Welcome to the March issue. After the long, cold, wet winter, spring arrives later this month...what a welcome sight! March also signifies that we move our clocks ahead, or spring forward, one hour on March 11. And don’t forget to wear your green when St. Patty’s day arrives on March 17! Spring is my favorite time of year with its warmer weather and longer days, and the beauty that comes with new growth all around. This time of year allows us to be outside more and exchange that heavy winter coat for a light windbreaker. Try to take advantage of the additional daylight and warmth by going for a long walk, taking a hike, or enjoying a trail ride on your bike. Along with the fun things to do in spring, there is also work involved—the never-ending list of chores to do around the house under the name “spring cleaning.” My list is already made, how about yours? Until next month, I hope you enjoy the first month of spring, and thank you for reading the March issue of Iredell Living Magazine!

Planning Your Spring Projects By Kathy Wheeler

©iStockphoto.com | kanzefar

March ushers in the first day of spring and visions of warmer weather ahead. It may be too cold to get outside and work on spring projects, but it’s not too early to plan them! From envisioning our spring flower beds to brightening our interiors with DIY home décor pieces, spring is the time to get started. Many homeowners and crafters are mixing the old with the new, repurposing and upcycling old windows, doors, and other architectural pieces into works of art and furniture for their home. Doors can be upcycled into benches, hall trees, bar tops and table tops, backdrops for shelving, headboards, or just used as interesting architectural pieces with maybe a wreath hanging on it. Likewise, old windows are being hung on walls or placed over mantels as a piece of art, as a frame for photos, or repurposed as a mirror. Vintage doors and windows create that old farmhouse look. The chipping paint on these pieces adds to the 8

IREDELL LIVING • MARCH 2018

character and contributes to the aged, worn look. DIY crafters don’t want these projects to look new!

©iStockphoto.com | Joe_Potato

Before you start any project on an old painted piece, or before even bringing it into your home, you should test it for lead paint. Lead paint was banned in the United States in 1978, so anything older than that most likely contains lead and should be treated with caution. Remember that many of these windows and doors were replaced due to poor energy efficiency and…you guessed it … lead paint. Ingesting or breathing the dust from the paint is hazardous and

so are the paint chips. You can have the lead paint mitigated by a professional, however, it is expensive. If you are a DIYer and want to tackle the project yourself, certain precautions need to be taken – remember you bought these with chipping paint, so the paint has deteriorated. The goal is not to remove the lead but rather contain it and seal it. Stripping the paint could cause hazardous fumes, and lead may still remain in the wood. However, This Old House featured a contractor who used RemovAll, a nontoxic paint stripper. 3-M makes a lead paint tester that reveals the presence of lead within seconds. If your project contains lead, then you will need some safety equipment before you get started: a respirator rated for lead, a 6-mil plastic drop cloth to catch the chips, a pair of disposable rubber gloves, goggles, and you will need to cover your head, clothes, and shoes so that you don’t track the dust into your home when finished. Work outside instead of in the garage, and think ahead when it comes to the clean-up. You don’t want to sweep up the paint chips, but keep them contained on the drop cloth. As a DIY crafter, never use an electric sander on surfaces with lead paint or on surfaces that have been painted with lead paint. Wet the wood down with water and remove any loose paint chips and then seal it by painting over it with a bonding solution or a clear sealer. The whole point is to keep the paint contained on the surface, so that it isn’t chipping or there isn’t any dust involved. When finished, take your clothing cover and the drop cloth and seal them in a 6-mil bag to be thrown away. Don’t forget to replace the filter in the respirator, as well. DIY projects are fun, and spring is the perfect time to get started! On any project, do your homework, and make safety a priority.

They say that “home is where the heart is,” and if you ask the people who live at Hawthorne at Mooresville, they will tell you that this apartment community is full of heart—in the many unique and friendly ways its residents are served and in the generously spirited outreach that goes well beyond its boundaries. Hawthorne at Mooresville is at the end of an exciting transformation that surely pleases the current families and singles in residence but will also entice people looking for the perfect place to call home. It’s a beautiful setting designed for living the difference. 12

