As you will be aware, every year we publish a book featuring the designers globally who are truly ‘at the top of their game’ right now. This isn’t the same names each year, it is not a closed club of stuffy designers re-hashed each year, it isn’t an endless list. It is quite simply a selection of names from throughout the world. Their work, outlook and design styles are diverse. Some are well established over 20, 30 or even 40 years in the industry, others have recently emerged and are creating incredible new schemes for a design elite and savvy global customer base. I very much hope that their words and wisdom will offer a vision of hope and enlightenment as we move into this next New Year and new chapter in this evolutionary process that emerges in this sector. Certainly, everyone involved in this issue is excited to bring forward their vision for the future and to share it; we face 2022 together, stronger, bolder, wiser and as a global design community determined to change the planet aesthetically and architecturally together.

Where were you born/ where did you grow up? I was born in the North East of England but moved to the Midlands when I was very young. I am very proud of my Midland roots, though I did spend a lot of my younger years living in various European countries for parts of the year due to my father’s work. Please explain your relevant training/ work experience? I have several years’ experience within Human Resource management and during that time I renovated many properties for fun, it was during that period my love affair for all things build and design began and in 2006 I enrolled at the prestigious KLC School of Design (London) on an intensive one-year course. Winning Student of the Year, amongst other awards, set me up well in the industry. Upon graduating I cut my teeth in an Interiors company in London and gained a wealth of experience there which enabled me to start my own company one year later in 2007. With over 100 projects under my belt, you learn every single day, so my learning continues. Please describe the highlight of your career to date. Without a doubt in 2018 winning our first design et al International Design & Architecture Award. How did achieving this make you feel? When you live and breathe design and have the privilege of being invited into people’s homes you carry a lot of stress and strain right from the offset, after all you have been entrusted not least to create something beautiful but to ensure your clients money is well invested and that all trades get the project across the finishing line in a timely manner, so to be acknowledged not least within the industry but internationally for excellence is an incredible feeling and makes all those less glamorous moments worthwhile. Where do you find inspiration for your work? I find inspiration in the everyday I really do; it could be on a country walk with my beloved dog Harry and seeing the texture on the bark of a tree or walking the back streets in Europe. I notice every detail everywhere always. What projects are you currently working on? We are very blessed to be working on 11 projects ranging from beautiful Grade II listed Georgian Townhouses, London Victorian Villas, an Old Vicarage and a stunning Barn in Norfolk soon, to name but a few, we really have a diverse clientele who invest in properties and, as their property portfolio grows, they take us with them. Tell us a little more about these projects... The biggest challenge we find on many of our projects is overcoming the various consents we have to obtain from planning, conservation and changing goal posts from one region to the next; you have to hold firm and steady and surround yourself with the right third-party skill set. Also, when you deal with as many old buildings as we do, you just never know what you will uncover, that presents itself with daily challenges, but you learn to keep an open mind and think on your feet. What areas of the design sector do you work in for the most part? As a busy studio we focus on high end residential projects, they generally are 6 plus bedroom homes. We would like to

14 The World’s Leading Design Names

explore getting into more boutique hotel design as there is a crossover between the two skill sets and we are putting the groundwork in to opening our first studio in the Balearic islands which the team is very excited about. Please describe the project you are most proud of to date, with reasons why this was a success? That’s a hard question, we have a few for different reasons, but if I had to select one project it would be a four-storey large Grade II listed Georgian Townhouse which we fully restored and renovated, we had minimal contact with the international clients and experienced lots of challenges with the local authority but in particular the conservation team. Thankfully working with a great contractor and playing the long game we got across the finishing line with very happy clients who we have gone on to work for 3 further times. How would you describe your work/design style /ethos? Quite simply there are no shortcuts to anything worth designing, care about everything, every detail and everyone on the project. How do you predict the pandemic will change the global design sector? In so far as looking for more home-grown products, reducing the impact on the carbon footprint and supply chain shortages, but as an industry we have been pushing this way before the pandemic took hold. What are your thoughts on the future of design? The future of design is changing, design will always be exciting as it evolves daily, as we understand how personal wellbeing affects us daily and how in turn that is factored into how and what we design. In addition, tapping into offering clients a virtual experience will truly make design global no matter where you are in the world without having to meet face to face, changes are definitely coming. Please tell us your aims for the next twelve months and beyond? To focus on better understanding the technical world and how this will impact the day to day and our thought process and guiding clients to be open minded to that. Ensuring excellence in all we do continues and that we balance the divide between luxury living and it’s divide from the everyday, that we continue to be our own studio and not follow fads/ trends, something we have always been proud of, all at the same time as getting our new Balearic studio infrastructure established, we have a busy 12 months ahead and beyond. How is your work evolving? Our work evolves by the excellence we achieve on our projects and the great relationships we hold with our clients. We are very lucky to have repeat work through our clients and referrals with relationships stemming back 14 years. We professionally evolve by maintaining an open mind set and designing fresh each time. We study and learn from our changing environment around us and bring that into our design process, to organically grow allows us to manage that change with the ever-increasing workload and client waiting list.

