NEWS FROM LUCKLEY HOUSE SCHOOL

LOWER SCHOOL UPDATE

Esther Brown, Head of Section (Lower School)

It was lovely to meet the Year 7 parents this week at the Welcome Evening. It was good to be able to put faces to the names and hear how well the children are settling in. All the pupils seem to be feeling both settled and confident and thoroughly enjoying their new environment. We will be voting in new Form Captains, Deputies and Lower School Prefects before half term and I am looking forward to reading the applications – details will follow in form time and assembly. I also hope to see lots of Year 7 & 8 pupils audition for this year’s Whole School Musical, ‘The Wizard of Oz’.

UPPER SCHOOL UPDATE Matt Humphrey, Head of Section (Upper School) It has been so pleasing to see the continued efforts of all the pupils in the upper school; they really are taking full advantage of all of the opportunities available to them and I am looking forward to seeing lots of them audition for the Whole School Musical of The Wizard of Oz. New roles of responsibility are becoming available to all pupils in Years 9, 10 and 11, so please encourage your son/daughter to apply. Job descriptions and how to apply will come out shortly and will be a great experience for them, including helping their year groups to have their views heard, as well as helping to plan trips!

HANNAH ON AIR! Hannah L S (10S) featured on BBC Radio Berkshire on Friday morning, talking to presenter, Andrew Peach about her recent shortlisted entry to the British Stamp Heroes of Lockdown Competition. Shortlisted from over half a million entries, Hannah has made it to the last 120. She spoke eloquently about her design, the materials she used and her reasons for choosing Sir Tom Moore as her hero. From the120 regional finalists, 24 winners will be announced in November. Eight designs will then be chosen as official Royal Mail stamps. Watch Hannah’s interview on our YouTube channel. Find out more about the competition

Year 11 students also had an excellent assembly introducing the VESPA system from Mrs Bell. This course helps GCSE pupils to equip themselves with the essential skills for GCSE study and is delivered via a month-by-month programme of activities, resources and strategies that will help pupils to develop mental resilience, better manage their workload, and ultimately release their potential-both in the classroom and beyond. VESPA stands for VISION, EFFORT, SYSTEMS, PRACTICE AND ATTITUDE and this week’s session focused on VISION, looking at the soft skills that are needed to thrive both in school and in the world of employment. More detailed information about the course will be shared by Mrs Bell in the near future.

DRAMA UPDATE

Esther Brown, Director of Drama

The Drama department has seen an incredibly busy start to the new term. With a trip last month to the National Theatre to see Lesley Sharp in ‘Paradise’, and the second trip booked to London for next week, we are loving the fact that live theatre is up and running again. The Junior Drama Club is preparing for their performance of ‘Treasure Island’ with Mrs Kempton and the Senior Drama Club has cast for ‘Pride and Prejudice (Sort Of)’. These clubs are a commitment club and students are expected to sign up each week for the relevant after-school slot. Full cast lists will be posted on the Drama notice board. The announcement for the Whole School Musical was also made this week. We are off to see the Wizard in ‘The Wizard of Oz’! There is huge excitement amongst the pupils and auditions start next week on Wednesday during the after-school slot – please sign up and collect an audition sheet if interested. The Drama department hosted a Drama Scholars’ lunch on Friday 1 October, for all drama scholars to come together to discuss plans for the department, the return of live theatre following the pandemic and to welcome the newest scholars to the school. We are very excited to also plan some special trips for this group.
