In Memory of Our Fallen Classmates

Larry Eberle 1956-2019

There are special people in our lives that seem to shine above the rest That was Larry Eberle, he simply was the best. He had a witty sense of humor, every conversation made you smile He wasn’t trying to be so funny, that was just his style. He enjoyed a modest lifestyle, but he had a wealthy soul It was all about his family and friends, and a fishing pole. He was creative and artistic, sang songs and played guitar Not really known to all the world, but he was our rock star. We’ll treasure clever words, a laugh, a picture and a song, Memories for us to hold and have it for lifelong. It hurts that he’s not with us, our hearts are sad we say Let’s raise our cans of cold Busch Light and celebrate his way! At peace with his life’s journey, now up to heaven above

Larry we will miss you lots, the guy that we all love!
Larry Eberle

In Memory of Our Fallen Classmates

Larry

Shipley

1956-2018

Entrepreneur and Agribusiness executive, Larry Shipley, 62, died suddenly at his South Dakota home on November 4th, 2018. Shipley was the President of IBP Enterprises (1997-2001) and Chief Financial Officer, IBP Inc. (1994-2001). Headquartered in facilities that Shipley designed and constructed in Dakota Dunes, South Dakota, IBP was a $17 billion Fortune 120 company known worldwide as the premier producer of fresh beef and pork.

Shipley was born Fred L. Shipley, Jr., in 1956 in St. Louis, the third of four sons to Fred Larimore and Virginia Lee (Daly) Shipley. He grew up in suburban St. Louis where he attended Our Lady of the Pillar elementary school and graduated from De Smet Jesuit High School in 1974. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering with an electrical engineering minor from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, in 1977 and graduated with a Master of Science in Marketing (MBA) from Purdue’s Krannert Graduate School in 1982.

Shipley worked as a Manufacturing Process Engineer with Mid-America Dairymen (1978-1980) in Springfield, Missouri, and Director of Dairy Consulting Services (1982-1989), providing a broad range of consulting services to boutique firms and Fortune 500 corporations. He was recruited to join IBP in 1989 as Assistant to the President, working alongside IBP’s CEO in the day-to-day management of the company. Shipley later served as Assistant to the Chairman (1990-1994) and was promoted in 1994 to Executive Vice President Corporate Development and then Senior Vice President Corporate Development. His contributions included establishing an award-winning corporate web site and the $670 million acquisition of Foodbrands America. In 1997, Shipley became IBP Chief Financial Officer and President IBP Enterprises. Under his leadership, he integrated eight acquired companies into the corporate portfolio, established the company’s first e-commerce presence, and developed foreign operational and investment joint ventures in Korea, China and Russia. He was instrumental in leading the three billion dollar purchase of IBP by Tyson Foods in 2001.

In 2003, Shipley founded his own management consulting practice offering advisory services to client companies in the food, agribusiness, manufacturing, service and renewable energy industries. As a consultant, he was beloved by his clients for his expertise in finance that led to bottom line increases. Loyalty was his trademark and he was known for always putting his clients’ needs first.

A meticulous craftsman, Shipley was working on a gut renovation of his historic home. He was a fan of classic cars, musical groups, especially The Eagles, and enjoyed assembling music lists for various social occasions.

Shipley was preceded in death by his mother in 1977, his father in 2003, and his beloved German Shepherd, Maggie, in 2016. He is survived by his three brothers, Patrick (Dianne Barnes) Shipley of Aurora, Colorado; Michael (Kathleen Neuenschwander) Shipley of Kirkwood, Missouri; and Stephen Shipley of West Plains, Missouri; two nephews Christopher (Kathryn Gauvin) Shipley, his God Son, of Fairfax, Virginia and Brian (Laura Miller) Shipley of Castro Valley, California; and four great nieces, Eleni and Daphne Shipley of Fairfax, Virginia, and Savannah and Violet Shipley of Castro Valley, California; as well as cousins in both Missouri and Tennessee and many other dear friends, neighbors, and colleagues.

