Varicose Veins Slow You Down!
Do you suffer from leg swelling, itching, heaviness, leg pain or leg sores? Do you only wear garments that cover bulging and discolored veins?
Dr. Thompson with The Center for Advanced Vein Care can erase those blemished and bulging veins permanently! If left untreated, Varicose Veins can progress to a more serious venous disease.
BEFORE

Modern treatment of varicose veins includes endovenous thermal ablation. This technique involves placing a small catheter directly into the vein, followed by laser or radio frequency energy to the vein. In addition, injection therapy, ultrasound guided injection therapy, or ambulatory phlebectomy (removal of veins using micro hooks) may be required.
Procedures are performed in-office, with no downtime.
Treatments are covered by private insurance and Medicare. No Referrals Needed.

Welcome to the August issue. “August rain: the best of the summer gone, and the new fall not yet born. The odd uneven time.” – Sylvia Plath August is summer’s last stand. Temperatures, still sizzling hot at noon, will soon surrender to cooler Carolina evenings, as they must. Many of us carry memories of fine vacations into fall, when work once again becomes our main priority. In homage to August, and to working women everywhere, we’re sharing several stories about dedicated, successful local business women. It’s the perfect month, because August 26 is Women’s Equality Day, the day in 1920 when the woman’s suffrage movement won the right to vote. Today, more than 11 million women own businesses, generating almost $2 trillion in sales worldwide. In fact, studies show that businesses with women in top executive positions usually make more money than those with only male executives.* Women still face obstacles in the business world, such as cultural and gender bias, but those we spoke to have never let such negative issues stop them from enjoying tremendous success, and we congratulate each one of them. Also in August, many families are preparing to send children of all ages off to school, stocking up on everything from backpacks to new shoes to notebooks. But many of our youngest kids will enter a classroom for the very first time. It can be a 4

scary experience for all concerned. Working parents must choose whether to home school their little ones, place them in daycare, or enroll them in preschool. It can be a daunting decision, so this month we aim to alleviate some of that anxiety with our article about choosing a preschool. Speaking of stress, we’ve got more advice, mostly for adults, about how to manage it. Because no matter your circumstances, stress can damage body and spirit if you allow it to continue long term. Meanwhile, there are still a few warm, muggy weeks to enjoy in August. Hickory residents are invited to celebrate Norman Coley’s life at Normfest, a concert at Conover City Park on August 10. Catawba Farms offers four August concert dates with a variety of music styles. And there’s plenty of time left to appreciate the “boys of summer” by attending a Hickory Crawdads baseball home game. Summer may be beating its inevitable retreat, but at the end of August we can all look forward to fall festivals and falling leaves.
Until next month, thank you for reading the August issue of Hickory Living magazine.

“Award-winning” is a designation that all custom home builders strive for. Families looking for a company to build a beautiful new home seek out a team whose work has been acknowledged by reputable organizations. Look no further. Steele’s Construction’s innovative approach to home building has been awarded many times over—the company has been named Best of Houzz in Design and Service for the last four years and is recognized as an Influencer. The results of Tim Steele’s customized and personal approach to home building are clients 12

