SCIENCE WEEK
LUCKLEY LIBRARY LOVES...
This week has been Luckley House Science week. As well as promoting careers in science, every lunch time has seen a different demonstration of some of the more unusual experiments we can do. To start the week we investigated various soft drinks to see which makes the best fountain when reacting with Mentos sweets. If you plan on doing this at home, we would suggest diet Cherry Coke! We have also been demonstrating static electricity using a Van der Graaf generator, creating balloon hovercrafts, looking at why corn kernels ‘pop’ and investigating the fuels used in F1 cars by making rockets. As you can see from the photos the pupils have thoroughly enjoyed leading the demonstrations.
The Boy at the Back of the Class – By Onjali Q Rauf This inspiring tale tells the story of Ahmet, a Syrian refugee who unexpectedly joins our narrator’s school classroom and who they decide needs their help.

This book won the 2019 Blue Peter Best Story Award and its author Onjali Q Rauf has done lots of aid work on behalf of refugee families. Her decision to not reveal the identity of the narrator until the end of the book places the emphasis on Ahmet and his story, and offers all readers from primary level upwards the opportunity to explore what being a refugee means and how it may feel to be in Ahmet’s shoes. A story about the power of kindness which feels never more relevant than in these modern times. Debbie Godfrey, Librarian
LUCKLEY SYNAGOGUE Year 7 pupils were fortunate enough to be visited by Rabbi Zvi Solomons on Monday. We set Drake Hall up as first a Synagogue, and then as a family dining room for Shabbat. We were able to try on some Jewish garments; see a Torah scroll; taste some Shabbat and Passover food; and learn many interesting things about Judaism.
