Petit Jean Petit Jean State Park is one of Arkansas’ classic, natural, and historic treasures, and it has been a popular destination for travelers for decades. Named for the legend of Petit Jean, a French girl who disguised herself as a boy and secretly accompanied her explorer sweetheart to the mountain as part of their journey to the New World. The natural beauty and ancient geology of the legendary Petit Jean Mountain inspired the creation of Arkansas’ first state park. There are more than 20 hiking trails in Arkansas that will lead you through Petit Jean's bountiful natural resources. Scenic hiking trails wind their way through forests and meadows, overlooking canyons and streams amid the mountainside. The park offers rustic-style, native log and stone facilities constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) that began in 1933. The focal point of the park, historic Mather Lodge, a 24-room lodge overlooking Cedar Creek Canyon, includes a restaurant, meeting rooms, and gift shop. Near the lodge are 33 cabins (21 with kitchens) located along the bluff offering views of the canyon. Upstream from Cedar Creek, a rock dam forms Lake Bailey, offering 100 acres for fishing, kayaking, and pedal boating. There are 125 park campsites near Lake Bailey. Other options include a group camp area, rally-style area, and four Rent-AYurts. The park also has an airport. There are also two swimming pools, picnic areas, playgrounds, pavilions, a boat launch ramp, tennis and basketball courts, and an amphitheater on site.

Mr. Whiskers Mr. Whiskers has become legendary in the Hot Springs area, and with good reason. Ask anyone who's been to Mr. Whiskers, and they'll tell you the catfish is incredible, the shrimp is fantastic, and the prices are beyond reasonable. The most popular item on the menu is undeniably the catfish basket, which is available in a variety of sizes. There are also oyster, shrimp, and chicken baskets, served with coleslaw, French fries, and hush puppies. Other popular offerings include grilled plates (chicken, catfish, tilapia, and shrimp), po-boys, burgers, ribs, and salads. In 2019, www.travelawaits.com honored Mr. Whiskers as a “must do” when visiting Hot Springs. The restaurant was credited for providing “a dining experience where the food is delicious, the people are friendly, and everyone is treated like family at Sunday’s dinner table.”

The proprietor of Mr. Whiskers, Scott Irwin, made the decision to return home to Hot Springs, Arkansas, after owning other successful restaurants around the country. Irwin says the goal of Mr. Whiskers is to “focus on keeping customers coming back time and time again.” 4195 Malvern Ave, Hot Springs, AR 71901 501-262-3474 GreatCatfish.com

Kraemer Wisconsin Cheese In the small Wisconsin community of Watertown, circa 1920s, Tony Kraemer, a lifelong farmer, decided to build a small dairy business on his property. He probably never envisioned that three generations later, his family would still be carrying on the tradition of making fine dairy products. The Kraemer family makes its own cheese spreads (13 varieties in all) in small, 40-pound batches to ensure quality, flavor, and freshness. In addition, Kraemer Wisconsin Cheese sells featured sausages, homemade fudge, gift boxes, and party trays. While vacationing in Hot Springs, Arkansas, recently, the Kraemer family fell in love with the area. Jim Kraemer said his family “loved it so much we’ve decided to open up a second retail location in Hot Springs Village.” Kraemer recently broke ground and anticipates that construction will be complete by fall 2020, just in time for the holiday season. 4918 N State Hwy 7, Hot Springs Village, AR 71909

The Pantry West and The Pantry Crest

The Pantry West, opened in west Little Rock in 2009, serves Czech and German classics, plus delightful appetizers, burgers, salads, and flatbreads. Never one to rest on success, owner Tomas Bohm opened The Pantry Crest in the historic Hillcrest neighborhood of Little Rock in 2014. The menu features their legendary “Better for You Wings,” available bone in, naked, or bone-in breaded cooked low and slow over hickory wood. Appetizers include the Peaks Sampler (fried pickles, buffalo tenders, and mozzarella bites), and Billionaire’s Bacon (robust and flavorful thick-cut bacon seasoned with brown sugar, red chili flakes, and smoked paprika.) Among the delicious entrée offerings are Mom's pot roast, chicken and shrimp combo, chargrilled salmon, and sweet and smoky ribs. The impressive selection of burgers includes The Hangover with a fried egg and bacon, and a plant-based burger named the Beyond. Nothing sets Twin Peaks apart more than their signature 29° draft beer. Served in perfectly-frosted, 22-oz man-size mugs, the selection of in-house brews is a fan favorite! Waitress and bartender Maddy, one of the engaging Twin Peaks’ girls, says she and her coworkers always have a smile ready for their customers and aim to make them feel very welcome.” 10 Shackleford Drive, Little Rock, AR 72211 501-224-1729 TwinPeaksRestaurant.com