who are totally blown away when the home they have been dreaming of is completed and revealed—in a breathtaking fashion—to be everything they desire. “My business plan, when I started Steele’s Construction, was to create a top-quality home building and high-end renovation company that provides absolutely everything a homeowner needs—and then some—in a comprehensive package,” Tim Steele explained. “We’re unique in the industry. Our one-stop-process
brings to the table creative design, superior craftsmanship, high-end furnishings, and finishes led by a top-quality team of designers and craftsmen to execute the finished product.” That is literally how Tim begins: by having a personal prep meeting with the design team and clients, around a big table at Steele’s design center, to discover all the special details the homeowners want built into their new luxury home. Collaboration, from the very start, is key. From the initial design, both architecturally and in the interiors, Tim and his team work closely
with families through completion. They bring your concept to light, making note of your unique style and the features you want, even down to how you live your life, so that the home you move into is not only beautifully crafted with the best materials, but also that it works for you and your family’s lifestyle. “We make it easy for clients to realize and fine-tune what they’re after in a new home,” Tim continued. “It’s a seamless process that works.” THE DEVIL IS IN THE DETAILS “Amazing…Stunning...Phenomenal…Awesome…Beautiful… Incredible. There aren’t enough adjectives in the English language to adequately describe our new space and our feelings for Steele’s Construction and Steele’s Construction Design Team,” Bill and Cara Robinette shared. “They did for us what others before them couldn’t or wouldn’t do. Every question, suggestion, phone call, and text message was immediately responded to. Even an email sent at midnight! The devil is in the details, and the Steeles know it.” The Robinette’s comments are just one of many rave reviews that Steele’s Construction has received over the last six years: “Tim worked diligently to make sure we were back home a month before our scheduled time without missing one detail. The scheduling and construction side of the project was nothing short of perfection.” “HAPPY, HAPPY, HAPPY!” “Their design team was excellent, having a vision for our home that my wife and I hadn’t even been able to conceptualize. Altogether the company was a breeze to work with, and the results speak for themselves. We now have an amazing home that we are in love with.” “This is the second project Steele’s Construction has done for my family, and I have already begun to plan the next one.” These are just a sampling of customer comments.

THE ONE-STOP-SHOP CONCEPT Once the team has asked the homeowners questions about what they want in their home (questions like, What’s your lifestyle? What can’t you live without? Do you like to entertain? Are you formal or informal?) then they present design ideas. They discuss everything from the lighting and plumbing fixtures, the finishes, the flooring, window style, etc., even the furnishings so clients don’t have to run all over town looking at samples and swatches. “We make these decisions together, here around the table, so the whole concept comes together almost effortlessly,” Tim said. “Our unique planning process contributes to the efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and speed at which we can finish a home. I won’t take on a new project unless I know we can get it completed to suit the family in a timely fashion. And, when our design team has put the last detail in place, our clients rarely change a thing!” Indeed, with three warehouses at their disposal, the design HICKORY LIVING • AUGUST 2019

team can offer clients several choices of finishing options on the spot—Steele’s Construction planning process is easy, and it works. Recently, Steele’s Construction completed a stunning 7,000-square-foot modern farmhouse style home in just four months. “Even being there, I can’t believe how breathtaking it is,” the owner said. “They pulled everything together exactly how we wanted it. It’s a dream come true.” THE TEAM, THE FAMILY Tim Steele is a licensed general contractor and owner/CEO of the company. He developed a unique skill set from his experience in the US Navy, in manufacturing management and business development. Tiring of the travel required in the corporate world, he created Steele’s Construction to fulfill his lifelong passion for building. With expansion into Opulence by Steele, (voted 2015 Finest Home Interiors Store in Catawba County), the Steele’s most recent acquisition of The Haymarket, a partnership with almost 600 fabric, finishing, and home decor vendors in the US and Europe, and a new retail enterprise in 14

