u o Y Year

A New A New for By Kathy Wheeler

The New Year is all about a fresh start. If you do nothing else this New Year, create a vision of what your life would look like if you had no limitations and could do anything you wanted to do. It may sound silly to think this way, because after all, no one’s life is perfect or truly balanced. We bounce around doing what needs to be done instead of what we want to do. So, you may be asking, “What is the point?” The point is we will keep doing the same thing without a vision! The point is to move toward what we want our lives to become, instead of remaining complacent with where we are. The vision itself will have you subconsciously making decisions to move toward it. With that image in mind, you can identify the changes you need to make and take steps to begin. But, without a vision of where you are going, you aren’t going to get very far. You are the CEO of your life. Just like any company, the decisions you make today affect your future. Your current happiness and success, or the lack thereof, are results of the decisions you have made in the past. It's up to you to steer your future toward what you want. January is the perfect time to start something new, reinvent yourself, and make those changes you have been thinking about but never took the time to implement. It could be something to do with your appearance, such as reducing wrinkles or getting a new hair style or wardrobe; living healthier by making better food choices, losing weight, exercising more, or reducing stress; or improving your finances. Maybe you want to save and invest more or start living on a budget and look for ways to cut expenses. You might want to travel or mark things off your bucket list. For some, it might be to downsize and simplify their lives. The list is as different as the individual, and each change requires time, energy, and research. Hopefully, you will find some articles in this issue to help you make those adjustments. Some people hate change and others thrive on it. Either way it can be stressful to make such large modifications to your life. Breaking it into smaller steps can help you implement your changes and reduce the stress that goes along with it. At Iredell Living Magazine, we wish you a year of good changes moving you toward a more happy and healthy future!

creative minds NAILED IT D.I.Y. STUDIO

Article and photo by Becky Bergman

It’s no secret that regular time-outs and tapping into creative outlets can help busy people refresh their focus and rejuvenate their attitude. For some executives, an artsy weekend break from the rigors of corporate life is all that’s needed for renewed inspiration and motivation. After a successful business career and time spent working with nonprofits, Melinda Dutcher needed a break and a change of scenery. The Mooresville resident traded in her executive office, suit, and briefcase for an art studio, crafty apron, and paint brushes. Last July, Melinda and her husband, Bob Kinser, opened Nailed It D.I.Y. Studio on Main Street in downtown Mooresville. The business is part of a small, Fort Mill, South Carolina franchise. “Nailed It fits my personality perfectly—I’m fairly creative, I love to make things with my hands, and I love interior design,” said Melinda. “Besides crafts and decorating, my bigger love is helping people, even just a couple hours at a time, which, coincidentally, is the typical Nailed It project time. I chose Nailed It because it’s small and local, and their designs matched my taste. After meeting the team at corporate, I knew we had a good personality match, as well.” South Carolina friends Misty Grant and Shannon Evans launched Nailed It D.I.Y. Studios in 2014 to help wanna-be crafters turn their Pinterest-inspired designs 10

Libby Allison takes a break from her job to enjoy a day of crafting with her daughter. into professional quality crafts worthy of showing off. The studio guides its customers in creating beautiful décor pieces for the home. The company prides itself on developing projects and techniques that are not easily accessible via the Internet. From classic to modern and everything in between, the handmade pieces make great one-of-a-kind home accessories and personalized gifts. Misty and Shannon have built a doit-yourself craft business that teaches women to use tools and learn skills they can apply outside the studio. No experience is necessary, and the studio provides all the instruction and materials. The studio can even help with custom designs, stencils, and more. Nailed It now has locations in Fort Mill, Rock Hill, Moores-

ville, and Hickory. While reservations are encouraged, they are not required. “You select the type of project you want to do online, or you can come in during open studio and choose a project,” Melinda continued. “We have open studio Thursday through Sunday, which is by far our busiest day of the week. Sometimes we’ll do more than 20 projects on a single Sunday. Fridays are popular date nights and ladies’ night out. There’s always something going on, which is great.” Mooresville’s Main Street store caters mostly to women and kids. The art studio hosts summer camps, mommy-andme dates, bachelorette and bridal parties, and baby showers.

