By Kevin Campbell Spring is almost here and after this past winter many people, including me, will be glad to see it. Spring is the time of year when most people think about planting. In this article I hope to offer you some ideas to make your home landscape more successful and rewarding. Here in the Piedmont Of North Carolina we have many varieties of trees, shrubs, and perennials to choose from to use in our landscapes. After being born into and working in the nursery and landscaping business for most of my 48 years, here are some suggestions on landscaping I would like to pass along. First, every dollar spent on your home landscape will give you a good return for the money, whether you ever intend to sell your home or not. Landscaping your home can be a very rewarding family activity and is a source of pride and enjoyment for all. 8

IREDELL LIVING • MARCH 2011

With so many varieties of plants and trees to choose from, where do you start? A good first place is to ask your local county agriculture extension office. Most counties have a horticulture specialist that can offer you tips, guidelines and advice on choosing plants for your landscape, and they are not trying to make any money off of you! Another good source if you look online is the North Carolina native plant society, www.ncwildflower.org and the national wildflower center at the University of Texas at Austin, www. wildflower.org. Above all do not fall for gimmick plants. Many homeowners and plant specialists alike regret the day they bought the first Bradford Pear or Leyland Cypress. One problem we all may face in the future in North Carolina is the shortage of water. With our growing population

and so many wanting to use the water we have, it is a good idea to choose drought tolerant plants and trees for your landscape. Beds and groupings of plants, trees and ornamental grasses in mulched areas are better choices than so much lawn to mow or water. Native plants are growing in popularity with homeowners and landscapers alike because they have had the benefit of adjusting to our changing climatic conditions for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. Native plants also offer other benefits as well. Native plants benefit birds and butterflies and other beneficial insects more than non-native plants. Many good native plant choices are not as well known as our maligned White Dogwood. However, consider the American Redbud, Dwarf Red Buckeye, American Beautyberry and many other native warm season ornamental grasses to choose

from. For summer and fall, Panicums or Switchgrasses and Muhlenbergia Capillaris or Pink Muhly Grass are good choices. There are many good non-native trees and shrubs as well that are very drought tolerant, once established, and offer years of enjoyment and little hassle. Crepe Myrtles have always been popular throughout the South. They are very hardy and very drought tolerant. Many different kinds of holly can serve you well for many years–both native and non-native varieties. Old garden roses are extremely popular these days, with varieties being introduced such as the Knock Out and others. These old garden roses have the benefit of being drought resistant, as well as resistant to most diseases and insects, so they do not need to be sprayed as much. There are many good choices of plants and trees for your landscape. Do your homework and research the plants and trees you would like to use. Think more environmentally conscious about drought tolerant species of plants and trees, and also those that do not need to be sprayed for unwanted pests and diseases. Proper planning will make landscaping your home or business more enjoyable for all.

Imagine you’re living in Paris. Pampering yourself each day is a must. You and all your girlfriends were born to shop. Regularly. Now, you’re back here in downtown Statesville. Where are you? At Gracie. When you walk into Gracie, breathe in the Parisian charm, the old world/new world nostalgia. It just drips off the walls. “We’re unique,” Gracie (aka Gail Sommer Germain) tells me. “We have a bit of everything for fabulous women.” Experiencing Gracie might take awhile, perhaps a lifetime, but it will be a lifetime of fun! Gracie is Gail’s new boutique destination for women on the hunt for clothes, gifts, interior fashions, boots, bags and more. Cozy and inviting, like every chic woman’s home, Gracie has that classic French feel. Enter at the corner of Water and N. Center Streets in the Barnard Building and wander from one elegant display to the next. Gracie’s delightful treasures will stir your imagination.

FABULOUS FASHIONS FOR FABULOUS FEMALES Looking for a fresh new look? Explore “Le Dressing Room.” There you’ll find a spacious closet-like nook filled with fabulous styles you won’t find anywhere else. “We have everything women love–and need,” Gracie shares. “I choose classic styles tweaked for today. Our selection of jeans from labels like PZI, MEK Denim and Miss Me come in all shapes and sizes.” Straight, skinny, bootleg, classic, distressed, slim or full–Gracie’s jeans will fit you perfectly. Curvy women will find clothes that fit and look great. “With sizes 0 to 18,” Gail says, “every woman can select stylish, comfortable clothes.” Choose a unique ruched, rhinestoned or painted knit top, a jazzy scarf, cool jacket, belt and leggings, and you’re good to go! The fabrics, cuts and designs of Gracie clothing WOW you with cutting edge fashion that’s forever-in-style and wonderfully affordable. Your inner diva is transformed when you wear Gracie.

cial additives, these dreamy body essentials include vitaminrich cleansers, toners, moisturizers and oils to enhance your daily bathing ritual.

