from the publisher Welcome to the March issue. I enjoy local magazines that promote local businesses. As the new publisher of Iredell Living Magazine, we will continue to feature businesses each month on our covers, while switching things up a bit in the magazine. In the last few months, we have started implementing themes, with this month’s being our home design issue. Spring begins on the 20th, and warmer weather is just around the corner, so March is a great time to start making improvements to your home. This month’s issue should prove to be a good resource for you with informative articles to help you with your home projects this spring. On March 10th don’t forget to move your clocks up an hour as we enter into daylight savings time and wear a little green on the 17th in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. As the days grow warmer, I hope you take some time to get outside and enjoy the weather and all the scenery that spring offers. Until next month, thank you for reading the March issue of Iredell Living Magazine. Enjoy!

o t n i g n i r p S Home Improvement By Kathy Wheeler

I

don’t know about you, but I am so ready for spring! The cold winter weather had me hibernating most of the season and gave me plenty of opportunity to take note of the space I live in. I had loads of time to contemplate my spring project list. As irony would have it, just when I thought my list and plans were complete, I started pulling together our home design theme for the March issue of Iredell Living. As I read through the articles and spoke with advertisers, my to-do-list kept growing! Luckily for me, I know who I can hire to get the work done. The magazine is full of design professionals this month who can knock more than a few items off my list! Spring is right around the corner and with it comes warmer days and an inspiration to do something new and fresh. While it’s still too cold to plant flowers or start outdoor projects, spring cleaning

IREDELL LIVING • MARCH 2019

is the most cost effective project you can tackle. Getting rid of items that you no longer use frees up much needed space for organizing the treasures you keep. Donating what you no longer need or want makes this project even sweeter. Cleaning windows, baseboards, cabinets, and scuff marks on walls can make things feel new again. After a good cleaning, the renovation projects will be obvious. Once you have purged all the items you can live without, if you are still busting at the seams with stuff you have no place to put, you may decide it’s time to move. Whether you plan to build a new custom home or find one on the market that better suits your needs, selling your home will go hand-in-hand with buying a new one. According to Zillow, homes listed in early spring typically sell the fastest, so March is the month to get on it!

Improving your curb appeal, decluttering, replacing outdated décor, and remodeling your kitchen or bathrooms may be just the thing you need to fall in love with your home all over again. Or, that effort can go a long way in helping you sell it. You will find articles and resources in this issue that can help the do-it-yourselfer make improvements, and professionals for those jobs out of your skill set. Our home is more than a place to lay our heads. It houses our memories, it’s where we entertain our friends and family, and it’s our headquarters for planning and living our lives. So, keep on reading! You’ll likely find an article or two that inspires you to make your home all you want it to be.

Your Smile

is the Door to Your Heart

By Kristie Darling | Photos by Christian Viera Photography

“It’s true that your smile is the most important thing you wear,” Lindsay Spears shared. “It breaks my heart when someone isn’t as fun-loving as they could be because they’re ashamed about their teeth.” Dr. Spears is the driving force behind one of the most beloved dentistry teams around. “It’s important to me that people understand we’re just seven Christian women who care. We don’t judge. In fact, if everyone had perfect teeth, I wouldn’t have a job!” I met with Dr. Spears and the Carolina Crossroads team, and I must say, each of these delightful women comes to their work with compassion, humor, and grace. And, they know their stuff! CARING FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY “We are people-people. Little ones become teenagers and twenty-somethings,

and we’ve been teaching them how to take care of their teeth all their lives,” hygienist Kim Elliott said. “With the youngest—it’s recommended that children see a dentist when their first teeth are coming in—getting them to feel safe and comfortable here is helping them know us, and us getting to know them so we wouldn’t be strangers if they had to come in for an emergency. We make certain they know what’s going on and ask questions. We help parents understand the importance of regular dental care for everyone, especially children… we teach kids and their parents.” Carolina Crossroads Dental Care’s office is a comfortable place. Make a cup of coffee or tea, watch a little TV, and sit back for a moment. “I feel welcomed, relaxed, not rushed or left waiting,” a recent