ReShape is the perfect name for one of Mooresville’s premier health, antiaging, and beauty facilities. ReShape has two meanings, each vital to the spa’s mission and outlook. First, ReShape refers to reshaping our bodies and lives. The second meaning is its overarching mission to reshape modern medicine. In combination, this dual focus enables the healthcare providers at ReShape to work with each client as a whole person, addressing health, mind-body, beauty, and anti-aging. ReShape was started by Dr. Anthony Macasieb in the fall of 2017. Dr. Macasieb had specific reasons for expanding his internal medicine practice of over 25 years to include ReShape and all the possibili-

ties and alternatives he could offer our community and his current patients. “I felt that with the mandate of electronic medical records, I was spending more time viewing my iPad screen than engaging in the human side of each patient,” he explained. Dr. Macasieb has taken a different approach to patient care in recent years by allowing ample time to acquaint himself with each patient as a human being, getting to know them and understand their concerns, and beginning to bring mind and body together in his approach to their good health. He continues to practice internal medicine in his private practice, Trinity Healthcare, located in the same building, but he views his work at ReShape as “…a new phase in my medical career. I still prescribe medications when appropriate, but I explain and offer alternatives when I believe there will be good benefits and the desired outcome for patients.” BODY, MIND & SPIRIT When we look our best, we feel our best…when our bodies are healthy, we look AND feel our best. It’s the nature of the human experience. Reshape is an alternative to the traditional methods of treating patients by adding a closer examination of each patient’s nutritional and hormonal balances and mind-body status. Many options are available to help us achieve optimum health, beauty, outlook, and wellbeing:

me utilize medications better.” Heather is a nurse practitioner at ReShape and Trinity Healthcare. She explained that IV nutrition provides a direct access to the circulatory system by bypassing the GI tract, resulting in higher rates of absorption. This therapy is tailored to each individual’s specific needs and is effective in dehydration, boosting immunity, fatigue, chronic stress, fibromyalgia, jet lag, hangover symptoms, arthritis, headaches, preand post-surgical enhanced healing, and many other conditions. Cancer patients may benefit from high dose vitamin C. Platelet Rich Plasma is a prescriptionfree therapy that utilizes your own concentrated blood plasma and its antiinflammatory properties for relief of pain, fatigue, and arthritis, as well as other conditions. Professional athletes use PRP injections to heal sports injuries. Another use of PRP is treating sexual dysfunction and sexual enhancement for men and women. Therapies that address sexual issues are the P-Shot for men and the O-Shot for women. These shots can have

almost instantaneous results—another alternative therapy for stress, depression, and low self-esteem. Also, PRP is used in aesthetic treatments such as Vampire Facelifts, microneedling, and hair restoration. Bioidentical Hormone Replacement restores normal hormone levels and reduces uncomfortable symptoms of imbalance, such as andropause, menopause, and thyroid or adrenal fatigue. Co-owner Wendy Macasieb explained that customized treatments with bioidentical hormones (derived from naturally occurring sources and structurally the same as our own hormones) can also help with memory loss, anti-aging, depression, cramps, headaches, hair loss, and erectile dysfunction—so, not just for women!

Dr. Anthony Macasieb

IV Vitamin Therapy supports good health, rejuvenates, and energizes. It is an excellent way to deliver nutrients and other necessary biological components in a controlled manner. “I know my allergies improve when I get a boost from an intravenous vitamin treatment,” Heather Gonzalez told me. “If I feel like I’m getting sick, I’ll use IV vitamin therapy to keep things from getting worse, and, it helps IREDELL LIVING • JANUARY 2019

