

Alumni versus Pupil Netball Re-match

Current pupils once again took on an alumni team, as happened in March last year. This year it was Luckley that walked away with a clear win; a strong team of Year 10, 12 and 13 girls. Well done team Luckley! Alumni and current pupils enjoyed some friendly competition and were given the opportunity to strike up conversation over drinks and nibbles after the game. Luckley's alumni team was made up of a range of graduating year groups; the class of 2009 and 2011 through to more recent leavers from 2017, 2021 and 2022. Thanks goes to Mrs Kirstie Hobson for getting the current Luckley team in place, to Mrs Lisa Cox for umpiring and to all our participants for being such great sports. Spectators included puppies, children, parents, alumni and pupils; so there was a lot of action both on and off the court!

An Outstanding Citizen – Isobel Buck

It was two years ago that we waved goodbye at the Luckley gates to alumna, Isobel Buck, class of 2022. While at Luckley, Isobel was an exemplary Luckley citizen who greeted everyone with open arms and a beaming smile. Not much has changed. Now in her second year at University of Southampton studying BA Modern Languages and Linguistics, she has received the Residence Life Star Award. She is one of just six nationwide recipients to win the award, which honours the exceptional dedication to enhancing life in the university halls of residence – supporting and bringing the community together. Isobel, we could not be prouder or more delighted to see your beaming smile again.

Running for A Good Cause – Rachel Stevens

Alumna, Rachel Stevens from the class of 2018, emailed in to say she successfully completed London's 26-mile marathon in April. It was a challenge she has dreamt about achieving and a charitable run for Rachel, with the £4,000 she raised going to St Catherine's Hospice – providing the best possible care and quality of life to those with life limiting illnesses. As a Paramedic, this charitable cause is one she feels passionate about. Well done Rachel.

ALUMNI & DEVELOPMENT NEWS

Jade Savage: Reaching New Heights

At the beginning of July Jade was contacted by her former university, University of South Wales, with an offer to return to start a masters in Professional Practice. She applied for and has received full funding for her masters, which starts in September. Last year Jade achieved a 1st Class Honours for her Learning Disability Nursing degree; receiving an award of excellence for the highest achieving student within her cohort. She was also highly commended for her outstanding work during her work placements. Jade's continued studies will fit around her NHS position where she works as a Registered Learning Disability Nurse. Yet another alumna making her mark on the world and within the community. Well done to Jade.

Emma King Delivers on Speech Day

Friday, 5 July marked the last day of term. In keeping with tradition, Speech Day's guest speaker was an alumna, and this year we had the great pleasure to welcome back Dr Emma King. Her honest and profound talk to Luckley's Year 11 and Year 13 students and their parents was extremely well received. A top student and someone who has achieved so much in life, she explained that the glossy profile that summarises her life achievements is not the reality of her journey to where she is today; UK Space Station. Emma painted a realistic picture of her career journey and asked students to embrace failure, move forward with resilience and seize unplanned opportunities. To expect the unexpected is to keep life interesting. Photographed is Emma (left) with Headmistress Mrs Areti Bizior. Two extraordinary women who unite as Luckley past and present.

It is Life in The City for Kam Khan

Kamran Khan, Head Student from the class of 2023), aimed high when he applied for a degree apprenticeship at the prestigious, JP Morgan, his biggest achievement to-date. It was a gruelling and nerve-racking process, with a large candidate pool. He recalls group and one-to-one interviews and assessments, which he completed with determination and a winning attitude.

Miss Sarah Francis, Development Manager If you are a parent that attended Luckley we would love to hear from you. Likewise, if you have family members who were educated at Luckley, we want to know. Help us grow and

Now in his first year with JP Morgan, Kam remarks that his degree apprenticeship is providing a blend of academic learning and practical work experience – offering a fully paid Finance degree, a salary, and industry experience. And while it requires sacrifice (as he does not have the free time his university friends enjoy) his role as a Trading Assistant means he is working with highly skilled and knowledgeable employees who treat him like a colleague. At Luckley, Kam’s positive and ambitious character was admired by all; many looking up to him for advice and support. Kam continues to support Luckley pupils, providing advice and mentoring to those looking to move on to a financial degree apprenticeship.

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK

13 to 19 May was Mental Health Awareness Week and the theme this year was ‘Movement’. Mr Humphrey and the Sports Department organised some brilliant movement-focused activities throughout the week and staff were encouraged to incorporate movement within lessons. The aim is to reduce stigma, promote understanding and empower young people to prioritise their mental health.

One of the activities was ‘dodgeball’, which pupils played during their Form time.

LUCKLEY PEER PROGRAMME

Mrs Paula Bell, Director of Pupil Progress

A number of pupils have successfully completed the sevenweek PEERS Programme this term.

This is an evidence-based course to support young people who want to learn how to make and keep friends. The course is designed to promote well-being and good mental health, as friendships can buffer the impact of anxiety or stressful situations in life. The programme is fully accredited, and the course content is based on what really works for socially successful teens.

The feedback from both the participants and their parents has been very positive, and we certainly hope to run the course again during the next academic year.

READY STUDY GO!

Year 9 pupils took part in Ready Study Go! during 'Fun Week', where the focus was on developing note-making techniques ready for the start of Year 10. Pupils practised creating both written and digital Cornell Notes, incorporating abbreviations, images and key words to summarise a range of GCSE science topics. The winning examples were of a very high standard and the pupils were awarded with sweet treats.

Congratulations must go to all of the year group for their mature and focused approach to the activity. We hope that their newly acquired skills will stand them in good stead with their revision during the next academic year.

Mrs Paula Bell, Director of Pupil Progress

TEXTILES AND DESIGN TRIP TO LONDON

Year 10 Textiles and Year 12 Textiles and 3D Design students visited the New Designers Exhibition in Islington. This is a showcase of the final degree work of emerging design talent across a wide range of disciplines, including textiles, fashion, jewellery and ceramics. The students were fascinated by the wide range of techniques and skills on display, gaining valuable inspiration to use in their own ideas. They also enjoyed taking part in an embroidery workshop hosted by the Royal School of Needlework.

Mrs Maeve Mascarenhas, Teacher of Textiles

Congratulations to Jayden J in Year 10 for achieving a Silver medal in the recent Hamilton Maths Olympiad.

Only around 1800 pupils qualify each year and for Jayden to achieve Silver is absolutely fantastic – well done Jayden!

Mrs Dawson's form 7H were crowned champions and were each able to select a new book prize from the hugely popular Ultimate Football Heroes series.

LUCKLEY LIBRARY LOVES...

A Good Girl's Guide to Murder, by Holly Jackson

I have read the first and second books of this trilogy quite recently I had never read a proper murder mystery before, so this was a wonderful book to read. It follows Pip starting an investigation about a murder that happened in her town, Little Klinton, a few years ago. It is a thrilling rollercoaster of a book, that takes you through significant highs and lows, so just when you think you've figured it out a new secret emerges and throws you off course.

I loved this book and would recommend to those who aren't too easily shaken. 9/10
