GCSE & A LEVEL MUSIC SHOWCASE

LUCKLEY LIBRARY LOVES...

On Tuesday night in The Whity Theatre, our Music GCSE and A Level students performed as part of their preparation for their course work.

It was a fabulous evening of live music, every performance highly polished with the repertoire ranging from concertos to musical theatre. It was great for all the students to have the opportunity to support each other and see the progression from Year 10 to 13 in front of a live audience. Well done everyone. CHILCOTT CHORAL On Sunday 29 November, Luckley Chilcott Choir and Chamber Choir will be performing at Luckley with the Berkshire Youth Choirs, in a joint concert directed by the composer and conductor Bob Chilcott. It will be a fantastic concert and we are all looking forward to it.

Former doctor, Adam Kay, is best known for his hilarious but revealing diary of when he was a junior doctor working for the NHS: This is Going to Hurt. He’s now set his sights on educating and amusing a younger audience with his guide to the human body. Starting with the skin and travelling through bones, the heart, muscles, brain, reproduction, digestion and death, Kay is skilled at keeping readers simultaneously fascinated and entertained with his interesting facts and gross humour.

Recommended for Year 7 up.

‘WHY LIBRARIES MATTER’ COMPETITION WINNERS In connection with National Libraries Week, Luckley House Library ran a competition asking students to write a compelling statement about how libraries make a difference.

The librarians were extremely impressed with the number, standard and variety of responses received and found selecting a winner a very difficult task!

Consequently, students’ excellent contributions will be used in designing a new upper wall display for the library.

First place was awarded to Jessica M (7H) who won a pile of books, whilst both Ava S-T (8H) and Brayden S (7H) won a book each for their highly commended submissions.

ST JOSEPH’S COLLEGE RUGBY CUP Match Report by Sam W Our Senior Boys’ Rugby Squad teamed up with Sherfield School to take on St Joseph’s College.

“A game destined for the history books of Luckley Sport, which was assembled at 8:45pm the evening before.

It began with Mr. Humphrey sending the famed email, ‘Rugby game tmrw, think we can get a team?’ After previously playing a game against the same opposition on Monday, the Senior Rugby squad had expressed their interest in another game. Mr. Humphrey’s can-do attitude meant that he immediately set to work.”

PENTATHLON TASTER The Modern Pentathlon is an Olympic sport with a rich history. At the most recent Olympics in Tokyo, Team GB took home the Gold in both the men's and women’s events. The sport combines the five disciplines of fencing, swimming, show jumping, shooting and running. If this is something which would be of interest to your children, please email Mr Standing or Mr Humphrey.

LUCKLEY/ODDBALLS HATS

Last week we enjoyed a fantastic talk from Pat at Oddballs about the company’s work with numerous charities to raise awareness of testicular cancer. To do our part, we have created bespoke Luckley House Oddballs hats! With 50 available, you can get yours by emailing Mr Humphrey. The £12 cost will be added to your school bill.

INTER GIRLS’ CROSS COUNTRY After finishing as runners up at the ESAA Cup county round at Downe House last month, our intermediate girls’ team made the six-hour round trip to King's College, Taunton for the regional round. This was the first time in Luckley history that a team had made it through this far.

Jess C was our first runner across the line in 6th place. During the previous round Mia H sprained her ankle and bravely ran through the pain to help the team qualify.

This time there were no mishaps and Mia finished 22nd. A massive thank you to Grace E who chose to run a cross country race in Somerset over playing for her football club. She finished 31st in a very competitive field. However, the girls wouldn't have been able to compete if Hannah D hadn't answered the call a couple of days before the competition to complete the team. She stayed with the pack and acquitted herself well in her first ever cross country race. Together the team finished 8th in the region (Berkshire, Wiltshire, Dorset, Somerset, Deven & Cornwall), only six points off 6th place.

This is very exciting for next year as all of our runners are in the younger year of a two-year age group.