Medical Weight Loss Programs at ReShape—medically supervised, scientifically founded, and customized for each patient— are designed to rev up your metabolism while instilling new behaviors, habits, and lifestyle changes that will help you take weight off and keep it off. “We want to bring balance to your life and relationship with your weight,” Heather said, “and we work individually with each patient to understand all that is needed to be successful. Injections or medications can sometimes help jump-start your weight loss.” BEAUTY AND HEALTH Tamara Pysz recently gave me a dermaplane facial. I have to say, it was a moment of me-time that I savored in a very hectic week. “Our services, whether it’s weight loss, skin care, or aesthetic procedures fit into that mind, body, spirit model. You know, when we look better, of course you feel better,” Tamara shared. “Some people think these services are only for women of a certain age, so they’ll look younger, but I say, for men and women, it’s never too soon to start taking care of yourself and your skin so you’ll look and feel better now and as you age. Of course, I believe that daily sunscreen, proper nutrition, and water intake are vital for healthy skin. After that, we can help improve your looks with many options in aesthetic services.” 14

In addition to several types of facials, ReShape offers non-surgical Vampire Facelifts, Botox, injectables and fillers, microneedling, radio frequency skin tightening and body contouring, microdermabrasion, peels, acne treatment, laser hair removal, waxing, and more. Each treatment addresses specific beauty and aging concerns. Recommendations are made after consultation with the aesthetician, so she knows exactly what your personal health, beauty, and anti-aging goals are. Having a professional listen to your concerns and suggest the right plan is important to getting you where you want to be. Spa-quality skin care products by Pevonia are available, and Tamara will make sure you’re using the right products and following the proper regimen for your unique skin type to gain or maintain a more youthful, refreshed look. Tamara’s husband, Brian Pysz, is very active in many aspects of ReShape. “I believe that Dr. Macasieb’s view on healthcare is the vision of the future,” he told me. Brian and Tamara own TemperaturePro Carolinas - Lake Norman, a local heating and cooling company in Mooresville.

A HEALTHY ALTERNATIVE “I have the best of the best working here,” Dr. Macasieb told me. “Each of us takes our work seriously, because it can have a profound impact in our clients’ lives. For the same reason, we strive to keep our prices competitive and fair—wellness and beauty should be affordable. Treating the whole person is very important to me, and I invite you to get in touch, so we can get to know each other and can help you connect mind and body in better health.” For men and women who want to improve their health, their looks, and their life, the ReShape team can help you get started. Tips To Accomplish Your

By Lauren Davidson

It’s that time of year. The one where gym membership rates skyrocket, and everyone is suddenly very committed to eating more vegetables, exercising more, and swearing off the delicious carbs they’ve been consuming from Thanksgiving to Christmas. While we all may have good intentions, there’s a reason that January 17 has been recognized to be Ditch Your New Year's Resolution Day—it’s because it takes more than good intentions to make a resolution stick. Forming good habits shouldn’t only be in repentance from all those Christmas cookies. It’s more about a longstanding commitment to a lifestyle change. According to the research, good things take time. So if you’re in it for the long haul, I’ve compiled some tips so that you don’t have to. Slow and steady wins the race. Forbes recommends setting realistic goals and holding yourself accountable, even through monetary means. Says Raul Villacis of The Next Level Experience, “The one reason why people don't stick to new-year resolutions is that there are very little tangible consequences if they don't follow through. Most people are 16

IREDELL LIVING • JANUARY 2019

not driven by pleasure, they are driven by pain. So create a consequence that hurts. Put a monetary consequence every 30 days if you don't follow through. And increase it or decrease it as time goes by. Find your pain point.” 21 days is not enough. Psychology Today has recently debunked the myth that habits take a total of 21 days to form. “According to a recent study, a daily action like eating fruit at lunch or running for fifteen minutes took an average of sixty-six days to become as much of a habit as it would ever become.” This ties in with American Psychological Association’s findings that it takes time to make lasting changes. We all know that a healthy diet and exercise are the only ways to lose weight and keep it off, but many of us are willing to undergo crash diets or even worse, diet pills. When the weight inevitably comes back, it’s easy to find yourself in a bad cycle. Sometimes the simplest answer is the right one. It may not be easy, but in the long run, it’s the only way to keep your habit strong: by choosing day after day to take steps in the right direction.