patient said, “It’s like hanging out with friends—laid-back professionals!” The sunny offices have been up-fitted with new equipment and remodeled to make your visit pleasant and comfortable. “We’re starting to use new air powder polishers that remove stains better and get teeth really clean,” hygienist Allison Carter explained, “a great addition with whitening treatments.” Dr. Spears’ dentistry includes most any service you might need, and she’ll refer you to a specialist when necessary. AFFORDABLE CARE There are several options for affordable dental care. With our in-house insurance, Miles of Smiles, patients can prepay at a reduced price for two exams, two cleanings, a set of digital X-rays, and one IREDELL LIVING • MARCH 2019

emergency visit each year along with a 20% discount on other services. “This makes a big difference for some families to get dental care or not,” Dr. Spears explained. “We work with dental insurance plans and have new patient and referral offers. Just call, we’ll explain how you can afford personalized care.”

IREDELL LIVING • MARCH 2019

THE TEAM “I love my dream team. They keep me going, and we have a blast together,” Dr. Spears says. “Last October, all seven of us went to the American Dental Association’s annual meeting…continuing education each year is critical. We were excited to hear, in addition to learning about new dental technologies and products, workshops about women in dentistry, teambuilding, social media, and wellness—this isn’t your grandmother’s dentistry! I learn so much from new people we meet, and the best part was having my team there to learn with me. It was in Honolulu, so we relied on Tammy to show us around during our trip. Just being with each other is special!”

Tammy Waiwaiole, who was in charge of free time in Hawaii, is from Hawaii. After settling in Statesville, she worked for Dr. Rudy Ketchie for 31 years. When Dr. Ketchie sold his practice to Dr. Spears in 2015, Tammy stayed on. As office manager, Tammy is one of the friendly voices on the phone when you call. She knows all the patients, many all their lives. “I’ve been here long enough that I’m friends with some patients and their families. And, I love working with these women every day,” she said. “We get along like sisters—that makes it easy to come to work.” Kim Elliott has been with the practice for 22 years. She and long-time hygienist Allison Carter—20 years—are the specialists who not only clean and floss your teeth twice a year, they are the front line in teaching good dental hygiene and how to take care of your teeth and gums between visits. They are x-ray technicians, they keep up with your treatment plan and records, and they’re fun to hang with. Even at the dentist’s office! Kim said, “We can transform smiles, and

Gina Wilmoth started last August as the team’s third assistant. (Photos courtesy of Dr. Spears) Dr. Spears! I love that! Lives are changed.…a great smile is something worth working on.” Dental assistant Lori Walton has worked with the practice for 14 years. She understands that for some people, the dentist’s office is the last place they want to be, so she makes sure her patients understand what’s going on. “Questions are free,” she says, “and I encourage everyone to ask about anything they’re concerned with.” Michelle Hix told me that all the friends she’s ever had come to Carolina Crossroad; well maybe almost all. “We’re approachable. We have a good time with our patients,” Michelle said. “I think the atmosphere here really is special and people feel that.” Michelle has been a dental assistant with the practice for nine years. She and her husband, Matthew, have two children—all patients, of course.

Lindsay Spears is a powerhouse. You see it in her work, in her personality, and in the commitment she has to each patient. It’s reflected in the dedication of her team. Lindsay pays attention and listens to what’s going on with patients and gives her best recommendations for the dental work that’s needed. “I believe in choices…I approach dentistry conservatively, which is to say, I want the very best for my patients without getting into work that isn’t needed. The most expensive option isn’t always the best decision. I listen so that together we come to a treatment plan that works, that I know they’ll be pleased with,” she said. “It’s important to me that my work makes their lives better.” Dr. Spears and her husband, Brandon, are planning a move to Statesville. “Troutman is close, but I want to be closer to work,” she told me. “With two little

ones, that will be much better!” Ella Rose is almost three, and she loves to dress up like a princess and play outside. Eli just turned one, and like every dentist’s child, he’s always chewing on things—everything! He loves watching his big sister. GIVING BACK As a sponsor of Girls on the Run, Dr. Spears shares herself and her team with others. “We participated in GOTR’s Sneaker Soiree. At the auction, I purchased a two-night stay in Asheville, and all seven of us are going there for teambuilding,” she said. “The better we all get along, the better our patients feel.” Gina and Dr. Spears are participating in the Carolina Panther’s Team Smile day to provide free dentistry for those who need it. Caring about the community is essential to all the women at Carolina Crossroads. Lindsay Spears and her topnotch team provide personalized, affordable dental care for thousands of families. Call today to have your questions answered or to make an appointment. Your smile will thank you!

