LIVING Living the Good Life

Welcome to the February issue of Hickory Living Magazine. Let’s hope no one sees a groundhog’s shadow on the 2nd or we will have 42 more days of winter! I love to see it snow once in a while, but I am ready for spring and warmer weather! How about you? February is National Heart Month. Lifestyle factors can be a major part of preventing heart disease. Eating right, exercising and quitting smoking can all help you in managing your risk factors, as well as keeping your weight, blood pressure and cholesterol in check. I hope you made a few heart healthy resolutions this year and are following through with them. Valentine’s Day falls on Monday, February 14th. Whether you celebrate the weekend before or on the 14th, shower your special someone with all their holiday favorites! You will find plenty of events in February. The Hickory Community Theatre presents Charlie Cox Runs With Scissors in the Firemen’s Kitchen. Check out the Chamber's website for short classes presented by CVCC’s Small Business Center. I am personally looking forward to attending the Catawba County Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Meeting/Reception to be held on the 17th. Enjoy the final days of winter and thank you for reading the February issue of Hickory Living Magazine!

Hickory Day School: The Little School

That’s Big on Learning By Hunter Darden

Hickory Day School can be described in numerous ways, as the little school on the hill, Hickory’s International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program, the school that loves the arts, the “green” school, or the school where everybody knows your name. Anyway you say it, Hickory Day School is a special school community where administrators, parents, and teachers are committed to encouraging and supporting students as they pursue a rigorous educational experience that prepares them to be successful global citizens. Hickory Day School (HDS) is an independent, co-educational, non-sectarian school. It began in 1993, and in 2005 was authorized as an International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB-PYP) – a program that is implemented in only 12 schools in North Carolina. “The Primary Years Programme focuses on the development of the whole child as a thinker and an inquirer,” said Janice Dollar, head of school. “We encourage children to ask questions and to solve problems. Our units of study are planned around a central idea focusing on significant inquiries. The inquiry begins with questions like these: What do we know? What do we want to learn? How will we know what we have learned? How best will we learn? “As educators, we find that an inquirybased style of teaching motivates stu-

dents to explore real-life issues and to ask probing questions about their place in the world and their responsibilities as citizens of the world,” Mrs. Dollar added. “Although our curriculum is based on the N.C. Standards Course of Study, it integrates the broader perspectives of IB. The IB goal – and the HDS goal – is for our students to become lifelong learners who understand and appreciate their role as global citizens. When they leave our school, we want them to be wonderfully prepared for the IB Diploma Programme at Hickory High School or whatever secondary experience they choose. Ultimately, we believe our students’ educational experience will not only prepare them for an exciting and successful future, but will help them become knowledgeable and principled young people who will help create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.” The HDS student-teacher ratio averages 7:1, allowing every student to receive individual attention and guidance in educational and personal development. In core subjects – reading, writing, math and science – teachers have time to answer questions, explore interests, and evaluate progress on a daily basis. As students move through the elementary school years, teachers keep a portfolio of samples of their work to document their academic growth and serve as a vehicle for reflection on their progress.

Because of the HDS emphasis on a diverse and enriched educational experience, teachers in specialty cocurricular areas of study also regularly interact with students in every class. All students have art, music, and drama at least twice every week, and they have Spanish and wellness classes daily. These activities encourage students to discover and develop their talents and interests and to learn to express themselves in meaningful ways… all the while, making memories that will stay etched in their minds for a lifetime. The HDS school community is a strong one with students, teachers, parents, and administrators all playing important roles in making the educational environment a unique blend of academic rigor and family-like warmth and support. The student population is diverse, including students whose families come from various regions of the United States, as well as from other countries around the world. As a school, HDS promotes positive affirmation and the value of not judging others, and discipline problems are practically non-existent. If students do have to make a little trip to the office, they are treated with respect as they come up with a plan for resolution of the 14