© iStockphoto.com | marekuliasz

Be SMART about your resolution. The Washington Post cites sociologist Christine Whelan’s research that indicates “the best way to make a resolution, stick with it, and change is a system called SMART. The resolution needs to be: Specific Measurable There’s a Reward for sticking to it And progress is Trackable.” The Post also notes that “One of the best change strategies is to automate, so the new behavior becomes a habit and you don’t even have to think about it. BJ Fogg, who researches behavior at Stanford, has come up with what he calls Tiny Habits. One of his famous resolutions was every time he went to the bathroom, he did three pushups. He automated the habit. So, instead of going to the gym for an hour, he did 30 push-ups a day, getting the benefit of a workout without having to think about it.” Again, repetition and recognizing that you’re human and sticking with it anyway seem to be the keys to success when setting a new resolution. Good luck this year!

Statesville Civic Center’s Annual S T A T E S V I L L E

Bridal Expo By Meredith Collins

The Statesville Bridal Expo is the one stop shop for all things wedding. Instead of spending a lot of time researching vendors, stop by and see over 60 wedding specialists all at once. Bring your fiancé, mom, bridesmaids, and other family along, too—make it a special day planning your upcoming wedding together. Plus, you can win cash prizes!

The format will be similar to previous years. Local event partners include Events Unlimited, Johnson Greenhouse, DJ SuperFly, and The Sharpe House. “This event is done with the participation of a lot of different local wedding vendors in Statesville,” Amye said. “It’s a group event and one of the biggest events of the year for the Statesville Civic Center.”

This year’s event is Sunday, February 17, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. This is the 19th year for the annual expo. “This is such a fun event,” Amye Burks, marketing and event coordinator at the Statesville Civic Center, said. “A special part of being engaged is getting to go to the bridal expo and have that experience together.”

Organizers are planning for around 1,000 to 2,000 total attendees. During the expo, one side of the Statesville Civic Center is transformed into a wedding venue with a runway, while the other side is filled with vendor booths. Vendors will include caterers, videographers, DJs, travel agents, photographers, hair and makeup artists, and florists.

18

IREDELL LIVING • JANUARY 2019

Vendors donate substantial prizes that are given away throughout the afternoon event. Event sponsor, Holiday Inn Express of Statesville, donates the cash grand prize of $750 and the runner up prize of $250. These are awarded in a drawing for two audience members at the end of the runway show. “Our vendors really come together to make the show exceptionally beautiful,” Amye said. “They knock themselves out

creating their booths, and it’s just amazing to see how they transform the civic center.” Amye says she’s gotten great feedback from vendors, and the Civic Center usually gets several bookings during the show. Couples should be sure to like the Statesville Bridal Expo Facebook page for tips and trends and to get lots of vendor and prize info in advance. Attendees do not have to pre-register or pre-pay. Tickets are $5 per person. Grooms get in free with their brides.

The Statesville Bridal Expo is one of the largest events hosted by the Civic Center itself. The rest of the year all types of other events are held there. “We have rooms available for 10 people all the way up to 600 and everything in between,” Amye said. “A lot of people don’t know we have small spaces for events like family reunions, birthday parties, and baby showers. We set up all the tables and chairs, so all you have to do is bring your decorations—we’ll break down afterward. It makes it a lot simpler, so you can focus on your guests and enjoying yourself!”

Now Open In Denver, NC

Larger events include weddings, fundraisers, meetings, concerts, and conferences. “The Civic Center was developed as a place where everybody could have special events and make memories,” Amye said. “We want to be accessible, affordable, and accommodating.”

Improve Your

ZZZs By J.C. Summerford

© iStockphoto.com | MilanMarkovic

Do you flop around like a freshly caught trout, howl like an industrial wood chipper, or pass out like a paralytic zombie? We’re talking about sleep, of course. And no matter your personal style, snoozing is essential to your mental and physical health. Sleep isn’t a passive physical state during which we simply recuperate from the day’s stresses. Our brains are more active during sleep than when we’re awake, cycling through complex electrical and chemical patterns that repair cells and re-set bodily systems. Beyond feelings of tiredness and lethargy, improper sleep can lead to serious health issues such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and psychiatric disorders. Although there is no right amount, most experts recommend that adults get 7-10 hours of quality sleep every night. About a third of Americans experience disrupted or inadequate sleep, but there are plenty of things you can try to improve your ZZZs, no matter the cause. STRESS Stress often forms a feedback loop. You’re too stressed to sleep soundly, then the lack of sleep brings on exhaustion, muscle aches, headaches, heart palpitations—which all make it tougher to sleep. Night time rituals such as deep breathing, a warm bath, reading a calm20