The World’s Leading Design Names 17

Please explain your relevant training/ work experience? My brother and I founded 1.61 London together. The business was set up to find and create uniquely designed properties throughout the prime areas of London and the wider world. And unlike most interior designers the main experience my brother and I had was on the valuation side of the property business. This is a key component of any design 1.61 London undertakes, always ensuring that the work done is a good investment alongside delivering a beautiful home. Please describe the highlight of your career to date. 1.61 London winning its first design award. It came as a real surprise and only in year three. How did achieving this make you feel? An extremely proud moment for the whole team. Where do you find inspiration for your work? Inspiration comes from so many different sources. When working with a client they are the main source of inspiration for the project but on our developments, it can be a key component of the location or a unique product we can implement in a development. What project(s) are you currently working on? We are working on a range of incredible projects around the world from a 75,000 square foot mansion for a private client in the UK to a 35,000 square foot estate in Bel Air, Los Angeles. We are also currently working on a Gatsby esque family mansion in Surrey, a 350-foot yacht that is going into production in 2022, a stunning listed house in Belgravia and a 200 unit new build as part of the redevelopment of the Southwark Fire station to name a few. Tell us a little more about these projects... The level of detail and uniqueness we are creating for the 75,000 square foot mansion will be a true one-of-a-kind project. We are incorporating the very best ideas and materials from around the world to create a fully bespoke aesthetic. We aren’t able to share many of the details, but the project really will be one of the finest private residences in the world.

What area(s) of the design sector do you work in for the most part? Most of our projects are residential although we have recently completed a 30,000 square foot co-working space in Malaysia and we are currently designing a private plane. Please describe the project you are most proud of to date, with reasons why this was a success? Brigade Court – a 200 new build development - taking the oldest fire station in London and creating a combination of modern/ traditional design over the last two years has been an incredible journey for the team. We cannot wait for the completion to happen next year. How would you describe your work/design style /ethos? 1.61 London delivers a seamless integration of the very latest in finishes, furniture, implementation and technology. We undertake such a variety of finishes and looks that there isn’t one style we prefer. How has the pandemic changed your outlook on work/ life? It’s created a significant shift in the line between work and home life. We have learnt to improvise and have become far more adaptive as a team to the changing world. How do you predict the pandemic will change the global design sector? Working in the construction sector requires a lot more planning given the supply difficulties for materials. Faceto-face meetings have also evolved now with the majority of clients now happy to do zoom calls. This is something we think will remain in the future. What are your thoughts on the future of design? We think it’s becoming more and more important that the materials we use are sustainable. This is something we continue to strive for at 1.61 London. Please tell us your aims for the next twelve months and beyond? To deliver a complete one-stop solution in the property industry for our clients across all areas. Final thoughts We are very proud to be included in such a prestigious group of designers.

Where were you born/ where did you grow up? I was born in New Zealand and grew up mainly in Asia.

detail, tremendous courage and perhaps most important, perseverance.

Please explain your relevant training/ work experience? I started out at Architectural School and then went on to study Interior & Furniture Design.

How would you describe your work/design style /ethos? With my background in architectural design, I am always driven by what the space itself is “asking for”. I like to design homes where unique and interesting architectural details are exulted and respected. I usually start my process by looking for these standout features and try to highlight these as best I can while listening carefully to the client’s desires and lifestyle needs. My designs are always beautiful, but they must be functional too.

Please describe the highlight of your career to date. I have a few projects that come to mind: Designing The Peninsula Hong Kong was life changing as when we won the project I left London and opened the Asia Design Office for Richmond International where I was working at the time. Also setting up Alison Henry Design in Hong Kong was another great experience and working with International Chef Jean-George on making his vision come true for his restaurant Vong at the top of the Mandarin Oriental. How did achieving this make you feel? Every project comes with its own lessons, and the more learning I do the stronger and more confident I feel as a designer. Your past and current projects? I began my career in hospitality design but that has evolved and changed over the years. I am now mostly focused on residential design whether that is a permanent residence or a holiday home. I also work as an ambassador and creative advisor with brands like kitchen artisans Officine Gullo on expanding their reach within the interior design community. What project(s) are you currently working on? Currently we are working on a few residential projects both in and outside London — all very different styles of architecture and design, which keeps my work interesting. Please describe the project you are most proud of to date, with reasons why this was a success? My home in Belgravia which I have only recently completed has been the greatest pleasure to design. The beating heart of the property is the courtyard garden and I have built the entire house around it. With this verdant oasis at the centre, the entire space feels light, airy and joyful. Your thoughts on design: Great design requires a great imagination, an eye for

22 The World’s Leading Design Names

How has the pandemic changed your outlook on work/ life? Anyone who knows me well, knows I like to keep busy, so the pandemic was a great opportunity, not so much to slow down, but to really focus in on my projects. It was a great time for honing the smallest details and researching new artisans and makers whose work I love to incorporate. Which direction are you moving in from a design perspective? My design ethos has always been led by the architecture of a space and I find myself more and more trying to live by the old adage “Less is more”. Highlighting beautiful architectural details in a home is mostly an exercise in letting them sing. How is your work evolving? Discovering new artists, artisans and craftspeople to work with is a great way to keep work fresh and exciting. Finding ways to collaborate is a fantastically fulfilling creative pursuit. Final thoughts... As an Architectural & Interior Designer and with a background in large commercial projects, I have always been unafraid of working at scale. Allowing the beauty of an architectural feature to shine is always a great starting point, and being unapologetic about making bold, grand statements in a room’s design is at the core of what I do. Grandeur, whimsy and romance are the cornerstones of my style.

