LIVING Living the Good Life

Welcome to the November issue. I hope you voted on Election Day. Voting is one of the real privileges that we have as Americans. It is also an important process to help bring about change and set the direction of Catawba County, and our country as well. Make your vote count and have your voice heard. Let us remember our veterans on their special day. Sandwiched between Election Day and Thanksgiving Day, Veteran’s Day is celebrated on November 11th. We should always remember and honor our veterans for their service and sacrifice. The freedoms that we enjoy today are a direct result of the dedication of our men and women who have served in the armed forces. As the Sun sets on 2010, Thanksgiving is the perfect time to reflect back on this year. As you look back, I hope you find much to be thankful for. Most of us don’t have to look too hard or long to realize that we are indeed fortunate. We are blessed to live and work in such a wonderful county and to have great friends and neighbors.

“Never Too Old For Braces” Without a doubt, the very best thing that I did for myself was having Dr. Garlitz and his staff evaluate my teeth and fit my braces! I was always self-conscious about my smile and I did the usual thing of covering my mouth when I talked and adjusted my smile to cover my teeth.

Beautiful Smiles... Exceptional Care

Like most young parents, I wanted my daughter, Marcie, to have a pretty smile but continued to accept mine. One day I looked in the mirror and in addition to protruding, I had one front tooth that had overlapped the other and my lower teeth were going up into a peak in the front! Talk about adding insult to injury... to say the least, I adjusted well to my braces. I cried with happiness at the end of my treatment when I saw my straight teeth and they felt so good. At the young age of 71, I finally love to smile! I doubt that Dr. Garlitz and his staff really realize how much their corrective work has meant to me. Thank you Dr. Garlitz and staff from the bottom of my heart.

Delighting Customers By Kathy Wheeler

When you enter Deborah’s Gracious Gifts, you are greeted with a friendly and warm welcome. Even though it may be your first visit, you get the feeling you have known Deborah Miller, owner of Deborah’s Gracious Gifts, all of your life. I have no doubt that before you finish shopping, you will not only have found the perfect gift, but you will have made a new friend that you will visit time and time again.

“Since I was a little girl, I have always wanted to own my own boutique,” says Deborah. Five years ago, Ms. Miller (or Deborah as she insists you call her) decided to pursue her dream and opened her first shop, Crabtree & Evelyn. She offered two popular product lines, Crabtree & Evelyn and Vera Bradley, which she still offers today. The vision, however, had always been to expand into a gift shop with a wide variety of unique gifts; items you couldn’t find in department stores. In October 2009, Deborah fulfilled her childhood dream. She changed the name of the shop from Crabtree & Evelyn to Deborah’s Gracious Gifts and broadened her inventory with baby and children’s items, home and seasonal décor, jewelry, accessories and more. Her original vision proved to be a popular one. Just last month she moved from her Catawba Valley Boulevard location to a larger Viewmont storefront located at 2440 North Center Street in

the North Pointe Shopping Center. In just one short year, Deborah’s Gracious Gifts has become a one-stop-giftshop for both locals and out-of-town customers. This larger location has room for a relaxing lounge area with a loveseat and a few good magazines. “It is often used by husbands who are brave enough to go shopping with their wives,” says Deborah. “However, we do have gentlemen that shop with us. We offer a line of excellent razors, soaps and skin care products for men, as well as gourmet items for chefs who love to cook at home. Many gentlemen stop by to purchase gifts for their wives, daughters and mothers. Some bring their sons in to purchase a birthday present or Mother’s Day gift. Gift certificates, custom gift baskets and Vera Bradley handbags or weekend totes are popular gifts,” says Deborah. The first time I visited Deborah’s, I was taken with its charm and beauty. Deborah helped me pick out a few gifts

I needed, sharing her thoughts and suggestions on the most popular choices. For my young nephew we found a plush buddy-blanket called Skipit, the Dog, with its matching washable book that he will love! For one of my sisters, we picked out a colorful Vera Bradley handbag and for the other a Crabtree & Evelyn gift set. My mom always hosts our Christmas dinner, so I selected a gorgeous white serving tray with silver Christmas tree handles, paired with holiday guest towels. The men on my list will enjoy a shaving brush with Crabtree & Evelyn shaving cream, a manicure set paired with Gardener’s hand cream, and a fine leather shoeshine kit. Finding gifts for my nieces was a breeze. With Deborah’s help, I chose a very trendy necklace with a matching bracelet, and a leopard-print bath wrap and a scoop of ME!Bath Ice Cream. This shop owner really knows her products. She’s ready to serve as your own personal shopper just by askHICKORY LIVING • NOVEMBER 2010

ing for her professional assistance. Shopping is not the only thing that goes on at Deborah’s Gracious Gifts. Deborah designed her new 2400 square foot gift shop so everyone would feel welcome. From the lounge, where you can enjoy a cup of coffee and magazines to the kid’s zone that keeps little ones happy with baskets of puzzles and crayons, comfortable floor pillows and Disney movies playing on a flat screen, visitors are graciously treated like family. Moms always enjoy shopping more when their children can entertain themselves. These hospitality areas were developed to further Deborah’s mission statement. “Delighting our customers takes precedence over everything. I don’t want people to just come in and buy something. I want to create a shopping experience,” beams Deborah. “When I’m choosing merchandise for the store, I always look for quality brands and unique items…things our customers fall in love with. We keep adding new items and changing out products so our regulars are excited each time they visit. We also offer lay-away—you don’t have to choose between your favorite items, you can get them all.” Shane Greene Photography © 2010