IREDELL LIVING • JANUARY 2019

ing book or sipping caffeine-free tea or milk can go a long way to promoting world-class sleep. Exercising regularly (a few hours before bed) and maintaining a consistent schedule are also good ideas. ENVIRONMENT A peaceful, quiet bedroom is essential to a great night’s slumber. Make sure the temperature is just right—not too hot or cool. Decorate the room with pastels or neutral colors and choose a mattress and pillow combination that suits your sleep preferences and body type. Using mentally stimulating cell phones, TVs, video games, and tablets just before bedtime can cause serious sleep deficiency. This goes for both adults and children, so enforce a digital curfew for the entire family at least an hour before you retire. FOOD AND DRINK Most people know that coffee and alcohol have a negative impact on sleep, but soda can be equally detrimental. Sodas contain caffeine and sweeteners which increase brain activity, and their carbonation contributes to heartburn. It goes without saying that drinking lots of any liquid just before bed often will bring on that annoying middle-of-the-night trip to the loo.

SNORING Snoring has a number of causes: obesity, excessive alcohol, nasal or airway obstructions, and sleep apnea. Snoring’s effects are both physical and psychological—any couple dealing with it can attest to that. Besides sturdy earplugs, your doctor may recommend lifestyle changes, a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine, or even surgery. INSOMNIA We toss the word insomnia around like a throw pillow, but it’s actually a complex medical condition. Only 10 percent of people have true insomnia, which consists of having trouble falling or staying asleep, persistent low energy, and moodiness. It’s no surprise that insomniacs experience relationship and work problems and are more accidentprone. If you’re not sleeping well for at least three nights per week, it’s time to see a doctor. In conclusion, if you’re not sleeping well for any reason, don’t ignore the problem. With a little effort, you can recover the ability to sleep like a baby. And don’t be jealous of your little one for his afternoon nappy time. Even brief sleep sprints can re-energize body and spirit. Grab that elusive siesta whenever you can!

A Holistic Approach to Weight Loss By Erica Batten | Photos by Phil Cavali Photography

Kelly Cram Right–Kelly and her husband Brian.

Determined to lose weight this year? You’re not alone. Currently about 70 percent of Americans are overweight or obese, and that number is rising. So is the number of diet and exercise programs. “Why, if we have enough information and resources available, are we not seeing a difference? Instead, there is a growing number of overweight and obese people in the population,” Kelly Cram, owner and lead health coach at Hope Wellness in Mooresville, said. “The current model of care is not working.” Cram, a.k.a. Coach Kelly, has been studying nutrition and health for almost 15 years. She has successfully applied what she’s learned to herself, her family, and a growing community of people who are similarly concerned about pursuing a lifestyle of wellness. What sets Hope Wellness apart is its three-pronged approach to weight loss. First, clients must be assessed holistically. This means looking at factors going all 24

the way back to gestation and infancy: your mother’s diet and lifestyle choices while she was pregnant, details about your birth, whether you were breastfed, how foods were introduced, whether antibiotics were used. All of these details matter, because they affect the unique population of gut bacteria responsible for digestion and nutrient absorption, waste elimination, even mood. Only then can the conversation turn to your current diet, medications, and other lifestyle factors. Even emotions, such as fear, anger, and anxiety, can affect health. “For every time your brain communicates with your gut, you get nine times as much communication back to your brain,” Cram said. “We’re not focused on food alone.”

with beneficial bacteria. This process may involve getting rid of an overgrowth of harmful bacteria or yeast, addressing major sources of toxins, and avoiding foods that cause inflammation. Then the gut can properly absorb nutrients from food. A key component of this step is monitoring. Clients come to Hope Wellness regularly to discuss not only what they’re eating, but also waste elimination and emotions. Cram has clients keep a Food—Mood—Poop journal, logging what they ate, their emotional state, and bowel movements. The clinic’s approach acknowledges that habits take a long time to form—Coach Kelly said 122 days, in fact. “For a program to work, it has to be structured, guided, and monitored,” Cram said. In the last step, clients must commit to maintaining health by continuing to choose clean foods, avoid environmental toxins, and address emotional issues.

