Welcome to the December issue. By now you've pulled out your sweaters and wool socks and may even have a steamy mug of hot cocoa in hand. Maybe you've researched your trusty Farmer's Almanac to check on winter weather predictions in this area. Hopefully you've tied a bow on your last gift and are now ready to settle in to enjoy the season. Either way, I hope you find as much exhilaration and merriment as I do during this most wonderful time of year! I'm looking forward to pulling out that old box of decorations full of memories from Christmas past and seeing the glow of bulbs stringing from trees and houses and city sidewalks. I'm ready for choirs singing of peace and energetic kids playing in snow. I'm also ready to gather with those dearest to share tales and indulge in delicious recipes passed down through the generations from friends and relatives. ecember is a busy time of year. Tis the season for buying gifts, decorating, baking for family get-togethers and neighbors, gift wrapping and delivering. Whew! I get exhausted just thinking about all of it. If you intend on doing all of the above, then you should have started in November or earlier! Maybe it’s time to take a breather and simplify the holidays. After all, the season isn’t about all of the hustle and bustle, but rather about spending quality time with family and friends letting them know you love them and giving to those all around us who are in need. When it comes to gift giving, most of the people we know really don’t need anything other than maybe a day off! Instead of buying them something they may not use, or even like, why not plan a day trip or overnight trip somewhere relaxing? Maybe rent a cabin for a night and invite a group of friends and family to sit on the porch, take in the view, and enjoy lunch. Maybe plan a shopping trip where they can knock a few gifts off their list, followed by dinner–your treat. Or, buy tickets to a show that you would all enjoy. By planning an excursion for a group, you can mark all invited off your Christmas gift list while enjoying their company, which is more important than any gift you could wrap.

If you belong to a large family and are expected to bring gifts for everyone, make the suggestion that you draw names, or pool your money with others in the family to purchase parents and grandparents something that no one person could afford on their own, or just buy presents for the children. I bet everyone would be thankful for the break as well. Better yet, maybe you could skip gift buying and donate to a charity in their name instead. Part of the holiday season is about giving of your time and resources. So, in lieu of buying gifts for those who are already blessed with more than they need, maybe focus on giving to those less fortunate than ourselves.

If you love decorating, and I do, then enlist some help! This year my son has agreed to assist me. He couldn’t have given me a better gift. I get to spend time with him, enjoy the decorations after they are put up, and get them done much quicker than if I had done them by myself! You could do the same for whoever is hosting the family meal. Offer to show up early and help with the preparations, or help them decorate or clean. If you enjoy making handmade items or baking, do it with a friend who has similar interests. The holidays will take on a whole new meaning when you enjoy it with those you love instead of running around exhausting yourself trying to mark off a list!

These Organizations Need Your Help in 2019 By Becky Bergman

December is a great month for giving back to the community you live in. There are so many opportunities to share your resources, talents, and time in causes you care deeply about. Whether it’s helping your neighbors, dishing out meals at the soup kitchen, rescuing animals, or mentoring youth, there is something for everyone. Below is a list of six organizations that could use your assistance, talents, time, or donations. All of these welcome teens and adults, small groups, and families. Corporate teams are encouraged to serve together. Nurture your spirit for serving and make our community better—one person, one organization at a time. BAGS OF HOPE This nonprofit provides free food to students and their families. Volunteers deliver bags of food to schools. Backpacks are given discreetly to children on Fridays to help fill the weekend gaps when students don’t receive free or reduced meals at school. The group hosts packing parties to prepare an estimated 100 to 200 bags at a time. It’s a fun way to serve together with friends, church groups, office teams, and even total strangers. CAROLINA BIG HEARTS BIG BARKS This foster-based nonprofit organization started three years ago and is dedicated to saving large breed dogs in the greater Charlotte region. The atmosphere of this truly awesome shopping destination is peaceful…but in a very exciting way. Shoppers wander the wide aisles on a steady discovery expedition, searching for something very particular or something that spontaneously catches the eye. Either way, there’s something for every taste and style.

