Iredell Living the Good Life

This year has passed too quickly. It seems like only a few weeks ago that we were talking about New Year’s Resolutions for 2010 and wishing everyone a happy, healthy New Year. Now, 2011 is almost here. The year started out with snow on the ground for the better part of three months until late March. Spring and summer brought us Relay For Life, summer concerts, golf tournaments and many worthwhile fundraisers. Carolina BalloonFest happened in late October and ushered in a gorgeous weekend as the sky was filled with an assortment of colorful, hot air balloons. Dancing With The Iredell Stars was a fun-filled event that drew a huge crowd at the Statesville Civic Center to benefit Mitchell Community College. These are just some of the events that we remember from this past year. Please find a way to help those less fortunate in this season of giving. We can all do something and your contribution, whether volunteering your time or making a monetary donation, will make a difference to those in need. Those of us at Iredell Living Magazine want to extend our best wishes to you and your family for a happy, healthy Holiday Season, and thank you for reading our December issue.

Dr. Harsh Govil With Piedmont HealthCare:

Providing A Pain Free Life

By Kristie Darling

For a physician, helping patients attain a higher quality of life is the desired outcome. For Dr. Harsh Govil it is his daily motivation. Dr. Govil is an interventional spine specialist and pain management physician. Trained at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, one of the most prestigious pain management centers in the United States, Dr. Govil recently joined Piedmont HealthCare. For every patient he treats, his goal is to discover the cause of their pain and manage it so that life becomes more livable and everyday tasks are comfortable to accomplish and easier to do. “I want to make sure people know how I can help them as I diagnose and treat the cause of their pain and what procedures I employ to provide relief,” Dr. Govil says. “I offer comprehensive, multidisciplinary treatments for a variety of conditions.” Indeed, many people experience pain at some time in their lives. At Dr. Govil’s Piedmont HealthCare offices in Mooresville and Statesville, patients suffering from back and neck pain, shoulder, knee and hip pain, arthritis, bursitis, strains and sprains, ruptured discs, sciatica, pinched nerves and narrowing of the spinal canals can get an accurate diagnosis and begin appropriate treatment. Last August, Piedmont HealthCare announced the formation of Piedmont Bone & Joint. It is the largest and most comprehensive orthopaedic group in Iredell County. Sub-specialists with expertise in several areas of orthopaedics comprise the Bone & Joint team: orthopaedic surgeons who have been with Piedmont HealthCare for some time are Dr. Richard Adams, Dr. Scott Brandon, Dr. Byron Dunaway, Dr. Jeffrey Kuhlman, and Dr. Robert Saltzman. Dr. Harsh Govil is one of two physicians new to the team; orthopaedic spine surgeon, Dr. Alex Seldomridge, rounds out the group. Dr. Govil and Piedmont HealthCare’s expanded Bone & Joint department offer a full menu of diagnostic and treatment options. They recently opened a state-of-the-procedure suite where procedures for immediate pain relief can be provided when it’s needed most. It is conveniently located next door

to Iredell Memorial Hospital in Statesville. “The advantage for our physicians working together in the same building is to collaborate and confer as we design a suitable treatment plan,” Dr. Govil shared. “Working together we can easily do the initial examination, provide some relief of the presenting pain problem, and then we’re often able to begin treatment immediately. It is efficient and timely, and less expensive, as well. Certainly less costly than having the same procedure at a hospital.” The Bone & Joint specialists have all completed extensive subspecialty training–known as a fellowship–in their respective areas of orthopaedics. Their areas of expertise include hand and wrist, shoulder and elbow, hip, spine, knee, physical rehabilitation and pain management. Their practices focus on a continuum of care of disorders involving muscles, bones, tendons, blood vessels, nerves, and other soft tissues, total joint replacements, and, in Dr. Govil’s case, diagnosing and treating various conditions of the spine leading to low back and neck pain. Through a comprehensive multidisciplinary approach that includes minimally invasive spine procedures, physical therapy, TENS units, psychological consultation and pain medications, he can help manage these conditions. Dr. Govil attended medical school at B.R.D. Medical College in India and graduate school at University of Alabama at Birmingham. He completed his internship and residency IREDELL IREDELLLIVING LIVING••DECEMBER DECEMBER2010 2010