Hickory make building or remodeling a home in the style you desire easy, exciting, and very satisfying. “Our team is amazing,” Tim told me. “We work with extraordinary builders, craftsmen, and designers who know how to get it right. The sub-contractors we partner with are among the finest in our area. Your general contractor and project manager are at your site every single day, and when they are finished building or remodeling your home, it is ready to move right in. We all want our clients to be delighted with our design, our quality, and the fine details of our workmanship. It’s who we are.” Senior project manager Victor Popan started building things with his dad when he was a kid. He has over 20 years’ experience in the construction industry and has been with Steele’s Construction since the business started. Robert Farley manages the custom furniture division, and Stephanie Lowrance is the administrative manager. One recent client remarked, “Supervisors Victor and Calob are personal and professional, and work
well together. I have never even heard of a construction company that stays ahead of schedule, but these guys were consistently faster than I expected.” “We’re very proud to have family on our team; our kids came home from college to work with us. They each bring their own creative ideas to the company,” said Donna Steele. “Calob is a project manager with both a residential and commercial contractor license. Cierra is on the design team and manager of Steele’s Home Market, and Courtney does interior designs and drafting—she’s the one who presents 3-D software architectural renderings to clients. Chloe works as design assistant, and Michael works alongside the construction and design team as a real estate agent. THE FINEST WORKMANSHIP If you have any thought in your head about building your dream home or remodeling one that you love, Tim Steele is the man to talk to. Take a moment to explore steelesconstructionllc.com to light a fire in your imagination of what is possible. HOW TO CHOOSE A PRESCHOOL By JC Summerford You’ve made the big decision: you’re sending your child to preschool. How do you choose the best one? There are several things to consider. First, the school should be located near your home or work so that it’s convenient to reach in case any issues, like illness, arise during the day. Once you’ve checked the references and credentials of several preschools near your home, arrange to take a tour of each one with your child. While there, ask lots of questions. Do the children seem happy? When you walk in the door, do you feel welcome and comfortable? Take note of whether the children are laughing, having fun, and seem genuinely happy to be
there. Menaka Land, owner and director of Hickory Montessori, (pictured) says the emotional wellbeing of children at this age is just as important as academics. After all, about 90% of a child’s brain develops from birth to age five. “During that time, we have those children in our hands,” she says. “It’s a big responsibility. We make sure we treat children with kindness, respect, and love—the most important thing, as far as I’m concerned.” Are children treated as individuals? Kids learn at different rates and have distinct personalities. Some like to draw
and build things, while others prefer to solve math problems. It’s essential that all children are nurtured according to their abilities. Kerry PossingerKeiper, principal of Chesterbrook Academy in Mooresville (pictured), says, “Lesson plans are uniquely developed according to the child’s needs. One of the children in the classroom may be able to count to ten, but another may only count to five. We want to make sure we’re doing everything we can to individualize learning based upon the child’s needs.” HICKORY LIVING • AUGUST 2019

Always ask about the food and snacks that are served. If your child has a special diet, ask whether the school can accommodate it. Chesterbrook provides an app for parents so that they can check the school’s menu. “You can see exactly what the children are eating every day and how much of each item your child is eating. Sometimes they may not eat all the broccoli, so the teacher always notes it.” “We’re not only focused on academic and social skills, but we also need to know how students eat, as well,” Land adds. “We are concerned with the whole child, not just certain parts. Well-balanced meals are important.” Is the setting clean and safe? Ask about security procedures. You want to know how the front door traffic is handled, how the school will contact you in case of emergency, and how often are toys and furniture cleaned. Possinger-Keiper suggests asking, “How many times a day are your toys cleaned and sanitized? Do you have a three-step procedure to clean your toys?” She would also check about carpet, surfaces, and bathroom cleaning.

What are the teachers and curriculum like? You want your child to receive excellent academics, but you don’t want her to feel stressed or over-worked. Great teachers create a positive, fun environment and are sensitive to each child’s needs. Preschools are required by law to adhere to specific child-to-teacher ratios so that teachers are not overburdened and can give proper attention to all students. “I would observe the classroom and watch the interactions with children,” Land advises. “Ask whether the teachers have a degree, if they are certified, and how long they have been teaching.” Is there a healthy emphasis on playtime and socialization? When kids are running around and playing, they’re also exercising their minds. Structured play is good, but make sure plenty of time is allowed for children to be children and use their imaginations. Land emphasizes teaching children how to get along with each other during playtime. “They don’t 24

HOW PRESCHOOLS ARE ACCREDITED The North Carolina Division of Child Development issues licenses based on a star-rating given to all eligible child care facilities. They are evaluated on program standards, staff education, and compliance history. You can check ratings at ncchildcare.ncdhhs.gov/ Services/Licensing/Star-RatedLicense/star-rated-license.