A HOME TO CALL YOUR OWN Hawthorne at Mooresville is a 22.5-acre property nestled in deep woods on the Lake Norman side of Mooresville. It’s beautifully landscaped, with the southerly placed buildings surrounding the clubhouse, and has a lovely resort-style pool and hot tub. The community is close to everything Mooresville has to offer—you could not find a better location. This area boasts one of North Carolina’s top school districts and is just minutes from beautiful Lake Norman, with its reputation for so many fun, recreational possibilities. With a connection to I-77 less than five miles away, the community’s location provides easy access to Charlotte and a variety of shopping, dining, and entertainment options nearby and in the big city. Hawthorne at Mooresville was acquired by Hawthorne Residential Partners at the end of 2016. The apartments were just waiting to be renewed, refreshed, and restyled. Interiors have been updated and thoroughly up-fitted with many stylish details and living space improvements. I’ve seen before and after photos, and I have to say the transformation is like night and day! Upgrades include authentic granite counter tops, gorgeous wood-look flooring, modern, stylish light fixtures, and a full complement of new, energy efficient, stainless-steel Whirlpool appliances. Hawthorne offers spacious one, two, and three-bedroom apartments that feature nine-foot ceilings, generous closet space, and kitchens large enough to live in, party in, and certainly, cook in. Pantries included! One new resident who gave her home a five-star rating said, “My renovated apartment is gorgeous! I love knowing that I am the first one to walk the floors and use the new granite countertops and appliances there.” Large windows throughout, even in some closets, let sunlight in for a warm ambiance that makes you feel right at home.

Apartment amenities vary with the units and are designed with separate dining rooms, open concept floor plans, patios or balconies (there are two levels), new hardwood cabinets, washer and dryer connections, deep kitchen sinks, built-in wine racks, and plush carpeting. Designer ceiling fans, 2-inch faux wood blinds, waterfall shower heads, track and pendant lighting, USB charging ports, granite countertops, flat cooktops, luxury vinyl flooring, and pool views give these apartments an elegant look and feel. Conveniently, the apartments are cable ready for today’s lifestyle, and washer and dryer rental can be arranged. Residents appreciate the spacious layouts, plenty of storage, high ceilings, and, “…there are lots of stores and restaurants close by.” LIVE THE DIFFERENCE is Hawthorne’s spot-on tagline, and the reason is quite obvious as soon as you pull into the community. Since acquiring the property, Hawthorne Residential Partners has made substantial upgrades to the entire community’s many desirable amenities. Extensive and beautiful renovations to the clubhouse and leasing center include expanding the fitness center, Hawthorne Health Hub, and creating space for a new business center, laundry facility, and 24-hour cyber café featuring high-speed Internet, with of course, a Starbuck’s coffee bar serving tea and hot chocolate, too. This spacious new clubhouse just opened in February. The many extras please everyone: 24-hour emergency maintenance, a clothes care center on-site, a fun, safe playground and bike racks, package receiving service, year-round social events, exclusive RV and boat parking, all in a smoke free community. And, if that wasn’t enough, Hawthorne at Mooresville has two offleash bark parks. Did I mention this place is pet friendly? What a wonderful addition to an already long list of bonus amenities! The clean, safe environment is user-friendly for all residents— many comment on the fun special events throughout the year, 14

A COMPANY WITH A BIG HEART It is Hawthorne’s LIVE IT! commitment that sets this apartment neighborhood apart from all others in the area. LIVE IT! reflects Hawthorne Residential Partners’ commitment to “leave people better than we found them.” Believing that they have a responsibility to give back to the local community, the employees provide their residents opportunities to join in their outreach. Hawthorne at Mooresville holds monthly events where neighbors connect with neighbors. Whether it is a full course Thanksgiving meal, a Hawaiian luau, or even handing out breakfast sandwiches for residents headed to work, setting friendliness and generosity as priorities creates a strong sense of community. This LIVE IT! commitment doesn’t stop with just residents, but rather, Hawthorne Residential Partners is committed to supporting people in the local community, as well. This year, in Charlotte, Hawthorne proudly supported Operation Christmas Child, Ronald McDonald House, and collected presents for the Toys for Tots program in partnership with

several other communities in the area. More locally, Hawthorne at Mooresville has volunteered at Mooresville Soup Kitchen and maintains a proud partnership with Mooresville Humane Society. The company employs unique individuals who are dedicated not only to Hawthorne, but also to the things that they are most passionate about in life. They proudly recognize their talented people knowing they are truly the heart of Hawthorne. The team effort is apparent to residents in the high level of customer service provided and individual attention offered to everyone who lives there. “The entire staff has been great and very quick to handle any issue,” shared one resident. “Thank you for making my home at Hawthorne at Mooresville a nice place to call home.” THINKING OF MOVING IN? Spring Cleaning By Jennifer Krawiec

Have you noticed daylight is lingering just a little bit longer in the evening? And can you tell that the temperatures are chilly but no longer bitingly cold? Despite the groundhog’s prediction, we know spring is right around the corner and that can only mean one thing: spring cleaning! Well, that may not be the only thing the season means to you, but it is a great opportunity—or excuse—to purge a closet or two, finally eliminate that junk drawer, or even go so far as to rehab an outdoor space to enjoy in the warmer weather.

