from the publisher Welcome to the August issue. “August rain: the best of the summer gone, and the new fall not yet born. The odd uneven time.” – Sylvia Plath August is summer’s last stand. Temperatures, still sizzling hot at noon, will soon surrender to cooler Carolina evenings, as they must. Many of us carry memories of fine vacations into fall, when work once again becomes our main priority. In homage to August, and to working women everywhere, we’re sharing several stories about dedicated, successful local business women. It’s the perfect month to begin our open-ended series, because August 26 is Women’s Equality Day, the day in 1920 when the woman’s suffrage movement won the right to vote. Today, more than 11 million women own businesses, generating almost $2 trillion in sales worldwide. In fact, studies show that businesses with women in top executive positions usually make more money than those with only male executives.* Women still face obstacles in the business world, such as cultural and gender bias, but those we spoke to have never let such negative issues stop them from enjoying tremendous success, and we congratulate each one of them. Also in August, many families are preparing to send children of all ages off to school, stocking up on everything from backpacks to new shoes to notebooks. But many of our youngest kids will enter a classroom for the very first time. It can be a scary experience for all concerned. Working parents must choose wheth4

er to home school their little ones, place them in daycare, or enroll them in preschool. It can be a daunting decision, so this month we aim to alleviate some of that anxiety with our article about choosing a preschool. Speaking of stress, we’ve got more advice, mostly for adults, about how to manage it. Because no matter your circumstances, stress can damage body and spirit if you allow it to continue long term. Meanwhile, there are still a few warm, muggy weeks to enjoy in August. End of Summer Bash is August 3rd in downtown Statesville. This free event features balloons, superhero and princess characters, and face painting. Concurrently, the Crossroad Classic Bicycle Race takes place downtown. This year, organizers have added a 5k running event, so bring lots of energy! On August 10th in Mooresville, Shades of Love LKN fundraiser promotes community diversity and accomplishments and recognizes our service men and women. Food, face painting, entertainment, and more are offered. Summer may be beating its inevitable retreat, but at the end of August we can all look forward to fall festivals and falling leaves. Until next month, thank you for reading Iredell Living magazine.

Women Caring for Women Bringing women together to care for other women is a powerful thing, and women choose female gynecologists and obstetricians for their healthcare specifically because they are women—and we love them because they are women! With a clear understanding that women are all different, but at the same time knowing that all women are special and deserve the finest health care, the team at Piedmont Healthcare’s Women’s Center are providers who take their job seriously, with a dash of fun thrown in. 10

YOU’RE HAVING A BABY “A lot of women want a less clinical environment when they labor and deliver,” said midwife Sybilla Howell, a new addition to the Women’s Center’s staff. “I love being able to work so closely with new mothers during pregnancy, labor, and delivery.” Sybilla and the Women’s Center’s physicians and nurses play a critical role in making having a baby safe and special. A partnership with Iredell Memorial Birth Place allows women to give birth in a home-like setting the way they want to. Everything about The Birth Place is designed to be pleasant, safe, and comfortable—the monitors are more comfortable, you can walk around, even shower, and each room has a large, private bath. Turn down the lights or open the shades. Enjoy your music, if you like. The rooms are peaceful with comfy furniture so your partner, family, or visitors can be with you, and the unit is fully secure, so no worries. New moms labor and deliver in their private rooms, but rest assured that all the modern equipment needed for your baby’s birth is at hand.

THE NEW LABOR POOL The Birth Place has acquired a new labor pool to help women be as comfortable as possible by spending labor in a tub filled with warm water. “We are very excited to offer this option,” Dr. Roshnara Singh told me. “It’s a comfort measure provided for more relaxed, less stressed labor—women can easily change positions. They relax physically and mentally, and water provides a sense of privacy, too, lessening inhibition and anxiety. There’s always a professional there with you throughout your labor in the pool.” INFORMING AND EMPOWERING WOMEN “There are many things that women and girls need to know about themselves, their health and wellbeing that they may not have learned at home or school or in their own experience,” Dr. Ariel Ansley shared. “The best care includes listening, sharing, and answering questions—any questions.” Dr. Ansley has been with The Women’s Center for about a year, and every day she strives to care for her

