from the publisher Welcome to the June issue. School will let out this month, so we hope you enjoy some summer fun. Local water parks and theme parks are always a favorite for families with children and the young at heart. If you are a wine lover, take a day or weekend to visit some of the wineries in our area.

Father’s Day is Sunday, June 16th. Being a dad to three young children has made me more appreciative of my own father’s sacrifices and challenges in balancing work and family. Let your dad, or any important father figure, know that you appreciate their efforts, love, and influence. Getting a big hug and a handmade card from my own children will be a cherished gifts!

Friday, June 21st is the first day of summer, and if this spring was any indication, it is going to be a hot one. Enjoying the outdoors in the heat requires a little planning. Drink plenty of water and wear sunscreen. Plan as much outdoor fun as possible during the cooler mornings and evenings, and stay close to the A/C during the hottest part of the day.

We believe there is power in possibility. We see the extraordinary in people and celebrate the uniqueness in everyone. We deliver exceptional customer service, do the right thing, support our communities, inspire others, and strive to be exceptional. We are Peoples Bank. Banking. We all do it. Every day, every month, all year long. So, wouldn’t you say it’s essential to get it right? After all, our financial resources impact so much of what we do, where we go, and how we live. Your bank is important. That’s why Peoples Bank strives to Be Exceptional.

“Exceptional customer service is our mission statement, because it is what we strive for every day,” said Lance Sellers, president and CEO. “Exceptional means to be your best self, pursue your dreams, and achieve your greatest potential. We do our part by being exceptional at serving you.” Indeed, the almost 300 employees at Peoples Bank are serious about striving for the exceptional no matter if they are making decisions at a corporate level or working with your family opening a new checking account. A BIT OF HISTORY Peoples Bank was founded as a local, community bank in 1912. Today, there are 18 full-service branch offices throughout Iredell, Mecklenburg, Catawba, Lincoln, Alexander, Wake, and Durham counties and two loan production offices, with corporate headquarters in Newton. “Peoples Bank has been serving our communities for over 100 years with the integrity you would expect from a community bank,” said Nick Vertorano, branch manager at the Cornelius office. “Our organization believes in connecting with people and building communities that thrive.” HOMETOWN FEEL, FULL-SERVICE BANKING The folks who work at Peoples Bank live nearby, so they intimately care about their customers—they are neighbors. Ryan Waddle is area executive at the Mooresville branch. “At Peoples Bank, we focus on providing individuals, families, and businesses both large and small with products and services that help them manage their money and resources. We’re a hometown bank with all the conveniences and services of much larger institutions. People feel welcomed and valued IREDELL LIVING • JUNE 2019

here…we know their names and their unique needs when it comes to banking. We’re able to help take care of the communities we serve in many ways.” Banking should be convenient, simple, and helpful. It should be easy. Peoples Bank offers a full suite of banking products and services—something for everyone. From checking accounts that offer benefits and savings at local and nationwide merchants to mobile banking that allows customers to bank where they are, when they need it, the description “exceptional” again comes into play. “Our customer services representatives will meet with you personally, answer your questions, and recommend the right products to suit your unique situation,” said Lu Rogers, regional sales manager. “For individuals, personal checking accounts, debit and ATM cards, of course, and saving accounts that include e.savings, youth, retirement, and health savings accounts. You’ll find we offer competitive interest rates, too. Online banking services with bill pay, mobile check deposit, mobile wallets, and fraud prevention, along with credit cards, personal, home, and vehicle loans…all these services, at our branches and online, have you covered.” On the business side of banking, Peoples Bank’s services keep your information readily available, every day. “We have a range of business products designed to fit businesses of all sizes. Our business development officers are knowledgeable and passionate about helping clients meet all of their goals and succeed,” Lu continued. “Our Treasury Management Services give you better control over the financial operations of your business.” Treasury Management includes enhanced bill pay, expedited payments, tax payment services. It is compatible with QuickBooks and Quicken, one of the many benefits of that service. It truly brings managing corporate finances directly into the hands of financial managers.