HANDCRAFTED TREASURES I met Matt Bishoff as he was setting up his new display, JMB Wood Works, near the main entrance. Matt is a designer and builder of custom furniture. And, I will tell you, his work is heirloom quality, beautiful furniture. “I’m a one-manshop—everything I make is touched by me,” Matt said with a smile. “If you don’t see what you want in my booth, I can design it and build it, so you can have just what you want.” Matt explained that he starts from rough cut lumber—oak, cherry, walnut, Sapele (a medium-priced African wood that resembles mahogany but with an iridescent quality) and other species, and then makes a sketch of the design. He can easily work from a photo or picture and can make just about any piece of furniture, but he especially likes to build chairs. “My favorite pieces I’ve made so far are the cherry dining chairs,” he said. “Chairs are harder to make, and I like that challenge. I also know that if I can make more complicated or curvy furniture, then I can handle the less complicated, straight designs. I’m pretty much selftaught—my only real formal training goes back to eighth grade shop class. So, my

credo is, if it doesn’t work, you learn from it, and try again. I’m more picky than my customers.” Your bedroom, living room, or dining room set, china cabinet or hutch, desk, bookshelves, and tables will be made to last, with real wood, not fiber board—unique, handmade antiquesto-be that you can hand down to your children…just talk with Matt. Main Street Antique Mall and Design Gallery was named Best Antique Store in 2018 by the Herald Citizen readership. Among the hundreds of Main Street booths, you can find just about any special treasure you want, and then some. During a tour, I fell in love with Folk Art Birdhouses, whimsical, Gothicstyle wooden birdhouses made with all sorts of old hardware and wooden embellishments. A can’t-find-anywhere-else booth filled with movie and TV show props is fascinating—a unique resource for local commercial and theatre productions. The ultimate in unusual antique lighting can be found at ‘lil Rusty’s booth. He makes lamps from his collection of metal plumbing and industrial hardware. They are one-of-a-kind beautiful. And the selections are just about

Rex Butler, the previous Main Street manager, quoted owner Michal Bay’s inspiration, “I never wanted this to be the biggest antique mall, I just want it to be the best.” WHAT’S IN STORE Main Street Antique Mall hosts about 469 booths in its 83,000 square feet space, not including the two adjacent restaurants, Alino Pizzeria, a five-star casual restaurant and the Barcelona Burger & Beer Garden—the “best burgers in town,” Rex said. These enterprises and expanding leased office space are under one roof in the former Burlington Industries mill. The 1893 original Mooresville Mill maintains the look and feel of a turn-of-the-century textile mill with spacious wood beam ceilings, brick walls, and floors that have carried decades of local industry. Main Street is the perfect setting for an astounding amount of antiques, collectibles, arts and crafts, designer finds, handmade foods, special events, and more. A LITTLE HISTORY “When this project first got going in 2014,” Rex told me, “the owner’s vision was to have an antique store. By inviting a wide variety of high quality traditional, contemporary, and eclectic vendors to join us, we’ve taken that business plan a step further and expanded to become a true vintage antiques, collectibles, and home décor and furnishings shopping destination that Mooresville can be proud of. Repurposing this beautiful historic building anchors our town’s already popular downtown shopping district.” There are several key components to the success of Main Street Antiques. First is the high quality and solid reputation of vendors who have their businesses in the Mall. Rex and manager, Mike Reed, have high standards for this unique retail experience. “Every booth has a different story,” Mike said. “Some are extensions of antique businesses in the region and collectors displaying and selling their treasures. Some booths are mom and pop enterprises or families looking to downsize or sell family treasures they have inherited. Some of our vendors are artists and craftsmen with original or handmade decorator items, clothing and accessories, or one-of-a-kind pieces that you won’t find anywhere else. Some offer home-canned jellies, and other delicious treats. In each case, we have a strict application process for approval with a very affordable, month-to-month lease.”