When cleaning a clothes closet, ask yourself a few questions. Answer “no” to any of them, and the item needs to be donated, tossed, or consigned. Does it fit? Do you like it? Do you wear it? Is it still in fashion? Is it free of holes and obvious wear? Next, move on to the kitchen and ask yes/no questions about the functionality and use of all your gadgets and utensils, or the age or expiration of the foods and spices. This will keep you on track for 16

The first step to a good spring cleaning session is simply getting rid of those things you do not use or need. Starting small makes this step more manageable. Tackle one drawer, not the whole dresser; one closet will be less overwhelming than promising to organize all the closets in the house.

When you break down the purging process into small steps, and take one room or one drawer at a time, you turn a massive job into quick and easy small tasks which can be addressed at your convenience.

Organize

nedjel ly

When you rid your home of unnecessary objects, you open up more space for the things you need or use every day. The next step to spring cleaning is to take some time to organize. If you’re working on a clothes closet, group your hanging items by color, outfit, or season. In the kitchen, rearrange the contents of the cabinets so that your most frequently-used foods and tools are more accessible.

Maybe you would rather take that spring cleaning in a different direction: outside! The weather is improving, so clean up the outdoor area that you enjoy in solitude or a space where you like to gather with friends and family. You don’t need to budget building a new deck, but you can spruce up the old one with plants and a pressure wash. Staging an intimate sitting area on an otherwise bland front porch can be done for less than $100 by adding a chair (or two) and a small table. However you decide to celebrate this warmer weather, a few simple steps toward making your living space tidy and free of clutter will create a more enjoyable home, inside and out.

Diana Eshleman, AuD, founder and audiologist at All Generations Audiology, always knew she wanted to be in some type of career to help people like her brother who was born with multiple disabilities. Dr. Eshleman looked into careers like special education teacher, occupational therapist, physical therapist, and music therapist but ended up pursuing audiology. She graduated from UNC-Greensboro with a degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders. “My brother has multiple disabilities including a hear18

ing impairment, so I knew I would be helping people like him to communicate better,” Dr. Eshleman said. Dr. Eshleman went on to get her master’s degree in 2005 and completed her clinical fellowship in Charlotte in 2006. She continued her career in Charlotte and Texas. She received her Audiology Doctorate in 2011. After working as a provider at different practices, Dr. Eshleman decided to open her own practice 18 months ago in Mooresville. “The practice has filled gaps in service in the area and continues to grow,” Dr. Eshle-

She offers complete audiology services including neonatal, pediatric and adult diagnostic audiology services, hearing protection, hearing devices, OSHA screenings and evaluations, hearing aid repairs and reprogramming, auditory processing evaluations, and ear mold impressions. Dr. Eshleman understands that everyone’s needs and preferences surrounding their hearing are different. That is why she established an individualized billing model at All Generations Audiology. Patients pay for services as they occur, separately from any hearing devices, instead of paying for a care package upfront. “This lowers the upfront cost to the patient and sometimes lowers the overall cost, as well, depending on how much support they require through the process,” Dr. Eshleman said.

Helping people improve their daily lives and relationships through improving their hearing is rewarding for Dr. Eshleman. “Hearing loss is linked to social isolation and depression,” Dr. Eshleman said. “Because hearing loss typically occurs so gradually, a lot of people don’t realize all the ways it is affecting their lives until we start to correct it. To find out they are back in church, going out to eat again, having phone conversations with their kids again, or playing with their grandkids again is wonderful.”

