Rego Park Library Signage Style Guide Typography Primary Fonts FUTURA Futura is an exceptionally versatile typeface. Its bold and condensed variants are especially powerful display designs. Futura is also a good choice for space-sensitive environments. Its simple letterforms allow it to be set at surprisingly small sizes with little drop in legibility levels. Futura also works well for short blocks of text copy, captions and pull-quotes. This font was also a recom FUTURA MEDIUM

mended font by the Americans for Disabilities Act (ADA) guidlines, based on its legibility and readbility. The medium version and condensed extra bold version or a combination of the two should be used for all signage. Font sizes for all signage should be at least 5/8 of an inch or large enough to be legible and readable to patrons inside the library. FUTURA CONDENSED EXTRA BOLD

Pictograms & Messaging Pictograms will supplement messaging and should be appropriate to the subject matter, easy to comprehend at a glance, and visible from afar. Pictograms are ideal for signage because they are universally acknolwedged and neutral in form and outline; users can interpret the meaning in the context of their own situation. In general use, they should be used in tandem with words. Colors of pictograms should be white, black, or match a
designation as layed out in the following section. Messaging should be friendly in tone, avoid all-caps, underlining, or excessive use of exclamation points. The tone should be firm and clear, but when possible, some humor or whimsy will help to get the message across without detracting from the experience of using the library. No ‘X’ symbols or “no symbols” should be used.