at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland and his fellowship at Cleveland Clinic Foundation. He is board certified by the American Board of Physical Medical and Rehabilitation and the American Board of Pain Medicine. Diagnosing and Treating Pain Over 80% of the patients Dr. Govil sees are experiencing chronic back or neck pain caused by arthritis, failed back surgeries, or disc problems. By helping them manage their pain, Dr. Govil helps them regain a better quality of life. “My goal is to accurately diagnose the cause of pain, decrease the pain and enhance our patients’ performance and level of activity without surgery, whenever possible,” Dr. Govil explained. “In many cases surgery isn’t indicated, and the therapies we offer are all that’s needed. For some post-surgery patients, chronic pain management is required.” Typically a treatment plan is developed that can be carried out by the patient with the help of Piedmont HealthCare’s Bone & Joint team. Dr. 14

IREDELL LIVING • DECEMBER 2010

Govil can treat disabling conditions at any age throughout a person’s lifetime. “About 50% of our patients are older people with aging or chronic issues,” Dr. Govil said. “But some younger patients get certain conditions earlier in life or have had injuries that require pain management.”

Small improvements in their daily life are very important, like getting around the house without discomfort or doing activities they enjoy easily and comfortably. These improvements in daily life make a huge difference to them and often prevent depression and enhance general well being.”

Relief from pain can be experienced through many different treatment methods, depending on the cause–trauma, injury, old age, disease processes– the location, and the type of pain. Dr. Govil has a number of advanced treatment options that he can prescribe: physical therapy, aquatic therapy, pain medications, electric stimulation and pain relieving procedures. Some common pain relief procedures are epidural injections, nerve blocks, facet blocks, and hip or knee joint injections. “My goal for patients is a better quality of life though a combination of pain management modalities,” he told me. “Many older patients can’t have surgery, and they require a different approach.

The Piedmont HealthCare Team With over 130 highly skilled physicians and providers and 700 medical professionals, Piedmont HealthCare is one of the largest physician-owned and directed, multi-specialty groups in North Carolina and the Southeast region. You’ll see their signature green signs throughout Iredell and the surrounding counties at 40 convenient office locations. A Word From The Greater Statesville Chamber of Commerce

Those Things For Which We Are Thankful In thinking about how we might close out the year of writing for Iredell Living, the urge struck me to simply note those things about which we are thankful. Then my manly side kicked in chiding, “That’s too cliché, too sentimental, too….overdone.” The truth is, though, I believe that our world seems to have gotten too callous and less grateful. This has been an incredibly tumultuous year for many of us. If the choice is to wallow in the tub of calamity or to find comfort in the embrace of the bright, sometimes little, things in life – let’s choose the latter. Many of us believed that “if we can only get through 2009, we’ll be alright”. As it turned out, 2010 was actually more difficult. Through the perspective of a Chamber, largely driven by membership, we force ourselves to take a more ardent look at the programs we undertake. We have pushed ourselves to, every single day, consider our relevancy in a changing world. We are grateful for the chance to re-create the organization and its initiatives. We do expect 2011 to be a year of increased private economic prosperity, but we recognize that public resources will be taxed more than ever. We are grateful for the creation of partnerships within the community. One of the ways in which the area’s community development organizations have flourished has been in simply working together. We have seen and been involved with many partners, those seeking to accomplish a similar outcome in an initiative, coming to the table to determine how we best utilize diminishing resources. In Statesville, for instance, the branding campaign under which

