Your entire look is key when it comes to getting ready for prom. There are so many things to think about. Hair, the dress, and you’ll need to work out which makeup looks goes with all that. There are a few looks that you might want to consider. These glamorously beautiful makeup tips for prom are not only beautiful, but easy to D.I.Y. When doing any makeup eyeshadow in general, you always want to coordinate the color of your shadow, with the colors of your attire. In most cases the undertone of your dress, should be the color you want to go for. For example, say you decide to wear a grey, shimmering dress. Eyeshadow colors that look good with shimmery grey tend to be medium to dark shades of blue, or a neutral cut crease with some silver glitter as the top coat.

Cut crease eyeshadow has been a prom makeup trend for some time now. This look is very elegant and surprisingly easy to do. After applying foundation and primer, apply a nude shade all over the eye first and follow with a darker nude or pink along the eye socket. This color difference will make your eyelid more noticeable creating a blended cut crease.

When applying makeup on your lips you, as well, want to coordinate these shades. Lips tend to be the easiest to match up. Heavy eye makeup and dark lipstick can look clownish. If you want to wear red lipstick, you should keep the rest of your makeup light. The best lipstick shade is a shade or two darker than your natural lip color.

When it comes to prom girls always try to look their best. Remember, these are just a few easy makeup tips. If you want more there are plenty of tutorials, articles, and tips online.

Socializing and connecting with others can motivate positive thoughts, feelings and actions that can help you thrive. Spending time alone and socializing both have value when they balance each other out therefore I believe it would be most helpful for you to find a good balance between your time alone and socializing rather than focusing on just doing one over the other. If you want to look further into studies of human interaction, I would suggest looking at studies done by Mathew Lieberman. I hope this is helpful. Good luck.

Of course, yay!

What do you love most about yourself?

That is a good question. I love myself most because I am very creative and I have good writing skills, helping me in my job as a sports reporter. Shout out to Guam Sports Network!

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

In 10 years, I see myself as a professional sports reporter for a big media company and making copious amounts of money. I also see myself with a nice, sweet, caring wife who loves me for who I am.

What is the best thing about being a Panther?

The best thing about being a Panther is probably all of the classes that help me in my climb to my goals. Also, a majority of the students are fellow military kids such as myself, so they understand what it’s like to constantly move all over the world. Another thing I enjoy about my school is maybe being able to be in amazing classes such as journalism (Mrs. Sablan is a great teacher, so shout out to her, too) plus we have a live broadcast every morning which I am part of.

And most of all, the view from my school is amazing! In the back we’ve got the mountains and the other way we have the pleasant view of Tumon bay and Hagatna! Being a Panther is great!

What do you love most about yourself?

My work ethic and determination. I put the highest demands on myself and never try to settle for less.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

I plan to become a firefighter in the military.

I also would like to try and give back to the community and future generations by sharing my knowledge with them and try to influence their lives in a positive way.

What is the best thing about being a Titan?

It’s where I started from. If it weren’t for the education, teachers, staff, and the students; I wouldn’t have become the person I am today.

It’s a BIG yay, personally. Prom is a very special moment in someone’s high school career. It’s a moment to have a great night with all your friends and dance around without a care in the world. Prom only comes once in a lifetime, might as well take advantage of it before we graduate and move on with our lives.

What do you love most about yourself?

A quirky personality, dancing, and my determination is what I love the most about myself. I do my best to brighten up the day of every person who come across me, and I put myself at no limits when it comes to the people I love.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

I see myself excelling in the fashion industry and running a dance studio for those who love it as much as I do.

What is the best thing about being an Islander?

The best thing about being an Islander is our education system. As Islanders, we’re strived to great heights with our grades. Considering the fact that our staff is highly educated, students are put onto expectations beyond our limit, but it’s a great push. You can tell that the staff truly does care about our careers after high school. Being at JFK gives an opportunity for a great education.

The best thing would be the spirit.

Yay! Since this is my last year in high school, of course I’d want to attend. I’d like to end my senior year with as much memories, with my friends, before we head off to achieve our dreams.

What do you love most about yourself?

What I love most about myself.. I would have to say my determination. The past two years of high school have been very tough and stressful. Assignment after project after test/ quiz, along with extracurricular activities, can be draining as a teenager - especially when you want to have fun! However, no matter the abundant workload and griping given, I know I can do it; and that’s all because of the constant support I receive from my friends and family.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

In all honesty, I’d love to see myself as happy and successful. Currently, I’m not too sure what I want to pursue since there’s so many areas I have yet to discover... Though, for sure, I’d probably still be in school, pursuing a higher education, assisting my family financially, and perhaps even traveling!

