PICKLEBALL PLAYS

H

IN HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE

ot Springs Village is THE place for Pickleball. Even if you haven’t tried this sweet sport with the sour name, you might want to give it a shot on the new courts which are set for completion in 2018. The 12 courts will be built on a cushioned surface, which will be much easier on your hips, backs and knees, according to Ian Tomkins and Greg Allen, who are both members of the HSV Pickleball Club. And the facility will also feature a proshop, trail expansion, lighted courts and more making it the largest Pickleball facility in Arkansas. What exactly is Pickleball, you may ask? Similar to tennis, Pickleball is a fun sport for all ages and all levels of athletic ability. It is played by two or four players on a badminton-size court, with a slightly modified tennis net, using a perforated plastic ball and wood or composite paddles. Experts estimate there are at least three million Pickleball

Step up to the plate and join the Senior Softball League for a fun way to meet others. Open to men 50 years and older and women 35 years and older, the league plays during the Spring and Fall. The league is coed and follows the standard slow pitch and senior safety rules. Take your pick of clay or hard surface playing courts at the 13-court tennis complex. You can also get involved in league play with the Hot Springs Village Tennis Association. Players may choose from programs ranging from league play to fun social events. Play in an organized game or rent a court and practice your swing on your own. Visit HSVTA.net for more information. Bocce Ball, a game of skill and concentration rather than physical stamina is fun and easy to learn. Bocce ball is played on a flat surface (similar to a bowling lane). The object is to get game balls as close as possible to the target ball (pallino). Dust off your athletic gear and head out to adventure!

f you’re looking for the opportunity to exercise while enjoying the beautiful Ouachita region’s scenery, then consider joining the Ageless Bikers Club (ABC) of Hot Springs Village. The group rides on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays throughout the year, weather permitting, in Hot Springs Village and around the region on paved roads. And from April through November, rides also include a monthly trip on the Arkansas River Trail and lunch at Flying Saucers in Little Rock. Scheduled rides are on hilly, paved roads that are quiet with little traffic, according to David Obrien, the

group’s Ride Guide. “I have been with the Club for 5 years now and find the motorists very respectful,” he says, noting most of the members ride road bikes or hybrids because “mountain bikes don’t do well unless your legs are 20 years old or younger.” The group tells new people who want to join that there are “no dues, no fees, no membership requirements, no commitment to show, and no rules,” but be sure to bring your biking helmet or you might hear a lecture about safety. Started about 15 years ago, ABC members developed riding routes that attracted those who were interested in challenging rides as well as people

The clinic where she works also fits her well. “We are just the right size community and family,” says Sutton, noting her colleagues are also friends. But she also enjoys the neighborly connection that Villagers have with each other. Sutton and her husband have three children and live in Benton, though she says she would love to move to Hot Springs Village one day. For now, Sutton is content with the perfect fit she has found practicing medicine in Hot Springs Village.

Security a Priority for HSV Police Department

H

ot Springs Village is a great place to live and work, according to Police Chief Ricky Middleton. And he should know. Chief Middleton has worked in Hot Springs Village for 37 years, serving with the Police Department for 30 years - the past three as Chief. With 18 certified officers, 24-hour dispatch and a 911 answering point, the Police Department works hard to select the “right” candidates for the fully functional department. And as a result, Middleton says his officers are “very professional, courteous, polite and helpful,” in short, one of the “best” police departments in the area. Security is a priority, according to the Chief, who notes “it’s not Mayberry, but our problems are minor,” with lower crime rates compared to other areas. As the largest gated

community in North America, this is no small thing. He says the department works to promote neighborhood watch programs, noting he depends on Villagers involved to be his “eyes and ears,” keeping him informed. For Villagers who want to take a more active role, the Police Department offers the Citizen’s Police Academy. More than 250 people have completed the training. Many of those who have completed the volunteer training have joined the Hot Springs Village Citizen’s Police Academy Alumni Association. The group has raised funds to provide an electronic fingerprinting system, body cameras, portable police radios and more. In addition, the Hot Springs Village Citizen’s Police Academy is hosting “Murder at the Midnight Hour,” an interactive murder mystery dinner fundraiser at the Coronado Community Center March 12. Dinner and show are $25 per person at hsvticketsales.com or by calling 501922-5050.

