FILL A ROTARY SHOEBOX
ISA HOCKEY TOURNAMENT
The Rotary Shoebox Scheme helps less fortunate children in Eastern Europe by providing them with gifts that they would not have otherwise had access to. This year Luckley will be participating, with an aim to fill 50 shoeboxes. We would ask that every pupil brings 1-2 items from a list, which all form tutors will have access to, and is also available on the Rotary Club website. Drop off points are in every form room and the deadline is 1 December. We look forward to receiving your contributions! Virginia and Arissa, Sixth Form
This week the U14s took part in the ISA National Hockey tournament at the Lee Valley Tennis and Hockey Centre, London. Both teams played really well and enjoyed taking part in the tournament. Luckley 1 finished in 4th place in the Bowl. Luckley 2 finished in 3rd place in the Trophy. One aspect of the day that all the girls really enjoyed was the opportunity to play at the Olympic Park where team GB have played.
Endurance: Shackleton’s Incredible Voyage, is a 1959 book written by Alfred Lansing. I was lent this book a couple of years ago by a parent of one of my students and, although I smiled politely, I was less than enthusiastic. I don’t usually read non-fiction and you have to read and appreciate a book given to you by a parent. I grudgingly began to read this and can only describe what followed as a reading frenzy. Within pages, I was swept away to the Antarctic. This text ticks all the boxes: Lansing makes the account read like crafted fiction with the power of a real adventure story. Shackleton was a real person and some of the things that he went through will stay with you forever. The book redefined what being ‘freezing’ means to me. I read it walking down the street, I read it on the train, I read it on an exercise bike. I then bought several other copies and sent them to my family. This one has stayed with me and I thoroughly recommend it to anyone. Holly Duxbury, English Teacher
LUCKLEY LECTURES - MARTIN TYE INSPIRES “The only thing stopping you is you”, were no truer words spoken by our inaugural Luckley Lecture speaker, Martin Tye. Martin delivered a strongman style circuit for our sports scholars and then spoke about his story from soldier to strongman, what it was like lifting 550kg and how he manages to eat 10,000 calories a day! Thank you to all those that attended - keep an eye out for our next talk!
