Looking Ahead To Summer

by Dave Eggers Pinellas County Commissioner Celebrating the start of the summer, we all get to salute our fallen heroes on Memorial Day. We get to remember other heroes on June 6th, D-Day. On June 17th, we get to celebrate heroes close to home, our Dads!

I was also thinking of our high school seniors graduating and either moving on to college or directly into the workforce. Let’s face it, most of us weren’t sure of our career path when we graduated. In fact, many of us have had to reset several times before we found our eventual path. Even though sometimes we get pressed into making quick decisions, I would suggest researching opportunities, talking to those on career paths you admire, and essentially understanding the many options available as you decide about what job is or will be right for you.

In the Tampa Bay region, we continue to try and bring new companies to the area. We try to retain others while doing our best to continue improving on the diversity of jobs and skill sets required and in raising the wage levels for as many people as possible. With unemployment being low, with the continuing aging of our work force and with being the number one area in Florida for manufacturing, I would suggest there are many opportunities available right here in Pinellas County. We continue to espouse economic development. It really comes right down to having jobs available for you, so you will have the option of

continuing the next phase of your life without having to leave the area.

Many of you will be college bound and seeking more schooling to prepare for a career later.

Or, maybe you are still trying to find your niche that will come to you later as you attend one of the many wonderful colleges in our area, state and beyond. More of you will stay in the area looking to further specific skill sets that will have you working sooner than later, doing something that you will love, and making a difference earlier in your life. There are technical schools. There are certifications. There are many courses of action that will prepare you to get to work “now.”

There are so many people ready to help you figure out your employment path. Every business is looking for talent that begins with high work ethic, impeccable character and a thirst for more knowledge. There are search firms that can help.

There are counselors, too. There are so many business owners that would share some experiences.

There are also “mentors” that just want to make a difference in someone’s life. There are job opportunities in nursing, in all kinds of manufacturing, in many of our local governments, and on and on.

Night school and additional technical training can complement your job or prepare you for an even better one. Remember, your future is yours. You just need to be curious, hardworking, aggressive and a person of your word. While you may need a few years to figure it out, you will find your eventual path. Best wishes to all of you new graduates.

The Sheriff’s Beat

by Bob Gualtieri Pinellas County Sheriff As of June 1st, Hurricane Season has blown back into town as quickly as it left last November.

Floridians know as well as anyone how unpredictable hurricanes can be and how abruptly their paths can shift. If there is one thing Hurricane Irma taught us, it is to be prepared.

First and foremost, you must know in what evacuation zone you reside. Evacuation zones are based on several factors, including ground elevation and vulnerability to storm surge.

During a potential disaster, emergency management and public safety officials are in constant communication with each other and other agencies, like the National Weather Service, to ensure we are as educated as possible before making decisions about what areas should evacuate and when.

But if citizens don’t know that they are required to leave, they won’t.

Learn your evacuation zone by typing your address into the map at www.pinellascounty.org/ knowyourzone or by calling the Pinellas County Interactive Hurricane Evacuation Inquiry Line at (727) 453-3150 and entering the landline associated with the location in question.

If you live in a barrier island community, make sure you are registered for and know where you have placed your emergency access permit.

When a mandatory evacuation order is lifted, law enforcement officials will scan emergency access permits at designated re-entry points.

Barrier island residents may register directly with their City government during its general office hours year round, so don’t wait until an evacuation order has been issued to secure yours.

If you registered for and still possess your emergency access permit from years prior, you do

not need to register again. If you don’t know if you need a permit, go online to www.pcsoweb.com/ emergency-access-permit or call the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office non-emergency phone line at (727) 582-6200.

Just as you should have an escape plan in case of a fire, it is important that you plan ahead for what you should do in case of a hurricane.

Again, don’t wait until the last minute.

If you plan to stay at your residence, create a hurricane survival kit with plenty of bottled water, canned or dry foods that won’t go bad, a batterypowered radio, candles, basic first-aid items, vital medications, etc. Visit www.pinellascounty.org for a list of suggested hurricane survival kit items.

If you plan to evacuate, we highly recommend staying with friends or relatives, or in a hotel if possible. However, if you have no alternate accommodations, Pinellas County has 34 potential emergency shelters. A few of these shelters are specifically designated for citizens with special needs but are limited to basic medical monitoring and back-up electricity for lighting. If you know that you and your family would need transport assistance to any Pinellas County shelter, register ahead of time to ensure you receive it. You can register online at www.pinellascounty.org/specialneeds.