Only about three percent of the overweight population is willing to do what it takes, Cram said. But she’s out to change that, too. She’s building a community of teachers, doctors, parents—people from all walks of life—who will support each other in a holistic approach to healing. The next step after the assessment phase “How are we going to make a difference is developing a personalized, structured in the numbers if we don’t do it in complan to address systemic imbalances. munity?” Cram asked. “When you stick Coach Kelly likens it to gardening: to suc- with like-minded people, things happen.” cessfully grow vegetables, you must make sure the soil is healthy and free of harm- In other words, if you’re determined ful toxins. ball through the hoop. A score for the team and a win for the 65-year-old family man and the kids he coaches. It’s all just a normal day of fun for this wheelchair basketball legend. Kiley, who devotes countless hours to coaching varsity basketball and hosting annual basketball events, developed a love for the sport while growing up in Costa Mesa, California. He practiced from sunrise to sunset on the hoop his dad hung from the garage roof—or on any outdoor court he could walk to. Kiley says he spent every waking moment—or what seemed like it—practicing and daydreaming about playing at UCLA or professionally with the Lakers. Kiley played basketball in high school in Orange County, where some colleges took notice of his game and his strong leadership skills. However, an inner tubing accident in the Southern California mountains at Big Bear changed Kiley’s plans. The devastating accident left Kiley paralyzed and unable to play basketball like he hoped. It took months for Kiley to accept that he would not play basketball on his feet.

One day, National Wheelchair Basketball Association legend and hall of famer Ed Owen visited Kiley in the hospital. Initially he was reluctant to think about wheelchair basketball. When he saw Owen play on an outdoor hospital court, he was hooked. It was a defining moment that helped save—and change—his life. Within two years of his accident, Kiley participated in his first Paralympics on the U.S. National Team. He won gold. He went on to Final Fours and national championships. Kiley, who earned his Therapeutic Recreation degree in Sacramento, met his wife soon after. The couple had two kids, Justin and Danielle, and today they are grandparents to three children. “I was a proud father, and I felt validated in the sports world, not just in the realm of disabled athletes,” said Kiley. What would follow over the years? Playing for the USA in four different decades, winning nine Paralympic gold medals, two silvers, and two bronze in three different sports—basketball, track, and alpine skiing. Kiley, who once worried he would never be able to have kids, was also the first wheelchair athlete to appear in Sports Illustrated and to his joy, he was pictured with his children Justin

and Danielle. “I am still very proud of that. I have a painting of that very proud, ground-breaking moment in my life hanging over my fireplace.” Over the years, Kiley has given back to the sport he loves so dearly. He negotiated the first official partnership with the NBA and launched the NBA/NWBA Wheelchair Basketball All-Star Game. Today, Kiley, who moved to North Carolina with his wife in 1996, is busy coaching high school, varsityaged kids with the Charlotte Rollin’ Hornets under Abilities Unlimited, a charitable organization he supports. And like Kiley, they are perfecting their game from their wheelchairs. An advocate for youth and women athletes, Kiley has spent the past 16 years coordinating his annual event, DK3, a national wheelchair

basketball tournament that attracts more than 50 players each year. It is named for Dave Kiley (DK) and the 3x3 is a style of basketball played three a side on one hoop. “The DK3 is an event that connects the best players and high-profile athletes from around the U.S. and brings them together to play a great game of basketball,” said Kiley. For the past two years, Kiley has hosted this event at the Lowe’s YMCA in Mooresville. “It’s been so great to hold it here in my town that I love so much in a place that supports me and what I do.” In 2019, he will travel to Venice Beach in California where the annual tournament will be held. “We are excited about this year’s tournament.” Dave Kiley accepting the Hometown Hero Award from the Charlotte Hornets and Michael Jordan.