What's Cooking?! Pasta and Chicken in Garlic Cream Sauce

Warm meals that come together quickly are a necessity for busy families, especially on weeknights filled with homework, practices, meetings and more. Serving up comfort foods that require less time in the kitchen make for more moments spent together at the table. This rich and creamy, one-dish dinner requires less than 45 minutes of kitchen duty.

Pasta and Chicken in Garlic Cream Sauce Recipe courtesy of Milk Means More Prep time: 20 minutes Cook time: 10 minutes Servings: 8

slices bacon, cut crosswise into 1/2-inch-wide pieces ¾ pound boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into 3/4inch pieces 10 ounces (about 4 cups) farfalle (bow tie) pasta 2 ½ cups reduced-sodium chicken broth 4 cloves garlic, minced 1 ½ teaspoons dried Italian seasoning ½ teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper 1 cup heavy cream 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese 3 cups baby spinach leaves 1 cup halved cherry tomatoes, for garnish Directions Place removable pan inside programmable pressure cooker.

Using saute function, cook bacon, uncovered, until crisp. Use slotted spoon to remove bacon from pan. Drain bacon on paper towels. Leave 1 tablespoon drippings in pan; discard remaining. Add chicken to bacon drippings in pan in two batches. Using saute function, stir-fry chicken 2-3 minutes, or until cooked through. Use slotted spoon to remove chicken from pan. Repeat until all chicken is cooked. Press cancel. Stir pasta, broth, garlic, Italian seasoning and pepper into drippings in pan. Secure lid and set pressure release to sealing function. Select high pressure setting and cook 5 minutes. Press cancel.

Allow pressure to release naturally for 5 minutes. Move pressure release to venting function to release any remaining steam. Remove lid. Stir cream into pasta mixture. Using saute function, cook and stir, uncovered, until boiling. Boil, uncovered, about 4 minutes, or until sauce generously coats pasta, stirring frequently. Press cancel. Stir in chicken and Parmesan cheese. Place spinach and bacon in large bowl. Pour pasta mixture over top. Toss until combined. Ladle into serving bowls. Top each serving with tomatoes. The Natural Beginnings Birth and Wellness Center empowers women to have a natural birth experience. Midwives care for patients during pregnancy and birth, either in the birth center, which has recently added three new private birthing suites or nearby at Davis Regional Medical Center. They also added a family 18

waiting area that doubles as a setting for educational classes. Owners Marcia Ensminger, MSN, CNM and Nicole Winecoff, MSN, CNM got to know each other several years ago when they worked together as labor and delivery nurses. Marcia became a certi-

fied midwife in 2005 and Nicole in 2011. Natural Beginnings opened in 2011. At that time, they were the second of only two birth centers in North Carolina. Recently, they have added two more midwives, Tiffany Thompson, CNM and Jennifer Johnson, CNM, WHNP. Patients can choose whether to deliver at the birth center or at Davis Regional Medical Center, where the midwives have hospital privileges. The midwives provide waterbirth deliveries for low risk patients at either facility. Should an emergency occur at the birth center or a patient needs a C-section, an on-call physician at DRMC would assist. “Not everyone is a candidate to deliver at the birth center,” Marcia said. “The people who birth here are very low

risk. We do perform regular emergency drills so if an emergency situation arises, we can handle things in a very timely manner.” While the facility is not open 24-hours a day, someone is always on call and a midwife and birth assistant are present at each birth. “We are physically here with the patient as long as they are here,” Nicole said. “The patients do go home early, around 4-6 hours after birth and then come back in 24-48 hours. We do all the same screenings for newborns that are done at the hospital, they are just able to go home in between.”