For a full list of shelters, visit Pinellas County Government’s website. Keep in mind that not all shelters will open for every evacuation, so check www.pinellascounty.org/emergency or call the Citizen Information Center at (727) 464-4333 to learn which are open.

Finally, stay connected. Leading up to a potential hurricane or other emergency, it is our top priority to keep citizens informed so that we can all get through it together and as efficiently as possible. Follow the Sheriff’s Office and Pinellas County Government on Facebook and Twitter and look for “#GetReadyPinellas” for posts including preparation tips, situation-specific details, evacuation orders, etc. Also, download the free Ready Pinellas app in the App Store or Google Play to receive updates as they are issued.

Local Club Receives State And National Honors

A

t their meeting on Monday, May 21st, the Caladesi Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution honored community volunteers along with club members who donated time, finances and resources to knit items for Head Start this year.

As volunteers and chapter members enjoyed a wonderful luncheon, they also received other awards including two National Awards; eight State Awards, including two First in the State of Florida; 33 Chapter Awards and State awards for 24 individual chapter members. A total number of 166 awards were presented by Club Regent, Cheryl Renneckar.

Race Car Models Brighten Hospital Experience

D

ennis Harten, of Harten Dynamics, was the guest speaker at a recent Kiwanis Club of Dunedin meeting. Harten presented information about Children’s Dream Racer (CDR), a 501(c)(3) non-profit entity that builds child-sized racing car models and places them in hospitals for children to enjoy during their hospital stays.

Each car is equipped with a flat panel TV, CD/DVD player, Play Station, IV stand and oxygen bottle holder. These model cars are built with the same materials as Nascar race vehicles. The cars have easy-roll casters with safety locks.

The goal of CDR is to place cars in every children’s hospital in the United States. The non-profit

Florida Amendment 2: Limitations On Property Tax Assessments

by Mike Twitty Pinellas County Property Appraiser Last month, I wrote about Florida Amendment 1, the proposed increase of Homestead Exemption which is on the ballot November 6th. This additional $25,000 Homestead Exemption benefits only homestead properties over $100,000 in assessed value. As a reminder, you can find out if your property will benefit from Amendment 1 by accessing the Will You Benefit? 3rd Homestead Estimator tool at www.3hxestimator.org or via a link from the home page of our website at www.pcpao.org.

This month, I will discuss Amendment 2, Limitations on Property Tax Assessments, which will also be on the ballot November 6th. Back in 2008, voters approved a constitutional amendment that created a cap on the assessed value of nonhomestead property, preventing it from increasing more than 10 percent each year. This came to be commonly known as the 10 percent cap, or NonHomestead Cap. Any property that is not homesteaded qualifies for the Non-Homestead Cap, no matter what

Spring Into Community Service: Be A Poll Worker

by Deborah Clark Pinellas County Supervisor of Elections Voters in Pinellas County have two elections on the horizon. First, is the Primary Election on August 28th. Then, on November 8th, voters will consider multiple proposed constitutional amendments, whom to elect to the U.S. Senate and as Governor, as well as other important positions in our state and local governments. Consequently, we need poll workers.

We need citizens who are civic-minded and ready to serve. It takes 2,500 people to prepare polling places, conduct the election and complete post-election tasks after the polls close at 7pm.

If you are interested in serving as a poll worker, Florida law requires that you be a registered or pre-registered voter in Pinellas County, be able to read and write English, and attend the required poll worker training classes for the assigned position. We also need poll workers who are proficient in speaking English and Spanish.

Poll worker positions include the following: • Clerk, who oversees all operations at the polling place, sets up the voting equipment, assists voters required to vote provisional ballots and has added

However, the 10 percent Non-Homestead Cap was only approved for a 10-year period and is scheduled to sunset on January 1st, 2019. It should be noted that this cap does not apply to school district taxes; thereby schools are not adversely impacted by the cap’s existence.

If Amendment 2 passes with 60 percent of the vote, the 10 percent cap will be become permanent on non-homestead properties and the current process of capping assessed value will remain in place.

