The Best Mother’s Day Gift

Sunday, May 13th is Mother’s Day and an opportunity to let your Mom know how much you love and appreciate her, although, this should be more than a once a year event.

We all know the things our mothers have done for us in a practical sense, and may recognize many sacrifices they have made, from staying up all night when we ran a fever to doing our laundry and cooking our meals, or taking us to after-school activities and making sure we had what we needed to participate in those activities. What we probably don’t know are the internal struggles they have had walking a fine line between giving us our freedom while trying to keep us safe.

I used to tell my children that I wanted them to have as much fun as possible; I just wanted to make sure they were safe while doing whatever they wanted to do. That worked for a while until I made them vests out of an old comforter 8

HICKORY LIVING • MAY 2018

before they attended a paint ball park.

They patronized me and took the vests, but after their friends almost laughed them off the bus, they threw them away, swearing they would never listen to me again. We moms struggle between protecting and preparing our children, between letting them learn from their mistakes and preventing them from making mistakes that could have dire consequences. We moms don’t always make the wisest choices, but we always have our children’s best interests at heart.

So, just know this: a mother’s input lessens as we grow up to the point that her advice is no longer needed, but her internal struggle never stops. She may not express her opinion anymore, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t have one.

It doesn’t mean that she has stopped looking out for your best interest or stopped being concerned about the decisions you make or your safety. It just means that she is silently observing, waiting for you to ask for her opinion, and trying so hard not to interfere.

I often think of my own mother and how she was able to keep her sanity while raising five children without cell phones. If we wanted to call and check in, we had to call from someone’s home or from a phone booth. I don’t think she had much faith in me to make good decisions. After all, I gave her no reason to trust my judgement, but she had faith in a higher power to keep me safe. She no longer gives me curfews or rules to break, but she is still concerned about my life decisions.

This Mother’s Day, let her know how much you appreciate her love and lifelong effort to encourage your success and support you emotionally while you pursue your endeavors. Ask her advice occasionally; you may be surprised at what she has to offer. Most of all, make her proud by being the best you that you can be. The happiness and success of her children is a large part of her life’s work and the best Mother’s Day gift around!

“I recently had a patient say to me, ‘I went fishing for the first time in ten years,’” Dr. Martin Evans shared, “and that just about sums up the work I do—helping people get back to doing things they love to do…that’s what makes my day.” Dr. Evans is part of the dedicated team of healthcare providers at Southeast Pain & Spine Care. Dr. Evans and Dr. Troy Gingerich offer their specialty at Carolinas HealthCare System Blue Ridge locations in Valdese and Hickory. Helping patients achieve a better quality of life through pain management is their desired outcome, and they approach their task with experience and skill.

“Most people adjust their activities to correspond with their level of pain,” Dr. Evans explained. “A better goal is to elevate your level of functioning so that 12

you can go about your life with less pain. By diagnosing and evaluating the cause of pain, we can treat and manage it so that life becomes more livable. Even something simple, like going to church again, can be quite an accomplishment.”

WHO NEEDS PAIN MANAGEMENT? Lara Kessler had suffered for many years with various types of pain, from bursitis and arthritis, a ruptured disc and neck pain, to debilitating headaches and seizures. Even after seeing numerous doctors and taking medication, she had not found relief. “Dr. Evans was the first doctor who really listened to me and trusted that my pain was real,” she told me. “He genuinely cares, and his staff, too. I can keep up with my twins now— and I’m back to running and training for a marathon. I am amazed how my quality of life has improved.”

Patients come to Southeast Pain & Spine Care for various reasons. While many patients have new or chronic back pain, the causes of pain range from headaches and migraines to pain in the joints, extremities, or muscles, arthritis and bursitis, sciatica, fibromyalgia, diabetic nerve pain, to name a few. Pain following surgery, from cancer or other illness, from aging, or after an injury can be treated.

“Some patients are new referrals, but others have tried surgery or other treatments without the results they want,” Dr. Gingerich explained. “Our treatments are primarily non-surgical.

Seeing us first might eliminate the need for surgery. Non-

surgical treatment is especially beneficial for older patients who can’t have surgery. This means faster, easier recovery and quicker return to normal activities.” Patients, from their 20s to their 90s, benefit from an accurate diagnosis and an individualized treatment plan that can usually begin immediately.

Dr. Evans and Dr. Gingerich are both double board certified in anesthesiology and pain management. This certification is the highest level for pain management specialists.

MANAGING PAIN “Our goal is to use interventional, non-surgical procedures and minimal medication,” Dr. Evans continued. “As pain specialists, we understand and are in total compliance with guidelines regarding controlled medications. We complete a thorough history, physician assessment, and medical record review to make certain that patients understand all their treatment options. Many don’t use medications at all.” Indeed, dosages in pain management overall have been decreasing over the last five years. Use of injections, nerve ablation, and spinal cord stimulation devices is increasing and these treatments and others are selected when appropriate. In some cases, however, pain might need more than one treatment. “With appropriate prescribing and management, there needn’t be a stigma in taking medication for relief of chronic conditions—it can be a life saver,” Dr. Gingerich told me. “For that reason, it is important to work with your pain management doctor to find the best combination of treatments.”