get that opportunity at home, one on one with a parent,” she says. “They need to learn patience in a group setting. We show them how to respect others and share in a positive manner. If children aren’t taught these things, when they get to kindergarten, they’re going to have difficulties.” Land believes a balance between work and play is essential. “When they’re learning, they focus on learning, but when they play, they just play. Work and play are separated.”
They learn a lot just by playing with each other.”
Possinger-Keiper agrees. “That’s one of our mottos, the balance between learning and play. Throughout the day, we want to make sure they have lots of free time.
For more information about finding and choosing a quality preschool near you, check out https://ncchildcare.ncdhhs.gov.
Bottom line: your child should leave preschool ready for kindergarten—if not ahead of the game—in terms of academics and social skills. After enrollment, monitor your child’s progress for a few days. If you see any indication that the school doesn’t meet your standards, you have the right to remove your child, no questions asked.
About 10% of preschools receive quality of care accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). The nonprofit organization imposes stringent guidelines for facility design, staff qualifications, health and safety, and physical environment. See more at www.naeyc.org.
HOW MUCH DOES PRESCHOOL COST? Average preschool costs range from $372 to $1,100 per month according to the National Association of Child Care Resource and Referral Agencies. A preschool does not have to be lavish or expensive to be good. In fact, there are free and low-cost preschools throughout the region. Eligible families can get some costs covered by the state of North Carolina if the preschool participates in the Subsidized Child Care Program. Head Start is a free federal preschool available to low-income families with children ages three to five. You can find a listing for free or lower cost preschools at freepreschools.org.

EIGHT WAYS TO MANAGE STRESS By JC Summerford
Everyone faces stressful situations: pulling an all-nighter to meet a work deadline, worrying over the monthly budget, dealing with relationship and family issues, driving home through rush hour traffic. Occasional stress can motivate us to make positive life changes, but if it remains at high levels, stress can lead to psychological and physical ailments. Short-term stress symptoms include headache, nausea, fatigue, moodiness, and panic attacks. Heavy, long-term stress, however, can create more serious conditions: heart disease, clinical depression, diabetes, obesity, immune system disorders, and gastrointestinal illness. While we can’t eliminate stress from our lives, it’s smart to have a game plan to manage it. Try to incorporate some of these stress-busting habits into your daily life. Your mind and body will thank you!
01 EXERCISE Regular physical exercise is hands-down the best way to deal with stress. Start with daily walks or bike rides, and over time, 26

challenge yourself with more vigorous workouts at least three to four times a week. If you dislike the gym, try swimming, tennis, golf, or any sport you enjoy. Some exercises are custom-made for stress reduction, such as yoga, tai chi, Pilates, and martial arts.
02 RELAX Stress tenses your muscles, often more than you realize. Be sure to start your day with a gentle stretching routine. Taking a warm bath can work wonders after a long day, especially a soak with aromatic bubbles. Why not light a candle or two and listen to peaceful music? Massage is another proven way to work out the kinks. It’s critical to get a full night’s sleep—most adults need seven or eight hours.
03 BREATHE DEEPLY You don’t have to become a Buddhist monk to reap the benefits of deep breathing. Anytime you feel stress, just stop. Go to a quiet place—the bedroom, a balcony, even your car. Sit with your hands in your lap or by your side. Close your eyes,