If the amendment does not pass, the 10 percent cap will expire resulting in its removal from any non-homestead parcels that may currently benefit. Non-passage of the amendment is estimated to cost Pinellas County property owners an estimated $35.5 million in additional taxes based on 2017 values and tax rates. With the 10 percent cap providing some stability for renters, businesses, owners of vacant lands, snowbirds and 2nd homeowners, the potential exists for non-passage to adversely impact our real estate market and local economy. Removal of the cap would tilt the scale of equality in an inequitable manner, placing even more real estate tax burden upon non-homesteaded property owners.

Keeping The Seas Safe

T

he Clearwater Coast Guard Auxiliary prides itself with keeping mariners safe from the seas with their frequent on-the-water patrols and search and rescue missions. However, they are also dedicated to keeping the seas safe from the mariners.

Despite a somewhat chilly start and strong winds, members and guests of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary took to their boats on a Saturday afternoon to visit three of the spoil islands in the Intracoastal Waterway, off Clearwater and Dunedin, to pick up trash. The team was pleased to find the islands in pretty good shape, but there was still the usual assortment of cans, bottles and food wrappers. Other items included a rusty lawn chair, a metal iron spike, plastic bags and far too many wet wipes.

Two of the islands were hosts to several campers with tents, canoes, kayaks and several dogs.

Based on the items picked up as trash, it appears that most of these campers are cleaning up after

responsibilities prior to Election Day and after the polls are closed.

• Assistant Clerk, who assists the precinct clerk with voter eligibility phone calls, paperwork and other duties as specified by the clerk.

• Machine Manager, who assists in setting up voting equipment, handles technical support for the voting equipment, assists voters and has additional responsibilities after the polls are closed.

• Ballot Distribution Manager, who is responsible for distributing ballots to voters and balancing the number of ballots cast with the number of ballots issued.

• Inspector, who determines voter eligibility and assists in closing the precinct.

• Precinct Deputy, who maintains order at the polling place, helps set up and close the polling place, designates the “no political activity” area and ensures the polling place is ADA compliant.

Poll workers are paid for attending training classes and working on Election Day. The pay ranges from $140 to $265, depending on the assigned position.

If you are a member of a non-partisan organization, you could use our Partner at the Polls program as a fundraising opportunity. Members of your organization would serve as poll workers on Election Day. Then, for payment, we would cut one check to your organization.

Although serving as a poll worker requires long hours and keen attention to duties, it is very rewarding. If you want to make a difference in your community and country, please consider serving as a poll worker.

This Coastal Cleanup was unique because the Clearwater Coast Guard Auxiliary partnered with both the Dunedin Boat Club and Dunedin Youth Sailing Association. While the Dunedin Boat Club boats worked the same islands as the Coast Guard Auxiliary, the Dunedin Youth Sailing Association members cleaned up islands closer to their launch site because the strong winds made it unsafe for them to travel very far.

Pinellas County residents who are aware of an island or section of shoreline that needs to be cleaned up are encouraged to report it to Keep Pinellas Beautiful. Experience has shown that once an area is cleaned up, people are less likely to leave their trash behind.

Coast Guard Auxiliary Clearwater Flotilla 111’s area of responsibility extends from the Belleair Bridge in the south to Stevenson Creek in the north. Their missions mirror those of the Active Duty Coast Guard with the exception of law enforcement and related activities. Being stewards of the environment and assisting boaters in distress are just two of the many missions completed by the members of the Clearwater Flotilla. Summer Programs

by Erin Hollingsworth Branch Manager If you are looking for something educational and entertaining for your children and grandchildren this summer, make sure to stop by the library for our summer reading programming.

We have something for all ages, including a newly-added Summer for Little Ones on Tuesday mornings at 10:30am. Designed for little ones, ages 0-3, this series of programs includes Toddler Two Step on the first Tuesdays, which includes interactive stations that encourage the development of fine and gross motor skills; Zumbini on the second Tuesdays, a high-energy program in which babies and toddlers enjoy vibrant and exciting music and movement activities presented by Mary Brown; Music for Little Ones on the third Tuesdays, in which our special guest Music with Mar’s Karen Gliddon leads a family music class and Baby-Wearing Workouts on the fourth Tuesdays, a fitness class for caregivers who are interested in learning how to work out while wearing their little ones.