Hearing loss is also directly related to quality of life. “How is your communication when your partner gets frustrated the third time they have to repeat something and just says, ‘never mind’ and walks off?” Dr. Eshleman said. “How independent can you be if you need to ask someone to repeat what another person just said? How is your relationship if you frequently misunderstand your partner? How do you keep your conversation private when you can’t understand a whisper and everyone else

You Are Celebrated

Go Where

By Lauren Davidson

I went to a committee meeting recently for a volunteer organization of which I am an enthusiastic member. There were about seven of us, and we spent the allotted hour discussing new ideas for activities that would raise funds for making a difference in the community. During that meeting, each member excitedly vocalized their ideas, and we all fed off the positive energy that we had ignited together. As everyone reading this will know, that’s not always the case with meetings. I’m frequently guilty of not speaking up, because I get nervous and doubt the importance of my ideas. Not with this committee, though. As I left that meeting, I felt excited and ready to get started on the tasks at hand. While I was driving home, I began to reflect on what had led me to success with this group. I decided that it had to be the environment of acceptance that we 22

had established. No one made anyone else feel idiotic for raising an irrelevant point. We took each other’s ideas with equal respect across the room, because even though all of us had different backgrounds and different points of view, we also all had a common goal. I left feeling proud of myself and accomplished, two feelings that we should all strive to attain more often. It also inspired each of us to immediately begin working on our project.

It may sound cheesy or new-age, but reconnecting with them also reconnected me to a part of myself that I had neglected, and that awakened in me the lost confidence of youth. Having friendships that go back to kindergarten will quickly humble you—those friends seem incapable of forgetting that embarrassing poem you wrote in third grade, and will not hesitate to remind you that you weren’t always capable of stringing sentences together so cohesively.

I recently experienced a similar feeling of reward with friendships. I’d say I have a lot of friends, but there are three people that I’d consider my very best friends, and unfortunately, all of them are long distance—maybe that’s how they put up with me! Over the past month, I’ve had visits with two of them, and spending time with them brought out what I consider to be my true self.

The point I’m trying to make is that it’s important to identify the organizations, relationships, and situations that give you confidence and leave you feeling like your best self. If you pour your energy into them, I believe that you’ll increase your self-worth, and by doing so, you may be surprised at what you can accomplish. In case you forgot, if you believe in yourself, you can do anything.

Divorce

Recovery By Morgan L. Ryerson

hat warm loving feeling you had on your wedding day, standing at the altar saying “I do,” is rarely the same feeling you get when you hire an attorney to handle your divorce. While an attorney will help you navigate the muddy waters of divorce and give you advice dividing bank accounts and 401(k)s, we aren’t much help with the emotional pain you experience during your divorce. Sure, we are there to listen and explain the legal issues, but once the divorce is finalized, assets divided, and your custody order signed, your attorney is no longer needed. You need to find a healthy way to get over this loss. Here are some tips to help. Divorce is a loss, and failure to treat it as anything less is cheating yourself of the opportunity to properly get over this heartbreak. Speaking with someone such as a counselor, a pastor, or even a close friend is the first step in the healing process. You need to be open with your emotions and open about how this process makes you feel. You are going from a party of two to a party of one, and that takes some getting used to. A counselor can help you work through these new feelings of uncertainty, grief, and sorrow. Divorce is the loss of a partner, a friendship, and a lover. And just like any loss, you are going to experience grief. While people grieve differently, this experience should be about

finding yourself and rediscovering who you are as an individual. You are no long Mr. & Mrs., with the built-in plus one because you are married. You are solo, living your life in a new way. You now have the chance to find yourself, a chance to reinvent who you are, and to find your new passion in life. For years, maybe you pretended to like your spouse’s hobby or sport just to spend time together. But now you have free time to do something that makes YOU happy! I cannot stress this enough: you need to feel passionate about something in your life again. Do you enjoy animals? Try volunteering at the animal shelter. Do you enjoy the outdoors? Join a group that goes hiking on the weekends and discover new trails. If you like to explore, plan a trip, by yourself or with a group of friends, and explore a new part of the country. There are endless opportunities. Look for the possibilities that make YOU feel fulfilled. Focus on yourself, be a little selfish. Discover your passion in life and find something that makes you happy. About the Author

M A WORD FROM

The Chamber: Is it Relevant Anymore?

