LEGACY. COMMITMENT. MINISTRY
In this adaptive re-use project, Budget requirements precluded expanding the building, creating a three-dimensional puzzle that required improvisation and inspiration to complete.
The centerpiece is an intimate 200 seat jazz-centric performance hall, outfitted with unparalleled acoustical and visual technology that competes with the best national venues. A Constellation Sound System in combination with 270-degree projection mapping capabilities which allows artists an unlimited performance that can be recorded and broadcast to a worldwide audience.
In addition to the performance hall, a state-of-the-art recording studio with five isolated performance rooms provide artists flexibility in use and sound. Extending off the lobby, the Jazzbird venue offers another unique opportunity for performance and gathering. The space evokes the ‘shotgun’ character of many historic jazz bars that revolutionized the industry.
The ministry program spaces are seamlessly integrated and juxtaposed to the high energy music spaces. An intimate prayer room, entered from the performer/admin lobby, features a dramatic two story cylindrical lightwell. This amorphous void is carved out of a poche in the wall, compressing the threshold and turning a corner before opening into celestial heights. The prolate, intimate Chapel provides the users with a larger, communal gathering space.
Inspiration for the design, details and palette were drawn from the construction of the owner’s main instrument, an exquisite piano that bears his name. A rich selection of materials runs throughout the building,
unifying the varying programs with subtle details and harmonious design. Each material is celebrated, complimenting the refinement of this project, and paying homage to the craftsmanship.

Avondale Visitor and Conference Center
FORWARD THINKING. PLACE MAKING. EXPERIENCE. CULTURE. FUNCTION.
The Avondale Civic Center was designed to provide a responsibly funded, sustainable functioning facility that is as aesthetically beautiful as it is poetically. Housing multiple sectors of the civic community including economic development, marketing, legal services and city council. The ultimate goal was to provide a safe comfortable space for their users as well as attract fortune 500 companies to invest in the city of Avondale.
The Estrella mountains are a pivotal symbol of Avondale. The building and more specifically the executive conference room, created a view shed to look directly out to the Estrella mountains, an impressive view for any new investor. Working with the community through the stakeholders, as well as weekly design updates provided the client the ability to inform the design as well as make changes to the design all the way through construction administration. The strong concept of the blossoming cotton plant excited the client and helped inform decisions throughout the entire process of design.
The architects and designers on the project took great care and analysis to study passive shading, placemaking, orientation of the building and exact location on the site to allow for optimal energy savings, acoustics, daylight, and optimal landscaping. Great care was taken to blur the lines between interior and exterior. The most prominent representation is the rusted metal panel and planter below which wraps from exterior to interior and houses real cactus on the interior of the building.

Goodyear Police Facility, Phase II
FUNCTION. DURABILITY. CALM
Goodyear Police department Phase was completed by Architekton in 2016. The first phase was designed for patrol, which included a welcome and evidence lobby, evidence bag and tag, briefing room, mail rooms, confrernce rooms, detention suite with cells and interview rooms, sallyport, kennels, as well as a gym facility, breakroom and locker rooms. For Phase II, Goodyear police as expanding rapidly and outgrowing their current offices for their chief and administration departments, criminal investigation, internal affairs, detectives and community relations.
The addition, Phase II also included a shooting range with Armory, ample storage for guns and ammo, POPAT and SWAT storage, a simulator room, training room, as well as new outdoor fitness running track and sled push.
With the guidance of the client and functional needs of the facility, Architekton was tasked with creating a fresh, calm, warm and inviting space for the police men and women who serve goodyear daily while integrating with the current building and concept, Phase I.
Architekton was given a little liberty to go a little outside of the original colors, which brought on The concept for this palette. “The calm after the storm” palette pulled the warm wood and dark metal colors from the original building while lightening the branded blue of poilice uniforms, and allowing for a fresh new take on police blue while invigorating the gathering spaces with pops of sunshine thorugh the clouds.
This project was delivered on-time and under-budget. A rare accomplishment in the wake of Covid.

Northwest Fire Administration Building
MODERN. WESTERN. WARM.
Northwest Fire Department is a private entity that serves the northwest area of Tucson, located in Marana Arizona. The site in which the Fire department had for the project was located in a tricky spot, as there was a major gas line running diagonally through the site. Architekton had taken great care to posisition the building on the site using every possible inch, in order to fit the large program of admin services that were to be housed.
The Client expressed a desire to showcase the building with a modern, western flare, that nods to the quintesential fire house with the inclusion of brick walls. After reviewing multiple concept options, the client decided on the use of rustic narnwood siding, board and beam ceilings, brick walls, and black metal accents, along with aged-looking furniture to bring this building to life.
There were multiple challanges to overcome with this project. The client was insistent in having a 3-story building, for a monumental feel, 2-story atrium, and a 3rd floor c-suite, overlooking the catalinas. During design, there were multiple VE efforts made, and the client had to make hard decisions in order to keep the visual components they valued mostbarely making it in to budget before ground-breaking.
The material costs soared while purchasing began for construction due to the wake of covid shortages. The client had to then make even more, hard decisions in order to finish the building on time, and on budget. Our hard-working team was able to continually service the client while making changes to the design every step of the way, and still not losing sight of the cohesive design.