We will also offer our ever-popular Terrific Tuesdays, designed for elementary ages, in which we will host an exciting performer at 2pm. For those who are interested in learning, or playing, chess, we have our Chess Club on Wednesdays at 3pm. Enjoy stories and crafts at our Family Storytime events geared for early elementary ages on Thursdays at 10:30am. We will also have a special Saturday event on June 16th at 2pm in which children can make their own scratch art with special guest, Miss Jill.

Public Service Commission Testimony And Report

by Mayor Julie Ward Bujalski City of Dunedin As many of you may already know, the City Manager and I traveled to Tallahassee to testify before the Public Service Commission (PSC). This is the board that oversees the electric companies across the state of Florida.

The purpose of the testimony was to enlighten them about our experience here in Dunedin, during Hurricane Irma.

It was really important to us that we took your voice directly to those who represent you. Here was my testimony: As the Mayor of a small town, everyone looks to me for answers. Because we had no electricity, we had to think of unique ways to communicate with our residents. Especially our seniors, as many of them do not use smartphones, they do not text, email or use social media. With no electricity, they had no landlines or televisions and were left extremely vulnerable. Dunedin has the largest saturation of 55 and older residents in the most densely populated county in the state. So this is an obvious concern to us. With no easy way of getting them information about their electric service, we physically hand delivered flyers to our 55 and older communities. But this information came from the City, not Duke.

Fun Summer Reading Program Incentives

by Phyllis Gorshe Library Director Get ready for our Summer Reading Programs. We have programs for kids, tweens, teens and adults.

Many children, especially struggling readers, forget some of what they have learned in school during the summer months which is called the Summer Slide. It’s not a playground slide, but a slipping out of what they learned at school. It is important to keep young minds active and engaged during the summer months. Our youth programs encourage a weekly summer reading club with incentives and a schedule of wonderful programs. Research shows that participating in a summer reading program curbs the Summer Slide.

Mondays at 2pm are the big summer shows for elementary-age kids and families. No registration is required.

Dunedin those first seven days after the storm. And so, I would like to share with you “their” perspective...

While everyone in our community lost power, 76 percent lost power for the four- to seven-day range. And in the end, Irma was the equivalent of a “tropical storm” vs. a direct hit in our area.

62 percent of our population felt Duke’s communication during that time was “unresponsive.”

And while some communication was received, it was largely inaccurate.

During the power outage, a big source of frustration was the inability to restore an entire street or neighborhood. In other words, one side of a street would be restored while the other side was left without power for days and without any communication. Residents would flag down repair crews to try and get answers but because many of these crews were from all over the country, they did not have the same communication systems and they had very little ability to contact anyone while in the field. Many times, field crews thought the power had already been restored. This caused anger and pitted neighbor against neighbor.

Another communication frustration for many was the incorrect texts that were received from Duke. Texts were claiming power had been restored when it had not and the automated system could not understand the responses when this occurred.

When there was no “live” person for them to speak to, this became very frustrating and played out on Facebook for well over a week.

Of course, Duke put out a tentative blanket statement that most electricity should be restored

by Friday evening of that week. This gave folks something to look forward to. The obvious mistake was not updating this tentative restoration time the day before rather than the day after, when it was clearly apparent that it would not happen.

One example of the great distress this caused was the riot we barely escaped in one of our neighborhoods. There was a very large tree that fell across a power line. The neighborhood understood that this was very likely the issue for their lack of power. The City reported it through our County Emergency

Operations Center (EOC), as we were instructed to do. But, when Friday rolled around and crews had not come, the neighborhood knew that Duke’s proclaimed restoration deadline would not be met.

Over 30 residents came out with chainsaws threatening to remove the tree from the live power line. What made matters worse is that they were “live” streaming the situation on Facebook. The Sheriff had to be called to stop them from putting themselves in grave danger. Ironically, all it took to solve the issue was to drive around an adjoining neighborhood to find a repair crew, who subsequently came to disconnect the live wire and luckily, no one was hurt. All of this – because no one could reach a live person at Duke. Now, obviously, these residents acted inappropriately and out of sheer frustration – but this could have been avoided with a revised restoration time, given in advance.

Blast Of Fun

e all have our various summertime and holiday activities that we look forward to.