Deborah is the recipient of the Catawba

County Chamber of Commerce 2010 Faith in the Future Award. Her faith not only lies in the future, but she feels that God has truly blessed her to moved forward with her dreams, a sure sign she is in the right business. From the time you walk through her door you will be delighted with the shop, its variety of merchandise, the welcoming atmosphere, friendly conversation and her exceptional customer service. Deborah’s staff is just as friendly and helpful. Emaly Cline was hired shortly after Deborah opened her first shop five years ago and still assists customers on weekends. Margaret Varn has been with Deborah’s for four years and is an invaluable employee. Cindy King and Tera Crisp were recently added to the staff. “I am blessed to have such a wonderful staff,” says Deborah. “We all stop what we are doing when a customer comes in to give them 100% of our attention. If you are on your lunch hour or in a hurry, we help, we don’t hover. If you need us to suggest something or answer your questions, we are there. We offer complimentary gift wrapping to make it easy to finish your gift buying in one stop.” Deborah’s Gracious Gifts doesn’t always

In the spirit of giving gifts, Deborah features promotions to support local non-profits. “It’s one way we give back to the community,” says Deborah. “We have raised funds for Hospice, Catawba County Humane Society, Through Healing Eyes, and we’ve stocked a few local food pantries, too. In October, for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, 20% of the proceeds from the sale of all pink items were donated to breast cancer charities.”

Men’s shopping nights help husbands, sons, fathers and brothers prepare for anniversaries, birthdays and holidays. One favorite event is the Vera Bradley Launch Party. This shopping spree announces the release of new Vera Bradley products at Deborah’s.

Inside The Chamber We’re “Selling the Invisible” Everyday

Helpful Advice For The Service Industry

• The first step in service marketing is your service • First, before you write an ad, rent a list, dash off a press release…fix your service • Assume your service is bad. It can’t hurt, and it will force you to improve • Ask: who is setting your standards, your industry, your ego, or your clients? • Big mistakes are big opportunities • Don’t just think better; think different • Always start at zero • Create the possible service; don’t just create what the market needs or wants. Create what it would love • Never ask “What don’t you like?” • You’re selling individuals. Talk to individuals • Marketing is not a department. It is your business • Get out, climb out, have someone pull you out of the tunnel • Every act is a marketing act. Make every employee a marketing person • In planning your marketing, don’t just think of your business. Think of your skills • If you’re selling a service, you’re selling a relationship • Before you try to satisfy “the client”, understand and satisfy the person • Go where others aren’t • Make technology a key part of every marketing plan • Study each point of contact. Then improve each one-significantly • Be professional, but more importantly, be personable 20 20

• You never know. So don’t assume that you should. Plan for several possible futures • Do it now. The business obituary pages are filled with planners who waited • Act like a shark. Keep moving • Think dumb • Mistrust “facts”. And don’t approach planning as a precise science. Planning is an imprecise act • Beware of focus groups; they focus only on today. And planning is about tomorrow • Don’t let perfect ruin good • Start failing so you can start succeeding • Common sense will only get you so far. For inspiring results, you’ll need inspiration • Appeal only to a prospect’s reason, and you may have no appeal at all • Familiarity breeds business. Spread your word however you can • Identify and polish your anchors • Each impression you make will, temporarily at least, be your last. So make it strong • Stand for one distinctive thing that will give you a competitive advantage • To broaden your appeal, narrow your position • In your service, what’s the hardest task? Position yourself as the expert at this task • Say one positive thing and you will become associated with many • Don’t start by positioning your service. Instead, leverage the position

you have • Your position is all in people’s mind. Find out what that position is • If the gap between your position and your positioning statement is too big, your customers won’t make the leap. Keep your steps small • In positioning, don’t try and hide your small size. Make it work by stressing its advantages, such as responsiveness and individual attention • No matter how skilled you are, you must focus your skills • Don’t assume that logical pricing is smart pricing. Maybe your price, which makes you look like a good value, actually makes you look second rate • Be distinctive and sound it • Make the service visible and make the prospect comfortable • Your first competitor is indifference • Saying many things usually communicates nothing • Give me one good reason why

• After you say one thing, repeat it again and again • Don’t use adjectives. Use stories • Attack your first weakness; the stereotype the prospect had about you • Create the evidence of your service quality. Then communicate it • lf you think your promotional idea might seem silly or unprofessional, it is • Prospects do not buy how good you are at what you do. They buy how good you are at “who you are” • Far better to say too little than too much • Make sure people see who you are • Watch and perfect the visuals you send • Repeat yourself visually, too. It makes you look more organized and professional, and easier to remember • Give your marketing a human face • You don’t listen to clichés. Your clients won’t either • Get to the point or you will never get to the close • In your words and pictures, make yourself vivid • You cannot bore someone into buying your service • If you want publicity, advertise Special advice and commentary from the book: “Selling the Invisible” by Harry Beckwith
