LIVI NG

Welcome to the June issue. As the weather heats up, pools open up and schools empty out, with June being the month where we welcome cookouts and vacation with wide open arms! It’s a time to soak up the sun and socialize with friends and family on warm summer nights with glasses full of iced tea, lemonade, or your favorite beverage of choice. Remember to find your local American Red Cross to donate in honor of World Blood Donor Day on June 14th. Donations of all blood types are needed but especially those with type O negative blood and types A negative and B negative. The demand is great but supply is low. In giving, we help our friends, our family, and our neighbors! We also look forward to the third Sunday in June set aside to honor the amazing men in our lives who offer endless support and guidance through fatherhood. Be sure to celebrate this special day with your dad, and let him know how much you appreciate him. Until next month, I hope your summer is off to a fantastic start, and thank you for reading the June issue of Iredell Living Magazine!

Qualities Of A Good Father By Cheryl Grant

©iStockphoto.com | Ridofranz

Father’s Day is June 17th, a day for honoring our dads for all they have done for us. Each father has his own style, but most good fathers possess certain qualities. These qualities help them with their tasks of raising well rounded and confident children. Principles– father with good prinPrinciples–A ciples sets standards for his family. He teaches these values to his children by both living them and encouraging his children to live by them. Open-minded–He encourages his children to do what they love and he takes interest in what they are doing, but requires that they be productive. He has the ability to learn new things from them and acknowledges when they teach him things. There are many differences between the generations, and he is not so stuck in his ways that everything has to be the way it used to be or that his children have to follow in his footsteps.

8

IREDELL LIVING • JUNE 2018

Patience– father will tolerate ocPatience–A casional irresponsible mistakes, letting children learn from them. However, he will not tolerate a habit of making poor decisions from his children. Unconditional love–He may not approve of his children’s actions but loves them anyway. Disciplinarian–He is a good disciplinarian and is stern with his children, but he does not use violence to show his disapproval. Sets a good example–He lives in front of them the way he thinks they should live. He doesn’t emanate the “do as I say, not as I do” approach. He is loving and respectful to their mother. Teacher–He teaches his children skills that he feels will help them be independent. Provider–He will work endless hours to provide what his children need, but he is not a pushover. He will not give them

everything they want without making them work for it. Fun-loving– good father knows how Fun-loving–A to have fun with his family. He may take them camping or to the movies, teaching a healthy appreciation of adventure and fun. No parent is perfect and all make mistakes. After all, we parents are human, too. And let’s face it, if anyone can cause us to lose our cool, it is our children. Being able to admit we’ve made a mistake is essential to maintaining the respect of our family. It takes more than shared genes to be a good father. There are many men who have raised children who were not their own and have done a tremendous job being a dad. To those men, your children thank you and so does the community. At Iredell Living Magazine we wish all the men who sacrifice each day for their children a Happy Father’s Day. Your devotion and hard work do not go unnoticed.

The Very Best in

Summer Fashion

By Kristie Darling | Photos by Shane Greene Photography

“Aqua B has always been about making women feel pretty,” Michele Willis said with a smile. Michele is owner ((proprietress) and fashionista (a very fashionable person, especially one who works in the fashion industry) par excellence (better than all others) at Aqua B, one of our region’s fastest growing, most fun and trendy women’s—and children’s— clothing and gift boutiques. “I am most proud that our customers keep coming back. They share this place with girlfriends and let us know how much they appreciate our fashions, our style, and our pricing. That makes me feel great everyday.”

STYLE…STYLE…STYLE Aqua B is the shopping destination to keep at the top of your list when your wardrobe needs a style pick-me-up, or you have a special event coming up where WOW is the word of the day. Add to that equation comfort, affordability, and shopping convenience, and it’s a no-brainer. Women of all ages can find the perfect outfit, accessory, or gift every time they visit. Aqua B’s always-fresh selections are newly inspired every two months after Michele makes a trip to the Atlanta Apparel Market. “Since most women really want to see and touch the material and

get a feel for how it will wear and drape, the Market gives us the chance to select items for their quality, cut, color, and style. Market is a fabulous experience— the fashion shows are awesome.” When I last shopped at Aqua B, the clothes were all soft, high quality, and beautifully designed—very fun, very today. And, because Michele and her sales and management team have walked the Market time and time again, you can be sure that any item you select and purchase online is made to last with quality fabric that wears well and looks great. They have handpicked items that are essential to everyone’s closet. You

