Revitalize With

When I spoke with Courtney Browning, PA-C about Vitality Anti-Aging Center’s experiences over the past year, she shared several innovative new treatments they have introduced. And, the Center has also opened a new location in Belmont. It’s been a busy year for the Center, including continued awards for owner Grace McLaurin, who was selected once again as one of the top 100 Best Aesthetics Providers in the USA.

Courtney said that Vitality Anti-Aging Center offers the safest, most effective treatments, and the Center is “where health and beauty meet.” Vitality Anti-Aging Center com-

bines functional medicine, bio-identical hormones, weight loss programs, and aesthetics to provide a holistic antiaging result.

Effective, Innovative New Treatments, Including Tixel

The Center recently introduced a new device that can treat wrinkles, scarring, sun damage, and hyperpigmentation, Tixel. Tixel is a heated device that works through non-sharp cones (unlike needles) that doesn’t pierce the skin. Instead, it creates a channel in the skin that can build collagen and stimulate natural healing.

One of the best features of Tixel is that it can treat all skin types: there are few patients who aren’t good candidates for Tixel’s safe, effective treatment. Courtney Browning said that it can be used safely on patients with darker skin, as well as current acne sufferers and people with melasma. Patients experience little downtime after treatments with Tixel, Courtney said. “They only experience a little redness.”

The Center has also upgraded their laser treatment options with Helix, which combines CO2 and 1570 lasers into one machine that can be used separately or together for completely individualized treatment. The lasers work by targeting water in the skin. Courtney explained that they form a small, controlled wound that builds collagen in the skin, which can reduce wrinkles and improve skin texture. The Helix laser can also treat scars and sun damage. One option with the Helix laser is a cool peel, which is a very light treatment for skin resurfacing or maintenance, which leaves only a day or two of redness.

V-Lean Weight Loss Program

Vitality Anti-Aging Center is now offering compounded semaglutide treatments for weight loss as part of its V-Lean weight loss program. This innovative treatment is rapidly gaining popularity because it helps to control hunger, reduce cravings, and promotes a feeling of fullness. The substantial weight loss that can be achieved through compounded semaglutide is sustainable, enabling people to maintain a healthier weight long term.

Vitality provides personalized dosages of the medication along with a complete program that begins with a thorough medical evaluation and assessment, followed by a personalized treatment plan. Patients will receive ongoing medical supervision throughout the program, and holistic support. If you’ve been thinking about trying semaglutide for weight loss, Vitality Anti-Aging Center’s holistic V-Lean program is an optimal choice.

One reason patients should consider weight loss programs like those offered by Vitality Anti-Aging Center is the support they will receive through weekly visits and check-ins. Courtney mentioned that some patients have received three-month prescriptions for weight loss medications like semaglutide and similar GLP-1 agonists without support for a program of nutritious diet and corresponding exercise. Without proper support, the rapid weight loss caused by these medications can potentially lead to muscle wasting.

“Our muscles are essential,” Courtney said. As we age, we naturally lose muscle mass, up to 5% or even 8% per de-

cade. Healthy aging already includes recommendations for strength training to maintain muscle, and Vitality Anti-Aging Center is able to provide personalized treatment with compounded semaglutide for healthy weight loss that preserves muscles.

Less Downtime and Faster Healing

Courtney said that it was an exciting time in aesthetics and anti-aging because so many innovations in post-treatment care and topical applications have emerged. “In the past, we’d use PRP following treatments,” Courtney told me. PRP, or platelet rich plasma, is made from the plasma of our own blood, which clinicians withdraw at the time of PRP therapy.

Now, Vitality Anti-Aging has PDGF, aka platelet derived growth factor, which is 300,000 times more potent than PRP. PDGF is made from banked platelets which are cleaned and refined into a powerful healing protein. There are four FDA approvals for injected PDGF, and it reduces downtime and stimulates collagen production for better healing. Along with other new technologies like exosomes, there are so many new and emerging treatments that can help with anti-aging, acne, and many other skin concerns. Vitality Anti-Aging Center also offers many types of topical skin care and can advise patients on their optimal choices.