Favorite De Smet Memories: I enjoyed playing on the freshman and sophomore football teams, though I didn’t contribute much on game day. Other memories include: on my first day at De Smet, Mr. Travers pacing back and forth in math class authoritatively emphasizing “precision and accuracy” multiple times, Mr. Grawer’s encouraging the use of multimedia in student presentations – way ahead of his time, Father Apel’s warning us “hot glass looks just like cold glass” – which I didn’t always remember, beating SLUH in football, and winning the state basketball championship. Senior year, fun was had by all of us who joined Bob Frein at his parents’ A-frame house in the woods for a weekend filled with laughter, Budweiser, and various antics. I greatly appreciate the terrific teachers and classmates, and positive learning environment I experienced at De Smet from 1970 to 1974.

Favorite Teacher: Mr. Grawer, Father Apel, and Mr. Bick were all very motivating and engaging. Mrs. Smith, in honing my writing ability, helped me the most of any teacher I ever had.

Locker Mate: John Buncher, I think.

College Degree(s): BS, Creighton University; MD, University of Missouri-Columbia

Life After Graduation: Following my anesthesiology residency and cardiac anesthesia fellowship at Washington University, I worked as a cardiac anesthesiologist at Missouri Baptist in St. Louis for 37 years. After marrying, I was blessed with a very caring, devoted wife and two children that I could not be more proud of. My enjoyments have been water skiing/boating on the Mississippi River, swimming, doing lots of yard work (though you wouldn’t know it if you looked at my lawn), and volunteering for Kirkwood Parks.

Noteworthy and/or Interesting Accomplishments: Being a part of and contributing to my loving, close family and providing the best care I could for my patients on a superb heart surgery team.

John T. Buncher

• Sitting courtside (2nd from the end of the bench) for every game of the 1973 State Basketball Championship season.

• Making the Varsity Soccer team Senior year and rotating in at mid-field with O’Donnell and Rauschenbach. Making it to State Quarterfinals.

• Watching the wrestlers endlessly running stairs at the back of the gym during basketball practice.

• Senior Year riding to school every day with Coach Vitello. Had to be the quietest car ride in the history of automobiles.

• Figuring out with John Dulle how little gas in the tank it would take to make it through a double date and still make it home.

Favorite Teacher: Rich Weiman, Chris Mess

Locker Mate: Honestly don’t remember.... embarrassing! (K. Bucol or J. Buchholz?)

Marital Status: Married 45 yrs.

Spouse’s Name: Colleen (Fogarty) Buncher

College Degree(s): BS Mechanical Engineering, University of Missouri - Rolla

Life After Graduation: Married Colleen “Fogarty” Buncher after graduating from UMR. Moved to St. Paul, MN to work at 3M thinking we would eventually move back to St. Louis. 45 years later we are still in the Twin Cities area. Worked at 3M for 38+ years in a variety of positions and locations before retiring in 2017. Blessed to have our children and their families in the area and able to spend much of the winter in a warmer climate. We take multiple trips each year to St. Louis to visit family.

Noteworthy and/or Interesting Accomplishments:

• Several 3M Corporate and Divisional Awards including Chairman’s Environmental Leadership Award. Managed manufacture of Scotch Tape and Blue Painters Tape in Hutchinson, MN.

• Parish Council Chair/Knights of Columbus – St. Anastasia Parish, Hutchinson, MN.

• Finally getting around to learning how to play guitar.

How Would You Like to be Remembered? Successful career. Loving and dedicated husband, father, and grandfather. Positive influence on others.

Personal Note: My sincerest thanks to all of those who are orchestrating this effort. I have lost touch with many wonderful friends, teammates, and classmates over the years but I am very much looking forward to reconnecting with as many as I can during our 50 yr reunion. If any of you are ever in this area, please feel free to reach out to me. I would love to hear from you!

Dan Callahan

DEJCallahan@aol.com

Favorite De Smet Memories: Lost Buddies (Mike Graf, Don Aubuchon, Jim Marheineke); Track and Cross-Country, Fr. Football and Fr. Wrestling, Drama, Narrator, “Secret Life of Walter Mitty”, Fortran Programming (we sent coding sheets that were typed by another school into punch cards, we got our errors and results back a WEEK later. Saw our text book in a Computer Museum in Boston years later). Music Theory class as an elective. Columbia MO parties after De Smet won State Championship in Basketball. Working at Burger Chef (featured in an episode of Mad Men) when a group of St. Joe girls came in and ordered “Dan Callahan with nothing on him”.

