NEWS FROM LUCKLEY HOUSE SCHOOL
UPPER SCHOOL UPDATE It has been a successful return to academic life for the upper school. Our Year 11 pupils have been working tirelessly towards their mock examinations and I want to congratulate them on the manner in which they have approached them. Mrs Bell is delivering another VESPA assembly to Year 11s next week, looking at feedback and how they can best utilise it to ensure successful outcomes and benefit future learning. The Year 9 and 10 pupils have come back with a fantastic work ethic and are receiving lots of achievement points, which is testament to both of those year groups. This term, there will be a focus during year group assemblies on ‘Relationships’ for Year 9 – creating positive relationships with peers, teachers and preparing for life outside of the classroom. Year 10 pupils will have an introduction to VESPA with Mrs Bell and will be looking at transferable soft skills and developing these with a view to careers. I am looking forward to celebrating all the successes with the upper school this term and, as always, if there are any questions about your son or daughter, please get it touch. Matt Humphrey, Head of Section
SUPPORT FOR SOPHIA’S CHARITY HEAD SHAVE! Year 13 student Sophia Z is shaving her head for a fantastic cause! Dash is a local charity which supports victims of domestic violence. The charity helps people in Buckinghamshire and Berkshire, providing safe houses, emotional support, education and empowerment to help end domestic violence. Each week, two women are murdered by their partners in England and Wales. One in four women will experience domestic violence at some point in their lifetime. Sophia is asking for help to reach her fundraising target to support more women and children who are trapped with their perpetrators. Helping women and children has always been difficult, but as the COVID pandemic continues there are more than ever that need help. All donations big or small are hugely appreciated to help more women like this. Donate to Sophia’s cause at: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ good-girls-gone-bald
Poisoned by Jennifer Donnelly In this fantasy feminist retelling of the fairy tale Snow White, the main character, Princess Sophie, has her heart ripped out by a huntsman at the request of her stepmother, the Queen. Close to death she is rescued by seven little brothers and magically coaxed back to health. With a clockwork heart keeping her alive, she sets out on a journey to recover her true heart from the evil, mysterious stranger who took it from the huntsman. Along the way she learns about love, courage and loyalty. Told with true warmth, this was an uplifting tale about fighting for what you believe in when the odds are stacked against you. This book is recommended for Year 9 upwards. Rachel Maskelyne, Senior Librarian