What is the best thing about being a Shark?

The best thing about being a Shark, is being a Shark itself! We may not have the best facility and have enough resources, but we, Sharks, make the best out of it! Though our mascot may be frightening, it’s actually quite the opposite for us, students; we’re really friendly people. Because of our friendliness, you can say we greatly welcome diversity. No matter what clique you enter in, those people will most likely give the warmest greetings.

Yay. Prom is a great way to get together with classmates and learn more about your peers as graduation approaches. Prom doesn’t have to involve a date but rather it’s an opportunity share stories, laughter, friendship.

What do you love most about yourself?

A good quality about myself is that I am very ambitious and hardworking.

If I set my mind to achieving something, then I persistently put all my effort into achieving that goal. I am also grateful that I am able to prioritizes friends, family, and values in the face of obstacles.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

In ten years, I see myself serving our beautiful island of Guam while studying towards my dream career of becoming a medical doctor. In conjunction with my career, I aim to work with my peers to cultivate and implement creative and beneficial ideas in our community.

What is the best thing about being a Knight?

The best thing about being a knight is the competitive yet friendly atmosphere. The small class sizes allow for intimate connections with friends and teachers. The students are extremely hardworking and willing to go out of their way to help a classmate, while the teachers are encouraging and supporting to bring out the best in each student. Although we have a rigorous course load, each task allows us to develop not just our knowledge, but also learn applicable skills we can use in everyday life.

Definitely the Bulldog Spirit and our ability to support one another and unite as a family.

It’s definitely a YAY! --- I think everyone should experience prom at least once in their life because it’s a chance to live that “fairytale dream.”

What do you love most about yourself?

The thing I love most about myself is that I have big aspirations and the drive to make those goals a reality.

I see myself happily married with 3 kids living abroad. I will be done with my masters for business management and will be starting my clothing line. I also see myself becoming a public figure and traveling all around the world to experience new things.

What is the best thing about being a Warrior?

The best thing about being a Warrior is the environment. Our school is very family oriented between the students, faculty, and staff. We keep God at the center of everything, which helps us grow and strive to better ourselves as people. Also, our school is amazing when it comes to sports and it helps boost up our school spirit. Once a Warrior, Always a Warrior!

Count your blessings, not your problems.

If you have traveled along Guam’s roads- which is most likely a majority of us if not everyone- you may have noticed something on the entrance of driveways for the 76/Circle K gas stations. Yes, I am talking about the signs that list fuel prices. Not only are you hit in the face with insanely expensive gasoline costs, but you also notice words. More specifically, words of inspiration and wisdom. Almost everyday I pass by these inspirational signs, and I think to myself “Jeez, now that’s a deep quote.” I always take a few minutes to think about them and what they mean. I feel as if they give everyone a feeling of emotion and a little bit of inspiration every day, which is a good thing. Hats off to 76/Circle K for this amazing feat. I’ve been on this world 18 years and no other convenience store I have ever seen in my life has been as inspirational as they are.

Wise people take advice.

This quote encourages me to focus on the good, not the bad. I often find myself thinking, “What if?” When I dwell on the past and all the things that could have been, it becomes easy for me to miss out on all the good things happening right in front of me. Focusing solely on the problems you have could result in missing out on a lot of blessings that come your way. This really made me realize how much I should be thankful for the things I have and not to overlook them so easily.

To be wise is to listen to the advice of others instead of trying to figure things out on our own. We often think that we know best, or we simply do not like the advice being given to us. After reading this quote, I realized that being wise is not only about being knowledgeable, but also knowing when to seek and ask for help. Instead of trying to forget our mistakes, we need to admit them and turn them into learning experiences. We also need to learn how to take constructive criticism and use it to better ourselves and our work. We can learn from the events happening around us, even from something as simple as a gas station sign.

When I saw this quote I immediately thought of all the people who have accomplished the impossible. That’s what this quote is referring to: the impossible. However not everything is impossible. We human beings are amazing creatures. To understand the things that we understand really make us the intellectual animals that we are and what sorts us out from the rest. For example: our trip to the moon. People for years studied and observed the sky. Graphed the stars and dreamed of touching the clouds. When the first airplane was invented in the early 1900s we got our first taste of flight but it wasn’t enough. We wanted more. However it was assumed “impossible”...or so we thought. In 1961 the first man on the moon shattered these thoughts and reaching for the stars became a reality. So whenever you think something might be impossible, dream and work hard to reach for your stars.