Grand Opening in Belmont and Annual Open House

Vitality Anti-Aging opened its second office this year in Belmont, and held the grand opening on September 12. Staff members at the Belmont office include Emily Goodrich, NP-C, Jessica Stevenson, PA-C, and Lauren Frogge, office manager.

The Hickory practice is also holding its annual open house November 7, and looks forward to another exciting and rewarding day of education, information, door prizes, and swag bags filled with gifts.

“We shut down on this day,” Courtney said. “Our entire staff educates guests on procedures and services.” Last year’s popular food truck will be returning this year, a mobile boutique, and other vendors will also be there, so you can enjoy delicious food and shop as you learn about new antiaging treatments and receive specials on services. This is also the perfect time to get holiday gifts for your loved ones and friends, as gift certificates will be available.

Experienced, Effective Physical Therapy and Training

Dr. Jeff Smith from Biokinetics Rehab said, “Oftentimes, people think of physical therapy as a necessary step following surgery, which it is, or when they’re already in pain, but the important thing to realize is physical therapy can often decrease the need for future surgeries.” Physical therapy is one of the services offered by Biokinetics Rehab, a new practice in Hickory which offers care that’s individually tailored to specific client needs.

Responsive, Individualized, and Effective Services

Past client Brian, who had multiple injuries and surgeries, said “Jeff is an amazing clinician, but he is also a great listener, empathetic, and attentive to detail.”

Dr. Smith explained that his practice delivers individualized care without the

need for physician referral, and does not require insurance authorizations. “You don’t have to wait weeks for an appointment,” said Dr. Smith. “We will make every attempt to get you seen within 24 to 48 hours.”

All Biokinetics Rehab sessions are one-onone. You will also see the same therapist for 60 minutes every time you attend a physical therapy session. Dr. Smith added, “We will ensure that you have the necessary tools and confidence to carry on in life, being able to recognize when we are needed but not dependent upon us to ‘fix’ you.”

ing, increase muscular strength, and speed bone healing after fractures or in patients with osteoporosis. He is certified in dry needling, which can decrease tightness, increase blood flow, and reduce pain in muscles and joints. In addition to other manual therapy interventions, Dr. Smith also provides cupping therapy.

In the area of wellness, the practice has two cold plunge tubs, a three-person infrared sauna, and compression sleeves. These resources help to decrease inflammation, reduce muscle soreness and joint pain, and boost the immune system.

has pelvic health training from the Herman and Wallace Pelvic Rehabilitation Institute and the Institute of Clinical Excellence, and has a specialty certification in Pregnancy and Postpartum Corrective Exercise. Also on staff is Warren McAlpine, a former athlete and competitive powerlifter. Warren works holistically with athletes and active adults who want to improve their functional abilities. The practice looks to add more trainers and massage, nutrition, and wellness coaching.

Recommendations For Staying Well and Fit Over the Holidays

“We are entering the time of year where people are completing tasks that they don’t typically work on,” Dr. Smith said. “Decorating for the holidays, moving boxes, and splitting firewood can all carry a risk of strain or injury. In addition, there are so many events taking place that it’s easy to overlook taking care of ourselves.”

With decades of experience in health and fitness, Dr. Jeff Smith has created a facility that includes the equipment, staff and services that a wide range of people can benefit from to not just recover after injuries, but also prevent future injuries with proper training on postural awareness and body mechanics to complete everyday demands in life.

Celebrating Our Pets

For many of us, our families wouldn’t be complete without our beloved pets. We care for them just as we would any other family member. However, there are many lovable creatures in our shelters that have a lot of love to offer, but no home. Shelters are struggling to keep up with over-population, so if you are considering getting a pet, check with the Humane Society of Catawba County first.

In honor of our pets, I encourage our readers to get involved. Donations, volunteering, adoption, and foster care for animals are all opportunities for us to make a difference.

Preparing for Your First Pet

5 Tips for New Pet Owners

Welcoming a new pet into your family can be an exciting addition, but preparation is required to provide a loving home and enjoy the unconditional love of a four-legged family member.

To help prepare your furry friend for the transition to a new living arrangement, consider these essential tips for first-time pet owners.