patients in this way. “The best part of this work is connecting to women long-term, year after year. I want young women to know that the decisions they make now will affect their entire life and that you can only make good decisions if you understand what’s what. Teens know they can talk with me about anything that’s on their mind, what’s going on in school, questions about sex, whatever. When I make that connection, when they trust that I understand, it can be very powerful.” The Women’s Center provides a continuum of healthcare throughout a woman’s life—from teens to seniors in their 90s. “Talking with my patients—grandmothers, mothers, and daughters—helping them stay healthy, and learning about their families are what I love,” Dr. Torres explained. “I know I’m using my skills and medical knowledge to make a real difference in my patients’ lives.” Rebekah McCarthy and Pam Monroe, nurse practitioners, do many of the same things as the physicians. “Every day is different, it keeps us on our toes,” Pam said. “There’s 12

some social work in what we do, guiding women through their lives, through pregnancy, breast feeding, or newborn care—sometimes we’re sitting in for Mom or Grandma who used to give this advice. Everyone on our team respects each woman we see; it’s the same whether we’re discussing contraception or doing a breast exam. For us, it’s about our patients’ good health.” MINIMALLY INVASIVE Dr. Margot Wacks joins The Women’s Center this month. Dr. Wacks is a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, with specialties in obstetrics and gynecology. She has completed all the training an MD receives, but with a more holistic edge. “I’m trained in gynecological robotic surgery,” Dr. Wacks said. “The benefits of this minimally invasive approach are quicker hospital discharge, less recovery time, and less medication needed.” Robotics allows for complex minimally invasive procedures with precision and accuracy. It is an alternative to some open surgeries. Dr. Wacks and Dr. Ansley can robotically treat gynecologic condi-

tions such as severe pelvic pain, endometriosis, fibroids, abnormal bleeding, pelvic organ prolapse, and cancer. Other minimally invasive, in-office procedures are convenient and less costly. Sonohysterography uses ultrasound to diagnose bleeding and find polyps, fibroids or scarring, and it can help determine a woman’s difficulty getting pregnant. It’s done in the office in about half an hour—more affordable than hospitalization. “In-office procedures like these are easy, convenient, with little to no down-time,” Dr. Torres explained. “With no general anesthesia, patients are back to family and work quickly.” Reversible, short- and long-term birth control methods are also prescribed: hormone-free or hormone releasing IUDs, patches, injections, vaginal rings, male and female condoms, spermicides, and oral contraceptives. At the Women’s Center, options are explored and fully explained, with the doctor’s recommendation based on each woman’s unique situation and medical history.

SURGICAL OPTIONS Sometimes a partial, total, or laparoscopic hysterectomy or other gynecological surgery is recommended. The Center’s physicians are experienced and skilled in these procedures. “A hospital stay is required, so whenever we can, we opt to use the least invasive method,” Dr. Singh explained. “A total laparoscopic hysterectomy requires just one to three hospital days. It’s done through just a few tiny abdominal incisions, and women get back to their regular activities in the shortest time. We help women find the right option for them. Our patients are like family, and we treat them that way.”

TOTAL CARE FOR WOMEN A full menu treating gynecologic concerns is offered: pre-conceptual, infertility and contraception counseling, annual exams, breast health, preventive screening, PMS, uncomfortable intercourse and libido, pelvic pain, heavy periods, STDs, menopause and hormone replacement, gynecologic and bladder surgery, in-office ablations, as well as genetic screening and diagnostic ultrasound.

Obstetric care addresses women’s reproductive health prenatally, during pregnancy, through childbirth and the postnatal period. Drs. Singh, Torres, Ansley, and Wacks, midwife Sybilla Howell, and two nurse practitioners, Pamela Monroe and Rebekah McCarthy, listen carefully and partner with patients in making vital decisions. Timely, comprehensive, and friendly customer service is supported by certified medical assistants and the entire office staff.

LOOKING GOOD = FEELING GOOD Women like CoolSculpting to help get rid of unwanted fat on the body. “For women who have tried everything and still have stubborn fat that just won’t go away, CoolSculpting is a non-invasive, FDA-cleared alternative to liposuction,” Dr. Singh said. “It’s an in-office, no anesthesia procedure that can eliminate, for good, fat in various places—from the chin to the knees and all in between: inner and outer thighs, arms, back, muffin tops. For many women this is the right way to go.” THE BEST WORK THERE IS Perhaps Dr. Ansley said it best: “There’s no other job that is 95% good, positive, and so rewarding.” If you have questions, please contact Piedmont Healthcare’s Women’s Center. Nothing better than a medical practice of women for women, with a dash of fun thrown in. HOW TO CHOOSE A PRESCHOOL By JC Summerford You’ve made the big decision: you’re sending your child to preschool. How do you choose the best one? There are several things to consider. First, the school should be located near your home or work so that it’s convenient to reach in case any issues, like illness, arise during the day. Once you’ve checked the references and credentials of several preschools near your home, arrange to take a tour of each one with your child. While there, ask lots of questions. Do the children seem happy? When you walk in the door, do you feel welcome and comfortable? Take note of whether the children are laughing, having fun, and seem genuinely happy to be 16