Where were you born/ where did you grow up? Born in Saigon, Vietnam. I grew up in dozens of different countries stretching from Borneo, Indonesia to Algeria, Africa. Please explain your relevant training/ work experience? 25 years ago, I started my training in the film industry regarding production design and 3D visualisation. From there I continued my work by building a small design firm specialising in restaurant and retail design. Within the last 15 years we have expanded our scope into luxury homes, hospitality and Casino design. Please describe the highlight of your career to date. Our last hospitality project pushed our focus and endurance to the limits because it covered so many spectrums of the design world. It was a hotel and casino project for which we designed over 200,000 square feet of interior and exterior spaces, which included 8 restaurant/bars and 260 hotel suites. How did achieving this make you feel? It took a lot for my team to coordinate and orchestrate this project along with hundreds of builders and craftsmen, but we did it and the project was completed in 24 months with great success. a resort project which allowed us to use a large array of custom lighting design to elevate each experience of the interior spaces. How would you describe your work/design style /ethos? My style of work always encompasses accents of classical architectural with modern lines and textures. How has the pandemic changed your outlook on work/ life? The outlook and work has mainly changed the direction of work with the understanding that every project could take 30 to 40% longer and more costly because of the pandemic.

How do you predict the pandemic will change the global design sector? Projects will be orchestrated differently with regards to schedules and supply chains that will be chosen to implement them. What are your thoughts on the future of design? I feel the future of design will be planned more with suppliers closer to the project location. The global export and import industry is so broken today that client or developer will do whatever they can to keep services from supply chains as local as possible. Please tell us your aims for the next twelve months and beyond? I aim to focus on quality projects and clients that I feel can influence more in my vision and design based on the scope of the environment and world today. How is your work evolving? Where were you born/ where did you grow up? Born in England and travelled extensively in childhood in the Far East including Japan, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Attended college in California, USA, and then returned to Hong Kong for a short period of my early career and then to London, where I have settled. Please describe the highlight of your career to date. I have been fortunate to have had many wonderful commissions during my career. One of my favourite projects was being awarded Claridge’s early on in my career as I just became obsessed with Art Deco which was a wonderful experience. After this another highlight was to design a private island in the Fiji Islands, South Pacific, again to fully immerse myself in creating a unique and authentic style that reflected the islands natural beauty. How did achieving this make you feel? Excited and grateful for the creative opportunity to express my own interpretation of these iconic designs. Where do you find inspiration for your work? I find inspiration in many things, nature is often a great resource for me. What projects are you currently working on? I am currently working on a vineyard in the South of France, which is another dream project, along with a Cotswold farmhouse which is equally rewarding. What areas of the design sector do you work in for the most part? I work in hospitality, residential development and private residential design.

38 The World’s Leading Design Names

Please describe the project you are most proud of to date, with reasons why this was a success? Laucala Island was a huge success from a design perspective, it allowed a very creative design process to evolve, which was very rewarding from start, during and finish. The interiors provide a seamless connection with the outstanding natural beauty so for me that was huge. How would you describe your work/design style /ethos? I do not have a house style that is imposed on clients or projects, I like to believe that each project undertaken is reviewed and designed individually to create the best solutions for location and client expectations. How has the pandemic changed your outlook on work/ life? I think the pandemic has affected all of us in small and larger ways, the ability to adapt in such circumstances is a good life lesson and to continue to do so as none of us really know what the next hurdle or opportunity might be. What are your thoughts on the future of design? Design keeps evolving as we continue with our journey in life, it is important for us to be aware of what is going on around us both politically, socially and environmentally and I believe this not only inspires but influences our design narrative. The World’s Leading Design Names 41

Where were you born/ where did you grow up? I was born in Lisbon in the 1960s and traded Portugal for Paris, France at the early age of 15 where I continued my high school studies at the German school.

The original white-and-blue tiles from the 18th century, its fresco paintings and stucco ceilings were preserved, and a new and palatial accommodation arose, marking the beginning of a new era in this historical landmark.

Please explain your relevant training/ work experience? I started off my professional formation in ENSAV in Versailles and graduated from the ESA Saint-Luc Institute of Architecture in Brussels in 1991. Then began my career in Paris where I started developing restaurant concepts and specialised in the creation of public spaces, conception and implementation of restaurants, hotels, bars, discos and stores globally. I lived several years in Belgium and in France, where I opened my own ateliers of architecture and design (CM&P in Brussels and MCM Design in Paris). I finally moved to Portugal where in 2016 I opened a new office, Miguel Câncio Martins - Architecture & Design, where 20 associates assist me on work internationally and in Portugal, designing projects for multinationals, real estate investors and individuals alike.