Choose the Right Pet for Your Lifestyle

When getting a pet for the first time, it’s crucial to select one that fits your lifestyle. Consider your living situation, work schedule and personal preferences. Research different breeds to find the one that matches your activity level, living space and family dynamics. Some pets require more exercise and attention while others are more independent. Also consider any allergies or sensitivities you or your family members may have as some pets may trigger allergies or asthma symptoms.

Set Up Your Home

Before bringing your new pet home, create a safe and comfortable environment. Start by pet-proofing your home, removing any hazardous substances and securing loose wires or cords.

Make sure to store cleaning supplies, medications and toxic plants out of reach. Provide a designated space that includes a cozy bed or crate, food and water bowls and toys. Cats may need a litter box, scratching post and place to climb or hide. Dogs may require a fenced yard or designated area for bathroom breaks. Also consider restricting access to certain areas of your home, especially during the initial adjustment period, with a pet gate to help prevent accidents or damage to belongings.

Create a Routine

Pets thrive on routine. Establish a consistent schedule for feeding, exercise and bathroom breaks. Determine the appropriate amount and frequency of meals for your pet’s age, size and breed. Dogs may require daily walks, playtime or trips to the dog park. Cats can benefit from interactive toys and vertical spaces like cat trees. Remember to spend quality time with your pet every day, providing attention, affection and mental stimulation, which can help strengthen the bond between you and your pet and ensure overall happiness and well-being.

Budget for Your Pet’s Needs

Owning a pet comes with financial responsibilities. Consider the costs

of food, grooming, veterinary care, vaccinations and preventive medications, factoring in research based on the average costs of owning a pet of your chosen breed. Additionally, factor in the cost of toys, bedding, litter and other supplies. It’s also recommended to set aside a contingency fund for unexpected veterinary bills or emergencies that may arise.

Find a Reliable Veterinarian

Regular check-ups and open communication with a local veterinarian can help detect any potential health issues early and ensure your pet receives the best possible care. When searching for a provider, ask friends, family or neighbors who have pets for recommendations and read reviews before scheduling visits to potential veterinarians’ offices to meet the staffs, tour the facilities and ask any questions you may have. Ensure the veterinarian offers a wide range of services, including preventive care, vaccinations, spaying/ neutering, dental care and emergency services. Consider the location and hours of operation to ensure convenience and accessibility for routine visits and emergencies.

Does Your Pet Have Anxiety?

Anxiety in pets, like humans, can vary in intensity and symptoms. While some pets isolate themselves, others may chew up the cushions on your sofa! It is certainly uncomfortable for the animals, and can be very problematic for their owners.

This article addresses how to recognize the symptoms, discusses potential causes, and offers suggestions for possible solutions. Of course, an appointment with your veterinarian may be necessary to rule out other medical conditions that could be causing their symptoms.

Symptoms

Identifying anxiety in dogs can be challenging as the symptoms can vary widely. Here are some common signs that may indicate a dog is experiencing anxiety:

1. Excessive Barking or Howling: Dogs with anxiety may be more vocal than usual, especially when left alone or in stressful situations.

2. Destructive Behavior: Chewing, digging, or scratching at doors and windows can be a sign of separation anxiety or stress.

3. Pacing or Restlessness: An anxious dog might walk back and forth or have difficulty settling down.

4. Shaking or Trembling: Physical symptoms like shaking can be a direct response to anxiety or fear.

5. Panting and Drooling: Excessive panting and drooling, especially when it isn’t hot, can indicate stress.

6. Loss of Appetite: Changes in eating habits, such as not eating or eating less, can be a sign of anxiety.

7. Excessive Grooming: Dogs may lick or chew their paws excessively, leading to skin infections.

8. Withdrawal: An anxious dog may become less interactive or hide.

Causes of Anxiety

To treat anxiety effectively, you will need to determine the root causes. Common causes include:

1. Separation Anxiety: This occurs if your pet becomes distressed when separated from its owner or left alone. It’s often seen in animals who have been rehomed or have developed a strong attachment to their owner.

2. Fear of Loud Noises: Fireworks, thunderstorms, and other loud noises can be a trigger for anxiety.

3. Change in Routine: Any significant change in routine, such as moving to a new home or alterations in daily schedules, can cause stress.

4. Lack of Socialization: Dogs that have not been properly socialized may be more prone to anxiety when exposed to new people, animals, or environments.

