When you trust someone to be your partner in prosperity, you want them to value duty, honor, integrity, and loyalty. If you’re often putting your life’s savings, your livelihood, your financial future, and ultimately, your trust in this person— it should be the right person. Thayer Financial, a local boutique wealth management firm, is helping individuals in all stages of life achieve their financial goals through full-service financial planning and wealth management services. I recently interviewed Deaton and Kelly Smith, a dedicated husband-and-wife team at Thayer Financial. As fiduciaries, they are unwavering in their com10

mitment to always act in their client’s best interests, ensuring that every decision and action aligns with this core principle. A Four-Part Commitment from Thayer Financial In the world of finance, few things are certain. But by working with Thayer Financial, you can count on four things to be true 100% of the time. First is Deaton and Kelly’s commitment to their client’s well-being. “Our advisory approach is deeply personalized to ensure our clients have the best chance of reaching their goals,” Deaton said. Second is total transparency in all rec-

ommendations, meaning the advice you receive is untainted by the conflicts of interest typical in commission-based models. The third certainty you can count on with Thayer Financial is investment advice that is 100% in your best interest 100% of the time. Finally, you can rest assured that by working with the team at Thayer Financial, you are entering “a partnership for life that allows Thayer to be your partner in prosperity,” Kelly said. What is Financial Planning, and Who Can Benefit from it? Deaton and Kelly believe financial planning is “an ongoing process, not a one-time event,” Deaton said. “Ultimately, it can help establish clear financial goals, uncover unknown risks, optimize wealth accumulation, and help create a lasting legacy.” Thayer Financial’s planning process evolves with clients, aligning with market and tax law changes. While everyone can benefit from working with a CFP® professional, Thayer Financial focuses on families with complex needs, particularly those entering retirement. “We are known for working with families that have attained a level of wealth or income where their needs go beyond just investment support. Our clients are typically couples entering retirement, equipped with ample wealth, and seeking guidance to convert it into a steady income, but also want to avoid getting crushed in taxes,” Deaton said. The firm’s services are also tailored for business owners and high-earning professionals who have “a level of complexity to their tax situation and need help developing strategies to minimize their tax burden and continue building wealth,” Kelly said. How Does Thayer Financial Assist with Retirement Planning? Whether retirement is 20 or two years away, Thayer Financial can help you with your retirement planning process. “Retirement is only half-time of the game, and the second half of the game (retirement) is a lot more treacherous than during the accumulation stage,” Deaton said. Planning addresses not only how retirees spend their time but also threats like the rising cost of goods and inflation. Thayer Financial ensures clients will have “an investment strategy during retirement that maintains your purchasing power over the course of your 30+ year retirement,” Deaton continued. “In the second half of retirement, the IRS becomes a player, and they are trying to do everything they can to get as many tax dollars as possible,” said Deaton. Thayer Financial stresses the importance of working with a financial adviser well-versed in tax strategies to optimize savings and investments, as retirement brings unique challenges compared to the accumulation stage.

What Will I Receive in Thayer Financial’s Retirement Planning Process? When you work with Thayer Financial, you’ll be able to “keep more of your earnings for your family rather than giving it to the government” and be able “to focus on the things that matter most, instead of worrying about your finances,” Kelly said. Thayer Financial has developed its Prosperity 360 process to “tackle the evolving nature of our clients’ financial lives. Our unique process allows us to be hyperfocused on providing a world-class experience and delivering massive amounts of value to our clients daily,” Kelly said.

“During the accumulation stage, the IRS allows many opportunities to save money and lower taxes. But in retirement, the IRS code has rules that can cause retirees to pay massive penalties and excess taxes if not handled correctly,” Deaton shared. Is It Ever Too Early to Plan for Retirement? No matter how far off retirement may seem, starting early cannot be overstated. By starting early and developing disciplined savings habits, individuals can ensure a secure and comfortable future. “Taking advantage of compounding growth is crucial, which can significantly grow your savings over time. This might include employer-sponsored retirement plans like 401(k)s, IRAs, or other investment vehicles. Remember, the earlier you start, the more you benefit from time, allowing your investments to grow and providing a cushion against market fluctuations,” Deaton said. 12

Embracing a Heart-Healthy Lifestyle

©iStockphoto.com | Prostock-Studio

In a world filled with fast-paced living and sedentary habits, prioritizing heart health has become more crucial than ever. Cardiovascular diseases continue to be a leading cause of mortality globally, but the good news is that many of these conditions are preventable through adopting a heart-healthy lifestyle. In this article, we’ll explore key aspects of maintaining a heart-healthy lifestyle, encompassing diet, exercise, stress management, and overall wellness.

Dietary Habits The foundation of a heart-healthy lifestyle lies in making wise choices in the kitchen. Diets rich in healthy fats, lean proteins, fruit, vegetables, and whole grains are good for your heart. Embrace the Mediterranean diet, renowned for its heart-protective qualities. Incorporate omega-3 fatty acids found in fish, flaxseeds, and walnuts, as they play a vital role in reducing the risk of heart disease. Limit saturated and trans fats, found in fried and processed foods, as they can contribute to elevated cholesterol levels. 22

HICKORY LIVING • FEBRUARY 2024

Moderation is key, so keep an eye on portion sizes and be mindful of your calorie intake. Consider reducing sodium consumption to support healthy blood pressure levels. Experiment with herbs and spices to flavor your meals instead of relying on salt.

Regular Exercise Physical activity is a cornerstone of heart health. If you have medical issues, always check with your doctor before starting an exercise regimen. Any exercise is better than none, so start where you are and work your way up to where you want to be as your endurance increases. You want to alternate between moderate to high-intensity aerobic exercise. Try to walk three or four miles per hour for 30 minutes a day, five days a week, or ride a bike. Alternatively, engage in 75 minutes per week of vigorous-intensity activities, like running or high-intensity interval training. Regular exercise helps maintain a healthy weight, lowers blood pressure, and improves cholesterol levels.

Incorporate strength training exercises at least two days a week to enhance muscle tone and boost metabolism. Simple lifestyle changes, like taking the stairs instead of the elevator or going for a walk during your lunch break, can contribute significantly to overall cardiovascular fitness.

Stress Management We’ve all heard that stress will kill you. Chronic stress is not good for anyone and can lead to high blood pressure, taking a toll on your heart. Develop coping mechanisms such as deep breathing, meditation, or yoga to manage stress effectively. Adequate sleep is also crucial for heart health; aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep per night. Develop a regular routine of going to bed and getting up at the same time every day. Cut out screen time at least an hour before going to sleep and create a calm environment to improve falling asleep.

Avoid Unhealthy Habits Steer clear of tobacco and limit alcohol intake. Smoking is a major risk factor

for heart disease, as it damages blood vessels and raises blood pressure. Excessive alcohol consumption can also contribute to high blood pressure and heart failure. It’s better if you only drink occasionally or not at all. However if you are a daily drinker, women should limit their alcohol consumption to one drink per day and men to no more than two.

Regular Health Check-ups Regular health check-ups are essential for preventing and managing heart conditions by checking your blood pressure and ordering blood test to monitor your cholesterol levels and blood sugar. Address any abnormalities promptly with your healthcare provider to ensure early intervention and prevention of heart-related complications. Adopting a heart-healthy lifestyle is a holistic approach that involves making conscious choices in your daily life. By focusing on a nutritious diet, regular exercise, stress management, and avoiding harmful habits, you can significantly reduce your risk of cardiovascular diseases. Embrace these lifestyle changes, and let them pave the way for a longer, healthier, and more fulfilling life. It’s never too late to start!
