This year has passed too quickly. It seems like only a few weeks ago that we were talking about New Year’s Resolutions for 2010 and wishing everyone a happy, prosperous New Year. Now, 2011 is almost here. Downtown Hickory will once again come alive in early December for this Holiday Season. The Hickory Holiday Parade, sponsored by the Hickory Jaycees, will be held on Saturday, December 4th at 4 PM. Also, A Hickory Holiday, hosted by HDDA, will be held on Thursday, December 9th from 5:30 PM until 7:30 PM. Please check their website for additional details and events. This Holiday Season, it is more important than ever to shop with our local merchants. Money spent in Catawba County stays here and benefits our local economy. Please find a way to help those less fortunate in this season of giving. We can all do something and your contribution, whether volunteering your time or making a monetary donation, will make a difference to those in need. “When we remodeled our home, I drove from one store to the next,” Anne Wepner explained. “At one place, I’d find bathroom light fixtures. Then I had to go somewhere else to find faucets. Finally finding bathroom mirrors at another store, I wondered if any of it would match when I got it all home.” From their own personal experience, Anne and her two daughters, Grace Wepner Ludtke and Nell Wepner, understand the challenges of coordinating a new home construction, a remodeling or redecorating project. They’ll order from other plumbing companies, if you like, and have many sources for decorative vanities and sinks. “The business is growing rapidly,” Grace said. “We’re adding a selection of area rugs and occasional furniture. And we’re showing new water features for indoors or out.” Along with many types of specialty light bulbs, lamps and shades, the store has some unique ideas. “We have ‘bling’ for your lights and lamps,” Nell said. “It’s called light charms–they easily and inexpensively add sparkle to any room! We offer customizable art work designed to match your color scheme or include your personal stylized monogram–they’re perfect gifts,” Nell added. Serving the Customer is Everything Excellent customer service is critical at Fixtures & more, where each employee completes training through the American Lighting Association. “We believe that each customer is important, whether they are working on an entire
house or office, or simply purchasing one item,” Anne shared. “Our sales and service team takes its work seriously. They take pride in helping customers make just the right decisions. We treat our customers like family, with a friendly approach, and it shows in the compliments we get.” Community Partners There’s a strong interest in being involved in positive ways in the local community. “We are happy to be able to create jobs here in Newton,” Anne explained, “and we feel good about refurbishing commercial space that had become vacant.” Fixtures & more was involved in the Soldiers Reunion festivities last August. On December 22nd, the store will sponsor It’s a Wonderful Life: Live from WVL Radio Theatre at the Newton-Conover Auditorium, where Anne serves on the board of directors. The beautiful display of trees will be open to the public throughout the holiday season. “This is our vision of my great-grandfather’s entrepreneurial dream,” Grace remarked. “I like coming to work because everything sparkles. Inside The Chamber Wanna Create Jobs? It’s the Startups!
If Catawba County wants to really jump start job creation, then we really should look at helping start up companies and cultivating local small business expansions. It’s true that small businesses do generate most jobs. However, if we define “small” by age rather than by size, then young firms (fewer than five years old) primarily create the job growth. Startups account for only 3 percent of total U.S private employment, but generate 20 percent of total gross job creation. By contrast, firms 10 years or older with more than 500 workers account for 45 percent of the private sector, but also 40 percent of job creation and destruction. In other words, startups proportionally generate far more jobs in relation to its slice of U.S. employment than large companies, which also cut jobs nearly as much as they create them. Startups are risky which means they destroy a lot of jobs when they get sold or fail. However, the surviving companies grow much more rapidly than the rest of the economy. So it perhaps makes sense that we enact policies to increase the odds they will survive. Americans love small businesses and admire the job-creating spirit and independence of entrepreneurial dreamers. Aspiring business owners face a daunting amount of red tape and hassle. With job creation at the top of the local and national agenda, the time has come to use more diverse technology in making it easier to start a business in Catawba County.
Small businesses are the engine of job growth in the United States accounting for 2/3 of new jobs over the past 15 years. That’s why one way to spur desperately needed job creation in Catawba County would be to make the business of going into business and the registration process faster, easier and more customer friendly. Local governments have made great strides in improving their licensing, inspection and permitting processes. Congratulations and thank you for that effort. I am proposing that for a new and/or existing business wanting to startup or expand that they would only have to visit a single web site, thus creating a one-stop shop for business registration. This portal would incorporate all local and state business registration requirements with interactive components, modeled along the lines of TurboTax, with wizards/dialogue boxes, and with the registration process asking questions, demonstrating intelligence and providing constructive guidance and advice. It should be smart enough to recognize, “You’re registering an electricians business with 10 employees. We recommend a sole proprietorship as the corporate form of governance.” It wouldn’t have just a bunch of links where one can learn more about different corporate forms. It would give advice based upon the information the registrant is entering, in part by tapping
into a data base with insights on how other similar businesses are structured. It would bring information forward to the registrant about whether there are loan programs the business is eligible for, or information about lines of credit from local commercial lenders, or the system would tie into county, city and state organizations/agencies like the Chamber, the Small Business Center at CVCC, the Economic Development Corporation, local planning departments along with their inspections, licensing and permitting departments, the Small Business Technology and Development Center, the Small Business Administration, NC Department of Commerce, local business consultants, etc. My wish may come true with the development of our new portal web site for Catawba County being created now by Pixelspace. Houston Harris, can you make this idea work?
