Dear members, Another one for our hearts! Our Children’s Day event! The excitement was palpable as the children from nine institutions arrived in eager expectation of a fun filled day. The setting was idyllic; an enormous air-conditioned hall surrounded by lush, green and natural vegetation. A variety show for the children by the children generated happy cheer and encouragement; games with numerous gifts abounded; the dance floor drew countless children who danced with abandon; and these were rounded off with a delicious lunch and the distribution of colourful party favours. A generous gift of footballs for each Institution from our Honorary Member from Brazil, Madam Lenise Barbosa saw animated young boys and girls bouncing and kicking their footballs around in glee. A photo session recorded the happy delight of the children. In the hands of our able Social Welfare section, Children’s Day became a pleasurable and stirring experience.

The Bazaar Committee members are justifiably confident in the knowledge that they have disseminated the information of our Grand 50th Bazaar 2017 to the relevant participants on the Business Stall Sales Day and the First Information morning for the embassies, both held this past May. The Bazaar, this year, will offer a unique insight into the history of WIC right up to its current modern embodiment.

The disbursement of our Bazaar proceeds is always accomplished through a group effort overseen by our Bazaar Proceeds Committee. Between the leadership of Nazneen and the attention of the committee members, the previous Bazaar’s proceeds were competently distributed and the handover successfully fulfilled. We thank the BPC for a task well handled.

A field trip to the Benteng Heritage Museum took our members down an extraordinary historic path with the detailed creations, period trim and iconic figures displayed in an awe inspiring way. The day had its moments of culture and learning, as well as fun and culinary enjoyment, which served to ensure that it was well spent.

Our Circle activities have resurfaced after a short hiatus, with the popular International cooking classes and Epicurean luncheons drawing interested members. Additionally, there was a very compelling talk on Women’s Health Care by Prodia, and the nutritious eating regimens that we must adopt. This informative programme was initiated by Dr. Aya, daughter of our Executive member, Gina Alamsyah.

It was entertaining to sit back and watch the pure creativity of our members shine through at our annual Talent Morning. The Circle Leaders volunteer their time to teach members new skills, and we take this opportunity to thank them immensely. Singing, musical instrument renditions, handicraft and fashion displays, and language proficiency were remarkably exhibited on that day.

Jakarta is many things to many people, it is rich in culture and tradition, it is modern and dynamic, it is the perfect blend of east and west. Our city has many faces and is filled with unexpected and wondrous corners! As we celebrated Jakarta’s Anniversary with lively Betawi and Ondel Ondel dances and serene angklung music, we also received an interesting, revelatory and favourable overview from our speaker Pak Deftianov, ST, MSE, Head of the Sub division for Development Financing at the BAPPEDA, on what the future holds for Jakarta. Cheers to our beloved city!

We are very sad to bid farewell to Her Excellency Ambassador Nengcha Lhouvum from India, Honorary Member Madam Diana LopatoZagorskaya from Belarus, Honorary Member Madam Wang Dan from the People’s Republic of China and Honorary Member Madam Nino Jakhua from Georgia. We express our thanks for their wholehearted participation in WIC’s activities and our Bazaar, and wish them happiness and success in the future. We will miss them indeed.

In May, the Clubhouse closed on 25th and 26th of May 2017 due to the first fasting (puasa) day.

In June, the Clubhouse closed from 21st of June 2017 until 6th of July 2017. The clubhouse will be decorated with a "Ramadhan theme".

WIC will be reopen on the 6th of July 2017 after the Idul Fitri Celebration.

In August, the Clubhouse will be decorated with red and white due to the theme of Indonesian Independence Day. To all members who celebrate, I wish you "HAPPY EID AL-FITRI AND MOHON MAAF LAHIR & BATHIN" 

On 16 May 2017, we had the Business Stall Sales Day and we are so pleased to say that with all your support, it turned out really well. We tried inviting some new vendors and also to re-locate them in various areas this time, bearing in mind the evaluations done from the previous bazaar.