At first glance, the image of self-love is seemingly painted in flitter and warm sunshine. It’s an appealing concept -- pampering oneself amongst glowing candles, a full eight hours of sleep, self-help books read with toes in the sand by the ocean; a romantic reverie that promises comfort and contentment. But in my experience, selflove is a lot messier, a lot more awkward, a lot tougher than this shallow snapshot that is so alluring via inspiring quotes on Pinterest. Self-love is not a frame of mind that is picked up instantly; it is not a natural disposition for most. It takes a lot of time, effort, tears, and energy. It takes practice. I have found that the most practical way to make self-love a priority is to incorporate specific habits into your daily routine. It requires consistency and an annoying amount of self-discipline to make a difference in your relationship with yourself.

Here are seven ways that you can love yourself all seven days of the week.

SLEEP WELL. “Try to learn to breathe deeply, really to taste food when you eat, and when you sleep really to sleep.” -- Ernest Hemingway. Sleep is an essential part of self-care that so many of us tend to neglect or undervalue. Good sleep hygiene (no electronics in bed, a consistent nighttime routine, no caffeine at night, a dark room, etc.) ensures that you wake up every morning as your best self, ready to take on the day and practice self-love. Make your nighttime routine a time to hyper-focus on self-love. Take a long shower, put on a comfy IKEA robe, brew some herbal tea, read a good book, journal. Ease your mind. Reward yourself for making it through another day.

EAT WELL. Eat things that make you feel good. For me, that means avoiding dairy (#lactoseintolerantclub), trading potato chips for kale chips, and ordering Sweet-

green instead of Domino’s. Recently I’ve concluded that the instant gratification of gooey mac and cheese is not worth the tummy pain and crummy mood that follows. It takes some maturity and self-control to avoid the foods that don’t do your body good, but I promise you it improves your quality of life. Another tip that seems like a no-brainer, but is still worth noting: make sure to eat. Depression, anxiety, a history of disordered eating, and overworking yourself can all lead to neglecting the proper nourishment that your body needs. Try to plan meals and go grocery shopping at the beginning of the week so that it doesn’t take a lot of effort to feed yourself on the days when it’s hard to get out of bed or pull yourself away from your desk. Lastly, stay hydrated! Buy a cute water bottle. Download an app that helps you track how many ounces you’ve had a day. Make it fun.

CHALLENGE NEGATIVE THOUGHT PROCESSES. Every day, we experience a range of emoti9ons prompted by both internal and external influences. As cliché as it is, keep in mind that “feelings are indicators, not dictators” (Lysa TerKeurst). When you experience a negative feeling, challenge it. Ask yourself, “Why do I feel this way?” “Does it benefit me in any way to feel like this?” Try to step outside yourself and view the thought process from an objective position.

If you’re angry with or hurt by someone, try to see it from their point of view. If you’re criticizing yourself harshly, try to see yourself from the perspective of a loved one. Remind yourself of your successes rather than focusing on your failures. “I failed. I suck. I’ll never be who I want to be.” turns into, “Experiencing failure means that I tried. And trying is an admirable, positive thing. I will get back up and try again. I will do better next time.” Don’t let yourself get stuck in pessimism. Work hard every day to shift your perspective from one of negativity positivity.

POSITIVE AFFIRMATIONS. I’ve written about this in a previous issue. It’s such a simple and effective way to shift how you view yourself. It’s important to appreciate all the good things about yourself and to have faith in yourself. There are so many different affirmations that you can adopt. My favorites are, “I am a force.” “My beauty is unique.” “I am growing stronger through every obstacle.” I have survived 100% of my worst days.” “I choose to radiate positive energy.”

I have a journal called The Five-Minute Journal that prompts you to write your affirmations daily. Getting them down on paper is a powerful way to begin your day on a positive note. It sets the tone for intentional consciousness.

HAVE AN OUTLET. Find a way to relieve stress and release negative energy. Make it part of your routine.

There are so many types of outlets to choose from -- art, journaling, exercise, etc. Yoga is one of my top forms of self-love. It makes me feel so accomplished, refreshed, and energized. Yoga With Adriene on Youtube is a fantastic instructor, whose slogan is perfect for self-love: “find what feels good.” She has several 30-day challenges that will help you get into the habit of loving yourself through regularly practicing yoga.

Journaling and poetry are also a beautiful way to sort through any confusing or burdensome emotions that are weighing on my soul. Almost every therapist that I’ve seen has recommended writing as an emotional outlet. Love yourself by learning how to let go.

GET OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZOME. That is the less romantic part of self-love that is much harder than drawing a bubble bath and putting on a facemask. Getting out of your comfort zone weekly, if not daily, is an important part of your personal growth, and personal growth is an important part of self-love!