Patients are often referred by their primary care physician, but can also be referred by a chiropractor, neurologist, orthopedist, rheumatologist, oncologist, or other specialist. Alternative modalities are sometimes prescribed at Southeast Pain & Spine Care: physical therapy, massage, cognitive behavior therapy, aquatic therapy, and chiropractic care. Medical therapies include joint and nerve block injections, epidural steroid injections, and nerve ablation. Joint injections are familiar to many and are used to identify the source of pain as well as treat an injury or condition. These are out-patient, non-surgical procedures.

ADVANCED, CUTTING-EDGE TREATMENTS “Neurostimulation is a therapeutic treatment that is like a pace maker for pain,” Dr. Gingerich told me. “Difficult to treat pain in areas such as the hand, chest, groin, lower legs, knees, and feet can be relieved with this advanced implant. Patients report that pain symptoms have disappeared, as well as accompanying redness and swelling, after treatment, even from excruciating pain.” Dr. Gingerich is one of only a handful of doctors in North Carolina using this cutting-edge technology, called dorsal root ganglion therapy. The DRG is an easily accessible structure in the spine that plays a key role in the development and management of chronic neuropathic pain. The small device is implanted in the body, blocking pain signals before they enter the spinal cord and make their way to the brain. “This allows us to treat pain and minimize opioids, and in some cases, eliminate pain altogether. It’s another tool in our arsenal,” said Gingerich.

Dr. Evans has been with the practice for ten years and lives in Hickory. His wife, Kim Evans, is a nurse practitioner in Hickory. They have four children, two in high school and two are college-age. Dr. Gingerich recently moved his practice from Southeast Pain & Spine Care in Huntersville to the Hickory location. He has two daughters, ages eight and ten. Dr. Evans and Dr. Gingerich are both members of the American Society of Anesthesiology, the International Association for the Study of Pain, North Carolina Medical Society, and the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians.

The HydraFacial was just added to Pure Reflection’s service lineup in February.

The treatment takes as little as 30 minutes and requires no downtime. By removing dead skin cells, the HydraFacial extracts impurities while simultaneously bathing the skin in cleansing, moisturizing serums. “The procedure is very hydrating,” Dr. Vickie Lovin said. “People 18

“This is a laser treatment for menopausal women who have severe vaginal

dryness,” Dr. Lovin said. “It’s been very successful and very effective, especially for women who can’t take hormone treatments.” The treatment helps eliminate dryness that causes irritation, painful intercourse, urinary urgency or incontinence from surgical or natural menopause. The simple and quick procedure uses a laser to deliver fractional carbon dioxide laser energy to the vaginal wall tissue. The treatment

works by stimulating collagen production, resulting in increased moisture and decreased pain and discomfort.

Dr. Lovin, a practicing gynecologist, performs the procedures. She recommends three treatments scheduled six weeks apart, and one yearly treatment to maintain results. “The treatments are practically painless, our patients have a very high rate of success with it,” Dr. Lovin said. “This is a life-changing service for many women.” Dr. Lovin offers a monthly seminar for people interested in the MonaLisa Touch procedure.

Other services include massages, facials, waxing services, skin care services, laser hair removal, makeup, makeovers, permanent makeup including micro blading of eyebrows, Botox, and Juvéderm. Special packages and gift cards are available.

They make a perfect Mother’s Day gift, and will bring Mom a full season of joy. Mixing flowers and greenery in one large pot creates a small garden of its own, however, filling a pot with a single annual and grouping the pots work just as well.

Flower beds are a little more work, and depending on their size, can be a lot of work, but they don’t have to be complicated. Large areas of the same blooms accented with greenery can be striking in their simplicity.

Prefer planting something edible? Herb gardens are useful and can be a landscape feature by edging with pretty pavers. The French call this kitchen garden a potager.

Whatever you decide to plant this season, I hope you enjoy digging in the dirt, the fresh air, and the fruits of your labor.

Quiche Lorraine with a Twist

pie shell teaspoons Worcestershire pound bacon ounces Mozzarella cheese eggs cup heavy cream tablespoons diced green chiles

Directions

Preheat oven to 375°. Brush pie shell with Worcestershire sauce and prick it well with a fork.

Bake pie crust until it just starts to get brown.

Fry bacon and crumble. Beat eggs and cream. Add drained green chiles and bacon to the egg mixture. Place Mozzarella cheese in the bottom of pie crust and pour egg mixture over top. Bake at 375° for 40-45 minutes.

Serve hot with a green salad and a fruit tray.

A common mantra passed down by generations of doctors, nutritional experts, and disapproving parents claims, “You are what you eat.” Often this can be a harsh reality check on our health, stamina, and even appearance.

We begin to evaluate what we are feeding ourselves and the positive or negative effects certain substances yield. Sometimes it is necessary to cut something out. Other times our body is deficient and starved of vitamins and nutrients. Much in the same manner, we must examine the condition of our inner psyche.

My friends—whether it’s when we’re traveling, indulging our creative sides, or simply pushing past our comfort zones—these are the foods we must consciously devour for endurance and longevity.

We can’t be passionate to the fullest about our goals and dreams until we are self-passionate in inner care. Let’s not ignore the present! Do the things you need to do in order to build a healthy spirit, body, and mind. After all, we are what we eat.