can preview and purchase beautiful clothing on the website, shopaquab.com, and from Facebook and Instagram. You’ll find online exclusives, fashion model photos, sales, special events, and news there, too. SERENDIPITOUS CONVENIENCE I learned about Aqua B’s expansion into Blowing Rock last December, when I was there for holiday shopping—who doesn’t run up to Blowing Rock at Christmas?—and I was delighted to find Michele’s new store open and fabulous. What a wonderful surprise. “We’ve expanded to four stores: the original Hickory store in Union Square, Mooresville’s bustling store at Super Target Shopping Center, the Blowing Rock store near Blowing Rock Ale House, and most recently, our store in downtown Morganton, across from Treat Restaurant,” Michele explained. “For folks in Iredell, Mooresville is a convenient and a fun place for some much-needed retail therapy or a quick in-and-out to pick up a gift or necessary new piece. We have lots of regulars, and new customers come in all the time.” WHAT’S IN STORE? “Amanda Trouille has managed the Mooresville store since we opened the doors in 2014,” Michele shared. “She really knows fashion, and she is one of the most friendly, helpful women I know.” Amanda explained what’s happening in the Mooresville store, “Since we have so much in addition to clothes, there’s something for everyone, for every occasion. I’m excited about all that we carry, including several clothing lines that are particularly popular today. Free People is a specialty line of clothing, shoes, intimates, swimwear, and accessories—a trendy bohemian, vintage look in maxi dresses, tops, pants and jeans, and shoes that are fun to wear and look good on women of every lifestyle. Lucky Brand is a fabulous line of sporty, stylish dresses, tops and jeans, jackets, sweaters, and shoes.”

Photos—Above, top to bottom:

• Aqua B carries Free People, Lucky Brand, BedStu, Simply Southern and so much more! • Mannequins constantly change to display the newest arrivals. • If you’re looking for the perfect accessory to complete your outfit, look no further!

14

IREDELL LIVING • JUNE 2018

The stores are filled with wonderful outfits and separates to try on—spend a little time to discover the look you’re after. “There’s no age limit to trendy fashion,” Amanda continued. “Our customers are grandmothers, mothers, and daughters. Whatever your age, you can put together a complete outfit for under $150. We carry from sizes 1 to plus sizes, and also little girl’s sizes 7 to 14.” This summer you’ll see lots of kimonos, embroidered tees, and comfort pieces. Maxi dresses, jumpsuits, oversized tops, and destructed denim are top sellers right now. You will find all these trendy pieces, and more, at Aqua B. SIMPLY SOUTHERN It wouldn’t be North Carolina if Aqua B didn’t carry Simply Southern. This hugely desirable assortment of whimsical graphic tees and fun stuff is perfect for summer days creating your own unique look. Amanda showed me the Simply Southern collection on display. “I think we have the largest selection—over 60 styles—of Simply Southern items around,” she

told me. “Tees and socks, of course, plus back packs, umbrellas, phone cases, fun lanyards for people who want to make a statement with their ID at work, koozies, key chains, croakies and sunglass retainers, are best sellers.” Tees start at just $16.99 or two for $30. ACCESSORIZE NOW! Fashion accessories can be the most fun item to shop for. After all, size isn’t an issue, the price is always right, and there’s so much to choose from! Jewelry is one accessory we can’t live without, and you will be delighted at the wonderful finds in the boutique. “Erimish bracelets are amazing,” Michele told me, “with names like Tahiti, Icing, Deep Sea, Mermaid, and Summer Vibes, what’s not to love? Oh, and did I mention we carry kids and adult Erimish?” These mix-and-match bracelets are priced to sell and cherish. Pura Vida jewelry has a free-spirit style that goes casual and dressy alike. Dainty bangles with a poetic message will charm your heart…so simple and sweet. Necklaces and earrings, even monogrammed pendants and earrings, in all finishes and materials from stone, gold, silver, leather, twine, and everything in between. Jewelry wraps up your look everyday. Ball caps with a message are here! “We have personalized caps that ID you in a fun way,” Amanda explained. “Wear yours—are you 704? 828? LKN?” Backpacks, crossbodies, and wristlets are a must. Aqua B’s unique selection of bags make a statement and coordinate with any outfit. ALWAYS FRIENDLY Amanda smiled as she showed me around. “Everyday, and with everyone who comes in, I get to play dress-up. I love helping women find new clothes that they might not otherwise take off the rack. Thinking beyond my own personal likes to suggest the perfect something for a customer’s unique, perfectly-herown sense of comfort and style is one of the best parts of my job. There’s so much to choose from! And everyone walks out happy, looking amazing!” Making women feel pretty is important, just as Michele says, but making women feel comfortable, welcome, and well-served is critical. Michele is passionate about customer service. She goes out of her way to make sure your shopping experience is fun and fruitful. “I think women shop here for our friendly, knowledgeable service. Our staff treat shoppers the way they would like to be treated themselves—no high pressure—simply helpful, friendly assistance…always with a smile.” MOORESVILLE 688-B Bluefield Road

