De Smet has more than 80 endowed scholarships, worth a total of nearly $5.7 million. Raising funds to support student scholarships is one of De Smet’s most important priorities.
Since September 5, 1967, when the doors of De Smet Jesuit High School opened to 244 excited young men, the Class of 1971 has led the way in establishing traditions and helping to create the culture of the school. By definition, almost everything it did was a first. Last year the class notched another milestone when it celebrated the first 50th year reunion in De Smet’s history. A committee of 1971 alumni worked for almost two years on the project. Reunion highlights included a massive “Yearbook,” the brainchild of Dave Bussmann, a Mass of Remembrance, organized by Jim Finkenkeller, and other events and activities.
The 50th Reunion year ended on a high note, with the class raising more than $215,000 (including a $25,000 bequest commitment) to support De Smet Jesuit through its Class Gift.
More than $78,000 was raised to support the Class of 1971 Endowed Scholarship, Some $113,000 was raised for other programs, including unrestricted support through the Blackrobe Society.
The Class of 1971 Endowed Scholarship is one of 27 such named class scholarships. With the new fundraising gifts and pledges, there will be approximately $91,000 in De Smet Jesuit’s endowment. These endowments annually pay out about 5% for scholarship support.
Fall 2021 proved to be an important time for the Class of 1991 to re-connect with both each other and De Smet Jesuit. Close to one-third of our class gathered for our 30th Reunion Weekend in September, which was the highest attendance we’d seen in years! Several classmates traveled quite a distance to be part of the events. The spirit and participation continued in November when close to 20% of the class proudly contributed to the record-setting Giving Tuesday campaign. There was an overwhelming sense of generosity and willingness to participate in such a crucial e ort that provides needed scholarship funds for both current and future Spartans. I’m optimistic that our class’ involvement and enthusiasm for giving back will continue to grow in the years ahead!