we have been working for the past four months could not have happened without the partnership of City of Statesville, Downtown Statesville Development Corporation, Statesville Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Greater Statesville Development Corporation. We are grateful for the incredible insight of visionaries with whom we work. Simply in the last few months, we have seen dreams take giant steps into the world of reality: • The Engineered Sintered Components/ Town of Troutman Park is much closer to groundbreaking. This 32-acre complex will relieve some strains from lack of recreational facilities in central Iredell County. • The Downtown/Highway 115 Corridor Master Plan appears to be ready to go. This extraordinary initiative is designed to rejuvenate what can be great economic engines in this community. • The Leader in Me program at four area schools as well as the educational initiative through the United Way, in partnership with the Iredell Statesville Schools, is showing dramatic effects only 2 months into the program. This community is blessed with a spirit of volunteerism. In the last few weeks with the three major initiatives with which the Chamber has been involved (Carolina BalloonFest, Crossroads PumpkinFest and Dancing with the Iredell Stars), over 360 people have volunteered their time and efforts to make these events successful. The sense of service is pervasive in this fine community. We are also thankful for constructive

criticism. When people take the time and effort to let us know how their expectations have not been met, we take it very seriously. Everyday there must be a lesson to be learned. Occasionally, the critiques come across as less than constructive, but there is still some nugget from which we grow. Most importantly, we are grateful to live, work and play in a community that is easy to love. We don’t live in Camelot, but we are a lot closer to it than we sometimes give ourselves credit. We have made it through, thus far, a chaotic economic period, the likes of which we haven’t seen in a few generations. We’ve all had bumps and bruises but this community, in a true test of character, has continued to stand tall and smile. We may have been dealt some lemons but the lemonade has never tasted so sweet.

A Vision Paints A Picture Of The Future The mission of the Mooresville-South Iredell Chamber of Commerce is to serve as the community champion and advocate for business. Chamber and town leadership recently participated in a day-long planning retreat to focus on the long-term strategic plan for the organization. The mission of the Chamber was held prominently in the center of all discussion. When planning, a vision paints a picture of what is outlined for the future, however the crucial why is in the organization’s mission. Routinely offered up as interchangeable, the mission and vision are not. When the two are mixed up, not only is it confusing, but the organization misses the chance to get its far more critical mission into peoples’ hearts and minds. The mission is the reason undergirding an entity’s very existence. The Mooresville Chamber was first established in 1916 “for the purpose of uniting people into a band of laborers that will work in the best interest of the town.” Today, nearly one hundred years later, the Chamber continues to serve in a similar capacity while reflecting drastic changes in the local economy, our community, and our society. What many folks in our community do not realize is that the Chamber is a 30 20

IREDELL IREDELLLIVING LIVING••DECEMBER DECEMBER2010 2010

non-profit business organization purely dependent upon the financial and volunteer resources of our members. Having a culture in which people feel valued and appreciated is a big part of what creates an organization of excellence. Words of support between colleagues, and opportunities for them to work together, will go a long way toward making that culture a reality. In addition to the value it brings the organization, it’s meaningful for each of us as individuals too.

tiatives will continue to be an emphasis for us as we strive to assist business owners and their employees to be the best that they can be for their enterprises. The network must continue to grow and strengthen so that the diversity of resources available creates sustainable development for our community. Last but certainly not least, as the “go to” organization for solutions, we will continuously examine our committees and programs to remain in sync with the challenges that our businesses face and the demands of our changing community.

Topics for the interactive discussion at the Chamber’s retreat included job creation, economic growth and revitalizing our community, planning for infrastructure, the importance of creating loyalty among our members, and the development of the tools and resources necessary for the Chamber’s operation. A session on the connection between leadership and stewardship truly shed a spotlight on how blessed we are with outstanding servant leaders in the Mooresville-Lake Norman region. The strategic pathways that will incorporate much of what was proposed include looking at best practices on how we provide information, especially regarding policies, issues and economic trends.