breathe slowly and deeply in and out. Count each breath until you get to ten. Repeat until you feel calm, usually after five to ten minutes. Some folks find it helpful to visualize that they are in a relaxing place, such as a forest or beach. Others mentally repeat positive thoughts or prayers. Even if you just take a few deep, cleansing breaths at your desk, it should help.
04 EAT WELL Stress eating is distracted eating. In other words you just eat because it makes you feel better. This often results in overeating comfort foods and junk. Then, a feedback loop forms, and the bad foods exacerbate your stress so you eat even more. Make a commitment to stick to a healthier diet, including lots of veggies, whole grains, fruits and lean proteins, and try not to succumb too often to fatty, sugary, salty treats. If you feel stress is causing gastro problems, a doctor or certified dietician can help design a personalized food plan.
05 CHILL OUT Simplify your life as best you can. Start with a few small things, such as leaving the house early so you aren’t in a rush to get to work. Drive in the slow lane, listen to soothing music. Here’s a big one: Learn to say “NO”. Recognize that you cannot oblige every request from your boss, loved ones, and friends. Set aside time each day for peaceful activities, such as gardening, painting, knitting, reading, or baking an amazing cake.
06 TALK ABOUT IT Believe it or not, just talking about what’s bothering you can lower your stress level. Many of us hold secret pain inside, and 28
HICKORY LIVING • AUGUST 2019
over time, this can result in stress-related illness. Talk to trusted friends, family, a minister, or doctor. You can even do some positive self-talk—no, it doesn’t mean you’re crazy! If you find yourself being self-critical, switch the message to something like: “I can do this!” “I’m grateful to be alive today!” or “This moment doesn’t define me!” Talking things out helps put everything into perspective and helps a negative situation be less troubling.
07 BREAK IT UP Life’s not perfect, and no individual is perfect. You can only control your own thoughts and actions, so just do what you can and laugh at everything else. Yes, a healthy sense of humor is another trick to help you through stressful times. Try making a list of possible solutions for a stubborn problem. If you encounter an insurmountable block, try breaking it into small tasks that you can focus on one at a time. Write these manageable to-dos on a calendar so you can see that the end is indeed in sight.
08 PULL THE TRIGGERS What’s causing the most stress in your life? Is it financial responsibilities, a fight with your spouse, a difficult boss? Once you identify these stress triggers, you can work to disarm them. Some people find that keeping a stress journal helps you identify triggers. You might have an a-ha! moment where you realize, “oh, that’s what has been bugging me.” At that point, you can take positive action to change those patterns which lead you to stress.

Thrivent Financial has provided financial services to Christians for more than 100 years. They help people navigate financial goals, choices, and change. They craft plans that factor your needs, goals, and faith with solutions to suit your unique situation. We spoke to consultant Kelly M. Jones, BFA, CLTC, FIC, about how Thrivent differs from others operating in the same arena. What services does Thrivent offer? We want to help you make wise financial choices on your journey. We offer financial planning, advice, investments, retirement accounts, insurance, annuities, and more. We specialize in Estate Strategies, Investment Strategies, Financial Advice, Charitable Giving, and Tax Efficiency. What awards or industry recognition have you or your firm received? Last year I achieved Diamond Group with my company, an elite group of the top twenty financial professionals across the country. I’m one of just three women to achieve this. I was also recognized by our InFaith Foundation as a VIP (Voice in Philanthropy). Thrivent is a Fortune 500 Company. We received Etisphere’s World’s Most Ethical Company eight years straight. six international builds with Habitat for Humanity. We support National Kidney Foundation, Hearts and Hope Foundation, and Safe Harbor Rescue Mission. Our Thrivent community events provide support for needs such as schools, churches, police, athletics, and so on. What are the latest trends in your field? One of the biggest is the transfer of wealth. Women now hold 51% of the world’s wealth. We are encouraging women to take a more active role in their finances. Another trend is qualified charitable distributions (QCD). Individuals over 70 ½ are subject to required minimum distributions from their IRAs and can direct these dollars directly to charitable institutions. What sets you apart from other financial services companies? My team, the Greater Carolinas Group, and how we work with individuals and other financial professionals. With over 100 years of experience we are dedicated to changing the member experience and mentoring other financial professionals into greatness. We want to create a place where people feel they have “life advisors.” They can trust us to give them sound advice for life’s hardest times. What are your goals for the future? We want to break down the fears people have around financial planning. We also want to help others make a difference in people’s lives, impacting this community on a broader scale. Thrivent’s motto is “Be Wise with Money” to help people “Live Generously.” My personal motto is, “If you get to the top alone, it’s because you forgot to bring others with you.”