Matching Employers with the Right Employees By Meredith Collins | Photos by Shane Greene Photography

If you’re an employer, you know the human resources part of your company can be taxing and time consuming, which can negatively affect your bottom line. Searching for candidates, reviewing applications, interviewing potential employees, calling references, and evaluating skills are among the long list of todo’s when searching for a new employee. Express Employment Professionals can take the load off and make it simpler for employers to find employees that best fit their needs. With a stable nine years in business serving our community, the Express team has a large pool of candidates ready and waiting to be put to work. “We don’t restrict our job seekers from our application process,” Jamie Ottinger, owner, said. “We accept walk–ins any 18

time of the day, as we get new open positions all the time. And, we only ask for patience while we market those applicants who are regularly calling in to make themselves available to us for placement.” Jamie encourages all job and career candidates to apply and get their information in the Express database. With a large network of employers and employees, Express can often make a quick match. “Where it might take an employer days to find the right candidate, it’s possible that Express can find that candidate in a matter of hours,” Jamie said. “We can reduce downtime for the employer and eliminate that towering stack of resumes so that they can fill positions quickly and successfully.”

Express Employment Professionals is part of a 33-year-old international corporation with over 700 employment offices in the United States, Canada, South Africa, and Australia. On a local level, Jamie serves the community with employability resources, and she is on the board of directors of SCAN of Iredell County, which helps support healthy families through counseling and intervention to stop child abuse. Jamie is also a member of the Mooresville-Lake Norman Exchange Club. “My goal from a business to business perspective is to utilize these organizations to partner with area employers to strengthen our local community,” Jamie said. Her office covers the staffing needs of Iredell, Rowan, and Cabarrus counties. She works closely with the chambers of commerce in these communities building relationships with their employers. tions, and part-time to full-time. They never charge a fee to their applicants! “There are more jobs now and less qualified candidates, whereas approximately two years earlier, there were less jobs and more qualified candidates,” Jamie said.

If you have never used a head hunting firm to market your skills, consider giving Express a try. Jamie and her team of recruiters work with over 100 companies in our area, and they are ready to work with you, too!

A Divorce Attorney’s Advice on

©iStockphoto.com | Zinkevych

How to Leave the Marriage By Judith M. Daly

Stop! Do NOT fling that vase at your spouse’s head! Remove yourself from the situation, and when safe to do so, call a divorce attorney. If you have sought the advice of an experienced divorce attorney, you will learn that the things you need to do BEFORE shouting the words “I WANT A DIVORCE,” are:

1.

Talk to an attorney who specializes in family law. The attorney will give you information specific to your particular situation. You will learn if you are entitled to spousal support, what assets are considered marital, how they will be divided, and if there are circumstances that would affect either party’s right to custody of the children.

2.

Consider the children. If you go to court, equally shared custody is the preferred decision in most circumstances. A child’s best interest is served by scheduling the children to spend as much time as possible with each parent. Plan how you can have an amicable discussion with your spouse in the future, once you have announced your intentions, that will accommodate the best interests of the children. Judith M. Daly is a North Carolina State Bar Certified Family Law Specialist. For more information, contact her at Daly Family Law at 704-878-2365.

3.

Keep your plans private. Change the password on your e-mail and other computer accounts. Stop posting your personal life activities on Facebook. Get a post office box or an alternative mailing address.

4.