Some activities associated with the Fourth of July include barbeques, picnics, baseball games and trips to the beach. Perhaps this year you will join us in Delightful Dunedin to celebrate Independence Day, our way.

Festivities begin on the evening of July 3rd with the Hometown USA event. Dunedin Stadium gates will open at 5:30pm, just in time to grab a bite to eat, while the Dunedin Blue Jays warm up to defeat the Tampa Tarpons. Immediately following the baseball game, enjoy a blast of fun that will light up the sky with our fabulous 20-minute firework display choreographed to patriotic, hometown music. To wrap up a perfect night and following the firework display, the band, Big Brother will open with a drum roll and perform until 11pm.

Entrance to the Hometown USA is free; however, a free ticket for the baseball game must be obtained from the ticket booth on the day of the game.

The City of Dunedin Parks & Recreation Department and the Dunedin Blue Jays have partnered with the Dunedin Cares Food Pantry in the nationwide Food Drive sponsored by Bush’s Baked Beans and Minor League Baseball. In addition to the free Hometown USA ticket, support our local food pantry by donating peanut butter and jelly, cereal and Pop Tarts at the game and you will receive a complimentary ticket to the Saturday, July 21st Dunedin Blue Jay’s game. And of course, there was my own personal experience with attempting to communicate with Duke. The City was instructed to communicate with Duke through the County EOC. And we did so for the first four days. But our communications were not getting addressed, including the tree issue mentioned earlier. When we reached out to our Government Liaison at Duke, we were met with “mailbox full” messages and no return emails. On day seven after the storm, I resorted to Duke’s Facebook page, requesting immediate response. And luckily, within several hours, I finally got a live person who helped bring the rest of our neighborhoods back on line.

But what I found really ironic was that there was NO protocol in place for this assigned Liaison to make contact with us during this post storm event.

Bang! Clang! Splat! Boom!

by Lois Eannel Library Director No…those aren’t the sound effects from a Batman movie but rather the sound of progress as our library addition gets closer to completion. Unfortunately, due to several delays, we could not offer our normal range of summer programs due to the lack of a Community Room. While space issues prevent us from having the “typical” array of events and performers, the Youth Services Department has pulled together some creative, fun summer programming that focuses on at home, offsite, online and after hours! After all, summer reading can be done anywhere and we are providing a few incentives to keep the kids on track with the Libraries Rock summer theme.

Summer Highlights

6/1, 6/8 & 6/15, Family Fun at Brooker Creek Preserve: Literacy in Nature, 10-11am. Join us at Brooker Creek Preserve on Keystone Road for stories, activities and crafts related to the world around us. Literacy in Nature will also take place on July 6th and 13th. GFWC Clearwater Community Woman’s Club Awards $8,000 In Grants To Local Charities

t the annual Daisy Grants Fashion Show and Luncheon, at the Belleair Country Club, the GFWC Clearwater Community Woman’s Club awarded four local charities each $2,000 grants. These charities were among a number of worthy local charities that applied for the grants in January 2018 and demonstrated a specific need for the funds.

The Daisy Grants were awarded to the Lighthouse of Pinellas, Inc,; the Kimberly Home, Inc.; Goodwill Industries-Suncoast, Inc. and Empath Health/Suncoast Hospice.

Daisy Grants are awarded to local charities each year at the Daisy Grants Fashion Show and Luncheon, the club’s major spring fundraiser.

They have had a taste of long term power outages and they do not want to go through this again.

In closing, we need a greater investment in capital assets, more commitment to under-grounding and better vegetation management. But equally important are the residents and business owners who pay the electric bills – they need communication so that they can determine when their income stream can be reinstated and when their families can get back to normal living.

Reading With The Rays And Much More

by Susan Hurley Library Director Summer break is here, and with that comes Summer Reading at the Oldsmar Library! We have a full schedule of programs for children of all ages for the next two months, and we encourage you to bring your kids in to participate in programs and find some reading materials to help prevent the dreaded Summer Slide. It is important for children to keep reading over the summer, so that knowledge and information learned during the school year isn’t forgotten over the long break.

A good way to help children gain an interest in the library is by attending programs, and we have a lot to offer this year. Cancer Care

by Oscar Menendez, DDS, MAGD, FACD, FICOI Comprehensive Dental Care Doctor, I have cancer, what should I do?