there. Menaka Land, owner and director of Hickory Montessori, (pictured) says the emotional wellbeing of children at this age is just as important as academics. After all, about 90% of a child’s brain develops from birth to age five. “During that time, we have those children in our hands,” she says. “It’s a big responsibility. We make sure we treat children with kindness, respect, and love—the most important thing, as far as I’m concerned.” Are children treated as individuals? Kids learn at different rates and have distinct personalities. Some like to draw

and build things, while others prefer to solve math problems. It’s essential that all children are nurtured according to their abilities. Kerry PossingerKeiper, principal of Chesterbrook Academy in Mooresville (pictured), says, “Lesson plans are uniquely developed according to the child’s needs. One of the children in the classroom may be able to count to ten, but another may only count to five. We want to make sure we’re doing everything we can to individualize learning based upon the child’s needs.”

Always ask about the food and snacks that are served. If your child has a special diet, ask whether the school can accommodate it. Chesterbrook provides an app for parents so that they can check the school’s menu. “You can see exactly what the children are eating every day and how much of each item your child is eating. Sometimes they may not eat all the broccoli, so the teacher always notes it.” “We’re not only focused on academic and social skills, but we also need to know how students eat, as well,” Land adds. “We are concerned with the whole child, not just certain parts. Well-balanced meals are important.” Is the setting clean and safe? Ask about security procedures. You want to know how the front door traffic is handled, how the school will contact you in case of emergency, and how often are toys and furniture cleaned. Possinger-Keiper suggests asking, “How many times a day are your toys cleaned and sanitized? Do you have a three-step procedure to clean your toys?” She would also check about carpet, surfaces, and bathroom cleaning.

What are the teachers and curriculum like? You want your child to receive excellent academics, but you don’t want her to feel stressed or over-worked. Great teachers create a positive, fun environment and are sensitive to each child’s needs. Preschools are required by law to adhere to specific child-to-teacher ratios so that teachers are not overburdened and can give proper attention to all students. “I would observe the classroom and watch the interactions with children,” Land advises. “Ask whether the teachers have a degree, if they are certified, and how long they have been teaching.” Is there a healthy emphasis on playtime and socialization? When kids are running around and playing, they’re also exercising their minds. Structured play is good, but make sure plenty of time is allowed for children to be children and use their imaginations. Land emphasizes teaching children how to get along with each other during playtime. “They don’t 18

HOW PRESCHOOLS ARE ACCREDITED The North Carolina Division of Child Development issues licenses based on a star-rating given to all eligible child care facilities. get that opportunity at home, one on one with a parent,” she says. “They need to learn patience in a group setting. We show them how to respect others and share in a positive manner. If children aren’t taught these things, when they get to kindergarten, they’re going to have difficulties.” Land believes a balance between work and play is essential. “When they’re learning, they focus on learning, but when they play, they just play. Work and play are separated.”

They learn a lot just by playing with each other.”

Possinger-Keiper agrees. “That’s one of our mottos, the balance between learning and play. Throughout the day, we want to make sure they have lots of free time.

For more information about finding and choosing a quality preschool near you, check out https://ncchildcare.ncdhhs.gov.

Bottom line: your child should leave preschool ready for kindergarten—if not ahead of the game—in terms of academics and social skills. After enrollment, monitor your child’s progress for a few days. If you see any indication that the school doesn’t meet your standards, you have the right to remove your child, no questions asked.

About 10% of preschools receive quality of care accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). The nonprofit organization imposes stringent guidelines for facility design, staff qualifications, health and safety, and physical environment. See more at www.naeyc.org.

HOW MUCH DOES PRESCHOOL COST? Average preschool costs range from $372 to $1,100 per month according to the National Association of Child Care Resource and Referral Agencies. A preschool does not have to be lavish or expensive to be good. In fact, there are free and low-cost preschools throughout the region. Eligible families can get some costs covered by the state of North Carolina if the preschool participates in the Subsidized Child Care Program. Head Start is a free federal preschool available to low-income families with children ages three to five. You can find a listing for free or lower cost preschools at freepreschools.org.