HELPING YOU GET WHERE YOU’RE GOING Banking services that serve your goals are essential. “Peoples Bank offers services similar to other banks in our area—the big difference is that we are very clear about what we do,” Nick shared. “Our longtime mission has always been to provide exceptional customer service while selling to our customers’ specific needs. In today’s environment, it’s a powerful message to state that our intention is to sell to customer needs. It’s who we are.” Bank customers work with their personal banker to manage many aspects of life. Money management and life planning are made easy, whether it’s looking at retirement finances, getting the right loan for your home, car, boat, or RV, direct deposit, or keeping up with monthly bills. You can expect an

Peoples Bank was awarded five stars by bauerfinancial.com last year. IT’S ABOUT COMMUNITY With 35 years’ banking experience, CEO Lance Sellers has worked his way from chief credit officer at Peoples Bank in 1998 to managing this homegrown bank. Lance grew up in Gaston County, so he understands the value of living in the community where you work. “Community means a lot to Peoples Bank,” he shared. “Our employees work with local families and large and small family-owned businesses every day. Their work is inspired whenever we see new jobs created, new businesses undertaken, or established businesses thriving. We see just how our work and our services positively impact the growth and wellbeing of our communities.” Community involvement is readily apparent at Peoples Bank—employees stay connected through their work at the Bank. Peoples Bank’s headquarters in Catawba is the last of its kind. “What really sets us apart is that we are a local bank, with local people who are involved in our community, making important

decisions that encourage growth and prosperity,” Lance said. “So much about banking is moving online, and while some banks are closing, we are growing and opening new branches— one in Cary, North Carolina most recently, so we can meet the needs of our customers where they live.” EXCEPTIONAL PEOPLE People do business with people they like, know, and trust. At Peoples Bank, this is undoubtedly the case. The Bank’s team of professionals understand what you need, whether it’s getting your family into a new home, helping newlyweds get started in life, or showing a fresh college grad how to navigate through critical financial decisions. They go the extra mile. “Our goal is for every customer to understand that we have their back,” Nick said. “We work hard to ensure that when their banking is done for the day, they click offline or walk out the door satisfied that our services really are exceptional.”

Northwest Sound Control You Should Hear What You’ve Been Missing! By Kristie Darling | Photos courtesy of Northwest Sound Control

Don’t you just hate when you’re really interested in something, but you can’t hear it? Perhaps you’re at a concert or workshop, in a business meeting, a restaurant, or in church. Your experience is ruined because the acoustics in the building are awful. Sounds terrible, doesn’t it?—pun intended. Sound and noise problems in a building are more common than you might think. They’re caused by many factors, and the professional team at Northwest Sound Control can identify and rectify what’s keeping your sound from being music to the ears and not a distraction or annoyance to the people you serve. “Our job is to develop a solution to fix the sound problems in a building,” Eric Pennell explained. “Architectural trends can affect 18

IREDELL LIVING • JUNE 2019

the acoustical performance of your space. You might not even realize what’s causing the problem. The room looks great… but the room sounds terrible. Without affecting the beauty or appearance of a particular space, we can correct the problem.” Eric is the company’s sound sales consultant, and he comes to this job with solid, high-tech experience in sound design and acoustics management. PARTNER BUSINESSES Northwest Sound Control is a sister company of Northwest Drywall Company, a long-standing successful construction company in Hickory that has beautifully created interior spaces in homes, colleges, hotels, museums, auditoriums, office buildings, and businesses large and small—thousands of construction pro-

jects, simple and complex. The company was started over 45 years ago and has attained a reputation for excellent quality work that is competitively priced by a team of skilled, reliable people—a simple but effective business plan. Chris Bryan is president of the company, and he’s very excited about growing the sound control side of his business. “We’ve been doing effective sound management through Northwest Drywall for over 40 years, and now we’re applying that simple but effective business plan to Northwest Sound Control,” Chris said. “It’s exciting to see this expansion. We have top quality talent on-hand to continue and grow this component of our business. It’s a win-win.” WHAT ARE YOUR SOUND CHALLENGES? These sound problems can haunt your space, no matter what its use: Loud spaces and echoes. Lack of privacy, transfer of sound from one area to another, and communication that is drowned out or not clear. Distracting sounds that interfere with business, presentations, or conversation. Footstep noise or reverberation problems. Solutions come in several categories, depending on the source of