WHO IS GRACIE? Gracie, the boutique, is the creation of Gail Sommer Germain, a lovely, high-energy diva. Gracie’s classic black and white polka dots lure you into Gail’s fabulous imagination. “Gracie is the woman I want to be–fabulous, a little risqué, a bit wild,” Gail says with her beautiful smile. “She’s feminine, strong, brave and beautiful. She knows what she likes. Always up for adventure. At the same time, she takes care of herself, indulging her need for pampering and peacefulness.” With business manager and best friend, Debi Musgrave, in hand, along with Debi’s husband, Ted, the transformation of an empty storefront into a fabulous boutique began in 2010. Ted created most of their displays, including the bright pink claw-foot bathtub and matching sink, brimming with bath goodies. “Everything in the store is for sale,” Gail says. “If someone wants the tub and sink, great! Our collection of fabulous interior items–art prints, furniture, bedding, linens, pillows, framed photos–are fun and make spectacular gifts.” When Gail and her family settled in Statesville three years ago, she was looking for a place with homegrown values–a comfortable life style. Gail and her husband, Bob Germain,

BED, BATH AND PAMPERING Wander over to “Le Boudoir” for pampering luxuries. Match BedHead pajamas with a comfy Aegean bathrobe, and you’re channeling Reece Witherspoon in Legally Blonde. What’s your slipper preference–spa styles in soft microfiber, Bon Bon handcrafted silks or whimsical Goody Goody slippers you can wear as casual shoes? Take your pick–your feet will thank you. Then surround yourself with custom bedroom fashions: bedding, linens and pillows. “Le Bath” features Gracie’s extravagant selection of fragrance, bubbles, soaps, lotions, creams, powders, and body butters. Even airbrushed tans by Fake Bake, “the most beautiful, flawless tan under the sun!” Organic skincare products by the Grapeseed Company will change your life. Gail’s family includes their two children: 15-year-old daughter, Sydney, her biggest critic and adamant supporter, and 11-yearold son, Robbie, her best salesman. “When Robbie looks at you with his big brown eyes and tells you how great you look, he’s cinched a sale!” Gail laughed. She laughs a lot. Life with a NASCAR team owner-husband (think Brendan Goughan, Todd Bodine, Casey Mears, Max Papis) is not dull. In their new digs, Gail renovated the barn with mirrors, artwork, and dress up clothes, then moved in Kate, their mule and Bubba, their seven-year-old horse. “I want a lifestyle that’s fun, fulfilling and exciting. I need to be surrounded by beautiful things and inspiring women. Being involved with my community and being challenged is very important,” Gail says. “I’ve met so many people who love Statesville, and I’m excited to offer something new and different. Mayor Kutteh is a big fan. He’s introduced his wife and daughters to Gracie. John Barnard is my landlord, and we’re just about breaking even with the rent and his wife’s and daughters’ purchases!”

© 2011 Shane Greene Photography

Gail is impressed with the Downtown Statesville Development Corporation and Marin Tomlin’s impact on the downtown area. Gail is involved with several local organizations, such as Purple Heart Homes, 5th Street Ministries, the YMCA, Boys and Girls Club and the Chamber of Commerce.

SPECIAL GIFTS FOR SPECIAL WOMEN “Le Gift Room,” (to your left as you enter) is so full of fabulous girlfriend gifts that it’s hard to describe everything. I loved the CandiLicious fabulously fragrant candles and the custompainted wine glasses. Bad Girl Art by Lolly Lu, and Lucky Street Gallery bachelorette gifts make you smile. Who doesn’t need an edgy flask and sassy “personals” case embellished with girlfriend humor? stains), Jaks (just say no to cracks) and the Boob Tube, a shortbut-sweet cami-like tube top to wear under low-cut styles. Fabulous, discreet overnight totes with every necessity for your trip home after a long night–“Don’t do the walk of shame–do the stride of pride!”–are a must. When you visit, bring a friend–male or female. The guys are making their way to Gracie, too, selecting perfect gifts for fabulous women in their lives. Particularly enjoyable is Men & Martini night, just sit back and let the girls at Gracie help you find the perfect gift; it’s a no-brainer. Guys, you just have to visit Gracie and feel the love.

FOR WOMEN, GIRLS AND BABIES, TOO “Our customers tend to laugh all the while they’re shopping,” Kim Sharpe, executive sales associate, told me, pointing out little signs of memorable advice hanging all through the store and Dimrs, adhesive-free nipple covers for under your sheerest tees. Little girls, and the grandmas who love them, rave over sweet outfits, shoes, and accessories–Ruffle-Butts for size 0 - 3T, Elegant Baby and Haute Baby, adorable fashions fitting newborns to toddlers and Lelli Kelly’s sparkly designer Mary Janes and tennis shoes. For fashionable girls’ shoes, pick out dress ups, boots, espadrilles, Ralph Lauren’s driving shoes for infants– there’s an amazing selection that’s all too fun.