The Evaluations are based on: • • • • •

The products that they sell; good, interesting or just fair.

The Attitude of the vendors; cooperative or not Their business income during the bazaar; good or inadequate The decorations on the stall ; neat or careless Is the stall busy/cluttered or empty

With all things considered, we managed to designate each stall in specific areas, making sure that everyone, hopefully, who walks around the bazaar will stop at each stall, thus making it more inviting and not tedious to the public.

We have created a waiting list for all the participants who applied after last year’s bazaar and if there are any cancellations, they will be served accordingly from the quality and variety of their product items.

Unfortunately, based on our evaluations, not all participants from last year have been chosen. We do try our best to fulfill a better outcome and have a good selection of various interesting, unique and special items which will differentiate and identify us from the rest.

For Food Stalls, we also try to have a good selection of various foods with none of them having the same items or menus.

On 31 May 2017, we had the 1st Embassy Information Meeting. 36 Embassies were in attendance.

The bazaar theme: “Unity in Diversity” was explained as per Ibu Iriana Joko Widodo’s opening speech during our last year’s bazaar, including the procedures and various stages we need in preparation for the upcoming 50th WIC Annual Charity Bazaar 2017.

Plus our plans to also share WIC’s Bazaar journeys from the very 1st one till the 49th and of course this year’s 50th with a mini-exhibition at the lobby of Hall B at JCC.

The step-by-step detailing of the designs of our bazaar publications and promotional items are well-underway.

Approaching various possible sponsors can prove to be quite a challenge so we are now making sure we tackle this in the most positive way. Hopefully, with all your support and prayers, all the preparation stages to our GOLDEN Bazaar will be sorted out soon.

Please allow us to share with you all, as Our Team has now reached a final decision, our logo for our 50th WIC Annual Charity Bazaar 2017.

COUNTRY FOCUS | BELGIUM

MY BELGIUM: THE XL PEOPLE IN AN XS COUNTRY Only ten years of my life have been spent in Belgium, the nation my husband represents in Indonesia. This is much less than my time in the Britain of my birth, and even than what I spent in other places around the world.

Does that make me less qualified to write about the country ? In a way it does, of course, as there are still major historic towns and cities I have yet to visit. But, like many other expatriate spouses representing an adoptive country, I also feel that I can somehow present it even better, or at least in a manner more relevant to foreign friends, fellow expatriates and other frequent flyers.

“My” Brussels and “my” Belgium are indeed very different from those my husband would describe to you : it has fewer facts and fewer figures, fewer important statesmen and venerable institutions, but at the same time it has more flavours and colours, more curious habits and quirky persons. The same way the Belgians themselves are usually hugely innovative and efficient, still rather unpretentious and understated, their country is like one of those small and modest looking homes that reveal unsuspected riches and treasures.

The “Grote Markten/Grand Places” of Brussels and Antwerp are among the best preserved examples of medieval and renaissance baroque city squares in Europe, and known for their unique architecture and intriguing stories of competing merchant guilds and severed hands (a nasty giant in Antwerp, a righteous alderman in Brussels), but if you walk away from them, beyond their busy crowns of narrow roads, curio outlets, Greek restaurants and lace shops, you will find a second web of small streets, with houses less ornate but hosting creative galleries and studios, talented milliners and designers, trendy bookshops and record stores. The same goes for Liège, where you don’t have to walk too far from the handsome St Lambert square to reach the more trendy dwellings by the river Meuse.

Also never far from the tourist-laden centers and their stony cathedrals, you will find the “Begijnhoven/Béguinages”, those intricate mazes of tiny little townhouses where nuns used to retire. Quiet and hugely pleasant for a stroll, they are also touching testimony to the deeply religious nature of the country in the Middle Ages, when science and technology was in the hands of abbots, and monks were crafting the best beers and cheeses (they still do by the way, don’t forget to try them!). Equally charming and rooted in history, though the tradition was only really recently revived after a long fall from grace, are the local markets, some food- some flea-, but all of them as welcoming and friendly as the small cafés and bakeries that surround them.