A COMMUNITY RESOURCE Other keys to the Mall’s success are the partnerships throughout our area that keep Main Street Antiques in the spotlight and part of the larger community. Three special areas are the Mooresville Museum Annex, the Mooresville Art Guild display, and The Venue. “David Whitlow at the Mooresville Museum felt that an annex display here at Main Street would be a great way to expose more people to the Museum’s historic exhibits and artifacts,” Mike explained as he showed me the large corner dedicated to Mooresville history. “We’re proud to have Cotton Ketchie’s desk, the original signs from McLean Supermarket and John Mack & Son, along with many artifacts from local businesses, institutions, and families. We have old photographs, documents, and, amazingly, the last original wooden street sign from town.” Jessica DeHart, president of Mooresville Arts, shares the work of local artists in their dedicated booth. “Mooresville Arts partnered with us last summer with Arts at the Mill, a three-day, nationally juried fine arts festival,” Mike told me. “We're planning to fill this space with more art in the future.” The Venue has a unique old-world charm that is perfect for special events, par-

ties, meetings, fundraisers, and exhibits. The setting of this spacious venue—with the look and feel, still, of the old mill’s history—makes a unique backdrop for a fabulous fashion show, a family reunion or party, trade show, conference, or a gala hosted by one of our local charities—it’s like no other venue around. “Earlier this year, SONY PlayStation launched a new product in The Venue,” Mike shared. A CLASSY DESTINATION Word spreads fast, and Main Street Antiques Mall has become a shopping destination of choice. “People come back time and again, because there’s something new all the time,” Rex explained. “People bring their out-of-town family and guests for a day of shopping, dining, and relaxing. And, if you haven’t visited the rose garden out front, you’re missing part of the beauty.” I recommend you put Main Street on your calendar now, while holiday shopping is upon us. There really is something here for everyone!

Make Time For

What you Love! By Lauren Davidson

Isn’t it funny how certain things stick in your memory? For instance, I was half listening to a radio show a few years ago while I was driving to work. The topic of that morning’s show was how to keep your marriage fresh. The featured expert was fed up with people complaining about being too busy to give their spouses the attention they craved. “People make all sorts of time when they are having affairs,” said the expert. “They sneak away during their lunch hour. They steal off to write romantic letters. They may be a CEO of a company, but they will make time for a lover. Treat your marriage like an affair.” I’m not sure why that sentiment stuck with me, but I’ve been applying it to my life for years; not necessarily in relation to my committed partnership, but mainly to my relationship with creativity. Let’s face it: day-to-day dreams can become dashed when living in the throes 16

IREDELL LIVING • DECEMBER 2018

of dropping the kids off, working on another hectic project, trying to keep sane. The last thing I want to do when I get home after a long day of putting out fires is to work on another project. You can bet that I don’t want to write. I don’t want to exercise. I certainly don’t want to take the time to cook a healthy meal. All I would really like to do is kick up my feet, put on some Netflix, and take a long nap. At the end of the day, I’m wiped out! There is no part of me that still has that passionate driving force that motivates my creativity. Besides, I usually have to do additional work, clean the house, and manage the daily upkeep that life requires, just as we all do. So, I make time during other parts of my day. Between meetings, on weekends, in the mornings. I fit in time for my creativity, which in turn acts as a stress reliever and actually helps me do

a better job at work. Last week, it wasn’t writing at all; sometimes it’s painting, sewing, trying out a new recipe. What matters is that I feel fulfilled afterwards; I get that old childhood feeling of having fun with my creativity. If you’re a parent, it’s something you can relive with your children. Sometimes, I choose to involve my partner. I’ll invite him to help me cook or I’ll bounce around story ideas with him. The point I’m trying to make is that when you are determined enough, you’ll find the time to do whatever it is that sparks the flame of joy in your heart. Is it gardening, woodworking? Whatever you love, it’s important not to let that go. Reclaim the joy! Whether it’s your relationship or me-time, make time for it. Sneak it in and make it a priority. Life is meant to be lived, after all. Find what makes you feel alive and treat it like an affair!