the problem: absorb the unwanted sound with baffles and acoustic panels, block the space with walls to reduce sound travel, or mask the sound with high-tech devices that eliminate hearing the unwanted sounds. These solutions are helpful in situations where confidentiality in conversation is required as in doctors’ offices, where the overall ambient noise is a distraction or annoyance, in open cubicle or call center spaces, or when the sound produced, as in a church, needs to be heard throughout a large, open space. There are solutions to your sound issues with Northwest Sound Control. Contact Eric Pennell, 828-324-5100, for a free site assessment of your space. You really do want to hear what you’ve been missing!

Each month a new, carefully selected book will be mailed in your child’s name directly to your home. Reading is the pathway to a brighter future for both your child and our community. Spending time with your child and an open book is a wise investment. It helps them dream big, nurturing the seeds of growing talents. And you’ll spend quality time you’ll never forget.

As a dentist who sees all ages, I get a lot of questions about caring for baby teeth. I thought it might be helpful to answer a few frequently asked questions based on today’s research and professional advice.

Fluoride supplements may be recommended if drinking water does not have enough fluoride. A baby should no longer drink from a bottle by about 12-14 months.

When should I take my baby to the dentist? The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, American Dental Association, and the American Academy of Pediatrics all recommend a dental visit for children by age one or at the sign of their first tooth.

How do I care for my baby’s teeth (or lack thereof)? Even before baby teeth appear, proper oral care is vital. Parents should clean their baby’s mouth and gums regularly with a soft bristled toothbrush or a clean cloth and water.

Both of my children love a pacifier. My daughter is almost three, and we have weaned her off the pacifier so that she just gets it at nap and night. Limiting the exposure to her sucking habit has a huge benefit in preventing a prolonged and harmful habit.

This shocks a lot of parents! The benefits of starting dental care early are tremendous. It enables the child to begin a lifelong preventive dental care program, detects early tooth decay, provides parents with information on proper dental development, and fluoride needs can be determined.

Are thumb, finger, and pacifier habits bad? Sucking habits are normal for babies and young children. Most babies stop sucking fingers and pacifiers on their own between age two and four. Prolonged sucking can cause upper teeth to tip out toward the lip or not come in properly. This can affect the way your child’s teeth bite together, how the jaws grow, and bones that support the teeth. Dental intervention may be recommended if the child has a sucking habit beyond age three.

Impacted wisdom teeth can cause problems, such as infection and disrupting teeth’s natural alignment, as they attempt to emerge from your gums. Also, tumors or cysts can form around the tooth resulting in the destruction of the jaw bone and healthy teeth. Removal of the offending impacted tooth or teeth usually resolves these problems. Early removal is recommended. Anyone who is missing teeth and finds it difficult or impossible to wear removable dentures is a candidate for dental implants. Portions of the jaw that are

missing due to a facial trauma, disease, or birth defect can often be reconstructed using implants. Drs. Darab and Richardson can determine if you are a candidate for dental implants. Foothills Oral Surgery uses the most advanced technology to help achieve the best predictable results for their patients including digital scanning, CT imaging, 3-D guided implant placement, and platelet-rich fibrin treatment to aid bone regeneration. With offices in Hickory, Lincolnton, and Statesville there is a convenient location close to you. Dental insurance, no worries, Foothills Oral Surgery is a preferred provider for many dental insurance plans and will gladly file your dental insurance. Experience

Alleghany County

Alleghany County marketing coordinator, Sarah Dalton, sums up quite succinctly why she and her husband came back home after his military service. “There are few places,” she said recently, “where I feel as connected to the community as I do here.” In fact, those two words, “connection” and “community” are woven into virtually every aspect of describing life in Alleghany County. Connection to the Land One of North Carolina’s top producers of Frasier fir Christmas trees, pumpkins, and cattle, Alleghany has a rich agricultural heritage. Familyowned farms are scattered across the county’s hills and valleys, producing fresh vegetables for local restaurants and the farmers market in Sparta. In late fall, visitors flock to choose-andcut Christmas tree farms where family memories are formed or renewed. 26