Please describe the project you are most proud of to date, with reasons why this was a success? Certainly Buddha Bar in Paris, that was done 22 years ago and is still a reference today… I must have done something right. The challenge at that time to do such a bar restaurant in a basement of a small unknown street without shops, the whole adventure to achieve that project and the final result, it was crazy.

Please describe the highlight of your career to date. One of my first works - BARFLY, designed in 1995, was followed by other famous restaurants in Paris such as Buddha Bar, Thiou, Man Ray, that led to my international recognition. Subsequently I expanded my work into areas such as shops, hotels, night clubs and private homes. Where do you find inspiration for your work? There is no rule or formula for my inspiration. I’m always very curious and observing everything that can be interesting for my work. It doesn’t need necessarily to be for a project that I’m working on right away but I think it’s important to store information. It’s not every day that your mind is in the mood for inspiration, so sometimes I need to be by myself, often very early in the morning, to be able to develop my work. What project(s) are you currently working on? Projects are a long process and have different stages so we can handle several projects at the same time at different stages. I like to put my nose everywhere so sometimes it’s difficult to manage them all the same way. This year we have more projects in Portugal where we have the knowhow and the skills to make it happen. Howeber we are working on a Hotel Project in Montenegro, casinos in Holland, real estate projects in Comporta, interiors of restaurants and houses. But the new masterpiece is Palácio Ludovice where I am in charge of the renovation works Tell us a little more about these project(s)... Palácio Ludovice Wine Hotel is located in a privileged location in the centre of Lisbon. It is a project under my care.

42 The World’s Leading Design Names

How would you describe your work/design style /ethos? Style without style. The most important thing is to realise the integration and functionality of the project, then the imagination takes care of the rest. I’m like a chameleon that adapts to all the situations. I love to do renovation in existing old buildings, to imagine how they did it and how they lived and to introduce my modern touch. How has the pandemic changed your outlook on work/ life? Each civilisation shock makes us think about our habits and what we could improve to make our life better. Life is short and those long periods of crises give us the opportunity to find new directions. We improved in the long distance communication but we understood the importance of the human contact, the community, the family and friends, the social life. The technical tools are there but we also saw the effect of the blackout of social media, even just for a few hours. So we should keep the feet on earth and stay connected without computers. What are your thoughts on the future of design? The world is constantly changing and design will adapt to all these changes and new realities. Please tell us your aims for the next twelve months and beyond? After Covid, I think we all realise that we can’t take anything for granted and it obviously made me rethink the way I work. Nevertheless, I still maintain the strategy to try to predict some of the possible challenges and plan my studio’s projects to make sure we accomplish each project successfully. Final thoughts In design, I see unlimited challenges. There is still everything to be done!

Where were you born/ where did you grow up? Born in Calgary Alberta Canada and grew up on an acreage in DeWinton Alberta. Please describe the highlight of your career to date. There has been so many! Each and every project I work on, I hold dear to my heart as it is a true expression of what I am most passionate about. When our clients love their completed projects, it is so rewarding and why we do what we do! Honestly, being asked to be featured in The World’s Leading Names Volume 11, last year and again, to participate in this year’s publication, Volume 12 is truly an honour. How did achieving this make you feel? Being asked to be featured in these world recognised publications makes me feel very grateful and fortunate to be able to share my talents and abilities with those that appreciate interior design. Where do you find inspiration for your work? When I am having ‘a day’, I have a note on my desk that I refer to. “Always strive to give your best at everything you take on. That is how you’ll succeed. And remember, don’t let praise go to your head, and don’t let criticism go to your heart”. These words of wisdom instantly inspire me to keep going and really put things into perspective. How do you relax and find your work/ life balance? When I’m not working, I love to escape to the Rocky Mountains to get some fresh air and to just be in nature. Having a good spa day or jet setting is also top of the list! What area(s) of the design sector do you work in for the most part? Predominantly, our projects are residential, but we do commercial projects as well; such as offices, cafe’s and restaurants. Please describe the project you are most proud of to date, with reasons why this was a success? There are many projects that I am proud of and that I love, but I guess the one that has received world recognition is our ‘Springbank Hill Project’ as it was shortlisted by design et al in four categories in 2019. Truly an incredible honour! How would you describe your work/design style /ethos? My personal design aesthetic is simple, yet sophisticated. Although we offer bespoke design for our clients that are specific to their personal needs and desires, with every project, my design intent is to create a timeless space that feels harmonious, liveable and inviting. How has the pandemic changed your outlook on work/ life? Change is the only thing that is constant in life. As a result of the pandemic, it has presented us with the opportunity to be adaptive and optimise our approach in working collaboratively with our trades and clients. With everyone spending so much time locked in their homes because of the pandemic, it is now more important than ever to love the place you call home. How do you predict the pandemic will change the global design sector? As we have already experienced, there are supply chain issues and worldwide product shortages which are driving up the prices for everything. Projects have been taking much longer than expected and budgets are increasing. In time, this will correct itself. What are your thoughts on the future of design? As designers, it is our responsibility to take a sustainable design approach with each and every design decision that we make. Sharing our knowledge with our clients and valuing our planet by eliminating the use of harmful and toxic products needs to be top priority. How is your work evolving? There is something to be said about working countless hours at a craft. I’ve been designing for over a decade and I feel like I’m just getting started! With every project, I learn something new. It keeps things exciting.

