NEWS FROM LUCKLEY HOUSE SCHOOL

YOUTH SPEAKS On Monday night Luckley House had the pleasure of hosting the Rotary Club Youthspeaks debating competition. We entered two teams: Ella D, Tara T-K and Leo S-T as our senior team, debating whether PE should be compulsory; and Mia H, Jessica C and Brayden S as our intermediate team, debating whether boxing should be banned. Although we didn’t win on this occasion, both teams did the school proud. I was especially impressed with the volume of persuasive ideas our senior team was able to generate at relatively short notice. Thank you to everyone who took part and to all the parents who came along to support us. Special thanks is also due to Ilaria R who helped the teams pull together ideas prior to the competition. Holly Duxbury, English Teacher

CHILCOTT CONCERT

Last Sunday we had a fabulous day of choral singing here at Luckley. Our Chilcott Choir joined together with the Berkshire Maestros Young Voices to perform the ‘Jazz Songs of Innocence’ under the conductor and composer Bob Chilcott, as well as their own solo item. This was an amazing experience and collaboration for all our young singers as they worked together for the event. The Chamber Choir also gave a lovely solo appearance performing ‘Irish Blessing’ by Bob Chilcott and ‘Run’ by Coldplay. It was so good to hear choral singing in a live setting. Well done to all involved. Janice Ellwood, Director of Music

BERKSHIRE YOUNG SINGER OF THE YEAR Congratulations to Sarah-Jane B in Year 9 and Chloe G in Year 13 for winning a place in the semi-finals of the ‘Berkshire Young Singer of the Year’ competition. Sarah-Jane has been selected for the Classical and Pop/Musical Theatre categories and Chloe, the Folk category, in their different age groups. It was a very competitive first round and we are very excited for them both and wish them all the best in the final. Janice Ellwood, Director of Music

LUCKLEY LIBRARY LOVES... Raybearer by Jordan Ifueko It’s a long time since I’ve read a fantasy book that so imaginatively creates a world and so richly describes it. The empire of Aritsar is governed by the King plus one representative from each of the eleven surrounding regions. There is a special form of magic, the Ray, which bonds the Council together and enables it to rule effectively. Tarisai is a young girl seeking a place on the Crown Prince’s Council trained to rule at a future time when the current King reaches the end of his reign. Selection is a long and rigorous process that takes many years. During her time in the Capital she builds relationships with the other young Council hopefuls and gains the trust of the Crown Prince. However, Tarisai does not initially realise that she has been bewitched by her mother, a remote and mysterious character known as The Lady, to kill the Crown Prince. I thoroughly enjoyed journeying through this world with Tarisai as she learns, grows and has to face the unbearable predicament in which she finds herself. Recommended for Year 9 up.
