THE END OFOF AN AN THE END

August is the month to enjoy the remainder of summer vacation and prepare for another school year. From small children starting their first year of kindergarten to young adults going away to their first year of college, those firsts can be intimidating and a little scary for both parents and children. I was a stay at home mom and remember my oldest son’s first day of kindergarten. I left him screaming, “Don’t leave me here!” I tried to prepare him by taking him to half-day play schools and didn’t think about preparing myself for that day. I cried all the way home, sad that I wouldn’t see him all day, wondering how he would cope, and realizing that it was an end to an era. Luckily, his teacher and I were friends. She called me mid-morning to let me know he was doing just fine, and his tears stopped within a few minutes of my leaving him. Bless her! Likewise, when it was time for him to go to college, I was to meet him for orientation that morning, as he had spent the previous night with some friends on campus. I was so excited for my son. I 8

was standing at a second story window watching for his arrival. As soon as I saw him, I got tears in my eyes. He looked so young and naive and all grown up at the same time. I began to grieve the end of another era. I’m embarrassed to say that I cried through the whole orientation, to the point that he looked at me and asked if I was going to be okay. Too funny! Again, he was fine—I wasn’t! These milestones can be tough on parents. We know how to prepare our children, yet we forget about how it may affect us. Even though my heart swells with pride with each milestone my children cross, I can’t help feeling a little sadness that it means they need me less. I guess we have done our job if we become obsolete. As they ease into their freedom, we regain ours. We’ve worked hard to earn the title of parent; we don’t lose that when they go off to college. Our role just changes. I remember calling my son’s cell and waiting for three days for a return call. He was busy, but I was freaking out. A friend of mine laughed and said, “So you
haven’t heard from him in three whole days! Jeez!” He was being facetious. I was clueless, looking at him like, “What?” Obviously, I had to learn to back off, give my son his freedom, and talk to him on his terms. He was growing up but still needed an occasional sounding board and my help. So, I wasn’t obsolete yet. Young adults will struggle with their newfound freedom and will make mistakes. Let them, and be there to support them through their struggles. The first year of college is an adjustment for both students and parents. Text messages can work well if you need to take care of business. If you just want to hear their voice, text, and ask them to call you when they have a chance. Respect their privacy and their schedule. As hard as it is to let go, they will learn some valuable lessons, if you let them. Only step in when necessary. It will take a little time for both of you to adjust. Usually, after they drag all their laundry and belongings in during their first summer break, you will be ready to send them back.

With comfortable suites and a highly trained, experienced staff, The Birth Place at Iredell Memorial is committed to providing the best experience possible for you and your baby. “We focus on the mother’s choice,” Sharon Johnson, director of The Birth Place at IMH, said. “We work with patients on their birth plans and things that are important to them. Everybody’s birth experience is a little bit different.” Patients often comment on the extra level of care they receive at The Birth Place. Staff focuses on specialty training and education, like neonatal resuscitation certifications. The Birth Place also uses a mother-baby nursing concept. 18

“We have one nurse who takes care of the mom and baby, instead of having one nurse take care of the mom and another nurse take care of the baby,” Sharon said. “This model of care is really best for overall maternity care.” When it is time to deliver at The Birth Place, there is usually no need to move to a different room. Medical equipment is carefully hidden from view in the maternity suite until it’s needed. “This concept is called the single room concept, LDRP—patients labor, deliver, recuperate, and stay postpartum in the same room,” Sharon said. “Our rooms are large enough to bring more equipment in and still have plenty of space.” Another benefit of having your baby at Iredell Memorial
is being part of a program called Your Pampered Pregnancy. It includes special discounts at area businesses and the services of a personal pregnancy coach who will answer your questions and locate resources. Even after your delivery, you can reach your pregnancy coach and your lactation consultant for information when you need it. The Birth Place also offers a wide range of classes, including infant CPR, Car Seat Safety, Newborn Care, Breastfeeding, and more. Tours of The Birth Place are available for expectant parents and
siblings. All of those options are free for patients and the public. “We feel education is an important part of the whole birth experience,” said Pam Speight, RN. “We don’t want cost to prohibit people from participating.” Exciting changes and new technology are planned for The Birth Place in the future, including the addition of wireless fetal monitors, which allow patients to walk around the unit rather than having to stay tethered to a device. Mothers are also given helpful items for
baby care when they arrive back home with their newborn. The Birth Place recently began offering a special meal for two to celebrate new arrivals, as well. “At The Birth Place, our patients are like family, and we want them all to have a wonderful experience and to know that their well-being is our top priority,” Pam said. Positive Attitude By Lauren Davidson