The World’s Leading Design Names 59

Where were you born/ where did you grow up? I come from a small town by Cracow, where I had spent my childhood and youth. Living in Warsaw now, I long for my father’s sunflower fields, rosemary decorated countryside paths and heather in the beech forest clearings. When visiting my parents, I take time to venture to these magical and sentimental places of my childhood. Please explain your relevant training/ work experience? As far as I may remember I loved drawing when I was a child. My drawings decorated the walls of my family house and my school notebooks. It was only natural for me to choose the university with an artistic faculty. I gained experience collaborating with monuments conservation workshops, Italian furniture manufacturers and with Polish producers of furniture and interior design articles. Where do you find inspiration for your work? Things which inspire us are all around. One just needs to be vigilant and to be able to notice an inspiration when it comes. When holding a glass of Portuguese Madera, one may be astonished with the deep brown colours brought out from this noble alcoholic beverage by rays of the setting sun. The shape of a prosecco bottle may inspire us when designing a table supporting leg. How do you relax and find your work/ life balance? I grew up next to meadows and forests. These are the places which still attract me and where I relax best. I like sports. Surf-kiting in the summer and skiing in the wintertime. I always manage to find time for a good book, film or a theatre play. I am passionate with painting and sculpture. What project(s) are you currently working on? The thematic range of the projects is very wide, starting from a small bottle label for a limited edition of 327 collector’s whisky bottles, through acoustic panels for the Polish Railways, a house tenement concept in Katowice city center, up to quite a large residential real estate. Tell us a little more about these project(s)… It is not an easy task at all to design a label which is just several square centimeters in size but judging by warm recommendations and rising price of this whisky collection, it seems that my job was well done. Acoustic panels design is a challenge too. The panels we are used to glancing at

60 The World’s Leading Design Names

when traveling by train are not very appealing to the eye. I suggested for them to be pieces of art which match the surrounding area they are fitted in. There will be different panels to be placed in towns and in the countryside, so the diversity will prevent panels of the same, boring design all over the country. The tenement house located in the downtown of Katowice is quite time occupying. The concept is to embed the building into the historic old town of this city. My proposition is to construct an Art Nouveau apartment building. As regards the 36-hectare plot, the investor’s idea is to put up a quiet luxury residential villa real estate consisting of 57 residential buildings with accompanying infrastructure. The place is charming. It is the investor’s wish for each house to be unique in style and that all of them have some architectural elements in common, to act as a unifying theme. Your thoughts on design I have just finished reading Winston Churchill’s biography. I fully share his thought “First we give shapes to buildings and then the buildings shape us”. What are your thoughts on the future of design? Observing current trends, I have an impression that architecture and design follow the bionic trail ever more decisively, by reflecting the shapes which may be found in nature aided by modern technologies. Bionic trend is most visible when one looks at the effect of work of car designers. One might have noticed the smooth, long Mercedes chassis lines few years back already as a result of their design work. Beautiful trendsetting, uncommon, delicate and subtle chassis lines. While working on new trend line concept, Mercedes changed its approach by resigning from the powerful style features characteristic of that car. In effect we will be able to see such beautiful cars on our roads any moment now. The same goes for architecture. Let’s just have a look at slick, rounded shapes of contemporary skyscrapers. There are no sharp edges to be seen. The elongated skyscrapers box-like shape is gradually a thing of the past. I think that soft, subtle style will increasingly infiltrate to other design areas. It’s only a matter of time. How is your work evolving? I experiment a lot. With new colours, new shapes, new materials. I am trying to utilise these experiments by enriching my designs.

Please explain your relevant training/ work experience? I began at Designworks USA in California, before moving to Munich to open the first European branch of Designworks USA and working for companies including all the BMW Group Members, founding Cayros design, specialised in super yacht design, in London and Switzerland. I came to Jet Aviation in 2009 as Senior Designer Project Manager, left in 2012 to pursue opportunities abroad, and then came back as Senior Project Manager in 2017, before taking over senior directorship of the Jet Aviation Design Studio in 2019. Please describe the highlight of your career to date. It is always a huge highlight to see a large project come to life. These long-term projects take significant time, effort and commitment, and you are completely immersed in them for the duration. To see them finished and ready to be redelivered into the world is a bit like seeing a child you have nurtured grow up and leave home. It is a bittersweet experience, but it makes me incredibly proud to see the designs lived in and enjoyed by our customers. Where do you find inspiration for your work? Inspiration comes from everywhere: interesting objects, beautiful places, a painting or piece of art — even the people you meet. Design is really a part of every aspect of our lives and there are always opportunities to discover new things that can surprise and inspire you. How do you relax and find your work/ life balance? For me, it is important to be able to completely switch of and focus on something that is outside of the work environment. Of course, design and design inspiration are a huge part of my life, both professionally and personally, and I love to visit museums, art galleries, and to travel, but I also love to spend time with my family and friends, and in nature as a part-time gamekeeper, which takes me away from the busy day-today. What projects are you currently working on? We are working on a number of wide and narrow-body concepts and completion projects. One thing that I love about my role is that every project is completely unique and offers its own set of creative challenges. We might be collaborating closely with a principal, working with another design studio and managing their project in-house, or working on an innovative concept to explore new design styles and possibilities.