As antique and rare books and maps go, the stalls may not be as posh as the upmarket one of the “Sablon/Zavel”, but they are the place to be if what you really enjoy is “chiner” (to browse for old objects) or “faire les bouquinistes” (to visit old-book sellers), and if you don’t mind the foam of a cold beer instead of the ubiquitous Champagne bubbles of Sablon afternoons.

Grand-Place and tiny streets, Grand-Sablon and tiny markets, the examples of the cool little locations hidden behind the famous large squares are countless. The opposition can be declined in hundreds of fashions : from the backalley public gardens to the large Austrian-era parks, from the “communal” museums to the tall classical galleries of Ravenstein and Cinquantenaire, from Monsieur Victor Horta’s Art Nouveau bourgeois suburban townhouses to the imposing shiny temples of contemporary architecture of the Port of Antwerp (MAS) and the Liège High-Speed Railway Station (Guillemins) and from the multistarred restaurants that make the reputation of the country as the connoisseurs’ heaven to the little “locals” where food - whether indigenous or Asian or African - almost always proves out a foodie’s delight.

But in one instance at least, it is the “large” that lies hidden behind the “small”. Visiting the heart of Flanders, do not miss the quaint ancient bridges and belfries of Bruges, the ever-so-photogenic “Venice of the North”, but do not miss either the much more populous Ghent a few kilometers further south, every bit as beautiful, historical and romantic but also much more lively and arty and studenty and hipstery. And it has an incredible flowers exposition too!

But enough stones and roses, Belgium’s ultimate best kept secret is none of the above, but the Belgians themselves. An XL people squeezed in an XS territory. A discreet nation, wary of standing out but differing strikingly from all its much larger neighbours of France, Holland and Germany. They are as warm as their beaches and forests can be cold in the winter, they cultivate the funny and the absurd in rainy streets of dark red-bricks houses, they keep their window blinds and curtains tightly closed, but will always have their doors wide-open for you, with hot coffee and cold beer, or une-petitegoutte-de-quelque-chose (a-tiny-drop-of-something), waiting for the friend or the visitor. They like fun parties and muddy walks, great culture (Ah, Europalia Arts Festival and Kunstenfestivaldesarts) and a little bargain, and end up being every bit as endearing as the heroes of those comic-strips they produce in larger numbers than any other jurisdiction in the world. Hey, and they can do posh too, the country has more castles and manorhouses per square mile than any other country in the world.

Oh yes, before I forget: as mentioned earlier, Belgians are also hugely creative and efficient, more innovative and productive than almost any other people in the world. So if what you are looking for is not a candle-lit Christmas market or a hot open air summer music festival, just know that they are also top of the world in recycling, biotechnologies, clinical trials, maritime infrastructures, petrochemicals, smart and technical fabrics, renewables and waste-to-energy, nanotech.... This is actually worldclass research and development the Belgian way : without the snobbery and the showing off, and for a fraction of the tuition fee, like with the ancient University of Leuven that leads the global way in innovation... And this takes me back to old stones, Flemish masters, béguinages, fine beers (that girl Stella!), fashion designers and quirky cafés as Leuven, though comfortably hidden behind nearby Brussels, is the one Medieval gem I had forgotten to name so far... well, next to Tournai and Kortrijk and Namur and Dinant that is!

FEATURE | WELCOME CLUBS INTERNATIONAL

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE IN CYPRUS

Pooja Assomull Going International! I would like to announce that I attended the Welcome Clubs International Presidents’ Conference in Cyprus in May. The whole concept is similar to our Inter WIC Conference, but in this case with Clubs from diverse regions in the world meeting biennially.

Most of the Clubs’ missions and aims are comparable to ours. It was a very inspiring three days, with enlightening talks from illustrious people from the host country, and group round table discussions with the resulting suggestions presented by a speaker from the group, spectacular entertainment and sightseeing. As WIC Jakarta is a new member, I was additionally given a platform to speak about our Club’s cultural and social welfare undertakings, and did so wearing a Batik dress, all of which elicited admiration and numerous questions. To keep up with their newsletter, we will be sending a summarized activity report every quarter for all the International clubs’ members to read.

