ONLINE AUTHOR VISIT On Monday, Year 8 pupils were treated to an online author visit with Liz Kessler via the Henley Literary Festival. Liz gave a fascinating talk about her new book, ‘When The World Was Ours’. Set in Vienna, the book sensitively explores the friendship and the fate of three children from the mid 1930s and beyond. Leo and Elsa are Jewish and Max is the son of a high-ranking Nazi official and their lives take very different paths. Liz explained how she was inspired to write the book by her grandfather, and how he managed to escape the Nazis and find refuge in England. Liz spoke movingly about the research she conducted before writing the book including visits to a number of concentration camps. Hopefully our pupils will be inspired to read the book and learn a bit about a very important part of history.
NATIONAL POETRY DAY This year we are celebrating National Poetry Day by inviting students to participate in a range of national poetry writing competitions. These are being promoted around the school and in English lessons and we would love students to take part. There are different topics which students can write on, depending on which competition they enter, and we look forward to being able to share some examples of the work produced in the near future. Miss Darshan Bahbra, Head of English

Ade lives at the top of a London tower block and loves spending time with his friend Gaia, who lives in the opposite tower on the same floor. Their lives are set to change forever when some mysterious menacing plants, nicknamed Bluchers, start growing out of nowhere and the surrounding tower blocks to Ade’s begin falling… Will Ade and his Mum manage to escape? This is a gripping awardnominated story which also carries themes of bravery, loyalty and kindness. All in all an excellent science fiction novel recommended for Year 7 up. Debbie Godfrey, Librarian
