IREDELL LIVING • OCTOBER 2010

Thanks to a long, successful history, Bell & Howard Chevrolet Cadillac isn’t your typical auto dealership. And for the Statesville community, that’s a very good thing. Locally owned since 1927, the Bell & Howard story actually begins thirty years later - when Mr. E.R. Bell and Mr. W.P. Howard, both auto men, partnered in 1957 to purchase the dealership first founded on Meeting Street. At the time, the business was known as Scarborough Chevrolet. It remained that way until 1971, when the dealership moved into its current 54,000-square-foot facility on Gaither Road just off Exit 151 from Interstate 40. From that time forward, the names Bell & Howard became synonymous with Chevrolet – and an enduring family legacy – in Statesville.

department and asked if I wanted the job. And that’s how I got involved.”

“We grew up in the auto business,” says Mr. Howard’s daughter, Linda Howard. Linda started working at the dealership in 1982 and recently managed its former Chrysler Jeep store. Her brother, General Manager John Howard, got his first taste of the family business even younger.

The Howard family’s roots in the auto industry trace back to their maternal grandfather, Edward R. McHenry, who owned McHenry Chevrolet in Hickory and was part owner of City Chevrolet in Charlotte from 1948-51.

“I started cleaning cars at the dealership when I was thirteen,” John recalls. “I went to Appalachian and earned an accounting degree, but I always knew I wanted to be in the business. I’m the youngest of four, but Linda and I are the ones who got interested in the business and stuck with it. When I came in, I started as a salesman and worked my way up.”

“At that time, my father had been working in Trinidad for a tobacco company,” says Linda. “When he and my mother moved back to the States, our grandfather put our daddy in as new car sales manager at McHenry Chevrolet. When the dealership was sold, Daddy worked for Abernathy Chevrolet for a few years before joining with Mr. Bell to buy Scarborough Chevrolet.”

“Daddy didn’t show any favoritism,” Linda says of Mr. Howard. “I had to wait for an opening to work here. One day Daddy said there was a girl leaving the parts and service

Mr. Howard, who still serves as company president, has been influential in both the local community and the regional and state auto industry over the past five decades. But

while family was the foundation of the business, its employees are what have helped it thrive.

our employees. We remember them, which doesn’t happen at a lot of other places.

“People are what this dealership is all about,” says John. “My father and Mr. Bell always cared so much about the employees, and we do, too. In these troubled times we’ve had to make some tough decisions, but they’ve stuck with us. They’re very loyal people. We have some 40-year veterans working here. And my father, even though a stroke slowed him down a bit, still comes in every morning.”

“For me, it boils down to the family atmosphere here,” Scott continues. “This business is not just one of 20 or more dealerships owned by a large corporation. It’s a family dealership where everybody cares about what’s going on. It’s more than a job; it’s personal for all the employees and our customers. And it’s a great time to be a GM dealer. We still have to watch the bottom line, but we have a lot of great products coming in that will help us down the road.”

“Some customers come here strictly because of the people they deal with,” Linda adds. “Roger Jones, the service writer and assistant manager, has been with us since the early 1970s. Some people probably wouldn’t come if Roger wasn’t here anymore. And Allen Pope, our service director, has been with us since 1982. They know our customers, they know people by name and they know their history. People feel comfortable here.” Veteran sales manager Rhyne Scott, a 20-year employee, echoes those sentiments. “In today’s market, people have more choices. But when you’ve got employees who have been here 20, 30, 40 years, customers come back. They have that trust in the dealership and in 12

IREDELL LIVING • OCTOBER 2010

The future for the business looks bright – especially since it is now heralding the return of Cadillac to its inventory – and name – following the marquee’s one-year absence from the showroom floor. “We had been a Cadillac store for many, many years, and when GM transitioned several months ago, we were part of the wind-down for Cadillac dealers,” Scott explains. “Now we’re getting Cadillac inventory and getting ready to go strong for the 2011 model year and calendar year.” “When Cadillac shut down our operation, our customers were really upset,”