David Bradley President and CEO Greater Statesville Chamber of Commerce

28

IREDELL LIVING • MARCH 2018

any of my colleagues quietly wrestle with the question of the relevancy of the Chamber in this dynamically changing world. Chambers evolved, in some communities, over 100 years ago with the intent to provide a vehicle by which business leaders could gather to address complex community issues. The typical mantra would be: “Together, we can accomplish much more than we could individually.” The local chamber of commerce focused on pertinent issues like economic, downtown, and tourism development. In many cases, including within the Greater Statesville Chamber, those divisions were spun off to create separate organizations. The division of responsibilities left the leadership of the organization pondering their relevance. The typical chamber focused on providing direct networking and marketing support for their members. Over the last twenty years, technology has provided valuable means to expand and focus marketing efforts. So what role does the chamber now play? My contention is that we must look back to our roots to understand that a local chamber of commerce has a unique opportunity to tackle substantive issues. Make no mistake, we must, in the short term, provide our members direct assistance in building a stronger economic profile. I am more convinced than ever, though, that we must be willing to claim a space in initiatives that will have a long-term, positive impact on our community. We must reclaim our original focus of being a vehicle through which many work toward a common goal. One of the anchors that keeps our community from realizing its economic potential is the lack of a ready workforce.

Iredell County is one of the few counties in the state where there are more jobs available than there are people who are unemployed. What is the Chamber’s role here? We have developed outstanding partnerships with Iredell-Statesville Schools, Mitchell Community College, NC Works Career Center, and others. We, along with the economic development organization in the county, are uniquely capable of connecting businesses to educators to the workforce. TOGETHER, we have the opportunity, if not the moral imperative, to expand our local workforce. Through this partnership in 2018, our collaboration will: • Promote to students as early as 6th grade and their parents—in every possible way—the jobs that are and will be available in Iredell County, including the pathways (typically through Mitchell Community College) to develop the skill sets needed for those jobs. • Expand by 20% the number of internships for public school students in business. • Establish a speakers’ bureau of local business leaders who will visit and speak in schools throughout the year. • Provide job and career fairs throughout the community, focusing on pockets of our population with higher unemployment rates. • Develop and implement a strategic plan to recruit people to move to Iredell County to live and work. I delight in responding to my colleagues’ questions about relevancy. Chambers are equipped to address BIG issues in a cohesive and collaborative way. Together, we can and will accomplish relevant goals.

A WORD FROM

Live the Good Life Showcase March 22nd

Kirk Ballard President and CEO Mooresville - South Iredell Chamber of Commerce 30

IREDELL IREDELL LIVING LIVING •• MARCH MARCH 2018 2018

S

ince 2008, the Mooresville-South Iredell Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with the Leading Edge Healthcare Leads Group, has presented the Live the Good Life Showcase. This year we are helping meet a critical need for blood within our community by partnering with the Community Blood Center of the Carolinas to host a blood drive during the event. It was the Mooresville Chamber Healthcare Leads Group that first created the idea of a healthcare showcase which is now in its 10th year. This showcase is free and open to the public on Thursday, March 22nd from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Charles Mack Citizen Center. Due to the popularity of this event, we have doubled in size and now have over 80 booths available. There will be vendors on-site with various health screenings available. This year we will spotlight holistic medicine, which is a form of healing that considers the whole person—body, mind, spirit, and emotions in the quest for optimal health and wellness. According to the holistic medicine philosophy, one can achieve optimal health by gaining proper balance in life. Holistic medicine practitioners believe that the whole person is made up of interdependent parts, and if one part is not working properly, all the other parts will be affected. In this way, if people have imbalance (physical, emotional, or spiritual) in their lives, it can negatively affect their overall health. A holistic doctor may use all forms of healthcare, from

conventional medication to alternative therapies, to treat a patient. A key element to providing great healthcare for our residents, patients, and clients is efficient communication among the healthcare continuum. The South Iredell Healthcare Showcase combines business networking and educational programs geared toward those in the healthcare community, or those who want to work with businesses and organizations in the healthcare community. The Mooresville Chamber Leading Edge Healthcare Group is proud to sponsor a monthly gathering of healthcare professionals and those in related or allied professions and businesses. The group convenes at 8:30 a.m. on the last Tuesday of every month at Brookdale Churchill Senior Living Center in Mooresville. There are no membership fees to attend. Guests are welcome. The forum’s average attendance is 40-60 people. The Leading Edge Healthcare Leads Group will be helping with the healthcare expo, so let’s kick off the year by inviting a friend or business colleague to join you at this special event. If you would like to be a sponsor or reserve a booth at this year’s Healthcare Expo, contact us at the MSI Chamber office Monday thru Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., by calling 704-664-3898.