HICKORY HICKORYLIVING LIVING••FEBRUARY FEBRUARY2011 2011

problem that brought them there. They are asked to think of other choices they could have made and to consider how they could have handled the situation better. According to Mrs. Dollar, “They know we love them. We respect the children and know their potential and capabilities.” The great return is that these students thrive on learning. On any given day, parent volunteers are on campus offering invaluable services that help make life on campus run smoothly. The corps of “lunch ladies and lads” serve a smile with every plate and get to interact with all the children. Parents are always on call to drive students to field studies, and on occasion, volunteers come to the classroom to share their particular skills, interests, or expertise with HDS students. Other volunteers keep the buildings and grounds safe, clean, and attractive. Last spring they added raised beds where first-through-fourth graders planted broccoli and cabbages and made plans for a spring planting. Environmental responsibility is important at HDS, and “going green” is more than a slogan. Parent volunteers help winterize the building to save energy; students bring lunches in re-usable containers

to decrease the trash we send to the landfill; and sustainability is a familiar topic in classes at every level. The parents invite us to educate their children,” Mrs. Dollar said. “Their support is critical to the success of our efforts.” To aid in developing well-rounded students, the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program reflects perspectives that characterize quality schools around the world. The program utilizes extensive knowledge learned from many national systems in profiling the philosophical methods they advocate and the qualities they seek to instill in students. Students who are part of an IB program at any level are encouraged to be the following: Inquirers, Thinkers, Communicators, Risk takers, Knowledgeable, Principled, Caring, Open-Minded, Well-balanced, and Reflective. Student Tia Sparks spoke highly of the PYP program saying, “There is room for individual growth. We adjust it to our own preferences.” They have become pros at learning from each other. The teachers commented that they, in turn,

HDS students are also developing a love for theater and the arts. One student found a new love of dancing and singing. Another student spoke of discovering his ability to sing well. Budding poets are also emerging, as they look for new ways to express their creativity. They have also sampled the merging world of science and literature. They have enjoyed creating graphic novels by incorporating their favorite books into their own storylines and plots. Students regularly use the technology lab equipped with a variety of computers for learning through digital media. Mrs. Dollar explained that “technology is not just a class. It’s a tool.” Amy Chang, President of the Board of Trustees, said, “Hickory Day School is my partner for raising my children. The teachers are collaborative, cohesive and invested because they love our students. Janice (Dollar) is great at inspiring the staff. She is the cornerstone of this school.”

Shane Greene Photography © 2011

One student spoke of having transferred from a public school where she had been bullied. It had left her with no confidence. After transferring to Hickory Day School, she began to ask more questions and started to enjoy school. They relish exploring their imaginations and do so by projects such as creating their own inventions. One student created a car fun-pack equipped with all that is necessary for a long excursion.

learned from the students. The older and younger students enjoy interacting with each other and explore commonalities, as they mesh well together.

John F. Kennedy once said, “Children are the world’s most valuable resource and its best hope for the future.” Hickory Day School is certainly on the right track for molding our best hope for the future.

Why Katheryn Harlan calls February 14th Thanksgiving day. On Valentine’s Day 2003, Katheryn was anticipating a new yoga mat. Instead, she got the results of her mammogram. She had cancer. Ironically, the doctor who delivered the news was none other than her husband, Steve. Katheryn was at first devastated, then thankful that the disease had been detected early. This prompted her to think about the many women who don’t have access to screening examinations, which eventually led to the creation of her non-profit organization, Through Healing Eyes. Each year Through Healing Eyes sells inspirational and educational calendars featuring local breast cancer survivors, returning all the proceeds to the community so that more women can have access to breast health through education, screenings, early diagnosis and treatment. But Through Healing Eyes could not have funded any of these without the generosity of those who have contributed or purchased calendars. A special THANK YOU to all of our sponsors – too many to be named here. So as February 14th rolls around again this year, Katheryn and the hundreds of other women who benefited through calendar sales will be celebrating not just Valentine’s Day, but life itself. To learn more about Through Healing Eyes, visit their website at www.throughhealingeyes.org.

