He taught you to ride a bike and gives you horrible relationship advice. He sang off-key in the car, embarrassing you in front of your friends. He loves you unconditionally and always has your back. Whether he is your biological father or your step dad, an uncle or other father figure, more than anything he will appreciate you thinking of him on Father’s Day. Father’s Day originated in Christianity, with Europeans celebrating St. Joseph’s feast day in March. It is celebrated in some form, on varying days, all over the world. In the United States, the holiday was reportedly suggested as a complement to Mother’s Day, years after moms were already getting their due. For more than a century, Father’s Day has been the third Sunday of June. So why do you subject yourself to that annual, last-minute scramble for the perfect gift? Maybe your dad has simple needs that don’t make for exciting gifts. 8

Or maybe he tells you that he doesn’t need anything at all, the least helpful of gift suggestions. Maybe his “hobbies” include watching ESPN, walking the dog, and yelling at the squirrels from his back deck—none of which require gift cards. The trick to being a good gift-giver is creativity. This does not mean Dad wants a homemade gift from his adult child; your finger-painting days are over. Use your imagination to come up with a unique gift idea. You know that your dad, grandfather, uncle, and all the other men in your life each have plenty of golf shirts, so think outside the big-box store. Instead, look for a magazine subscription supporting one of his activities or hobbies. If he holds the self-proclaimed title of Grill Master of the House, pick up an accessory to aid his endeavor, like a rotisserie spit, long-handled spatula, or fish basket. A couple of tickets to watch his favorite team in action would make your sports fan’s day.
If you are a hands-on person, jump in and give your dad some help around the house. If he is a project-starter, but not a project-finisher, this may be especially needed. You get the pleasure of spending time together, he gets to complete an unfinished task, and Mom will likely appreciate the closure. If there are outdoor projects to be done, work with your siblings or a team of friends to clean the gutters and spread mulch. If it is within your budget, consider hiring a handyman or landscaper as a seasonal gift to Dad, especially if his age or health prohibits him from getting odd jobs finished. The guy who always has a dad joke at the ready and doles out sage advice, whether you want it or not, deserves his own holiday. So honor your dad this Father’s Day…just not with another necktie.

Soiree isn’t a word we use often, but as I searched for the quintessential adjective to describe the events held at Heritage House, soiree just came to mind. Party, wedding, reunion, seminar, fundraiser, celebration, prom, gala, reception, meeting, fellowship, shower—even trade show and fashion show—enter the picture, and at Heritage House, it’s a beautiful picture, to be sure. 12

“I wanted to celebrate my life while I was still living it,” Nancy Hucks said with a smile. “I’ve lived in Mooresville all my life, so it was wonderful to invite folks over to Heritage House— people who are really special to me—135 of my dearest family and friends were treated to a 70th birthday party to remember! In a nutshell, the staff at Heritage House is at your service. Andrea Nicholson has been director and event coordinator at Heritage House since 2016, and I think she has the most fun job around. “The very first event held in the facility was the Lake Norman Shriner’s Christmas party in 2014. In 2016, Heritage House hosted 17 weddings and rang in 2017 with the first ever wedding held in Cavin-Cook’s nondenominational chapel,” Andrea said. “We can magically transform our 2,600-square foot banquet hall, with its high barrel vault ceiling and tall arched windows, into a threeyear-old’s Frozen themed birthday with a big castle cake, a costume character wedding attended by flashy action figures, or an elegant 50th wedding anniversary gala, just to name a few. Our staff is creative, helpful, and professional. The goal is always to have people feel like they are guests in someone’s home. My main role is to listen—to understand the client’s vision—and then do all that’s required to make their vision a reality.” Andrea works directly with clients from start to finish to create the right atmosphere. Her approach to party planning is fun and orga-
nized. From ideas about decorations, linens, tableware, and all an event’s unique needs, to sharing referrals for caterers, photographers, florists, DJs, and musicians, or helping design the layout for your event, Andrea makes sure the details are covered to suit your needs. “We’ve helped set up Whirlpool Corporation’s kitchen showroom, job fairs, and several amazing internationally themed parties,” Andrea said. Michael Roberts is the go-to expert on all things audio and video. “Our studio includes a custom-built computer and professional sound board. We can help create video presentations, personalized videos for weddings, anniversaries and parties, or professional presentations that accompany your meeting, trade show, or seminar,” Michael explained. “We have all the equipment you need, and we are always on-site to help during your event.” Multiple HD viewing screens allow everyone to enjoy the show. Video presentations greatly enhance an event, and with Michael’s hands-on support that is made possible.