Favorite Teachers: O’Hagan, English “Garbage, Gentlemen, Garbage!” (as he handed back our graded essays); Boehm, Earth Science and Biology (Student Out-West Camping Trip 1972 with G. McMahon, SJ), animal skull collection in Biology Lab, feeding pet tarantulas and big pet bass fish in Biology Lab); Buckley History (soothing voice, great for sleeping); Burgman Mechanical Drawing (glad its now all digital); Fr. Kosterer, German (learned more about Mozart and Beethoven than I ever wanted to know - all in German), JJ Muller, Comparative Religion, Cerneka, Physiology.

Marital Status: Married 39 years

Spouse’s (or Significant Other) name: Franci Vittrup Callahan

Children: Christy married 10 years, just delivered my first grandchild, Luke (currently 14 months old)

College Degree(s): B.A., Biology, University of Missouri - Columbia (1977), Ph.D., Chemistry, University of California - Santa Barbara (1986)

Life After Graduation: Worked and lived at a Veterinarian Hospital during college - got hooked on fancy lab equipment. After college, worked as a Research Technician at Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology, Nuclear Medicine Research Lab, Washington University - St. Louis - got hooked on chemistry, radiolabeling and Positron Emission Tomography (PET) imaging. After Ph.D. in Chemistry, did post-doctoral work at Johns Hopkins (Bloomberg School of Public Health) - got hooked on Biophysics and fluorescence microscope digital imaging. Joined Research Medicine and Radiation Biophysics Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) as Staff Scientist (1991). After 17 years at LBNL, my brother Larry (also a De Smet graduate) helped me license (from LBNL) some technology (Visual-Serving Optical Microscopy, VSOM) I developed at LBNL. I took early retirement in 2008 and founded my own company called Live Cell Assays, LLC. I developed an international set of VSOM patients with the help of some friends (from the ‘hood - Tom Cortopassi and Tom Thornton, De Smet 74 - and from De Smet - Jim Didion ‘72) and family (my brother Kevin, also a De Smet graduate). The LCA LLC members from the ‘hood all lived near each other in Carrollton subdivision in Bridgeton - St. Lawrence the Martyr parish. All this is gone now due to St. Louis airport expansion. The ‘hood is now under the end of the newest St. Louis airport runway. Something else that is gone forever is the US Patent System. By 2013, no one in their right mind would form a small patent-based biotechnology start-up company. Tony Sudekum (De Smet 74, deceased) pointed this out to me when I asked him to invest in 2013. After additional, new anti-patent legislation and a Supreme Court ruling that patents should not be considered property, I have to admit that Tony was correct.

Noteworthy and/or Interesting Accomplishments: My company has survived and outlived the VSOM patents (which of course belonging to my previous employer, LBNL). The patents are now expired and I am free to practice my invention. We will be launching new software in the Cloud this year, and we will be making the VSOM microscope available in the Cloud (via remote login).

How Would You Like to be Remembered? Junior Year: missed Paul Heck’s (DeSmet ‘73) record in the mile by 0.2 s! Senior Year: Qualified for the State Track Meet in three events. Won nothing! Founded a patent-based biotechnology company at exactly the wrong time in US History (remember the Stock Market and Housing Market crash of late 2008, anyone?

Dan with first grandchild, Luke (11 mos). Spring 2024

Favorite De Smet Memories:

Gary Clark

• Bill Christman’s Art Class. Spinning Bob Dylan albums while paging thru an ART book filled with erotic activities. Life changing for this young spartan.

• Pre-game meals in Betty Comb’s kitchen and realizing your Mom is a lousy cook.

• Visiting a Berkley Manor mansion and discovering that the rich have Coke fountains in their game rooms. Refreshing!

• Peering out over the faculty parking lot and seeing your coach sleeping in his VW beetle after a long night at the Village Bar.

• First visit to the Goessling home, I walked downstairs to discover a fully stocked bar and a happy hour that started early every weekend. Meeting Mrs. Goessling, she inquired what my Dad did and I replied....hair dresser. Unfortunately, they met at De Smet the next weekend and Dad was not amused. Bob was bald and owned a body shop.

• Saturday morning 6:00am basketball practices that lasted 3 hours and water was forbidden. Coach Grawer was brilliant, but clueless when it came to hydration and fashion.

