She pressed her feet under the linen. She shuddered, and her cold, almost stiff hands wrapped her feet under her long linen drapes.

It was of no use.

She could still feel the stone's presence, the icy chill that passed from the tips of her feet to every strand of her hair.

Her eyes were red and swollen from crying all night, and she looked behind her at the iron railing where the lock was still hanging. She would not try to break down the banisters as she had done before, nor would she sit on the stony ground and roar, and curse, and destroy.

Her blue eyes, once clear as the sea, were now bloodshot. At night, the sea always escaped from her eyes uncontrollably. Now that the sea had dried up, there was only silt in her pupils.

Wherever I go, the noise chases me

Sometimes it’s the noise from high rise buildings Sometimes it’s the noise from the site

Sometimes it’s the noise from the busy traffic Sometimes it the noise from children playing in the park

Sometimes it’s the noise from dogs that were barking Sometimes it’s the noise from people arguing

Sometimes it’s the noise from my inner voice Sometimes it’s the noise of dreams at night

Wherever I go, I’m defeated by noise.

Blazing buildings burning bright, Crackling floor boards through the night.

Engines screaming, sirens blaring, Fire fighters all come haring.

Water wooshing, steam rising, Blue lights flashing, flames subsiding.

Ash and rubble, creaking timbers, Good thing we didn’t lose any fingers.

The waves are racing Towards the shore Booming, crashing...more, more, more! The sand is crunching beneath my feet Boom, crash, crunch, crunch, I march to the beat. Sandcastles whistling and blowing, Umbrellas opening and shutting, Rain pitter-pattering.

Bang goes the sound of an exhaust pipe back firing, Beep goes the sound of angry drivers pressing their horns. Vroom goes the sound of cars zooming down the motorway. “Aaargh!” goes the sound of frustrated people shouting at one another. Pitter-patter goes the sound of rain on the windscreens. Crash goes the sound of cars smashing into each other. Nee naw goes the sound of the police car sirens.

The sky was cold and grey. The clouds covered every ounce of the sky so that not even a sliver of blue was left above me. There were mountains in the distance that bumped and curved along the horizon. The trees rimmed my view; their green leaves dancing in the wind. The dull grey asphalt road was interrupted by a large crack in the ground. The crack spread wide and its edges were jagged and rough. A petrol station that had once stood on the road now torn in two, the roof was deformed and metal poles were exposed like the bones in a graveyard. A car was left abandoned at the edge of the crack, on the verge of rolling into the unknown dark depths that lay before it. Smoke rose up in the distance from another building that had been split apart by the crack. The grey plumes contrasted with the fields looming behind. The crack itself stretched far into the distance, as far as the eye could see. It was like a dark snake curving off into the horizon. There were no people in the vicinity of the crack and the only sounds that could be heard were the chirping of the birds and the occasional stone falling into the darkness. The fields away from the crack lay undisturbed and unchanged, like a calm lake before a waterfall.

He drove as fast as he could, his sweaty palms clenched on for dear life at the wheel. He swerved to and fro across the deserted byway, where not even tumbleweed was to be seen. He hadn’t heard nice things about this road (people always said it was very dangerous) but at that moment, it was his only way of getting home. The road was covered in sandy stones and barren sticks, like it was a miniature desert…He could almost taste the flurry of dust being spewed by the tyres of his car. The vehicle had long ago exceeded the speed limit, as he raced down the crumbling path, but then…something came into his sight. Something that caused him to stop suddenly…

He got out of the car and rubbed his eyes. He rubbed them again. He could not believe what he was seeing: a gigantic crevasse, submerged into the ground in the middle of nowhere! It was festering into the earth like a fracture in a porcelain vase. He wasn’t sure, but he felt that he was definitely lucky not to have died. He peered down into the Mariana trench like void, where he found a never ending abyss of dust, grime and rubble around the pitch-black chasm, like strokes of black paint.

He suddenly collapsed to the ground…which was shaking. The void was increasing its size by the second, absorbing everything in sight, and it was coming for him! Startled, he rushed back to the car…to find it smashed into pieces battered into debris. The grumbling ground was far too much force for the car. He only had one choice…run!

The man slowly stepped out of the car, his shoes scraping the gravel on the ground and slams the car door with a bang. As he slowly strolled over to the crack, he noticed a car that had been crushed by the canopy of the petrol station. The engine smoked like a campfire filled with pine needles. There was a person slumped over the wheel as the car alarm screamed out into the silence, stabbing at the man’s ears. As the man got closer to the edge, he crouched down and leant over, seeing blackness extending down forever into the void.

8

He picked up a rock and threw it down the crack. The deafening silence reigned over the area as the rock fell. After a few seconds the sound of the rock hitting something clanged out like a gong being struck. The man got up and spun around as the ground beneath him began to crumble and shake as if a herd of elephants were stampeding past. The man scrambled backwards and the piece of concrete that he had been standing on peeled away and fell into the abyss, disappearing in seconds.