Mike’s calling is building relationships, and you’ll see this over and over at Heritage House. It’s a feather in this community’s cap, a place like no other, and I encourage you to stop by to see it all for yourself. If Mike is right that “experience is everything,” then a visit is in order. As vice president of operations, Michael Cook, Jr.’s attention to detail says everything about the quality of the facility and its fine amenities. “Our clients love the catering kitchen,” Michael said. “Families can bring in their own food, an option not available at some event venues, or their caterer can provide table service or a buffet from the large serving window, very convenient to the event. Guests also appreciate the covered, drive through portico entrance, relaxing on the large stone patio that surrounds our fountain, and the ease of a one-floor facility. Kiawah Island, South Carolina A Unique Balance of Nature and Development

My family first vacationed on Kiawah Island in 1987. The road leading to the island went on and on. With two restless kids in the car, I thought we would never get there, but soon after arrival, that endless drive was forgotten.
All About Nature Kiawah’s villas are tucked into the natural forestry of the island. Most are so nestled into their surroundings you must be looking to notice them at all. This unique balance of nature and development is what visitors find endearing. Preserving the natural beauty of the island also provides a healthy habitat for the wildlife. Deer are often seen on the beach, and just a few years ago we saw our first bobcat. Along with the many migratory bird species, an occasional alligator can be spotted in or near a lagoon.
For water sports enthusiasts, rent or bring your kayak or paddle board. Guided boat and kayak tours are available, too.
The Beach The ten miles of wide, hard-packed sand are people and dog friendly. Most of the homes and villas are set back from the water behind extensive dunes to create a more tranquil beach setting. If you have always wanted to ride a horse on the beach, neighboring Seabrook Island has stables where you can arrange a guided beach ride.

Freshfields Village is just outside the gate. This quaint Americana village has a large grocery, many unique shops, and several excellent restaurants. The village green in the center of Freshfields is the setting for the farmers market and outdoor concerts during the summer.
Accommodations The Sanctuary, the only hotel inside the gate, offers luxury ocean front rooms and suites. There are private homes and villas from one to seven bedrooms available for rent, too.
Not for Everyone The island is more family oriented than touristy. You won’t find a huge number of clubs or an amusement park. If you want more of a city vibe, Charleston is just 25 miles away.
Exploring The island’s beauty can be viewed by different modes of transportation. One of the most popular ways of exploring is by bike. Park your car and ride a bike to everything, especially going to and from the beach. There are 30 miles of bike paths winding through the island. If you don’t have your own bike, it’s easy to rent one.
Shopping and Restaurants
Sports There are five acclaimed golf courses, including the famous Ocean Course that has hosted the Ryder Cup and the PGA Championships. Tennis courts are plentiful and Night Heron Park offers basketball, volleyball, soccer, and playground equipment.
For my family, Kiawah has always just felt right. Now, our kids take their families there. It is a four to fivehour drive for us, and that last road before the island doesn’t seem quite as long as it did the first time we drove it. The only thing I can say that I personally dislike about the island is, alas, when we must leave.

Town Of Mooresville: Free Family Summer Fun By Meredith Collins
The Town of Mooresville has loads of free family fun planned for the summer, right here in your own backyard. “There is so much going on in the downtown area and with the Town of Mooresville in general,” said Stephanie Crisco, venue operations manager for the Town of Mooresville. “We want to bring awareness to all the events happening right here at home.” Between the new Performing Arts Center, the recreation department and the library, citizens can choose from a wide variety of activities. The new Performing Arts Center at Mooresville High School will host a series of concerts this fall with nationally known artists and acts. “We are really excited to be working with the Mooresville Graded School district on the Mooresville Performing Arts Center,” Stephanie said. 18

“It has 1,600 seats and is state of the art. We want to give people options for arts and culture here in Mooresville.” The Mooresville Cultural and Recreation Department has lots of summer activities planned, including Music on Main, Farmer’s Markets, and summer camps. They are opening a new park and also utilizing their mobile recreation unit to bring fun wherever they go. Music on Main is the first Friday of every month from May through October at 6:30 p.m. The July 3 concert will be held at the Mooresville YMCA, but all others are at the Town Hall lawn, 413 N. Main Street, Mooresville. “We offer a variety of bands throughout the season, from 80’s rock to Motown, and beach to bluegrass,” said Allison Goode, special events
and marketing coordinator at Mooresville Cultural and Recreation Services. “People love coming out to have a good time. Most buy dinner from one of the food trucks on-site, and then the kids usually dance and play while the bands are entertaining!” The recreation department brings their mobile recreation unit with activities like chalk boards, cornhole boards, and giant Jenga. The Farmer’s Market is every Saturday, May-October from 8 a.m. until noon at Liberty Park in downtown Mooresville. Affordable, themed summer camps let students delve into interests like sports, Legos, drama, and writing to keep them engaged during the summer break.
The opening of the new Edgemore Park, with 13 tennis courts and a new playground, gives residents an opportunity to get active. The Mooresville Public Library has a full list of summer activities for all ages around the theme, Building a Better World. The summer program kicks off on June 3 with a day of activities at the library, including a family comedy juggling show and a Know-It-All Fair with fun topics, such as how to toss pizza
like a professional and beekeeping. Programs include a learn and play sensory story time for children who struggle with sensory integration challenges, a science focused study leading up to the solar eclipse, story times, and a variety of programs for all ages.