• Watching Mr. Kelly walk briskly into a packed cafeteria with all heads turning, stop and stand right in front of me while I was enjoying a cheeseburger. I greeted him warmly and he promptly invites me to a standing room only Inquisition in Father Houlihans office. It did not go well.

• Without a car or a ride home, I frequently meandered my way down Ballas to the Hwy 40 entrance ramp. Displaying my book bag prominently, I then thumbed my way home to south St. Louis. Always writing the license plate number on my wrist in case I was found murdered.

• After we won a really important basketball game in Columbia, my parents agreed with me that it was a great idea for me to travel with Shortal by Greyhound to New Orleans for spring break, staying with Paul’s brother at Loyola in the dorm. Unbeknownst to us, his brother ran a very successful drug store out of his dorm room, with knocks on the door 24/7. Broke, we then cashed in our return bus tickets and hitchhiked home. I could go on, but won’t....parents got their money’s worth!

Spouse’s (or Significant Other) name: Debbie Corkhill Cortopassi

Children: None College Degree(s): University of Missouri, Columbia, BS Horticulture

Life After Graduation: Member of Phi Kappa Theta Fraternity. Graduated from University of MO, Columbia in 1979 and was then employed at Monsanto for 6 years. I was a Reasearch Biologist in the Microbial Pesticide Group growing and testing microbes for use against agronomic pests. I became very knowledgeable in the art of fermentation and cell culture using fermenters and bioreactors. I left Monsanto in 1985 to join B. Braun Biotech, a German company, as a Fermentation Sales Specialist, placing fermenters and bioreactors at biotech and biopharmaceutical companies througout the country. I worked from my office in my home for 32 years and traveled extensively. I traveled to Germany quite often over the 32 years. B. Braun became Sartorious in 2000 where I held various management positions. I retired in 2017 as Director of Fermentation Technology North America. Many of the fermenters and bioreactors used in North America for biopharmaceutical vaccine research, product development, and manufacturing have my fingerprints on them.

Noteworthy and/or Interesting Accomplishments: In 1979 after graduating college I spent 3 months with my childhood friend and De Smet class of 74, Don Aubuchon, traveling Europe. Great memories with Don. Rest in peace Don. My wife Debbie and I have visited and hiked almost all of the National Parks. I have visited all the states except Alaska. We have traveled extensively throughout Europe. I met my wife Debbie at a friend’s wedding. It was meant to be, as she recognized me from a group photo shown to her the previous year by the bride. Some things just happen for a reason. I have 3 Bridgeton grade school friends that are my best friends of 63 years, still to this day. De Smet alums, Dan Callahan (Cal), Tom Thornton (Thunder) and Kevin McGinnis (Mac), St. Thomas Aquinas. I fish, golf, bike, and learned to play guitar at the age of 45. Not very good, but got to play several times in the Duck Room at Blueberry Hill. I had a friends yearly golf tournament for 35 years called The Corto. I ride in the Pedal the Cause every year to benefit Cancer research, in memory of friends and family who have been lost to cancer and many who have beat it.

How Would You Like to be Remembered? One who tried to live my life to its fullest, who took care of his family and extended family and was a loyal friend to many. Empathy for others less fortunate. I try to live life by the motto “Men For Others”.

1979.

City); Ted, 36, (wife is Bridget [St. Peter], kids: Jean and Maeve, lives in Madison, WI; Alex, 34, (GF: Moira Duffy), no kids, was in NYC now back in STL; Andrew, 31, (wife is Abby [Landes], kid: Magnolia, lives in Richmond Heights; Anthony dcsd 1995; Elizabeth, 29, (husband is Josh Owens) no kids, just moved to STL from Madison and was formerly in both Swanee and Denver; Frances, 24, lives in Denver; Maggie, 18, just graduated Viz, lives in Tampa, going to University of Tampa.

College Degree(s): BS Journalism, University of Kansas (Patty graduated with a BS in Education from Boston College. Our kids attended: Duke, Harvard, London School of Economics, Santa Clara, Wash U, Univ. of WI, Fordham, SLU, Univ. of Denver, Univ. of CO-Boulder, Univ. of Tampa. Semesters abroad included Oxford, England, Alicante, Spain, Santiago, Chile; Buenos Aires, Argentina, Madrid, Spain, and a bicycle trip across the USA.