HICKORY THEN Juan Pardo and Jaora

By Ann Chandonnet Photos: Archeologist with the Exploring Joara Foundation opens the Berry Site once a year to the public. If Spanish explorer Juan Pardo had had his way, Hickory might be "San Juan" and we all might speak Spanish. History textbooks record Sir Walter Raleigh's expedition to the Outer Banks in 1585, but Spanish activities in La Florida and elsewhere make Raleigh look like Johnny-Come-Lately. Hernando de Soto visited the Catawba River Basin in 1540. Later Captain Pardo actually made two expeditions to the same sites. The first lasted from December 1, 1566, to March 7, 1567. Pardo and 125 men traveled north from Santa Elena (Tybee Island, Geor18

HICKORY LIVING • FEBRUARY 2011

gia) into the Catawba Valley. His main object was to find dependable sources of food for Santa Elena and establish caches of food along his route. Pardo stopped at Yssa (near modern Linville, N.C.) and then at Jaora, an Indian village near modern Morganton. Pardo decided that prosperous Jaora, with its large cultivated fields of bottom land, was a good place to establish a base. Jaora was a Talula, a one-mound regional center, governed by an orata, "one who makes things happen." Known as The Berry Site, the large town was occupied from about A.D. 1400 to 1600. Joara's ceremonial earthen mound was plowed under by later farmers. But similar mounds, influenced by

Inca structures, are still visible at the Peachtree Site, 5 miles south of Murphy, N.C., and the Quanasse Site near Hayesville. Mulberry Creek in Caldwell County is also being excavated. Some of the most impressive mounds stand near St. Louis, Missouri. Pardo and his men constructed a primitive outpost dubbed Fort San Juan. He assigned Sergeant Hernando Moyano de Morales and 30 men to garrison the fort, burned remains of which remain today. Pardo and his remaining force followed the Catawba River and eventually visited Quinahaqui (near Catawba) and Guatari (near Salisbury). At each town, Pardo met with the local cacique (tribal leader) and through an interpreter informed residents that they were now

Spanish subjects. At first, things went well at Fort San Juan. Back at Santa Elena, General Pedro Menendez de Aviles ordered Pardo back into the field. On September 1, 1567, Pardo set out with 90 to 120 men, seeking a route to silver mines at Zacatecas, Mexico.

Celebrating 10 years of

Lighting the Path to “Solutions” for Life’s Difficult Moments

Arriving at Jaora, he learned that Moyano had encountered trouble with unfriendly natives. The five Spanish dwellings were deserted. He stopped at the villages of Tacoe (near Asheville) and Cauchi (near Marshall) on his way to East Tennessee. Pardo's second expedition returned to Santa Elena on March 2, 1568, roadweary and without finding a road to Zacatecas. The Berry Site has been excavated by the Exploring Joara Foundation, Warren Wilson College and Western Piedmont Community College as part of a long-term archeological research project in the Western Piedmont. The site is open one day a year to the public. Pottery shards and projectile points were displayed at a field day last June 26. Inside The Chamber Did You Know?

Did you know… that you can join the Chamber as an individual (non-business related) member for $150 a year? This is our second “Did You Know?” statement in our new weekly campaign series scheduled throughout 2011. The Chamber plans to communicate, through all of our social media, event/ services/programming outlets the unique, creative, innovative, entrepreneurial and most certainly factual and positive statements about this Chamber and Catawba County. This campaign’s purpose is to bring positive and optimistic news to our members and the community at large that we can be proud of, in awe of and want to spread the word about to our family, friends, business associates, employees, customers, suppliers, vendors– you name it! More on our invitation to membership. Open individual enrollment in the Chamber is an opportunity for community engagement for senior ac-

tive adults, teachers, faculty members, employees (other than current associate Chamber members), citizens at large, etc. to become involved and partner with the business community to improve our quality of life and address the major business, education and governmental issues affecting Catawba County. Your opportunities for participation would include: an individual membership listing on our Chamber web site and Membership Directory; community engagement with job creation and retention; advocacy for business and community quality of life issues; networking events that would open up new personal and professional contacts; participation in special Chamber events usually open to Members Only; leadership/community development training; strategic planning for Catawba County; public education/higher educational programming; workforce development issues; small business development/ mentoring/brainstorming; social media/ communications with other members/ community issues; and interaction with

local, state and national political, government and business leaders. Finally, your participation will help to create more collaboration and energy and an environment that encourages fresh approaches to, and increased interest in, shared problems and opportunities. It’s your community, too. Why not give us a try? Be heard. Contact Lindsay Keisler at the Chamber at 828 328-6000, Ext. 238.
