Tarrant County was established August 26, 1850 with a population of 599 whites and 65 slaves. By 1855 the slave population had grown to 280. By the end of the Civil War there were over 200,000 slaves in Texas, and a sizable number here in North Central Texas. Fort Worth met enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation and General Order #3 issued by General Gordon Granger, who was given command over Texas, with much resistance until it was financially prohibitive. Although Fort Worth didn’t get the news on June 19th that first year, many who traveled north brought with them the need to celebrate the occasion.