Business Plan Competition: Stoking The Entrepreneurial Spirit There are no silver bullets that will heal the economic scars that our country, and certainly Iredell County, has realized. Recovery will be a long process. In a convoluted lens, perhaps that is a good thing. A quick fix is simply a band aid susceptible to fail. Our task has to be to shore up the foundation. In a unique partnership, both Chambers of Commerce in Iredell County, the Small Business Center at Mitchell Community College, Mountain State University and the Small Business and Technology Development Center are collaborating on a project that is devoted to stoking the entrepreneurial spirit for success. Iredell County’s first Business Plan Competition has begun. All those who desire to open a business within one year (before or after) of May 20, 2011 are able to participate. The competition is open to “for profit” businesses that will open (or have opened) in Iredell County. There is no cost to enter and, simply by participating, you are guaranteed to have a greater chance of success. Why is a business plan important? Many studies show that over 65% of startup businesses fail to make it to the third year. The single most important shared component in most failed startup businesses is the lack of a solid business plan. The repercussions can be immense. Sadly, many would-be entrepreneurs will invest everything they have and own into a dream. Over a decade ago, a friend and I thought we could have a fun, enjoyable and profitable restau18

rant. We were smart, pretty well connected guys that didn’t mind getting our hands dirty. That was a time in which banks could/would lend money based on your “good name” as opposed to perhaps making a prudent decision. Our business plan was, for all practical purposes, drawn up on the back of a napkin. We didn’t challenge ourselves to validate our dreams. We didn’t take into account changes in the marketplace. We didn’t PLAN for the need to have enough funding to get us through the rough times of initial start up. We managed to fail because we didn’t plan to succeed. What does a well organized business plan do? It forces you to look at all aspects of a business. The world is full of good cooks that want to run a restaurant. The food is only one of a myriad of components that determine success. You have to know how to successfully market your product. Have you done the research to determine if there is actually a market for your product or service in the area? What is the price point that will satisfy your business needs as well as meet the value judgment of your prospective customers? During this Business Plan Competition, participants can attend several free workshops devoted to some of these (and many more) issues. The opportunity will be available to work with and through the Small Business Center at Mitchell Community College to help build a valid, working plan. Many participants will have the opportunity to sit down individually with possible financial lenders to talk about what they consider when making

the decision to lend start up monies. Most importantly, participants will be required to defend their business plans. Hard questions will be asked, not in an effort to discredit anyone or any idea, but rather to affirm that the participant has put in the time, energy and intellect to make the right decision. Famed British statesman, Benjamin Disraeli, noted, “The secret of success in life is for a man to be ready for his opportunity when it comes.” Many have dreamed of opening up a business of their own, thinking that they want to seize the opportunity. Without extensive planning, the opportunity may fall like a lead balloon. For more information on the Business Plan Competition go to our website, www.statesvillechamber.org or call Suzanne Wallace at Mitchell Community College at 704-878-3227.

Ambassador Spotlight Susie Wiberg was born

in November of 1950. She managed to live through the 50s and 60s in Southern California without ever having a brush with the law. She hit her stride in the 70s when she encountered an amazing group of women in Fullerton, California. These women would serve to be her liberal beacon in a land of raging conservatives. They were well educated (smart, too), funny, loving and wise. She wanted to be like them when she grew up. She and her husband, Tom, daughter, Bailey and an assortment of family pets arrived in Statesville, North Carolina in September of 1997. A Word From The Mooresville-South Iredell Chamber of Commerce

Project Splash: Leaders Unify With A Common Image & Common Goals Photo by Captain Gus

An Angelou Economics study was underwritten by the Town of Mooresville five years ago. The community-wide long range plan identified the need for common branding among our economic development organizations. The identification of and bringing together groups with a common interest to develop a plan with mutual goals really did not begin until 2009. Under the direction of Sara Haire-Tice, key leaders from the Mooresville-South Iredell Chamber of Commerce, MSI Economic Development Corporation, Mooresville Convention & Visitors Bureau, Mooresville Downtown Commission, Iredell County and the Town of Mooresville initiated a variety of exercises to explore all of the attributes of the Mooresville area. Project Splash was born. A year later, one concept was established for a common image. The Chamber and the Economic Development Corporation were the first to introduce new logos. More recently, the Downtown Commission unveiled an exciting new brand campaign and the Town adopted a new logo to connect the visual elements of the community while using the unified “M.

The branding initiative has required the practice and demonstration of collaborative leadership. Where various groups were working independently on their own projects, those same entities are now unified in working together. Monthly meetings have enhanced relationships. A key element is a connection between Lake Norman and the historic district. The signage, landscaping and consistent message along the east-west connectors will eventually assist in defining Mooresville for all citizens and visitors. Project Splash set a vision and standard for development that is true to the cultural and historical heritage of the community. Our businesses are adapting the design standards that are uniquely Mooresville in their revitalization efforts in the downtown district and along the new corridors. Tourists will realize the wealth of arts and cultural events in Mooresville while also recognizing the recreational benefits of the lake. These are a few examples of how the process has made the community more united.

Splash, I have experienced genuine consensus building and deliberate decision making. The process of creating an identity and position for the Town of Mooresville has created an inclusiveness that promotes understanding, respect and appreciation for diversity. The leaders of this community who served as members of Project Splash for this initiative are to be commended.