He walked back towards the petrol station as the crashing sounds of the slab smashing into the ground raced to his ears. As he looked around, he noticed a telephone pole leaning crookedly like an old tree in a storm, creaking and cracking as it was held up by the wires connecting it to the rest of the poles. He looked up to see a crow balancing on top of the pole. The crow cawed down to the man as if warning him, then the crow flapped its wings and threw itself into the sky.

As the man walked away from the pole, he noticed the pulsing light of the emergency services on the horizon, too far away to hear but close enough to see. Knowing that help is on the way, the man walks back to his car, and pulled open the door. As he climbed in the car, the alarm suddenly stopped, giving up against the overwhelming silence.

A strong tremor shook the surroundings. Suddenly, the nearby tarmac track was ripped apart and a deafening rumble caused the whole land to tremble violently like an army of tanks hurtling towards the enemy. The huge crack in the concrete started to split further until a colossal gorge separated the green patches of dry grass.

Petrol stations collapsed, obliterating every vehicle that stood beneath their awnings. Electricity pylons toppled, one by one, onto the roads, smashing cars and littering the edge of the fault line with broken glass. Eventually, everything fell silent. Bits of rubble finally stopped breaking off of the wounded ground and truck horns finished beeping.

Within minutes, what was a colourful array of untouched green fields had become a scene of damage and destruction. Farmhouses had been torn apart and small forests were destroyed. The countryside lay still again, being scorched by the blazing sun, but the jagged division of the road still scarred the landscape.

As the day progressed, the lamp posts still lay flat on the surface of the street and abandoned sedans remained crushed by the collapsed buildings. No one returned to gather up the debris of the destruction. No one remained.

Why does it happen? What is the point of war?

It just kills people, Nothing more.

War is a monster, That never dies, An angry monster, That wrecks people’s lives.

With so many lives wasted What good can be done? It’s not a jolly game of football, No one has won!

Bang after bang, Death after Death, No goals are scored, So what we have left?

Nothing but blood, Nothing but tears, Nothing but names on stones, That haunt the years.

I am the killer of many I am a sea of blood

I am battlefields and trenches, I am hell from above.

I lift leaders up, I kill the spirits of the common, I am in 15 places at once

I make the economy hit rock bottom.

I end the lives of soldiers, I make their loved ones cry.

I speak in secret languages, While people ask me WHY?

10

I'm standing here alone, surrounded by people, kids humans, skin and bone but alas we’re all here to die I am standing here in silence it's so loud but so quiet I am showing my defiance frozen here in total silence

I was too late; I was too slow I watched the enemy come over the hill I wanted to act but I didn’t have the will stood there frozen, silent, still, I wonder what drives our urge to kill?

As I recall those dark days so long past I vividly remember their pained expressions as they breathed their last All around us were trenches blacked Fires burning, our provisions lacked Inch by inch we covered ground Deathly silent as not to make a sound Smuggled ourselves past occupied land I saw the horror of war first-hand Behind enemy lines, I led our attack Straight from the woods and into their unsuspecting back We robbed them of their arms and ammo, then annexed their camp And took shelter in bunkers which were cold and damp Those men died in absolute despair That day there was no victory there.

Find me a planet where wildfires don’t burn,

Where the indigenous people help us to learn How to treat the animals and look after the land, And cruelty to all living things is completely banned.

Find me a planet where the icebergs don’t melt away, The whales swim freely and the polar bears can play. We begin to understand our actions are making the Earth transform, And we all work together to stop our world warm.

Find me a planet where the rainforests grow, Birds fly high and the jaguars prowl below. Stop greedy mankind from destroying all the trees, Reduce, reuse, recycle, listen to our pleas!

Find me a planet with clean, clean air,

In a place where children can live without a care. We can find alternative energy sources to help us thrive, Making a few changes to the way we heat, cook and drive.

The planet I long for is my Earth, my home, my world. Join me on this journey to get our voices heard.

There will be a time in the world when there is no life you can see,

No games to play, no laughs to be had, no fun for you and me. This tragic day will come so soon I wrote this poem why, To remind everyone to protect our world so it doesn’t curl up and die.

God gave us this world to care for and keep, But that idea is sadly and slowly falling to sleep.

The lush, colourful, tall trees, The buzzing, striped, friendly bees.

Our world is like a paradise, but we need to protect it, We need to save our environment and everyone needs to commit.

There’s still hope, but we haven’t got much time, After all, our planet is on the line.

There’s much more to say, but my point is shown, The planet is everything and everyone’s home.

I love this planet and I’m sure you do too, That’s why it’s relying on me and you...

Books are the doorway To a fantasy world. Books can be funny Or sad as they uncurl.

Books have twists Along the way, Books have dragons And witches and magic and fay.

Castles and princes in shining armour, Girls in towers and wizards in capture.

Chugging along, Like a choo choo train, Swaying and playing As it goes on its way.

It rumbles and tumbles And you feel a jolt And then, quite suddenly, It comes to a halt.

The world of the book Fades away. And you’re left all alone, Back to your day.

But the wonderful thing is, It’s encased That magical world In that book case.