Having successful experiences outside of your comfort zone builds confidence. You get to prove to yourself that you are capable of more than you realized.

And having confidence makes self-love a whole lot easier to practice.

PRIORITIZE YOUR HAPPINESS. Sometimes we forget that life is meant to be enjoyed and not just something to suffer through. That’s probably because life is full of hurdles and pain and messiness, but that shouldn’t be what consumes us. Make a point to love yourself by doing things that make you happy every single day. Make your daily life something that inspires, excites, and soothes you. Keep your pantry stocked with your favorite foods. Spend more time outside. Schedule time each week for quality time with friends. Take more photographs. Stop hating on Mondays. Listen to more music. Make more art. If you love and live near the beach, go to the damn beach.

Stop waiting for happiness to find you; chase it with all you’ve got.

Self-love is demanding--to alter the view of and relationship with yourself that is cemented by years of self-neglect, or even self-hatred, involves repeatedly waking up each day and resolving to take care of yourself, no matter how tempting it is to hide under the duvet and whisper, “I’ll try again tomorrow.” Because, the truth is, Gotye was spot-on when he wrote the lyric, “You can be addicted to a certain kind of sadness.” Sadness is natural. Inacti9on is easy. It takes no effort. It’s familiar. It’s safe. A lot of us fear even attempting self-love because of the potential failure.

You can’t experience the discomfort and disappointment of falling if you don’t ever get up, so you don’t even try. But you have to try. Get up every morning, and just try. After all, self-love is a verb.

A

s a teen, it’s the perfect time to venture out and start discovering your true self. An important matter that is listed at the top of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is self discovery, and it is an ongoing journey for a time of figuring or realizing who you are.

Self discovery is important because if you don’t know who you are and what you value, it’ll reflect on the decisions you make, forming a life you may not be satisfied with. Because this process involves taking risks to challenge yourself to grow as a person, there will be moments of confusion, fear, and indecisiveness. It all starts by eagerly wanting to grow and improve your well-being.

I started out confused and a bit unsteady a few years back because the people I hung out with and the decisions I made when I was with them resulted in negativity. At that time, I followed their path, basically worshipping societal expectations and ethics, ignoring my gut feeling-- this wasn’t who I am and want to be, therefore feeling offbeat, unsure, and unhappy with myself. I eagerly wanted change, so I turned to my family and they had guided me into valuing education and reflecting human decency. Later on, because I was myself, I received opportunities like meeting friends, who taught me to let go, live a little and allow myself to feel free, or joining activities that unleashed creativity and expression. I was inspired from that moment onward to continue to achieve in and out of school, with the support of my good friends and my family. Although there’s a long way to go, since I established my values, knowing who I am and what I want, I’m able to make decisions with no doubt, designing the life I want to live.

It is important to acknowledge your thoughts and feelings. Give it time and attention, and you will realize what you truly want and need to form a healthy habit of providing your emotional, mental, psychological needs. Realizing you aren’t in a hap-

Explore and start saying yes. Seek opportunities,for it is a chance of an advancement for success. Trying new things, may unleash a strength, which could build your character into becoming empowersome

Know your goals, whether it’d be simple or complex, and try to achieve them. Always try to shape the path to where you want to be later on. There will be days where you are confused, but knowing your calling and listening to it is all you need to get back up and try again. “...something that is difficult to ignore… a transcendent feeling-- that is, literally feeling that you have been called to your vocation. It is an inspiration that grabs hold of you and leads you where you are meant to go. A calling is not a goal that we create and control. Instead, it is a teacher that we listen to and follow if we have the courage and the desire to reach out highest aspirations.” -The Mountain Within Realizing you have improved the slightest bit is the path to happiness and contentment. Again, this is an ongoing journey-- an endless one full of challenges that have different processes and levels. The journey makes our lives, nothing but interesting and worth living.

Yes, the question above is quite personal, but it’s one that has to be asked and has to be answered truthfully.

As society has been changing, there is no doubt we live in a world where the high school environment seems like the end of High School Musical.

This means that the status quo has changed and no one has a specific clique. We can talk to whoever we want, date whoever we want, and hang out with whoever we want.

This change in perspective has allowed students to go outside of their comfort zone. But, there is still one factor that holds us back and that factor is self-love.

Self discovery through drama Jasmine Gatdula, Junior George Washington H.S.