Peppermint Truffle Cookies 8 ½ 1 1 ½ 2 36

ounces bittersweet baking chocolate cup (1 stick) butter cup sugar, divided egg teaspoon McCormick Pure Peppermint Extract cups flour milk chocolate kiss-shaped candies, unwrapped

Directions

Heat oven to 350° F. In large, microwavable bowl, heat chocolate and butter on high 1-2 minutes, or until butter is melted. Let stand 10 minutes to cool slightly. Add ½ cup sugar, egg and peppermint extract. Beat with electric mixer on medium speed until well blended. Gradually beat in flour on low speed until well mixed. Shape dough into 1-inch balls. Press chocolate candy into center of each ball, forming dough around candy to enclose it. Roll in remaining sugar to coat. Place 1 inch apart on greased baking sheets. Bake 9-11 minutes, or until cookies are set. Cool on baking sheets 5 minutes. Remove to wire racks; cool completely.

12/3 cups flour 1 /3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 1½ teaspoons baking powder ¼ teaspoon salt ½ cup (1 stick) butter, softened 1¼ cups granulated sugar 2 eggs 1½ teaspoons red food color 1 teaspoon vanilla extract ½ cup confectioners’ sugar Nonstick cooking spray

Directions

In medium bowl, mix flour, cocoa powder, baking powder and salt; set aside. In large bowl, beat but-

ter and granulated sugar with electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy. Add eggs, food color and vanilla extract; mix well. Gradually beat in flour mixture on low speed until well mixed. Refrigerate 4 hours. Heat oven to 350° F. Shape dough into 1-inch balls. Roll in confectioners’ sugar to completely coat. Place 2 inches apart on baking sheets sprayed with nonstick cooking spray. Finding Purpose By Emily Buckley

Shakespeare once said, “Expectation is the root of all heartache.” In a world where news and social media are available every step we take, it’s easy to have high expectations and lose sight of what true happiness really means. We scroll through a timeline with update after update about fancy vacations, new cars, shopping trips, and achievements. Media gives us a Photoshopped, high definition, picture-perfect expectation of who we should be. There are statuses complaining about first-world problems, people wishing they could be this or be that. Constant exposure to this cycle can lead to rewiring of the brain causing us to think that the measure of happiness depends on what we have or the lack of problems we face. The interesting thing is, we would never know what happiness is if we don’t experience the opposing emotions of grief, anger, pain and fear. Joy would feel incredibly mediocre if it was all we knew and could process. Think about the pleasure of eating a home cooked 24

IREDELL LIVING • DECEMBER 2018

meal if you have been living off fast food and carry out for weeks. During that first savory bite, dopamine levels skyrocket. For someone who has learned to conquer the heavy weight of anxiety, the task of making new friends can become a riveting experience, whereas before, it was daunting and panic-inducing. It’s important to experience lows in order to realize when you hit the highs. And sometimes between the ups and downs and fleeting serenity, there’s a period where it feels as though life adds up to a lot of nothing. Restlessness and frustration can begin to surface. We forget that a pathway can consist of a long-stretch. There’s the waiting. The meanwhile. This is the in-between time where we reflect and grow from either spectrum. We must trust this process of delay. We can avoid an abundance of disappointing circumstances if we embrace uncertain moments with gratitude and contentment. Life will throw plenty of unexpected failures and victories our way. We must appreciate every stretch

of the road—it means we’re still alive for the journey! For me, true happiness consists of a meaningful life full of purpose. Material gain is temporary and can blind the eye to a purpose of substance. Developing intellect, skills, relationships, and character may take time, but they are the meaningful gain of substance you can use for a lifetime. Through these means, we can impact people and truly make a difference throughout a hurting world. We can spread the hope of surviving and thriving, because we know there is no need to give up during a hard time. You see, happiness isn’t everything. Because whether we find our purpose through heartache, ailments, hard work or misfortune, it’s only then that we can strongly feel results of real love, healing, achievements, and good fortune. And that, my friends, is the everything that counts.