adds John. “Cadillac owners want quality and service, but they also want convenience. They didn’t want to drive to Charlotte to get their cars serviced. When we had an opportunity to bring Cadillac back, we jumped on it. All of our customers have been telling us how happy they are to see it return.” As with any business, making customers happy is key to the dealership’s success. Part of that satisfaction is reflected by the service department’s ranking of number one in their General Motors district for customer satisfaction. At the time this article went to press, the service department had held that ranking for four consecutive months. “This ranking goes back to taking care of the customers who come through our door,” Scott says. “Those rankings come from Customer Satisfaction Index surveys that customers fill out; it’s nothing you can buy. It’s from actual numbers based on true customer response.” “It’s pretty hard to get that ranking once,” adds Linda. “To earn it four months in a row is pretty amazing, and we commend our service department for making that happen.” Being recognized for outstanding service is a hard-earned accolade

that distinguishes Bell & Howard Chevrolet Cadillac among its peers. And while this dedication to service is evident at the dealership, it’s also apparent within the community. “Being locally owned, community involvement has always been important to us,” says Scott, who serves as a board member for the United Way. “We’re involved in everything from the United Way to the Chamber and other organizations that assist the citizens of this town and this county. We’re committed to helping people well beyond our front doors.” “Daddy always said, ‘We’re in this business to get repeat business,’” Linda adds. “He said that if you just go for the sale and try to make a large profit, you’ll upset people and they won’t come back. He knew we needed their loyalty, and the only way we’d get it was by treating our people right and our customers right.” The tradition of service started by Edward McHenry and passed down through Mr. W.P. Howard is clearly still alive and well at Bell & Howard Chevrolet Cadillac. Standing With Partners For The Greater Good

C

ongratulations to the fine folks with the newly expanded Iredell Living, and welcome into the southern area of our beautiful county! The MooresvilleSouth Iredell Chamber of Commerce is pleased to serve as a partner in the success of this publication. During a time where many businesses are fearful of branching out, this media team has obviously learned how to think about opportunities. It’s exciting to see how they have developed and harnessed their imagination while looking to the future. In the Chamber business, our partners are the key to our success and to the success of our community. Obviously as a business memberbased organization, we depend on our business and professional firms who invest in our program of work financially and with their time & talent. In return, the Chamber is able to offer a wide variety of marketing and advertising opportunities to assist those member firms in their connection to prospective clients and resources that can support their growth. The real partnership blossoms, however, when the owner realizes the intangible return through what the Chamber does for the community at-large.

IREDELL IREDELL LIVING LIVING • • OCTOBER OCTOBER 2010 2010

Living in Iredell County is a blessing in itself because of the many golden nuggets that our area offers. Another important role of the Chamber is to constantly keep those nuggets polished so that the quality of life remains vibrant. That requires partnership with our service organizations, the arts community, parks & recreation, and many others. Meanwhile, if our quality of life is strong then our business community is enhanced and residents benefit. While the development of jobs in our area is important, the Chamber must equally focus on the development of skills and abilities in those jobs so that our companies are more effective and efficient in their operations. Our workforce development initiatives have never been more important as today’s businesses are forced to operate in a lean, mean mode. It is in collaboration with our educational partners and member resources that allows us to provide training, coaching, counseling, and retooling. Our work in public policy demands a partnership with all levels of government as the Chamber supports pro-business legislation. Educating the voters, grooming community leadership, focusing on infrastructure

issues such as transportation, and developing respected relationships with elected officials are key elements in our program of advocacy. As newcomers move into our county, the Chamber welcomes them with open arms and connects them with the necessary resources to plug into the community. We are the front door to the Mooresville-Lake Norman region… Our mission is to serve as a community champion and advocate for business. The MSI Chamber of Commerce values cooperation and wants to stand together with our partners for the greater good of Iredell living.

Occasionally, we call ourselves citizens of Troutman, Statesville, Mooresville or any of the other municipalities as if that defines who we are. My hope is that we seek life outside of those artificial boundaries that are set by our governmental bodies. I hope that we let relationships define who we are. How does that happen? It happens partly by being intentional about building working and social friendships with those that live in other parts of the county. We have been elated with the publication, “Statesville Living” since its inception. We have found it to be a

I expect we’ll find that we have much more in common than many of us realize. We have all seen challenging economic times over the last two years. The world has changed dramatically and now, more than ever, we need each other. It is important that we seek to take care of each other – through shopping locally – if not in your own town, at least in Iredell County. For