“Hive” Offers Social and Gastro Experience in HSV

E

xperience a place like no other in Hot Spring Village at the Beehive Neighborhood Hangout. This gastropub offers residents and visitors alike a “social and gastro experience,” says Cindi Erickson, Beehive co-owner and Village resident. Whether you’re looking to catch up with friends over drinks, share some delectable eats, cheer on your favorite team on one of their TVs, including one with an 11-foot screen, or listen to some seriously good live music, the Beehive’s laid-back vibe is the place to be. Located at 220 Minorca Road, Village resident Greg Jones discovered the vacant Beehive Florist shop and imagined it being renovated into a one-of-a-kind social establishment that stays open late, has frequent diverse entertainment, and serves creative and fresh, locally sourced food and libations – all delivered in a southern chic setting. Cindi Erickson, Gordy Lowery, and Greg’s wife, Trisha, embraced the vision and all three are co-owners. The “Hive” is NOT a restaurant or a sport bar. “People shouldn’t come expecting a plated meal,” says Erickson. “Think in terms of sharable plates with a party of friends. You can order as little or as much you want.” And the Beehive is open late, something owners were excited to offer in Hot Springs Village.

18

If you appreciate an upscale active social environment with diverse entertainment, great ambiance and creative food options, check out the “Hive. The Beehive also hosts before and after parties surrounding Village concerts, tournaments and events. Book the Beehive for private parties, meetings, or events during non-operating hours. For more information, go to BeehiveHSV. com or call 501-777-8176.

JV Farms Grows Healthy Animals, Veggies and More

F

or Jay & Valorie Lee, owners of JV Farms, farming is a family thing. The homestead farm, located in Bismarck, was settled by their great-great grandparents back in the 1850’s. They grew up helping their grandparents raise a garden, milk cows, canning and freezing produce and curing and smoking bacons and hams, and more. “Today’s “JV Farms” is a direct re-

flection of all the past generations work and their knowledge handed down to us,” says the couple on their website. “We grow healthy animals, veggies, eggs, and berries, ... the way food was grown before all the fancy marketing words! Eating good is the first step to feeling good, and your knowing your farmer and your food is important to us!” JV Farms is one of a group of local

reshly made pizza and microbrews on tap – that’s why we’re singing the praises of SQZBX (Squeezebox, which is another name for accordion) Brewery and Pizza Joint which is coincidentally located in a piano shop. From the bar made of old piano parts to a rotating menu of microbrews, this family run pizza parlor is all about great food, custom brews and live entertainment! The SQZBX concept is simple, says Zachary Smith, who owns the joint with this wife, Cherla Roorda. “We take simple, fresh ingredients and turn them into delicious food and drink by hand, then serve it with love in a beautiful, comfortable environment. We serve hand-tossed pizza, the biggest salads in town, sandwiches on home-made hoagies, and we brew our own beer and cider right here.” SQZBX is the life and

work of Cheryl and Zachary, who also play tuba and accordion music in the group, The Itinerant Locals. When they bought the SQZBX building ten years ago, it housed the Joe Davis Piano Repair Shop, which was filled with old pianos, organs, and other “treasures.” Now totally gutted and rebuilt, they named the pizza parlor SQZBX as a nod to the music that has been their life’s story. SQZBX opens daily at 11 a.m. and is located at 236 Ouachita Ave., in Hot Springs. For more, go to SQZBX.com or call 501-609-0609.

Visit Buenos Aires for Authentic Argentinian Dishes

I

ndulge your craving for delicious empanadas, grilled delicacies and fabulous deserts with a distinctive Argentinian flavor at Buenos Aires Grill and Cafe in Little Rock’s River Market. The restaurant is located at 614 President Clinton Ave., underneath Little Rock Salsa. The space is a perfect fit, says Flo Bruzatori, Buenos Aires owner and manager. She and her family moved to Sherwood from Argentina, home of Salsa dancing, about 15 years ago. And though Bruzatori is the manager, the restaurant is definitely a family affair. “We want people to feel at home here,” she says, noting that on weekends, the whole family includ-

ing her parents, siblings, husband and kids are usually helping at the restaurant. The empanadas are baked, not fried. They are flaky, tender pockets of deliciousness. And be sure to give the mixed grills a try. There are lots of steak, chicken and vegetarian options. If you are a little more adventurous, sample the Argentinian mixed grill for a true taste of the cultural traditions with sweetbreads and even blood sausage. Whatever you do, save some room for dessert. The fabulous Cuatro Leches cake, which Bruzatori says is her brother Willie’s recipe, cannot be beat. “It’s exciting to share my Argentin-

ian culture with the public and my children,” says Bruzatori. “Visit us at Buenos Aires to experience something different,” says Bruzatori. “Once you do, you will love it.”