Life After Graduation: Right out of school I worked as a real estate investor; CMO for a bank holding company engaged in commercial banking, retail, trust, brokerage, investment banking and correspondent banking. Worked as a Creative Director at Maritz; worked past 22 years at Merrill Lynch as a wealth advisor to individuals, companies and large non-profits. I’ve also been very busy, composing music for about 60 years.

Noteworthy and/or Interesting Accomplishments: I was able to persuade a pro-abortion associate to save at least one child; he promised me he would intervene to save a child. That truly is something to be proud of; somebody’s going to live and make the world better because of it. I wrote a happy birthday composition for Yo Yo Ma and had it played for him at his birthday party in New York City. He loved it! When he said that, I felt like I had just been handed a million dollars. I have two albums out on Amazon.com and Spotify and I’m working on releasing “Symphony for Angels” next fall. I calculated my personal contribution to US GDP as approximately $245.8 million based on income earned, taxes paid, money spent raising, feeding, clothing, transporting and educating 8 kids, and everything they’ve bought because they came into the world and had kids of their own, and from money made for clients as an asset manager. I was glad that one client gave away 100% of the $10 million in gains I made for him. That’s what I call teamwork with God. Responsible acceptance and good use of gifts and wild generosity with the fruits of purposeful work are an incredible combination.

How Would You Like to be Remembered? As the luckiest man in the world and a happy composer of many very nice compositions I hope will be pleasing for a long time to come, for as many people as possible. And as a great adventurer and sailing and boat captain. I want to be remembered by my good example; nothing to say, only actions to emulate in some way. Everything else is really not important. I want the people I love and care for to feel better for having had me influence their lives, and yet not really be able to say exactly how, because I helped them become their better selves in their own way. And I want to be remembered for asking you to help save a child by making a sincere request of the one who would otherwise kill the child or push for it, or worse, do nothing about it; it’s not so hard to ask. My regret is I haven’t figured out how to effectively respond to betrayal; polite avoidance of conflict isn’t really worth the consequences it brings. But good cheer, solid integrity and kindness and nice music are golden. I wish you my classmate by happenstance, the very best!

Favorite De Smet Memories: I was fortunate to have attended De Smet. I remember the spirit of the school and our classmates creating an atmosphere of inspired healthy competition and episodes of outrageous hilarity in the classroom. There were so many fine admirable Jesuits, as well as lay teachers, who profoundly impacted our lives. My favorites were Fr. Hoyer and Mr. Koenig. It was a brief moment when we were instructed by those whom we knew had only our best interests at heart...a unique time in life for sure.

My Family=My Life:

My wife Pam (married 34 years), Daughter Elena (32), Son Tommy (30)

Academic: Loyola University New Orleans. St. Louis University Medical School. Internship at St. John’s Mercy Medical Center. Anesthesiology residency and Cardiac fellowship at Bethesda Naval Hospital/National Institutes of Health.

After Graduation: I left the Navy (Lieutenant Commander) in 1990 and started private practice in Rochester, NY. I moved back to the Washington, DC area nine years later and returned to the NIH for seven years. Finally, I re-entered private practice in Frederick, Maryland for my final fifteen years, retiring after 37 years in the operating room.

Of Note: My career has been patient care, yet over the years I have held a few administrative positions. Chief of Anesthesia in the Navy, President of my small group in New York, board of directors and Vice President of my 100 Physician group in Maryland. Nowadays, in addition to my attempts at art (pastels and oils), learning tennis in hope of someday keeping up with my wife who is an excellent player, I am also taking lessons to play clawhammer style banjo.

Looking back on the past, most of all I am grateful for having been able to work at safe collegial hospitals which encouraged medical practice at a high level. Second only to providing for my family, that has always been my top priority. Come to think of it, maybe that’s how I’d like to be remembered.