EIGHT WAYS TO MANAGE STRESS By JC Summerford

Everyone faces stressful situations: pulling an all-nighter to meet a work deadline, worrying over the monthly budget, dealing with relationship and family issues, driving home through rush hour traffic. Occasional stress can motivate us to make positive life changes, but if it remains at high levels, stress can lead to psychological and physical ailments. Short-term stress symptoms include headache, nausea, fatigue, moodiness, and panic attacks. Heavy, long-term stress, however, can create more serious conditions: heart disease, clinical depression, diabetes, obesity, immune system disorders, and gastrointestinal illness. While we can’t eliminate stress from our lives, it’s smart to have a game plan to manage it. Try to incorporate some of these stress-busting habits into your daily life. Your mind and body will thank you!

01 EXERCISE Regular physical exercise is hands-down the best way to deal with stress. Start with daily walks or bike rides, and over time, 20

challenge yourself with more vigorous workouts at least three to four times a week. If you dislike the gym, try swimming, tennis, golf, or any sport you enjoy. Some exercises are custom-made for stress reduction, such as yoga, tai chi, Pilates, and martial arts.

02 RELAX Stress tenses your muscles, often more than you realize. Be sure to start your day with a gentle stretching routine. Taking a warm bath can work wonders after a long day, especially a soak with aromatic bubbles. Why not light a candle or two and listen to peaceful music? Massage is another proven way to work out the kinks. It’s critical to get a full night’s sleep—most adults need seven or eight hours.

03 BREATHE DEEPLY You don’t have to become a Buddhist monk to reap the benefits of deep breathing. Anytime you feel stress, just stop. Go to a quiet place—the bedroom, a balcony, even your car. Sit with your hands in your lap or by your side. Close your eyes,

breathe slowly and deeply in and out. Count each breath until you get to ten. Repeat until you feel calm, usually after five to ten minutes. Some folks find it helpful to visualize that they are in a relaxing place, such as a forest or beach. Others mentally repeat positive thoughts or prayers. Even if you just take a few deep, cleansing breaths at your desk, it should help.

04 EAT WELL Stress eating is distracted eating. In other words you just eat because it makes you feel better. This often results in overeating comfort foods and junk. Then, a feedback loop forms, and the bad foods exacerbate your stress so you eat even more. Make a commitment to stick to a healthier diet, including lots of veggies, whole grains, fruits and lean proteins, and try not to succumb too often to fatty, sugary, salty treats. If you feel stress is causing gastro problems, a doctor or certified dietician can help design a personalized food plan.

05 CHILL OUT Simplify your life as best you can. Start with a few small things, such as leaving the house early so you aren’t in a rush to get to work. Drive in the slow lane, listen to soothing music. Here’s a big one: Learn to say “NO”. Recognize that you cannot oblige every request from your boss, loved ones, and friends. Set aside time each day for peaceful activities, such as gardening, painting, knitting, reading, or baking an amazing cake.

06 TALK ABOUT IT

over time, this can result in stress-related illness. Talk to trusted friends, family, a minister, or doctor. You can even do some positive self-talk—no, it doesn’t mean you’re crazy! If you find yourself being self-critical, switch the message to something like: “I can do this!” “I’m grateful to be alive today!” or “This moment doesn’t define me!” Talking things out helps put everything into perspective and helps a negative situation be less troubling.

07 BREAK IT UP Life’s not perfect, and no individual is perfect. You can only control your own thoughts and actions, so just do what you can and laugh at everything else. Yes, a healthy sense of humor is another trick to help you through stressful times. Try making a list of possible solutions for a stubborn problem. If you encounter an insurmountable block, try breaking it into small tasks that you can focus on one at a time. Write these manageable to-dos on a calendar so you can see that the end is indeed in sight.

08 PULL THE TRIGGERS What’s causing the most stress in your life? Is it financial responsibilities, a fight with your spouse, a difficult boss? Once you identify these stress triggers, you can work to disarm them. Some people find that keeping a stress journal helps you identify triggers. You might have an a-ha! moment where you realize, “oh, that’s what has been bugging me.” At that point, you can take positive action to change those patterns which lead you to stress.