I am unfortunately asked this question way too often. Patients diagnosed with cancer have special needs when it comes to their dental treatment. It is important for patients and their dentists to discuss dental treatment, its unique aspects during cancer treatment, and what effects cancer and cancer treatment can have on the patient’s mouth.

What effect does cancer have on the mouth? Cancer – no matter where in the body it occurs – can affect teeth, gums, salivary glands, and other tissues in the mouth.

How does cancer treatment affect the mouth? Chemotherapy and radiation treatments can affect the mouth, causing side effects that may include pain in the mouth and gums; mouthsores (oral mucositis); dry mouth (xerostomia); tooth decay; burning or swollen tongue; jaw stiffness; problems eating, speaking and swallowing; decreased ability to taste; gum disease and bleeding; and a weakened immune system.

What should a patient do before beginning cancer treatment? It is important for you to schedule a thorough dental exam at least two weeks before cancer treatment begins. You should be sure to update your medical history at your dentist’s office and tell your dentist about your physician, treatment, and other aspects of your cancer diagnosis so that your dentist knows how best to treat you and support your physician’s treatment plan.

How should cancer patients care for their mouths? Patients who have cancer should continue a regular oral hygiene program, including brushing teeth and gums with a soft bristle brush two to three times per day. You should

Every Monday at 2pm, we show a movie and serve up fresh popcorn for everyone to enjoy. Each Monday in June, starting on the 11th, we will be showing The Incredibles, Coco and Paddington 2. In July, we will be showing The Peanuts Movie, Hotel Transylvania 2 and The Emperor’s New Groove. Movie Mondays are for children and families of all ages and a great way to get out of the heat during the summertime.

Children can also learn a lot from making, building and creating things, and we have several programs to encourage their more artistic side. In June, on Thursday the 14th at 2pm, children ages 7 and up are welcome to participate in Perler Bead Crafting. A week later, on the 21st, kids are invited to make a bunch of noise by participating in a drum circle, hosted by Giving Tree Music. All of the drums will be provided and no musical talent or knowledge is needed in order to have a great time!

At the end of the month, on the 28th at 2pm, children of all ages are invited to come and get creative with our large LEGO collection to build items that will be featured in the display case in the library for the month of August. Our LEGO Club participants always create interesting pieces, and we want to share their builds with all of our library visitors!

Along with these exciting programs, we have a lot of other things going on this summer. We have the Reading with the Rays and our Libraries Rock! reading programs, where kids can keep track of time spent reading to get fun prizes. And for the second year in a row, we are having our summer break spot partnership with Pinellas County Schools and the

use a soft bristled toothbrush; if the bristles are too hard, you can either rinse the toothbrush in hot water for 15 seconds to soften them or use an ultra-soft toothbrush. Use a mild tasting toothpaste because flavored pastes might irritate your mouth. If toothpaste does irritate your mouth, you can rinse with a solution of salt and water. You also can use an antibacterial mouth rinse for gum disease, but avoid mouth rinses that contain alcohol. Gently floss your teeth at least once per day.

What can patients do about dry mouth?

Cancer patients who experience dry mouth should clean their mouths and teeth at least four times per day and floss at least once per day. If there are areas of bleeding or soreness of the gums, floss gently or avoid flossing those areas altogether. Cancer patients need to use a fluoride toothpaste when brushing their teeth and apply a fluoride gel as recommended by their dentist. Patients also can rinse their mouths several times per day with a solution of baking soda and salt in warm water, followed by rinsing with water. Your dentist also may recommend a mouth rinse you can use in addition to regular brushing and flossing.

What should a cancer patient eat? Because of the changes in the ability to taste, patients who are undergoing cancer treatment may find it more difficult to eat the foods they are used to eating. Cancer patients should eat a balanced diet, including soft, moist foods like cooked cereal, mashed potatoes, and scrambled eggs, or as recommended by their physician. It is important for patients undergoing cancer treatment to get the right amount of nutrients and calories. If needed, patients can take vitamin supplements that provide healthy minerals and calories. Avoid using tobacco and drinking alcohol during treatment. Acidic foods, such as grapefruit, orange juice, and tomato sauce, may cause irritation.

Patients also should avoid acidic, high-sugar beverages like soda and energy drinks.