Natural Beginnings provides prenatal and postpartum care including ultrasounds, non-stress testing, and laboratory work. They also offer well-woman physical exams, birth control, and general gynecological services from adolescence through menopause. Family nurse practitioner, Amanda Harris, FNP, sees

patients for general, primary care needs. Natural Beginnings also offers lactation services and classes. Two lactation consultants see patients at the birth center and at Davis. Anyone in the community can utilize the lactation services, not just Natural Beginnings patients. Throughout all services, Natural Beginnings wants to customize care to each patient’s desires for their pregnancy and general health. “Overall, midwifery care is a different model of care than a traditional medical model,” Nicole said. “We have been trained, we’ve been nurses before, and we’ve been at the bedsides of patients for years. We have longer appointment slots, and we feel the patient is in control of their own healthcare. If they need education or have questions, we are here to help them understand all the options they have.” Natural Beginnings does take most major insurances and NC Medicaid.

Roger Hand of Titan Custom Builders designed a welcoming family home with a unique style.

Pleasantly at Home – Modern Industrial Farmhouse By Kristie Darling | Photos provided by Titan Custom Builders

Homes around Lake Norman must provide many different purposes…year-round family living, a home away from home, or a cozy retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life. When Roger Hand began designing this modern Craftsman style home, he was grateful to have guidance from the homeowners who had a lot of ideas about 20

what they wanted in their house well before they started putting plans on paper. The owners imagined large open spaces, room enough for family, friends, and guests, but not over-the-top. They were looking for a relaxing, sunny, fun, and fresh feel. Roger calls the style modern industrial farmhouse.

Working as partners with Roger Hand at Titan Custom Builders, the homeowners achieved all they dreamed of, and more. “We chose Roger because we wanted to work with a team that’s creative, top quality, and has a reputation for excellent workmanship. We were impressed that Titan won Best Custom Waterfront Construction in the Lake Nor-

man Homebuilders Association’s 2018 Best of the Lake Design Competition. After meeting with Roger, we were ready to go.” The lot is in a peaceful cove at the north end of Lake Norman and sits elegantly atop a naturally wooded slope. “A major challenge was the lot and its 17-foot drop from the house to the lake,” Roger explained. “To create a comfortable walk without steps down to the three-boat, deep water dock and covered decks, a lot of grading and filling were done.” The snaking walkway they built fits into the landscape perfectly. The homeowners specified several features that were must haves: spacious, inviting, sunny, and relaxing. Roger designed the house so that the main level

living spaces are open to the deck’s view of the lake. He paired rich wood architectural finishes with stone in both the interior fireplaces and exterior entryway and deck pillars so the blend of antique, natural, and earthy tones pulls the whole house together. STEP RIGHT IN Dark gray Hardie board exteriors, trimmed out in white with rich oak features and stacked stone create the façade. A long foyer leads you between built-ins to store and hang things. It’s a very welcoming feel you get throughout the home. “It was important to the homeowners that everyone who visits feels comfortable,” Roger said. A Sonos sound system was installed throughout the house so you can customize your at-home background music, if you like.

Roger connected all the home’s utilities— wi-fi, ceiling fans, HVAC, lights, security, entertainment, even smoke detectors—to an in-the-wall iPad that coordinates everything. STYLE WITH HEART Of course, the kitchen and family room are the heart of the home. Centered within simple white everything—cabinets, tiled backsplash, marble counters, and large casement windows—and surrounded by Kitchen Aide Pro stainless appliances, sits an island fit for a party, large family, or a creative chef. It’s a chef’s kitchen with the layout, equipment, and details geared to entertaining and cooking for two or twenty. The kitchen is open to the family room that features a beautiful stone fireplace IREDELL LIVING • MARCH 2019

with a natural oak mantel. Vaulted ceilings with rustic oak beams lead to a wall of windows and sliding doors providing access to the massive deck and frame the view of the lake. Luxury wood-grain plank laminate flooring was installed throughout for its style and durability. The master is a go-to peaceful retreat that opens to the deck. Its bath brings the farmhouse look together with a free-standing modern tub balanced between simple, but elegant, vanities. “It’s comfortably large,” Roger said, “but cozy enough to be very relaxing.” PLAY HARD, LIVE HAPPY As in many lake homes, the topography allows for prime lower level spaces, and Roger designed an entertainment room around a custom-built shuffleboard table. Included in this space is a bar that seats four. To complement the oak beams on the main floor and in the 22

IREDELL LIVING • MARCH 2019

framing of the exteriors, Roger used recycled European oak for the island bar top. Unique to the basement are dyed and polished concrete floors that were created in black and greys to mimic marble. They utilized the backside of the foundation and created an exposed concrete wall behind the bar to continue the look of a modern industrial farmhouse. Light fixtures in chrome, grey, and black wrought iron echo that look and feel. A large bonus room for play or guests, four spacious bedrooms, storage galore, and enough garage space for more than the family cars complete the package. “We kept the design open, warm, and relaxing. There’s nothing I would change,” Roger determined. “Making someone’s dream come alive is what we work so hard to do, and I know we achieved that in this home.”