Believe it or not, just talking about what’s bothering you can lower your stress level. Many of us hold secret pain inside, and IREDELL LIVING • AUGUST 2019

Dr. Tiffany Hubbs Veterinarian Pictured – Dr. Tiffany Hubbs with patient Lexie

What is your educational training? I received my undergraduate degree in pre-veterinary medicine and biology with a minor in chemistry from The University of Findlay and my Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Tuskegee University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2002. How did you decide on this career track? There was never anything else I wanted to do. Growing up on a farm and raising various animals provided me with a basic knowledge and respect for animals. I love what I do. God has blessed me with surgical abilities, and that is one of my favorite parts of my job, but I wanted to do mixed animal medicine, so I did not pursue a surgical residency. What services do you offer that sets you apart from others in your field? We are very aware of providing compassionate, state-of-the-art care. We offer 24

radiology, ultrasound, and sophisticated testing equipment that allow quick diagnoses. We have a 24/7 on-call service for our clients, and I am always willing to consult with any client. We are a mixed animal practice and service pretty much all animals except cattle or birds. We offer mobile services for horses, goats, and sheep. We treat our patients as if they are our own pets—with compassion and an emphasis on client education. Our facility includes a unique, hands-free, two-kennel rabies quarantine for pets. Tell us about the growth of your company since its start-up: We began in 2013 as Bradford Animal Hospital, but I felt we needed to show more community support and involvement, so in 2018 we transitioned to North Iredell Animal Hospital. We have grown significantly in the last few years averaging 10 to 15 percent growth each

year. We offer new client discounts, royal referrals by sending a friend, and we’re developing our hospice and mobile end of life services to serve all pet owners. Although we are growing, our commitment and dedication isn’t going to change. What changes or achievements have you made in the past year? We received the Best of Statesville in 2017 and 2019 award. Internally, we have made excellent changes with our accounts, advertising, and attitude as a team. We have supported local organizations, churches, and schools. What are your personal or professional goals for the future? My personal and professional goals are the same. When creative, energetic, and passionate people pull together for a common cause, good things happen.

Thrivent Financial has provided financial services to Christians for more than 100 years. They help people navigate financial goals, choices, and change. They craft plans that factor your needs, goals, and faith with solutions to suit your unique situation. We spoke to consultant Kelly M. Jones, BFA, CLTC, FIC, about how Thrivent differs from others operating in the same arena. What services does Thrivent offer? We want to help you make wise financial choices on your journey. We offer financial planning, advice, investments, retirement accounts, insurance, annuities, and more. We specialize in Estate Strategies, Investment Strategies, Financial Advice, Charitable Giving, and Tax Efficiency. What awards or industry recognition have you or your firm received? Last year I achieved Diamond Group with my company, an elite group of the top twenty financial professionals across the country. I’m one of just three women to achieve this. I was also recognized by our InFaith Foundation as a VIP (Voice in Philanthropy). Thrivent is a Fortune 500 Company. We received Etisphere’s World’s Most Ethical Company eight years straight. We have a Fitch AA+ rating and an AM Best A++ rating. Tell us about Thrivent’s community involvement. Individuals over 70 ½ are subject to required minimum distributions from their IRAs and can direct these dollars directly to charitable institutions. What sets you apart from other financial services companies? My team, the Greater Carolinas Group, and how we work with individuals and other financial professionals. With over 100 years of experience we are dedicated to changing the member experience and mentoring other financial professionals into greatness. We want to create a place where people feel they have “life advisors.” They can trust us to give them sound advice for life’s hardest times. What are your goals for the future? We want to break down the fears people have around financial planning. We also want to help others make a difference in people’s lives, impacting this community on a broader scale. Thrivent’s motto is “Be Wise with Money” to help people “Live Generously.” My personal motto is, “If you get to the top alone, it’s because you forgot to bring others with you.” IREDELL LIVING • AUGUST 2019

New Member Spotlight Did you know that one of North Carolina’s largest jerky manufacturing facilities is in Statesville? Alvin Cape (AC) is the man behind the bright yellow label and the crisp, tasty cowboystyle jerky. He operates the plant with his wife, Judy, and mother-in-law, Colleen Huffstickler. They produce over 2,000 packs of jerky each week in seven signature flavors: regular, hot, peppered, barbeque, teriyaki, Cajun and spicy honey barbeque. AC’s also produces Ray’s Chili, a tasty recipe passed down from Judy’s dad. The newest addition to their menu is a beef stick in spicy or mild.
