NEWS FROM LUCKLEY HOUSE SCHOOL
WIR GEHEN IN DIE SCHULE! (We’re off to school!)
Frau Hinz’s German class in Year 8 created fantastic Schultüten. The Germans create these wonderful cones of treats, pens, pencils, T-shirts and anything else their children would like for their very first day at school. This is an effort to encourage discussions between the new classmates as well as sharing a sweet tradition that has stood the test of time. Having just started the topic of school, Year 8 enjoyed creating their own Schultüten filled with German style sweets (Haribo!) and Lebkuchen (Christmas gingerbread). Decorated with new vocabulary learnt in this module, we had a fantastic time learning about die deutsche Kultur. Gut gemacht, Year 8! A special mention goes to Willow P for making the biggest Schultüte the world has ever seen!
DORSET AND DEVON MUSIC TOUR Sunday 3 July - Tuesday 5 July The Music department will be running a summer music three-day tour to the beautiful Dorset and Devon coastline, staying in Lulworth Cove and performing three short concerts in the surrounding area. The tour will also involve sight-seeing locally and trips to places of interest, including a ride on the old steam railway from Swanage to Corfe Castle. It will be a lovely end to a busy year for all our music students. Transport will be by coach leaving early on the Sunday morning and returning Tuesday evening. The cost for the trip will be £350 to include food, accommodation, travel and insurance (pocket money will be needed for a lunchtime snack). The concerts will be made up of a choral and instrumental programme and we would like to include as many students from our ensembles who are interested in taking part, to include woodwind and swing band repertoire, as well as the choir. If you are interested please let Mrs Ellwood know by email by Friday 3 December. Janice.ellwood@luckleyhouseschool.org
BLACK TIE DINNER AND KARAOKE FOR THE SIXTH FORM On Friday 19 November, Sixth Form students and staff enjoyed a formal black tie dinner in school. The highlights of the evening were the karaoke and the warm chocolate brownie pudding, a firm favourite of the Year 13 boys! Overall, this was a really lovely evening. There was some very enthusiastic singing, with a special mention to Greg K, who won ‘Best Performance’ with his rendition of Somewhere Only We Know. Oliver M won ‘Most Entertaining Performance’ with Never Gonna Give You Up and the ‘Best Group Performance’ accolade went to the Year 13 boys who performed Billie Jean. The Sixth Form students want to say a big thank you to all of the staff who made the event possible and particularly the catering team for such a delicious meal! Sam W, Head Student

LUCKLEY LIBRARY LOVES... Inkling by Kenneth Oppel Ethan’s life is quite challenging…his younger sister, Lucy, needs a lot of his time and help, his mother has passed away and his father is struggling to cope with raising two children alone. As an artist who is famous for creating graphic novels, Ethan’s father is completely stuck for inspiration and has not produced anything new for quite some time. Ethan himself is no artist, far from it, but because of his father’s fame, his friends have nominated him to create the artwork for a school comic project. Convinced that he is going to let everyone down, Ethan is amazed to discover, lurking in his home, a wonderful and mysterious creature that can help him! Formed from the pages of his father’s sketchbook, Inkling is Ethan’s salvation, in many ways… he becomes his friend, teacher and inspiration. I really enjoyed reading about the evolution of this unconventional relationship, it’s a very quick but gripping read! Recommended forYear 7 up. Darshan Bahbra, Head of English