Grace McLaurin is a physician assistant, owner, and partner in Vitality Anti-Aging Center, Vitality Surgical Center, V-Infusion Hydration Center, and owner of Aesthetic Consulting & Training (ACT) in Hickory. The group offers integrative health and non-surgical aesthetics, such as Botox, dermal fillers, Coolsculpting, Cellfina, PRP, plastic surgery, as well as weight management, nutrition, skincare, and more. How did you decide on this career track? I’ve wanted to be in medicine since I was a young child. I pursued a different path earlier in life, getting married and having my children. When I moved to Hickory, I realized I was close enough to Wake Forest to go after my dream, and the PA profession seemed to be the perfect fit. We started in the spring of 2006 with five people, and we’ve seen growth every year since opening. We have an amazing staff who always put patient care, safety, and results as number one. We were blessed four years ago to have the opportunity to move into Moretz Mills and have continued to grow. What achievements have you enjoyed? Over the past year, Vitality has added some amazing new treatments such as Cellfina, Inmode’s Accutite, Facetite, Bodytite, and Morpheus 8. In addition, we have just purchased CoolTone which will be a game changer in body contouring.

Vitality offers non-surgical options that can help people achieve the body they have always dreamed of. Vitamin Infusion and preventative health are certainly of special interest. In the aesthetics realm, lips and jawlines are huge for both men and women. What are your goals for the future? We are looking at expansion and hope to have another location in 2020.

Michele Willis has never used her psychology degree–at least not directly. But it helps her in important ways, because working with people and understanding their wants and needs is a big part of her business. How did you become involved with the clothing business? After selling online for a few years, in 2006 I decided to open my first brick-and-mortar business, Style Exchange. We quickly grew into offering chic boutique items, and I realized that I had a real passion for picking out the latest trend-setting pieces. In 2011, I opened my first Aqua B store in Hickory. It was a dream–my passion come to life! I’ve since opened three additional locations in Mooresville, Blowing Rock and Morganton. What kinds of fashions can people buy at Aqua B? We carry the latest trends for women of all ages and sizes, and some locations offer girls’ fashions. Our goal every day is to make women feel beautiful! How would you describe your success over the years? We have had incredible success at all of our locations, and our Website, shopaquab.com, is extremely popular. We’ve shipped to more than thirty states so far! But I would say that our biggest successes are our repeat customers. We have people who have shopped with us since the beginning, at all four locations. How do you give back to your communities? We donate to more than fifteen nonprofits per month in the form of merchandise and/or gift cards. We are thrilled to be part of such wonderful communities.

Tell us about the latest fashion trends for 2019. We pride ourselves in identifying the latest, greatest trends and making them available in our stores before anyone else. Right now, our bestselling item is the kimono. They are so versatile for any age or body type–they’re a must-have in your closet year-round. We carry them in solids, florals, animal prints, and other patterns. Espadrille platform sandals are flying off our shelves too. Most customers end up leaving with more than one pair! Big, bold, beautiful earrings are statement pieces that everyone’s looking for right now. Fringed, beaded, acrylic, animal print, tassel: if they’re eye catching, we have them.

How do you see your future shaping up? I’m incredibly grateful and feel blessed for the success we’ve had over the past eight years, and I can’t wait to see what we can accomplish in the future. Who knows, you may see a fifth Aqua B location pop up in the next year!