The CFO of my company has a message written on his whiteboard that I think we could all benefit from. It reads: Benefits of a Positive Attitude: 1. Other people genuinely like to be around you; it’s contagious 2. Increased life span 3. Lower rate of depression 4. Lower level of distress 5. Greater resistance to the common cold 6. Better psychological and physical well-being 7. Reduced risk of death from heart disease 8. Better coping skills during hardships and times of stress Apparently, after encountering a week that seemed to be doused in negativity, the CFO looked up the benefits of a positive attitude on the Mayo Clinic website to motivate his employees. It’s a good reminder that not only does a positive attitude affect interactions with others, it
also affects your own well-being. Have you noticed that when something negative happens, it can gain momentum, and your whole day, week, or year has been a series of difficult events? I’d like to argue that if you focus on it, the same thing can happen with positivity. When it feels like life keeps throwing curveballs or you’re just getting bored with the monotony, it’s important to coax—or snap—yourself out of it. It’s easy to fall into a routine of negativity, and it happens to all of us. The most important thing you can do is to recognize it. Sometimes, I’ll tell myself, “Today, I’m going to have a really good day,” and I try to stick with it. Don’t forget that you are in charge of your destiny. If you actively decide to be positive—again and again, hour after hour, curveball after curveball—you will find that your general outlook on life starts to look up. You are in control of your emotions, not the other way around. If life feels unfair, rise above it and keep living. Each day,
hour, and minute is an opportunity to be happy and to do something you enjoy. Try putting your own happiness first, not at the expense of others, of course, but just try it. Say to yourself, “Is this serving me?” and react accordingly. You’ll quickly assess the things that provide joy and those that do not. I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the brevity of our time here, and I think that we so often fall into a routine of not being appreciative and joyful about every day that we spend alive. Living in a monotonous blur is no way to spend your time. My advice is to try, starting tomorrow, with a determined mission to be positive. See what happens. If you don’t find purpose within your day, think about making some changes. At some point, I think we all need to take a look around and evaluate where we are and where we want to go. As Ferris Beuller said, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” IREDELL LIVING • AUGUST 2017

As local manufacturer Corning prepares for the future, they are poised to bring growth and opportunity to the region. “This is an exciting time for Corning,” says Rob France, senior vice president of human resources for Corning Optical Communications. “We are seeing increasing demand for our products across the globe, and we’re stepping up production to meet that demand. That is good news for North Carolina, which already houses two of the world’s largest optical fiber facilities and two of the world’s largest optical cable facilities.” New York-based Corning Incorporated employs approximately 40,000 people worldwide. More than 3,000 of those employees are located at five sites across North Carolina supporting the Optical Communications business that produces optical fiber and hardware solutions. But recent expansion announcements indicate that number will soon grow. Corning will add 200 jobs through an expansion in Cabarrus County, and at least 210 jobs will be created with the establishment of a new optical cable manufacturing facility in Newton. In addition, more than 100 jobs will be added at locations in both Hickory and Winston-Salem. “We are extremely happy to expand our presence across the region,” said France. “Hickory and the surrounding areas are integral to our 46-year history in North Carolina, and they will remain so as we look ahead.”

As schedules get hectic, it is essential to start each day with a protein-rich breakfast. Consider these prepare ahead, grab and go, recipes to help with those busy mornings.

Blend all ingredients in a blender or food processor and pour into popsicle molds or paper cups and freeze. You can even add granola to the tops of the popsicle mold for crunchy goodness. Place in the freezer and freeze overnight.