70 The World’s Leading Design Names

How would you describe your work/design style /ethos? I lean towards a blend of timeless style with modern accents. A foundation of aesthetic, bespoke values that are built on sustainable traditions and historically proven perceptions, spiced up with more contemporary pieces that can change and evolve with trends. How has the pandemic changed your outlook on work/ life? The pandemic has been challenging for many of us in many different ways. As a Design Studio, we are an extremely collaborative team, and we have a close relationship with one another and with the materials which we work with. There is nothing like being together in-person to bounce ideas off one another. I am happy that our team is healthy and that we are able to work together in-person again in our Studio in Basel. What are your thoughts on the future of design? At the moment we are seeing design embrace the possibilities offered by new methods of manufacturing. Now, almost any shape is possible, and I believe that this sense of movement, freedom, and fresh, innovative styling is only going to get stronger. For example, we are seeing designs realised that previously would have been considered only as futuristic concepts. It’s a very exciting time in design and I am looking forward to seeing how we can integrate this innovative thinking into our own work at the Jet Aviation Design Studio. Which direction are you moving in from a design perspective? Our designs are driven by the needs of our customers, and as we see our customer base expand, so are we seeing our scope for design expand. We are working with customers from different age ranges, and different regions, and this naturally allows us to explore differing styles. I see a movement towards cabins that truly feel like a private home, which integrate all of the comforts and innovative technologies of a house or hotel, from design to environment. At the same time, we are exploring innovative, cutting-edge styles to suit a younger customer, who push us to look beyond our current portfolio and think in a different way. How is your work evolving? I am continuously surprised by how our already exceptional quality and craftsmanship seems to continue getting even better. Working with in-house engineering and production teams allows us to collaborate closely on a project, and continue to push the boundaries of design within private aviation and beyond.

The World’s Leading Design Names 73

Where were you born/ where did you grow up? Francesco: I was born in Salerno, Italy. However, I grew up between Naples and Rome.

Yasser: I was born and grew up in Alexandria, Egypt. Growing up in Alexandria, a Mediterranean city architecturally rich in details, has played a major role in me becoming an architect. Please explain your relevant training/ work experience? Francesco: I studied art and architecture in Italy, obtaining a master’s degree in 1992 from the Federico II University of Naples. I collaborated with the University for two years as a researcher in the History of Architecture and Planning courses. After various experiences in the field of conservation, I had the honour of following two prestigious interventions for the Jubilee 2000; Restoration of the Trevi Fountain and Restoration of the Cathedral of Sessa Aurunca. After a few months in Denmark for a Master, I collaborated with the arch. Massimiliano Fuksas for the Ferrari, Nardini and Etnapolis projects. In 2007 as an independent, I participated in several competitions in collaboration with Arup, winning one and achieving several mentions. In 2008 I started a collaboration with Prof. Naga in the United Arab Emirates, where I founded Whitespace Architects in 2011.

Yasser: I studied Architecture in Alexandria, Egypt followed by extensive programs in Architecture and management to refine my skills. I collaborated with Alex-med research centre, World bank, and Alexandria library for the renovation of the renowned Eastern Harbour which was celebrated and showcased in Venice Biennale. After extensive experience in the field of Architecture in Egypt, I moved to UAE where I had the honour of participating in multiple awarded projects located in GCC region such as Sawari project in Saudi. I then moved to Boston, USA for quite some time before returning to UAE to found WSA. Where do you find inspiration for your work? Francesco: From the imagination above all, when I walk down the street I always think ‘what I would like to see in that corner/street that could excite me’.

Yasser: You can almost find inspiration anywhere. Paying attention to the curves, edges, or designs of objects in your surroundings. Looking at bridges and buildings along my route and continuously contemplating how those design principles could be applied in future work.

What projects are you currently working on? We are lucky to work on several projects from mega developments with reputable clients in different countries such as UAE, Saudi & Egypt to small and medium sized interesting projects. Tell us a little more about these projects... We are currently handling the design of 12 different villa typologies on the Palm Jabel Ali, an exciting masterplan and architecture project in Wadi Hanifa in Saudi Arabia, a set of townhouses in the heart of Jumeriah, an exciting masterplan and architecture commission for a series of office and residential buildings in Mivida in Cairo, a challenging Urban Design exercise in Cairo Gate which includes a couple of office buildings, a hotel and serviced apartments along with tons of retail. Another interesting project in master planning and design of villas for the last available piece of land in Dubai Hills Estate. Please describe the project you are most proud of to date, with reasons why this was a success? Masdar small square is one of projects that we like the most, as it combines urban planning, architecture and sustainability. The outcome of the project is a beautifully synchronized experience. How do you predict the pandemic will change the global design sector? Francesco: The pandemic has been the most dramatic disruption to human activity in a generation. For many designers, it has been a time to refocus and rethink how we design products, buildings and cities. It has challenged us to reassess the old normals that we had based and organised our lives around. This includes paying more attention to the environment and the impact that humans are having on the Earth.