Located at the geographical center of the Blue Ridge Parkway, Alleghany lays claim to be the Heart of the Blue Ridge Parkway. On September 11, 1935, ground was broken in Alleghany County for the 469-mile linear national park that connects the Shenandoah and Great Smoky Mountains National parks. Congressman and Alleghany resident Robert Doughton was instrumental in ensuring the Parkway passed through North Carolina. Doughton Recreational Area at milepost 214 is named for Congressman Doughton. Connection to the Arts Alleghany County has a deeply rooted history of music and other cultural arts. A recent survey found that a variety of live music is performed five nights out of seven in the county. While often associated

with traditional old-time and bluegrass music, Alleghany County plays host to musicians of many genres, including the Western Piedmont Symphony. The Voices of Alleghany and the Alleghany Writers group maintain a local storytelling tradition, both written and spoken. Local artisans, from custom furniture makers to potters, and everything in between, display their creations all along Sparta’s Main Street. Alleghany Quilters Guild members produce quilts that are both warm and cozy and amazing works of art. These artists and craftsmen are eager to discuss their work and might even offer an impromptu lesson to inquisitive visitors. Old-time and bluegrass musicians from around the world will gather at the Alleghany Fiddlers Convention, held on July 19-20 at the Alleghany Fairgrounds. This is your opportunity to enjoy lively string music at its very best. Fiddle competitions, clogging, and informal jam sessions will keep you entertained all weekend. Music on Main is a street festival held on the first Friday nights of June through September. Local restaurants offer live music followed by a street performance by the headline bands from 8:00 to 10:00 pm. This is a family friendly event enjoyed by people of all ages.

versation.” She adds with a laugh, “Some can be a little difficult to walk away from once they get started. You become neighbors quickly here in Alleghany County. “And the stories they tell,” she continues. “The stories I have heard are absolutely fascinating!”

Culture of Food Alleghany County contains a host of family-owned restaurants where it is not unusual to be served by multiple generations of the family. The cuisine ranges from country cooking to fine dining. You are guaranteed to be welcomed like a long-lost family member and served up an unforgettable meal. Culture of Neighborliness When pressed about her opinion of the best place to get a true Alleghany County experience, Sarah Dalton answers without hesitation, “We have beautiful scenery, great food, and some of the most talented people you can imagine; but, of course, many places have those things. Our best attributes are our people—they still wave when they meet you on the road. They are open to engaging in con-

What's Cooking?! Spiced Pecan Grilled Peach Salad with Goat Cheese

It’s time to stock up on fresh produce and light the grill for a season of outdoor gatherings with friends and family. Grill peaches–a summer favorite–and pair it with fresh greens and roasted pecans for a salad your guests will love!

Spiced Pecan Grilled Peach Salad with Goat Cheese Spiced Pecans: 1 egg white 3 tablespoons dark brown sugar 1 teaspoon cinnamon ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper ¼ teaspoon kosher salt 2 cups pecan halves Salad Dressing: ¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil or pecan oil ¼ cup white wine vinegar 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard ¼ teaspoon garlic powder ⅛ teaspoon kosher salt ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper Salad 2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil or pecan oil 2 large peaches, halved & pitted 6 cups mixed baby greens 4 ounces soft goat cheese Directions Pecans: Heat oven to 275° F. Line rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper.

In bowl, whisk egg white, brown sugar, cinnamon, cayenne pepper and salt until well combined. Fold in pecans and mix until evenly coated. Spread in single layer on baking sheet. Bake 45-50 minutes, stirring occasionally until pecans are fragrant and golden brown. Allow to cool completely. Salad Dressing: In bowl, whisk ¼ cup olive oil, white wine vinegar, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, salt and pepper. Set aside. Salad: Brush cut sides of peach

halves with remaining olive oil; grill until grill lines appear and peaches become tender, about 3-5 minutes. Remove peaches and slice. Divide greens among four plates. Top with grilled peach slices and goat cheese. Divide 1 cup spiced pecans evenly among salads and reserve remaining for snack. Top each salad with drizzle of vinaigrette.