Above, the long foyer is inviting and packed with storage.

uying a home that’s a fixer upper requires vision. Not everyone sees its potential, but because it is outdated, you can get all that potential at a great price. With some hard work and a remodel, you have plenty of room to build equity. A friend of mine, who doesn’t mind getting her hands dirty and loves putting her stamp on a home, recently purchased a fixer-upper. It’s not her first, and the home she bought had great bones but was terribly out of date style-wise. She came up with a short-game of DIY projects and a long-range remodeling plan for those issues that would require a professional. The first project on her DIY list was to strip outdated wallpaper and paint the interior. Taking down wallpaper is a messy job and much easier to do before you move all of your furniture in. With a few updated colors applied to the walls and some

new furniture, the inside had a new life. It’s amazing what a little paint and hard work can do! One of the most impressive transformations came with inexpensive updates to the front facade. The brick house had white shutters that were crumbling and a white door with brass hardware. The front door was covered with a screen door that had seen better days, so she removed it. The small stoop had a dated iron railing around it, making it feel cramped and smaller than it really was, so the stoop was opened up by removing the railing. The shutters were replaced with black paneled shutters. The Habitat ReStore had two sets of new shutters for $7.00 a pair and the short set came from a hardware store. At this point, she had spent $64 on her update, and the biggest transformation was yet to come—the front door. All the brass door hardware was removed, cleaned, and spray-painted black. The next step was to

choose a pop of color for the door. Most paint brands have web-based software to help you visualize and choose color. You can upload a photo of what you are painting and place color on the trim, walls, doors, etc. No paint swatches are needed! I have to say that the quart of light teal paint she purchased for the front door delivered the best bang for her buck and completed this phase of the renovation. These updates came in at a price tag of less than $100!

50 Shades of Red with Dr. Eva Imperial

An older home has usually been through renovations and updates over the years. Some may have been done properly and others not. By removing items that were installed incorrectly, that don’t fit the style of the home, or are outdated can improve the look and feel of your home tremendously and cost next to nothing. Sometimes, paint and some sweat equity are all you need to restore the look of a perfectly delightful home.

Interior Design Trends By Jessica Fox When it comes to home interiors, you will benefit by hiring a professional to help you design your space both aesthetically and for function. Knowing which trends are on their way out is just as important as knowing new styles coming in and can extend the life of your purchases. Interior designers can forecast the up-and-coming trends and help you weave your favorite pieces into a gorgeous space that you can enjoy for years to come. I recently spoke with Sally Bentley, a registered/certified interior designer, a professional member of the American Society of Interior Design (ASID), and founder of Designing Women, Inc. located in the Hickory Furniture Mart. She was in Texas designing a home and graciously gave me some time for a short interview.

Sally Bentley, interior designer with Designing Women located in the Hickory Furniture Mart

“The art of entertaining at home is making a comeback,” Sally said. “People really want beautiful and elegant design in their accessories and furniture.” With that in mind, I asked her to share some insight on the home design trends we have to look forward to in 2019. Here are her responses:

Interior paint color palettes:

Fabrics:

“We will see greens, pinks, and purples. Beautiful neutrals are coming back with warmer tones, which we are excited about, versus the cooler tones of past years.”

“Colorful florals and toile will make a comeback!”

Window treatments: “Draw draperies and side panels will continue to be the trend.”

Furniture: “Furniture will be all about color, elegance, softness, and curves.”

Flooring and tile: Photos taken by Aleah Leigh Photography and provided by

“Wood floors and marble tile will continue to be popular choices. And, we will definitely see more patterns in tiles.” Hopefully Sally’s advice will help you design your space, and if you find all your options too overwhelming, need direction, or can’t make a decision, call an interior designer!