Yasser: With the world slowly adapting to life in a pandemic, architecture is being called upon to reshape our spaces as we look optimistically ahead to a post-pandemic world. Interventions like these mean we need to consider space in our current concern with infection control. Which direction are you moving in from a design perspective? Simplicity often denotes beauty, purity and clarity of thought in the design context. Simple buildings are neat and functional, using minimalistic elements which are showcased in their honest form. We are strong believers in “less is more”. By emphasising open space and revealing the industrial materials used in construction, we are helping in defining modern architecture in the region. We believe we are moving towards a design with a minimal framework of structural order balanced against the implied freedom of freeflowing open spaces.

The World’s Leading Design Names 81

How would you describe your personal interior design style? Italian contemporary meets California modern. I love wide open spaces with tall architectural ceilings, arched entrances and minimalist forms. Every piece should have a purpose. Art and furniture must have dialog. White with black are my go-to palette with pops of either soothing pastels or crisp primary colours. I like to emphasize a 360-degree view of our products using unique sewing techniques, materials and shapes that bring visual interest.

Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in the future? 1. The environment

Where does your design inspiration come from? I am drawn to beautiful things and have an unyielding curiosity. Traveling abroad or around

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to product design, what would it be? A diverse education balanced by apprenticeships is a really good balance for creative people. This way you learn the history and conventions of your discipline while using the tools of today in the practical environment. Study abroad is valuable too because it expands your ideas. Lastly, study art and artists, both new and old… they are society’s challengers.

the U.S. four times a year, I indulge in all that is around me architecture, street art, window shop, museums, art openings, cafes, theatre and concerts. Because design is art and artists push societal norms, this broadens my view of what design is and how it’s evolving… It’s best to see all kinds of expressions of art in so many different genres. In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense? Design is getting more technologically savvy. With the global pandemic and people sheltering in place, the push toward engaging virtually and shopping with augmented reality in the world of design arrived. Designers are working in digital rooms, with 3D rendering software now more than ever. They have brought their customers into the space and made it a tactile experience. Design has crossed over into VR/AR and we’re loving it.

2. Work from home spaces 3. Artisanal connection 4. Tactile textures 5. Comfortable luxury

Your favourite holiday destination? Ortygia, Sicily. Your favourite hotel, restaurant & bar? The Marina Bay Sands Luxury Hotel, Singapore; Aqua Al Due, Italy; InterContinental Carlton, Cannes. Your favourite food and drink? Homemade chocolate chip cookies and ice-cold milk; Pinot grigio Your favourite way to spend an afternoon? Sipping a café or tea with scones at a museum If you weren’t a designer, what would you be? Signer/musician. Anything else interesting? I secretly yearn to star in a period piece movie

The World’s Leading Design Names 87

Where were you born/ where did you grow up? Christchurch, New Zealand Please explain your relevant training/ work experience? I have been bought up in the industry through our family business so I have had the best training anyone can possibly have through being on the job and having a lifetime of experience to draw from. Please describe the highlight of your career to date. The highlight for me so far would be opening our three interior design stores throughout New Zealand, along with winning a design et al Award a few years ago! How did achieving this make you feel? Fantastic! To accomplish a dream and grow that dream into reality just feeds your passion for the industry. Where do you find inspiration for your work? I am continuously inspired each day by design, through architecture, interior design and classic furniture design where the classic detailing provides a signature style. I also enjoy and am inspired by fashion, art and antiques. Natural materials inspire me for their unique, classic qualities; marbles, stone and the character you get from solid timbers. What project(s) are you currently working on? Currently some very exciting projects; a number of coastal homes with spectacular ocean views, a series of luxury apartments which we are working through floor by floor, each in a unique, different style. There are also several beautifully appointed architectural homes throughout New Zealand which are all currently in progress at various stages. Tell us a little more about these projects... The luxury apartments are super interesting as the client who is selling each apartment in his building wants each apartment to be different, nothing repeated and for each to have its own character and style. Please describe the project you are most proud of to date, with reasons why this was a success? Probably the luxury apartment complex as there are a number of apartments in the building and to make each unique provides the opportunity to showcase the depth of interior design I can offer on projects without being tied to one particular look.

How would you describe your work/design style /ethos? It is sophisticated, elegant and opulent. It is design with intriguing layers of classic textures and materials, encapsulating refinement set on a grand scale. Classic & Timeless. How has the pandemic changed your outlook on work/ life? It has offered a unique opportunity to make certain our processes can withstand a remote work environment for all our staff but then also to be able to work with clients effectively with all of their design choices. It has also shown how important a work / life balance is. How do you predict the pandemic will change the global design sector? I think it will be great for the industry, forcing it to make everything digital yet still visually inspiring. It has made looking at products online more realistic through 360 imagery and applications to choose and select various finishes but giving a very real look to its application. What are your thoughts on the future of design? In a touch of a button we will have everything at our finger tips to consider various design options which previously would have taken a lot of time to render and implement. It will be very realistic. Please tell us your aims for the next twelve months and beyond? To continue to improve on a daily basis our clients experience on our website along with continuing to provide exceptional interior design work. Which direction are you moving in from a design perspective? Whilst most of our interiors are classic, I think it’s important to add something a little unexpected in a design without it being out of place. The introduction of splashes of colour in textiles is just one example of something we have started to use more in our schemes. How is your work evolving? As the world evolves throughout this pandemic I think my work will also evolve, adapt and improve to be more captivating than it was previously.