First, tell us a little bit about yourself. I have two small children, Cecilia and Ethan, and a wonderful husband who is also an internist. We have three dogs, a horse, three bunnies, and two guinea pigs. Give us an overview of your education and training. I attended Notre Dame for my undergraduate work, where I studied philosophy and biology. Then, I went to Michigan State University for medical and grad school. I am an osteopathic physician with an MS in epidemiology. I have worked as a hospitalist, outpatient internist and have trained resident physicians my entire career. I also have specific training in obesity medicine. Tell us a bit more about A Woman’s View. We are a medical practice that offers most all services a woman will need throughout all stages of life. We offer obstetrics, gynecological and primary care. Mammography is done on site, along with bone density scanning, some lab testing, ultrasound services, and selected in-house surgeries. How and why did A Woman’s View get started? Dr. Vickie Lovin opened the practice in 1996 with the purpose of providing not just gynecological care but care that extends to the mental, spiritual, and emotional needs of all women. One way she set out to do this was by offering ‘care for women by women.’ Since that time, we’ve grown to a staff of 67, including 16 healthcare providers.
Dr. Rachel Kelly, DO Provider at A Woman’s View
What kinds of industry recognition has A Woman’s View received? In 2019, we were chosen as the best women’s healthcare practice in the area, earning the Gold Daisy Award. Personally, I became a fellow of the American College of Physicians in the past year. What are the latest trends in women’s health care? I have a great interest in interventions that help with long term weight loss. The field is exploding right now with new information to help make that a reality for many patients.
Dr. Rachel Kelly, DO, Internal Medicine physician, is the newest primary care physician to join the team at A Woman’s View healthcare clinic. A Woman’s View offers comprehensive medical care specifically tailored to the needs of women. We wanted to know more about Dr. Kelly’s philosophy and approach to her work.
What is your personal philosophy as related to your work? I think my empathy, and true fascination with how the body and mind operate as a unit, set me apart from other clinicians. I have a broad range of interests and experiences, in medicine and my personal life, that enable me to relate to people well and give me perspective. I prefer shared decision-making and always arm my patients with enough information to make a good decision about their own healthcare. Above all, I want to help women live their best lives by helping them learn how to treat themselves as well as they treat everyone around them. If I had a personal motto, it would be: “Be yourself, everyone else is taken.” HICKORY LIVING • AUGUST 2019

Sharon Killian Radke and Susan Killian Kirby grew up in the family business on Springs Road, as third generation Killians. Both are committed to carrying on the esteemed tradition of Killians, a Hickory institution. Their grandfather Emory opened the original Killians as a feed mill in 1953, and their father, Elmer, added a hardware business about a decade later. Back then, it sold everything from tools to toys.
ways looking to give our hardware department a facelift.
What is today’s Killians like? We sell outdoor power equipment and parts from all major manufacturers and engine brands, and we also service them. We offer fully stocked departments for hardware, plumbing, and electrical needs. We also have lawn and garden seed, fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, and insecticides.
How does Killians benefit the Hickory community? Every year, we offer 8 to 10 commercial grade zero-turn mowers to nonprofit organizations, local churches, and high schools.
How has Killians changed over the years? We’ve expanded the business a lot. In 1964, we added hardware and power equipment, and in 1983, we doubled our size, adding a showroom and warehouse. Over time, we’ve survived mass merchant stores with competitive brands. The key has been customer service. We know our people and community on a personal level, and our staff is very knowledgeable in helping you find the perfect product for your needs. John Valencia was a great hire for us. Have you received any industry recognition? We won the Master Service Dealer from The Toro Company, a major manufacturer of lawn equipment, and we’re a Toro President’s Elite Club member. Killians is also a Stihl Gold Service Dealer.
What are the latest trends in lawn equipment? Battery powered products are becoming increasingly more popular for homeowners with smaller yards. They’re a great value, easy to use, and don’t require maintenance or service. It’s important to buy any equipment from a dealer who teaches you how to operate and maintain them properly. What are your goals for the future? Killians will always provide the best products and service at competitive prices. We are committed to helping a new generation of customers looking to buy outdoor power equipment for the first time. It’s a long-term investment, but we’ll be here to help support them.