Did you know that public speaking is the number one fear in America? Well, in Speech and Drama, you will eventually get over the appalling trepidation and break out of that shell that wasn’t supposed to be there in the first place. Yes, I know it is hard, but challenges are always fun. Pushing yourself to your limits and finding the real person inside of you is the best feeling in the world. Knowing that you could

perform back to back, in front of 30 plus students is basically a significant “win” in life!

Mrs. Quichocho’s 6th and 7th block performed Christmas Disney-inspired plays such as Frozen and The Grinch Who Stole Christmas. Students, family, and visitors genuinely enjoyed the played and wished to come back for more! Both plays received a significant amount of standing ovations, especially from the Freshmen Academy.

We hope to bring light to our class and to students who want to pursue acting in the future.

For me as a student, I wish to inspire those who aren’t confident enough to be on that stage and strut whatever they got up their sleeves. I realized that even the quietest person in class could get the main character and basically live the character on stage. That person was me, Jasmine Gatdula. I thank Mrs. Q for giving me that part because being in speech and drama perceived my thoughts on myself.

No one would’ve thought that shy girl would become Elsa in the Frozen play! Many students personally came up to me and congratulated or complimented my acting skills. You know, that feeling of being noticed just sought solace into my heart, mind, and view on acting.

Another Drama student, Terrence Ogo, inputs that Speech and Drama allows you to be whoever you want to be and it opens the doors to becoming a more confident person. In this class, we band

together as a collective for on cause, and in doing so we become a family. He himself was a shy student, but his acting skills say otherwise. He was the Grinch and played that role as if he really was one.

Grumpy with the scratchy voice, made students laugh and drew them more into the play. His rapping skills are sp superb to the point where everyone in the classroom bobbed their head up and down.

Some of the best parts in drama class are the contribution of ideas on costumes, finding characters, and buying the scripts for our play.

What our Drama students love is when we each go up, one by one, auditioning for our characters. Yes, it’s nerve wracking, but you have to see if that part is really for you. The cool thing though is that a student directs the play! As you can tell by past two plays, which was prodigious to the max, well directed by two astounding students: Ethan

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY Tips for beginners

1. Don’t go crazy buying the most expensive equipment right away.

It’s possible to get very nice photos with an inexpensive point and shoot. See these examples on Flickr. The more photos you take, the more you’ll know about what kind of camera to get when it’s time to upgrade.

2. Consider a tripod.

On the other hand, an inexpensive tripod is worth getting, especially if you have shaky hands like mine. When I got a tripod, my satisfaction with my shots skyrocketed. For even more stability, use your camera’s timer function with a tripod (read our introduction to tripods).

3. Keep your camera with you all the time.

Photo ops often come when you least expect it. If you can keep your equipment relatively simple – just a small camera bag and a tripod – you might be able to take advantage of some of those unexpected opportunities. Or, if your phone has a camera, use it to take “notes” on scenes you’d like to return to with your regular camera.

4. Make a list of shots you’d like to get.

For those times you can’t carry your camera around, keep a small notebook to jot down places you’d like to come back and photograph. Make sure to note any important details, like the lighting, so you can come back at the same time of day or when the weather’s right. If you don’t want to carry a notebook, send yourself an email using your cell phone with Jott.com.

5. Don’t overlook mundane subjects for photography.

You might not see anything interesting to photograph in your living room or your backyard, but try looking at familiar surroundings with fresh eyes. You might catch an interesting trick of the light or find some unexpected wildflowers in your yard. Often a simple subject makes the best shot.

6. Enjoy the learning process.

The best part of having a hobby like photography is never running out of things to learn. Inspiration is all around you. Look at everything with the eyes of a photographer and you’ll see opportunities you never noticed before.

7. Take advantage of free resources to learn.

Browse through Flickr or websites like the GIMP a try.

8. Experiment with your camera’s settings.

Your point and shoot may be more flexible and powerful than you know. Read the manual for help deciphering all those little symbols. As you explore, try shooting your subjects with multiple settings to learn what effects you like. When you’re looking at your photos on a computer, you can check the EXIF data (usually in the file’s properties) to recall the settings you used.

9. Learn the basic rules.

The amount of information about photography online can be overwhelming.

Start with a few articles on composition.

Be open to what more experienced photographers have to say about technique.

You have to know the rules before you can break them.

10. Take photos regularly.

Try to photograph something every day. If you can’t do that, make sure you take time to practice regularly, so you don’t forget what you’ve learned. An excellent way to motivate yourself is by doing the weekly assignments in the DPS Forum.

11. Don’t be afraid to experiment.

If you’re using a digital camera, the cost of errors is free. Go crazy – you might end up with something you like. You’ll certainly learn a lot in the process.