T understand the deep roots Iredell Memorial Hospital has To in Iredell County and beyond, ask The Birth Place’s program nurse Pam Speight. “I’m an Iredell baby, my late husband and sons were born here, lots of family and friends were born here,” said Speight. “For me, the hospital is like family.” Pam’s story is not unique. For many families, Iredell Memorial and Iredell Health System’s connections span generations. Now, IHS is planning for the future, while continuing to provide the compassionate care that our community deserves. Iredell Memorial Hospital For more than six decades, Iredell Health System has set the standard for quality healthcare in Iredell County, beginning in 1954 with IMH. This year, IMH is making upgrades to Radiology, the emergency department entrance and triage area, and the surgery suite to meet the needs of the community. IMH is a leader in cardiovascular care here in our community, where heart disease is the number one cause of death. The hospital was the first in Iredell to offer interventional care during the earliest stages of a heart attack. In 2018, we will see completion of the new Iredell Memorial Cardiovascular Center, which will centralize Iredell’s cardiovascular services. “This state-of-the art facility will house complete cardiovascular services and procedures in one convenient location,” said John Green, vice president of professional services and facility planning. “Our plan is to continue evaluating and incorporating new technologies so patients receive cutting-edge treatments close to home. Our Cardiovascular Center will be an asset to the community and the heart patients who need our care.” 24

pound ground beef cup chopped green onions teaspoon garlic powder teaspoon cayenne pepper tablespoons steak seasoning hamburger buns stick melted butter cup barbecue sauce tablespoon honey slices Borden Cheese American Singles slices thick bacon, cooked until crispy frozen onion rings slices tomato Fresh lettuce
Directions
Combine beef, green onions, garlic powder and cayenne pepper; form into four patties. Sprinkle both sides of each patty with steak seasoning. Cover and chill (Patties can be made several hours in advance). Brush buns with melted butter; set aside. In small bowl, mix barbecue sauce with honey; set aside. Heat grill to medium-high heat. Grill burgers to internal temperature of 160° F, about 4-6 minutes per side. Two minutes before burgers are finished, grill buns, butter-side down, until golden brown. Place cheese slices on burgers to melt.
Serve each burger on buttered bun topped with two slices bacon, two onion rings, honey barbecue sauce, lettuce and tomato.

If I were to ask, “What comes first, jobs or a community?” what would be your response? For the last several generations, we have lived using the model that jobs must always come first. When we are successful in luring a large manufacturer into the area with many jobs, people will MOVE to our community to work. As more people opt to live here, it boosts that attractiveness to drive more retail business, and the cycle keeps going. The lead driver, however, has typically been JOBS! JOBS! JOBS!. In recruiting those industries (many that relied on a workforce that used their hands to sew socks, hem shirts, drive a forklift, etc.) the business would narrow down a long list of possible communities where they might relocate, to three or four where they felt they could succeed. At that point, the conversation about industrial incentives would take on a more prominent role. Take a look at a map of this part of the Southeast, and you can see how communities, just like Statesville, have prospered due to successfully landing large industrial employers. For generations, available jobs drove community growth. With technological expansion, many of those advances have caused the demise of jobs requiring extraordinary manual dexterity, and recruiting industrial entities has begun to change. What businesses now need, in order
to be economically sustainable, is a technologically competent workforce. Incentives still have high importance, but an industry looking to relocate now requires a workforce that can help them meet their goals. In short, a primary driver for where a company moves is a community that has a large 25 to 45-year-old population. The Greater Statesville Chamber, Downtown Statesville Development Corporation, City of Statesville, and other community partners have been strategically working to build the infrastructure that will attract residential growth while hosting numerous events that create a sense of community and a better quality of life. A recent video in which we interviewed several 25 to 45-year-olds, primarily, showed them noting why Statesville was indeed an ideal spot for them to now call home. The video was seen by over 50,000 people in the greater Charlotte area. Our second video, focusing on the breadth of educational opportunities for young families, will be released next week. A key component in this work, make no mistake, is the growing cultural arts landscape. Theatre Statesville, Full Bloom Film Festival, the Art Crawls, Iredell Arts Council, Performing Arts Live, Piedmont HealthCare Friday after Five Concerts, and many other events are critical attractions for our valued 25 to 45-year-old populace. We are now beginning to see the fruits of our labor as residential, retail, and industrial growth all seem to be spiking together. The branding campaign we went through a couple of years ago is now bearing tangible fruit: Statesville– Where It All Comes Together.