5. Medical Conditions: Certain medical issues can mimic or exacerbate anxiety symptoms. It’s important to rule out health problems with your veterinarian.

6. Previous Trauma: Dogs with a history of abuse or traumatic experiences may exhibit anxietyrelated behaviors.

Solutions for Managing Anxiety

Addressing anxiety in dogs involves a combination of behavioral, environmental, and, if necessary, medical interventions:

1. Create a Safe Space: Designate a quiet, comfortable area where your pet can retreat when feeling anxious. This space should be free of disturbances and equipped with their favorite toys or bedding.

2. Establish a Routine: Consistent routines can provide a sense of security. Regular feeding times, exercise, and playtime can help reduce anxiety.

3. Gradual Desensitization: For separation anxiety, gradually accustom your dog to being alone for short periods, increasing the duration as they become more comfortable.

4. Use Positive Reinforcement: Reward calm behavior and use treats or praise to reinforce positive responses to stressful situations.

5. Mental and Physical Stimulation: Engage your dog in regular exercise and provide interactive toys or puzzle feeders to keep their mind occupied and reduce anxiety.

6. Training and Socialization: Enroll your pet in obedience classes or socialization groups to help them become more comfortable with new experiences and environments.

7. Consult a Veterinarian: If anxiety is severe or persistent, consult your veterinarian. They can help rule out medical issues and may recommend behavioral therapies or medications if necessary. CBD oil has worked for some, but you will need to check with your veterinarian to determine how much to give them. Also, you will want to purchase one specifically made for animals instead of humans.

8. Consider Professional Help: In cases where anxiety is profound, working with a certified animal trainer who specializes in anxiety disorders can be beneficial.

Recognizing and addressing anxiety in our pets is essential for their health and happiness. By understanding the symptoms, identifying the causes, and implementing appropriate solutions, you can help your furry companion lead a more relaxed and fulfilling life. If you suspect your pet is struggling with anxiety, don’t hesitate to speak with your veterinarian to ensure they receive the support they need.

Chunky Apple Cinnamon Muffins

You will love these apple cinnamon muffins that have fresh apple chunks baked into them and a cinnamon sugar topping, keeping them perfectly moist and packed with apple flavor. Another reason to love these muffins is their gorgeous bakerystyle domed tops. So grab some sweet and juicy apples, and welcome fall with these beautiful Chunky Apple Cinnamon Muffins!

Chunky Apple Cinnamon Muffins

Servings: 6 • Prep time: 15 minutes

INGREDIENTS:

Cooking time: 23 minutes

1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1/4 cup brown sugar

1 tsp. cinnamon

1 tsp. baking powder

1/4 tsp. salt

1 large egg

1/4 cup + 2 Tbsp. buttermilk

1/4 cup vegetable oil

1 tsp. vanilla extract

1 cup diced apples, cut into half-inch chunks

CINNAMON SUGAR TOPPING

1 Tbsp. unsalted butter, melted

1-1/2 tsp. cinnamon

2 Tbsp. granulated sugar

INSTRUCTIONS

Preheat the oven to 425º. Peel and dice an apple into half-inch chunks. You want 1 cup of diced apples. Set aside. In a mixing bowl, combine flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, baking powder and salt. Stir with a spoon to combine and set aside.

In a larger mixing bowl, combine egg, buttermilk, vegetable oil and vanilla extract. Stir to combine. Gradually mix in the dry ingredients and the apple chunks, mixing just until combined. Cover the bowl with a towel and allow the batter to rest for 15 minutes.

For bakery style muffin tops, line a 12-count muffin pan with 6 muffin liners, only filling every other muffin well with batter. Fully fill each muffin liner, and mound more on top. This is how you get the domed top! Bake muffins for 7 minutes at 425º initially. Then, while muffins remain in the oven, turn the temperature down to 350º and bake for an additional 16-18 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Remove muffins from the oven and allow to cool in the pan for 15 minutes before removing. Once the muffins are cool, mix up the cinnamon sugar topping. Melt butter in the microwave and use a pastry brush to brush the melted butter on top of the muffins, then roll the top of each muffin in a bowl of cinnamon sugar. Enjoy!