Protect your financial investment in the marriage. You are most likely entitled to a fifty percent share of all marital assets. Make copies of all financial documents available to you. Take photographs of furniture, collectibles, antique cars, artwork, jewelry, or any other personal property of value. 20

IREDELL LIVING • JUNE 2018

Just prior to leaving or announcing your plans, move half of the cash in the bank into an account in your own separate name.

5.

Plan your future financial position. Create a budget of your anticipated income and expenses. Your attorney will have advised you if spousal support is available to you. If you are not employed, start planning a job search. Get a credit card issued in your own separate name. Save money, if able.

6.

Find emotional support. Anyone who is willing to listen to you vent your emotions, who helps you to assess your choices, and who makes suggestions to assist you plan your future can be helpful. It could be a counselor, a sibling, a neighbor, or a long-time friend.

7.

Once you have everything lined up, have a discussion with your spouse, letting them know that the marriage is not working, has not been working for quite awhile, and you would like to sit down with them and discuss the terms of a separation agreement. Now you are ready to retain your divorce attorney. DIY Projects–A Must for

Today’s Weddings

By Kathy Wheeler | Photos by Nicole Huffman Photography

Wedding planning has taken on a whole new dimension these days. Couples want less tradition and more of a fun vibe, using very different locations. Preparing unique venues for a wedding is a daunting and expensive task, and families are getting creative with DIY projects to customize these blank slates. My sister Jean and I did just that this past fall for her son’s wedding. Will and his lovely fiancé, Liz, got married at Overlook Barn in Banner Elk, North Carolina last September. Jean and I were excited to offer our creative services to transform the grounds for the ceremony and the barn for the reception. We started planning a year in advance, looking for materials, scouring Pinterest posts, getting approval from the couple, and creating projects. Jean is a decorator and seamstress by trade, and I am a graphic designer and crafter. Apart from our skills, we are also crazy enough to do anything! No idea was off the table, plus, we had help from our husbands when we needed it. Jean wanted to set the tables with antique china on wooden chargers. Not a big deal, right? Wrong! We only needed 175 place settings! The china wasn’t a problem; she had collected the pattern for years and borrowed some from her church. However, it would be difficult to find 175 chargers in one place, and they were expensive. She searched her property for a tree that was just the right

diameter. With tape measure in hand and her husband with a chain saw not far behind, they found the perfect tree, cut it down into logs, and hauled it to a local sawmill to be sliced. Each slice had to be cured so it wouldn’t warp. It was a crazy, long process! Nevertheless, they achieved the desired look for thousands of dollars less than the cost of purchasing the items. The couple hired a florist to create the bouquets and the vine down the center of the wedding party table. Jean went to a local farmer’s market vendor and ordered a dozen bouquets of dahlias and other flowers and greenery to be picked up the day before the wedding. The bouquets were used for the centerpieces at the rehearsal dinner, and with help from family and friends, she used the bouquets to create arrangements to go with the lantern centerpieces for the reception. She dressed the tables with cloths she made using Belgian linen. I created custom invitations for the wedding and rehearsal dinner, and built the screen door arbor with closet doors and wood that I found at a local Restore. Transport was a concern, so the arbor was designed to break down into three pieces. The vine decorating the arbor was from a Carolina jasmine that grew up my chimney. The sidewalk chalkboard sign was made from an old vanity mirror I picked up for $10. I created the photo booth backdrop by making oversized flowers from white cardstock and Velcroing them to fabric after I arrived. The chalkboard signs were customized templates purchased on Etsy, printed and mounted onto a thin board, and I handmade about 75 silk and linen pumpkins to scatter around the barn.

All of these projects were a lot of work, but so worth the effort to help Liz and Will achieve their perfect day. You can’t always find exactly what you are looking for in the quantity you need for a wedding, but don’t despair; chances are you have a friend or relative who has the ability to make what you want. If they are willing to offer their skills, let them! They can save you a lot of money, give you the custom items you want, and relieve some of the stress from your big day!