I learned to fly and got my Private Pilot certification at age 19, still a teenager! I received my Airframe & Powerplant Mechanic certification when I was 21, and I graduated with my Bachelor of Science Degree at 22. I worked for a short while as an Aircraft Dispatcher and then as a Mechanic for a cargo airline at Lambert Field. I then went to work for McDonnell Aircraft Company as a Flight Test Engineer at the Naval Air Test Center, Patuxent River, Maryland, for three years. Returning to St. Louis, I continued in the Engineering Technology field for eight more years, and then in the Quality field for two years. A few years before the merger with Boeing, I was recruited into the Cost Estimating department, where I worked on a multitude of projects and proposal teams across the company for the next twenty-four years. In 2011, I worked for a new start-up division called Boeing Energy Solutions and studied Solar PV and renewable energy. I spent the last five years of my career serving the Phantom Works (“skunk works”) Division. When I left Boeing, I had been on the payroll for 37 years, not knowing where the time went, but enjoying a very colorful career there. It enabled me to provide well for my family, having five wonderful children, three daughters and two sons. I then became a licensed Healthcare Insurance Agent in Missouri and Illinois because I wanted to help people with the messy and confusing business of health care. This was short-lived, though, because I soon had to take care of my aging parents. I had already taken care of an Aunt and a Great Aunt, and when all this began, I had no idea of what was in store for me - I could write a book. I just finished a “whirlwind” of ten years of caring for the elderly, with the last five caring for my dad who passed away earlier this year at 95. Four years ago I sold my home, the fifth one I had owned, and downsized as much as possible. I purchased and live in an RV camper, and am about to depart to the great West. I began studying Geology and got back to being a rockhound, collecting rocks, minerals, and gems, and have a substantial collection. I was the 2nd VP for the St. Louis Mineral & Gem Society for the past four years, publishing the monthly newsletter called “Rock Lore”. Still a photography enthusiast, I am learning macro photography skills.

Noteworthy and/or Interesting Accomplishments: Certified private pilot at age 19, certified aircraft mechanic at age 21, and a multicolored, varied career in the aerospace industry (Petroleum Air Transport, McDonnell Douglas and Boeing) for 38 years. Raising five great kids and helping others wherever I’m planted.

How Would You Like to be Remembered? During my whole life, I had many hobbies and pursued many interests. I am extremely grateful to my father, who enabled me to have the great gift of education. I will always be a life-long learner. He left a legacy to his family, and I hope to be the same to mine. Being a phenomenal Gemini, articulate, sociable, versatile, and adventurous, I am The Grasshopper On The Road (Arnold Lobel).

I was blessed with five great kids; left to right, Lindsey, Laurie, Leisa, Stephen and David
At 30 years old, I still had hair, but not for long!
I lived in Connecticut during the summer of ‘77, where I worked as an apprentice aircraft mechanic. On my days off, I had a blast flying this bird, a Citabria with 150 HP engine. It’s a strong airplane with wooden wings and a tubular steel fuselage, and I learned some basic aerobatic maneuvers in it.

Favorite De Smet Memories: All of the basketball games were great fun, but especially the 1973 Missouri State Championship final four games. I also remember traveling with several other students along with Mr. McMahon and Mr. Boehm to spend a weekend in a cabin, sitting around a campfire and playing acorn wars, students against teachers.

Favorite Teacher: Mr. McMahon. I was a quiet kid and he made an effort to get to know me. I’m 67 now and I still remember him for that.

Spouse: Xiaodan Qiu (She goes by “Dawn”)

College Degree(s): BA Psychology, St. Louis University; BA Mathematics, University of Missouri-St. Louis

Life After Graduation: I went to work for Bi-State (now Metro) and I wrote the very first Metrolink light rail schedule used in the City of St. Louis. I moved to Charlotte, NC in 2001 and ended up writing the first light rail schedule used in Charlotte also. I married my wife Xiaodan, who is originally from China, and I’ve traveled with her to China a dozen times. I retired, but I do a little work on the side for a consultant called HNTB, and I also work a few days each week as a substitute teacher at Charlotte Catholic High School. I’ve made many good friends playing senior softball, which is as much about being social as it is about being competitive.

Noteworthy/Interesting Accomplishments: Professionally I’ve had the good fortune to work on a number of interesting projects. In 1999 I planned out the temporary adjustments to City bus service to accommodate Pope John Paul II’s motorcade that went through St. Louis. I led the City of Charlotte’s efforts to provide transportation related to the Democratic National Convention held in Charlotte in 2012. In 2000 I finished the St. Louis marathon in a totally forgettable time. I’ve been to China a lot and I’ve picked up a pretty good working knowledge of the language. I got ordained on-line and I legally married my niece to her now husband when his military brother (military can marry people) was unable to get a furlough.