HEALTH | SELF CARE FOR WOMEN Dear Anita, My daughter’s boyfriend recently broke up with her and she is devastated. They were going out for three years. She is sad, angry, upset, and confused because she thought they would get married. As a mother I feel helpless and upset for her but I don’t know what to do to help her. Can you please advise me?

Dear Concerned Mother, Firstly, I am very happy about the fact that you want to help your daughter. Your presence and support are the most important things you can offer her now.

The emotions people experience when they break up with a partner, boyfriend or husband is similar to those we experience when we grieve. There are feelings of loss of the past, present and future.

There are unanswered questions and feelings of guilt and remorse. Her attitude may change from moment to moment and may confuse you.

My first advice to you is to be a good listener. Let her talk to you; let her express her emotions and thoughts to you and listen empathetically and fully absorb what she is saying without judgement. This will help her clarify her thoughts and be honest with you. Ask questions so she knows you care.

Secondly, ensure that she is taking care of her physical health and check if she has trouble sleeping at night.

Thirdly, try to help her with her feelings of guilt or self-criticism. For the moment it is better for her not to blame herself whether it was her fault or not.

Fourthly remind her that life is not perfect. Although we all would like to believe that people “should not” betray us, we learn as we get older that sometimes people can be unkind and life can be unfair.

Finally, keep an eye on her and if you feel she is unable move forward please take her to see a trained counselor or a psychologist who will be able to help her get through.

Anita Mulani is a former member of the WIC. She is a counselor at Essence Counselling in Perth, Australia.

She works with women on numerous issues such as grief, anxiety, depression, cultural adaptation and relationship problems. She also conducts individualized self-care workshops for people experiencing burn out either in their professional or personal lives.

From month to month, Anita will discuss topics that are common to many of us.

Lebanese Lamb Cutlets (Serves 4)

Ingredients: 2 tbsp olive oil 8 lamb cutlets 1/4 cup (60ml) lemon juice 1/2 tsp cracked black pepper 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon 1/4 tsppaprika 1/4 tspground cumin 2 tsp bottled crushed garlic 1 (300g) orange 1/2 cup (130g) hummus 1/4 cup loosely packed freshmint leaves Method: 1.

Heat oil in large frying pan over high heat.

Combine lamb, juice, pepper, spices and garlic in large bowl.

Cook lamb about 3 minutes each side or until cooked as desired.

Thickly slice orange.

Sprinkle hummus with a little extra paprika and cumin.

Children’s Day Children’s Day was held on Saturday 6th May at “Kinasih Resort Depok“.

420 Children and Caretakers from 9 institutions joined this event. Our WIC staff and their children were also invited.

It was very cheerful day full of laughter, fun and wonderful memories.

The program started with “Senam Sehat” morning exercise with all of the Children, Caretakers, WIC Ladies and SW Ladies.

Each Institution organized a performance on stage of singing and dancing.

The Children had rehearsed for this day and were happy with their performances. It was a great achievement for them.

SW Ladies and WIC Ladies made a spontaneous performance of dancing Gangnam Style. The children really loved it and danced with us.

Ibu Radius Prawiro the owner of “Wisma Kinasih” came to join us and sang with the children.

This year, part of the money donation was spent on the purchase of T-Shirts. One colour for each institution was provided in advance so they could come dressed uniformly.

Institution Reports An Nur * We adopted a new Institution “An Nur”. This is a school for neighbourhood children whose parents work as onion peelers at the “Kramat Jati Pasar Induk Market“. * Foster Aunts: Ningti Budiarti Ali Asra, Hae Kyung Kang There are 120 children (Grades 1 - 6) who have lunch with the teachers twice a month.

Unfortunately, there are no facilities to cook food at the school. Foster Aunts and the teachers prepare food at home and bring them to the school.