Cases in point include our version of a “Redbox” machine located outside the front lobby where with a library card you can select a DVD and/or best seller for free, a children’s art Maker Space, a loaning musical instrument collection, a portable kitchen unit to provide monthly gastronomical delights and of course, my personal favorite, a vinyl collection. Our beautiful new field, located behind the Centre, is now being used for Fit Camp. What is Fit Camp you ask? It is a great program for all ages, all fitness levels and all income levels. The program is always free and is lead by a fitness instructor with many years of experience. Fit Camp meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Centre Field at 6:30pm. Now you have no excuses, the price is right!

Inside you will discover: • A new Friends of the Library Book Store all done in mint green and teal • A new coffee shop entitled Bernie’s Bistro (more on that later) • A 44” TV for program alerts, Karaoke Nights and other similar programs • A portable stage for after-hours programs such as poetry slams, comedy nights, musical events, etc.

• Track lighting • A new seating area with high/low chairs and tables • Whimsical lighting • All glass fronted • All vinyl-tile flooring in simulated wood grain • All presented in colors of cranberry red, floral bouquet green and orange sherbet (Yes, these colors with the mint and teal do go well together! • And finally, with the exception of the shelving, everything is moveable so we can change-up the room as need be.

None of this would have been possible with-

If you are looking to help with some random acts of kindness this summer, we are always looking for donations and volunteers. Your community Centre is a collection site for the F.E.A.S.T Food Pantry, Clothes-to-Kids, Pack-a-Snack and the Humane Society. All of these great organizations rely on our help and are always in need of community support.

In April, we hosted a great music festival at the Sunderman Complex. Everyone enjoyed the most beautiful weather and talented rock bands along with plentiful food and drink...now that’s what I call a winning combination! I hope to see you there next year when we “Rock Out” again!

Our school volunteers were celebrated and appreciated on May 17th. Many thanks to our business partners that supported this event. Thank you to all who volunteered, mentored and tutored this past school year. You certainly made a difference in the lives of our students!

Thank you to Lisa Lisman and the PTSA Board. They appreciated our teachers and staff the week of May 14th-18th. Hillary Regan will be our new PTSA President for the 2018-2019 school year, replacing Lisa Lisman. The PHMS Rocket Club’s last rocket launch of the 2017-2018 school year occurred on May 16th. Sky Crewe held an end of the year celebration on May 23rd as a very successful year came to an end. For the 2018-2019 school year, would be rocket club members will have to fill out an application. The top 25 candidates will be selected. Club dues will be $40 for the entire year and include a rocket and motors for the year. Instructor, Captain Mack has been building, flying and repairing rockets since 1966. It never gets old for him. PHMS is thankful for Captain Mack!

Launching Summer Reading

We will debut our brand new collection of Launchpad educational tablets. Our new STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Math) activity cart will also be out for youth to enjoy. This special event kicks off our Summer Reading Program for children, teens and adults. We encourage all ages to read throughout the summer and sign up for our incentives to win rewards and prizes. Sarah Tinsley Wins Good Citizens Scholarship Award

S

arah Tinsley, a senior at Tarpon Springs High School, was awarded the Good Citizens Scholarship Award from the Tarpon Springs Princess Chasco Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Sarah was presented the scholarship at the Tarpon Springs High School Senior Awards Ceremony on May 10th, 2018. This award recognizes and rewards high school seniors who possess the citizenship qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism in their homes, schools and communities.

Sarah is the daughter of Mike and Charlotte Tinsley of Tarpon Springs.

The 18-year-old graduated in the top 3 percent of her class with a 4.41+ GPA. She is a member of the National Honor Society and Key Club.

Sarah is an award-winning member of the nationally recognized Tarpon Springs Band Woodwind Ensemble and is currently President of the Band Program. Sarah is a talented dancer and has studied and taught many styles of dance.

High school senior, Sarah Tinsley is this year’s recipient of the Good Citizens Scholarship Award. organizations, including the Tarpon Historical Society, Florida Hospital, the Shepherd Center and fundraising for Shriners Hospital for Children.

Sarah loves to travel and has been to 27 states in America and has traveled abroad to France, Spain, Italy, England, Switzerland, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean.

Her teachers describe her as an outstanding leader and scholar who is a great role model for other students and those she meets in the community. They also say she works well with people and has a cheerful and positive personality.

Sarah plans on attending Miami University in the fall. ◆