I A WORD FROM

Juneteenth Celebration

David Bradley President and CEO Greater Statesville Chamber of Commerce

sometimes challenge myself to use only one word to describe something of great importance to me. How would you describe the United States of America in one word? For many, including myself, the word is “freedom.” Many of our forefathers fought for this unalienable right during the American Revolutionary War. Sadly, our country had to go through another internal battle 90 years later to make sure that freedom was available to all our citizens who, as Abraham Lincoln proclaimed, “…are created equal.” On January 31, 1865, Congress passed the 13th Amendment that abolished slavery in these great states. For states to ratify, or formally approve, this Constitutional addition would take nearly eleven months. On April 9, 1865, General Robert E. Lee surrendered the last major Confederate army to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Courthouse. Getting news to the far reaches of the country proved to be difficult. On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger proclaimed in Galveston, Texas, that “…all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor.” The following year, numerous freedmen celebrated their freedom with the first celebration of Juneteenth. This year marks the 18th consecutive year of the Juneteenth celebration in Statesville. Seifullah El-amin, noted, “This day is so very important to me. Juneteenth celebrates TOTAL freedom from slavery. Nothing can compare to that day when the chains were cut free.” Thanks to growing community support, the Juneteenth celebration of 2018 will

28

IREDELL LIVING • JUNE 2018

be three days of education, conversation, and festivities. June 14 at 7 p.m. JUNETEENTH EDUCATIONAL PANEL Shearer Hall, Mitchell Community College June 15 at 7 p.m. JUNETEENTH REENACTMENT Unity Building, 1145 Salisbury Road June 16, 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. JUNETEENTH CELEBRATION 500 S. Center Street, Statesville Our celebration will include entertainment, vendors, food, and much, much more. I can tell you that you can expect to walk away with a full belly of great food (I took home two incredible pound cakes last year), more pep in your step (Roy Daye and the Cookie Band will be featured on the main stage), and, MOST IMPORTANTLY, a brighter hope for what our community can be. Every year, Juneteenth is celebrated by all cultures nationwide as a reminder to never forget where we came from, and to commemorate the freedom of African Americans in our nation. We celebrate that all Americans are free, and the power of freedom can be extraordinary. This year, the Chamber celebrates Juneteenth. Despite forces that try to further segregate our society, we know that we will be a better, stronger, and more prosperous populace by becoming more inclusive. Thankfully, Juneteenth marks the day the literal chains were finally broken that shackled an important segment of the American populace. Together, we can continue to knock down the figurative walls that still get in our way.

A A WORD FROM

MSI Leadership

Kirk Ballard President and CEO Mooresville - South Iredell Chamber of Commerce 30

IREDELL IREDELL LIVING LIVING •• JUNE JUNE 2018 2018

n important part of community development is the development of new and young leaders. The leadership development classes at the Chamber of Commerce were started in 1995. MSI Leadership begins with orientation and team building sessions in September and monthly sessions continue through April. Valuable information and hands-on experiences are designed to enhance leadership potential, channel personal strengths, and cultivate interest in community service. Topics covered include economic development, government, human services, education, public speaking, and more. Leadership skills are modeled through interactive skill building time with experienced leaders during the eight-month program. Aspiring leaders are motivated to assume positions of greater responsibility in business, community organizations, and government. MSI Leadership graduates finish the program with an understanding of current and future needs in our community and opportunities to make a meaningful difference in addressing those needs. Since its inception, we have graduated 164 new business leaders. Each year, our participants find out how the community works together to meet the needs of everyone. Some of the projects and ideas that have come from the program include: development of the HealthReach Community Clinic and Mooresville YMCA, establishment of the MSI Leadership Foundation, creation of an annual Poverty Simulation

with the Christian Mission, and organizing a similar leadership program for the youth of the community called the MSI Junior Leadership Program. One of the first projects of MSI Leadership was development of the Junior Leadership Program that sought to build new leaders within the high schools in our area. Mooresville Senior High School, Lake Norman High School, and South Iredell High School students, as well as private schools in the community that are members of the Chamber, were part of building a program that has graduated 263 junior leaders since its inception in 1996. Each class is special. Months of learning culminate with a morning of caring where students get involved in the community. This year’s class was no exception. For example, area high school students spent a day at Food for Days. Food for Days, formerly Backpack Ministry of Mooresville, began in September 2010 as a program close to the heart of John Saunders and a support team from First Baptist Church of Mooresville. Feeding at-risk children in Iredell County is a sacred responsibility and fulfilling experience. This was a great way for future leaders to learn more about an organization that helps keep Mooresville-South Iredell moving forward. The Chamber would be glad to share more information about its leadership development opportunities. There is opportunity for leadership everywhere, and it can make all the difference!