Foster Aunts also teach nutrition to the teachers and children.

Foster Aunts organise trainers from the Department of Agriculture to train them to grow vegetables on their land, so they can be more independent when our support finishes.

We helped them to start this program from the beginning, and supplied the seeds in addition to the seeds donated by “Panah Merah (East West Seed Co.)” through Ibu Yenny Tjia.

They can now harvest their produce and earn an income by selling it.

They also sell their handicraft products.

For the frail and needy, we provide basic food supplies.

Other Donations: Ibu Fauzia Afiff donated 4 Vietnamese Lacquer Screens and they were sold at the 1st Embassy Meeting for the Bazaar.

Our Benteng Heritage Museum Tour took place on Thursday, 18 May 2017, with group transportation on a bus. The trip was attended by 32 people, which included 9 guests.

The tour began with a heritage walk around Pasar Lama in Tangerang where one could learn the history of the area, and continued with the visit to a beautiful Chinese temple that is considered an iconic heritage building in the Tangerang area. The Bird House, not far from the temple is another historical house that was visited by the group.

The key point of the trip was the museum tour. A series of antique Chinese furniture and Chinese costumes, each with a historical background were displayed throughout the museum.

The trip was concluded by a delicious lunch provided by the museum.

Ayam Benteng, Rujak Penganten and Lontong Cap Gomeh was the local menu served on the day.

On Thursday, June 15, WIC celebrated Jakarta’s Anniversary by presenting Buluh Perindu, an Angklung repertoire performed by Japanese July - August 2017

ladies. Miss Chieko Kato from the WIC executive committee was one of the angklung players. A medley of Betawi songs, an Indonesian song and western song was performed by the group. Our guest speaker Ibu Tuty Kusumawati was unable to attend and Pak Deftrianov, head of the sub-division for Development Financing gave us some information about the future of Jakarta. As the event took place during the holy month of Ramadhan, to honour Muslim members and guests the food was served in boxes.

The presentation of Women's Health from Prodia was very impressive.The talk show was about "Menopause" given by Dr. Ferry Darmawan from the University of Indonesia, Dept.of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Faculty of Medicine.

Dr. Siti Halida Zoraida Soraya, from Prodia, daughter of our PP Mrs.Gina Alamsyah, was the moderator. This was then followed with a question and answer session, which was very informative.

Ibu Rina Novasari, about different healthy fruit juices and they had different samples for us to taste.

We were also presented with a short talk

Prodia was very generous in providing snacks and goody bags.

There were 32 ladies who attended.

Our Talent morning on Wednesday June 07, 2017 was successful, and the program went off very well. It would be nice if more circles would participate in the coming years.

Thank you to our circle leader Mrs. Yasuko Morita who has encouraged her students to express themselves, and the content was very informative to all our members.

Handicrafts circle’s Mrs. Helena and Mrs. Lucia successfully displayed all their beautiful knit, crochet and cross stitched products, along with Chieko's Mola art.

1. Currently, I am setting up a meeting with Ways & Means to plan and discuss the details of the promotion for WIC Bazaar of 2017, and am also setting up an appointment with the previous media partner to anticipate the WIC Bazaar of 2017.

2. The pictures of Scholarship Outing, Kazakhstan Cultural Day, GAL Morning, Kartini’s Day, Children’s Day and Benteng Heritage have been uploaded in the social media.

3. The voucher for a stay at the Tentrem Hotel Jogjakarta, from SidoMuncul Group during the Inter Wic Semarang has been drawn and the winner is Ewa Tomczak, our Vice President.

4. The annual contract with the Website administrator has been renewed for this year.

5. Semarang WIC sister club has sent us a package consisting of a coffee table book on Semarang from the Mayor of Semarang and a CD of photos taken during our trip there, recording the memorable 3 day stay.

In August’ 17 we’ll work on the follow up on the media plan to anticipate the 50th Annual Charity Bazaar of WIC. Happy Independence Day for Indonesia, Merdeka! 