To hard boil eggs, place eggs in a sauce pan and cover with cold water. Cook on high just until the water begins to boil. Cover the sauce pan with a lid and cut the burner off. Let the eggs sit in the hot water for 17 minutes. Pour off hot water and run cold water over eggs until they are cool enough to peel. Peel eggs, and slice each one in half, lengthwise. Take the yokes from the eggs and place in a mixing bowl. Mash the yokes with a fork. Add mayonnaise (or yogurt), vinegar, salt and pepper and mix together until creamy. Depending on your preference, you can add more
Fill egg whites with yoke mixture, garnishing with bacon bits. Cover and refrigerate.
Other Ways To Add Protein
Muffin and bread recipes can be rich in protein. Keep in mind that white flour has protein, but the more protein, the more gluten. So if you are trying to avoid gluten, look at the nut flours or coconut flour. Non-gluten flours will not rise unless you add 1/8 of teaspoon of backing soda and baking powder per 1/4 cup of flour. Walnuts are high in protein and a great addition to any muffin. You can also replace 1/3 of your flour with protein powder. IREDELL LIVING • AUGUST 2017

We all approach every situation, every day, with our own tool bag that we have created over time. Economic development and longterm community sustainability rests, to some degree, on the backs of these young leaders. Traditionally, economic development revolved around a large industry moving into a community that provided jobs requiring manual dexterity. Those jobs have largely been replaced by skill sets of mental dexterity and creative problem solving. Many believe industrial growth in the future will revolve around those geographical pockets in which the 25 to 45-year-old populace has chosen to live and become vibrant community leaders.
The Chamber is seeking nominations for this recognition. Maureen Moore is the chair of future5 this year, and she enthusiastically notes, “Please consider nominating young professionals who are currently growing and excelling in their respective fields and positively influencing growth, prosperity, and quality of life in the Statesville area.”

ow do you define a leader? Is it someone who inspires others into positive action? Maybe a leader is a resource for information who is willing to share it with others. Each year at this time, the MooresvilleSouth Iredell Chamber of Commerce tries to define and identify new leaders within our community. We do this with our leadership programs for adults and high school students. This year, our adult leadership class is composed of the Mooresville Young Professionals Group. The leadership program’s purpose is to help prepare and build new community leaders by developing leadership skills, instilling self confidence, and building team awareness. The students learn to overcome obstacles by communicating and working together toward a common goal. This is done by destroying the two great impediments to leadership and success in any field of endeavor, which are fear and apathy. Fear comes in many forms: fear of failure, fear of success, fear of the unknown, and, most primal, the fear of survival. The very first class, held at Iredell County’s ropes challenge course, is a trial of mind over matter. Stepping out of your comfort zone when you traverse the ropes course can help you gain confidence in the face of fear. With encouragement from teammates and courage, participants learn to work through their fear and continue on toward their goal. They learn that fear is not an impediment to their success. Apathy is described as indifference, an “I don’t care attitude.” But, in reality, apathy comes from a belief that what you do does not matter. It’s the feeling of powerlessness, often brought on by lack
of knowledge or incorrect information. We combat this with information and education. Each month, class participants learn about their government, their schools, their business community, and the needs of their neighbors. Whether it is LifeSpan, Dove House, the Christian Mission, or the Mooresville Soup Kitchen, these nonprofits’ needs are met with a combined government, business, and community commitment. New, potential leaders have a one-onone experience with those in need. They look into the face of poverty. They look into the face of the disabled. They look into the face of the elderly, and they do not turn away, because each face looks familiar. The commonality in each is their humanity. Apathy quickly dissolves into empathy. Empowered by fearlessness and a warmed heart, our new leaders see the need and commit to solving these problems. Is a leader a problem solver? Maybe it is just someone who helps others reach their goals. They say if you help enough people reach their goals, you will reach yours. Potential leaders are all around us. I do not know who they are, but I do know there are many people who are capable and willing to help. They just don’t know how or where to start; they need information to do so. The Mooresville-South Iredell Chamber Leadership Program will help you get there. Once you have seen what our past leaders have seen, you will be inspired and motivated just like they were. It is said a mind once expanded beyond its original size can’t go back. The same can also be said of the human heart.
