OLYMPIC ROWER INSPIRES PUPILS
DREAM WORK EXPERIENCE
On Thursday 16 September, we were lucky to be joined by Jack Beaumont, an Olympic silver medallist competing within the men’s quadruple scull event at the Tokyo Olympics, having previously competed in the Rio 2016 Games. Jack gave a great insight into his life as an Olympian. He told the story of his journey to the Olympics and how it felt stepping into the boat in 2016, after being called last minute to take an individual’s place and fly out to Rio just three days before the first event. Jack inspired many of our pupils; the talks started from 2pm with the Year 10 GCSE and Sixth Form students, who were amazed by the way he fought back from injury and made it to where he is now. “I enjoyed hearing about what it was like leading up to his race in the Olympics and the sort of things he does to maintain his fitness. Something that inspired me was when he spoke about the accident and injury that he sustained before heading to Rio.” Sophie Year 10 Following this, Jack spoke with the Year 9 Games class, where students enjoyed some time listening to his journey and ended the session with time on the rowing machines. The students were taught correct techniques and were extremely lucky to have small group sessions. We are so grateful for Jack coming to Luckley, not only inspiring the pupils, but the staff too. It was a great afternoon ending with a talk for parents and any students who missed out during the school day. We hope to welcome Jack back later in the year.
I am applying to study Veterinary Medicine at university to achieve my dream of becoming a veterinary surgeon. In order to apply, students are required to complete animalrelated and in-practice work experience. This forms a vital part of the application process as applicants are not even considered if this experience has not been obtained. Thanks to Mrs Hawkins, Luckley’s Alumni Coordinator, I was able to secure the most amazing work experience opportunity. I was lucky enough to spend a week with Lisa Hutchins, a former Luckley pupil, and her husband Nic on their sheep farm in Devon. Every day was different as Lisa worked so hard to organise new experiences for me. I fed alpacas, injected sheep, visited a water buffalo, spent time with pigs and got to know the horses. She also took me to a dairy farm where i helped with the milking process. However, something I will never forget is when I assisted with calving a cow. This was possibly one of the best moments of my entire life! Since spending time on the farm, I feel like I have grown in confidence. It has really aided me in writing my personal statement as I have so many interesting stories to tell! I am so grateful to Lisa and Nic as they were so helpful and welcoming. I had such a brilliant time and hope to return to help them with lambing in the future. Maddie W, Year 13
LUCKLEY LIBRARY LOVES..... The Skylarks’ War by Hilary McKay This is a heart-warming read about Clarry and her older brother Peter who are practically abandoned by their father, left to fend for themselves and live for the summer holidays in Cornwall with their grandparents. The story is set at the start of WW1 and follows Clarry and her brother at home and school as they grow up. We see the effects of war on those left at home but also follow their friends who sign up for the war effort. You sympathise with Clarry from the start and really feel connected to the other characters in the book. This is a great read for Year 7 up, including adults and is one that makes you think about the characters even after you have finished reading. Angie Chick, English Teacher