MARCO BRAGHIROLI FOUNDER & MANAGING DIRECTOR PRESTIGE ARCHITECTS Marco completed his architectural studies at the Politecnico of Milan and later studied interior design at the University of Hasselt in Belgium. The year 2000, saw Marco move to London where he worked for some of the UK’s leading architectural firms in traditional architecture, soon becoming senior associate and working on iconic academic college projects for Cambridge and Oxford. In 2003, Marco discovered his love for private residential design and began to focus his energy in this field. Launching Prestige in 2009, Marco and his team continue to deliver beautifully bespoke and luxurious private properties, strengthening his reputation for design excellence in this market.

The World’s Leading Design Names 91

Where were you born/ where did you grow up? I was born and raised in Milan, Italy until completion of my Architectural studies at the Politecnico di Milan. I later studied interior architecture at Provinciale Hogenschool, in Limburg, Belgium. Please explain your relevant training/ work experience? Coming from a family of Architects I grew up with discussion and interests in Architecture, during my university studies, I was working in Milan for different companies where I gained invaluable experience in different sectors of architecture - from commercial buildings to educational institutions. Seeking a professional independence I moved to London in 2000 and started the adventure by working for several years in high end residential practices with large projects in the UK and abroad until opening my business in 2009.

Tell us a little more about these projects... The majority of our projects are prime private residential projects so they are individually very different in terms of design and also requirements. They fit an international clientele with their specific needs and behaviours including religious ones as in some projects we need to ensure we allocate spaces dedicated to icons or indeed temples. How has the pandemic changed your outlook on work/ life? I have set up the business to be remotely accessible years ago since the beginning to ensure that the internal team will have the opportunity of a work/life balance so for us there was no change in mode of operating when the pandemic hit. What people considered an unusual structure of the business when I started, appears now to be the norm across the industry.

Please describe the highlight of your career to date. Despite the numerous successes and completed projects of various scales in the UK and abroad whilst working as senior associate in other practices I feel the highlight of my career has been the day that I decided to open Prestige Architects and going solo. Since that day the business, team and projects have been steadily growing.

How do you predict the pandemic will change the global design sector? I suspect that the design sector will look at more locally sourced materials and manufactures as the biggest problem we have faced during the pandemic was the difficulty in delivery from abroad which has forced us to start re-focusing on a more local supply chain.

How did achieving this make you feel? I always look forward but when looking back at what we have achieved in the last few years it makes me proud to see our happy clients and keeps the momentum going on an exciting future.

What are your thoughts on the future of design? We will adapt as always and probably review our position on the design development and sourcing. I am a supporter of the wellbeing architectural approach and the pandemic has built a lot of bridges in client’s priority and requirements making the wellbeing no longer an exclusive feature but a more focused requirement which I think is a fantastic improvement. The next challenge for us will be to drive the same attention to environmental approach too.

Where do you find inspiration for your work? Inspiration for me is everywhere on a daily basis, I have the habit of taking pictures or saving links of new materials or completed projects that can be of inspiration for future design. Also nature is a great source of inspiration for colours and shape, we just finished a project in Belgravia where the main staircase was inspired by the shape of a tree I saw during one of my travels and it is stunning. What projects are you currently working on? Currently most of our work is in London, largely due to the pandemic. We are working on a variety of extensions and refurbishments on properties in St. James, Chelsea, Kensington and Notting Hill. Abroad we are still working on our institutional projects in Ghana and starting to work on private villas in both Switzerland and Sardinia, Italy.

92 The World’s Leading Design Names

Which direction are you moving in from a design perspective? I will be welcoming a more focused design approach around technology integration for a better home environment which will be an integral part of the client brief from the beginning of the process. Our next step as designers I think will be liaising with the energy consumption that this requires with a keen eye to the environmental solutions.

Let us inspire your design journey...

Nature and what’s around me mostly, and of course a lot of reading up on what pique my interest at the moment. How do you relax and find your work/ life balance? Family time is crucial for me. Putting away an entire’s day solving design and build issues can be hard at times, but it’s the time spent with family that allows me to re-charge and find renewed zeal and energy. What projects are you currently working on? There are several we are currently working on that’s in the pipelines, we can’t really go into too much details. We are working on a couple of hospitality projects, some commercial and residential showflats and sales galleries. What areas of the design sector do you work in for the most part? Commercial showflats, show galleries, residential and hospitality. Please describe the project you are most proud of to date, with reasons why this was a success? I am proud of all my projects as each and every one of them were conceived from conceptualization to fruition. A lot time and effort were put in to make all the designs are done thoughtfully and executed accurately respecting the design intent. To be able to complete each and every project to my

vision and to the satisfaction of the end user is nothing but success in my books. How would you describe your work/design style /ethos? To be my most authentic self and always looking to innovate and trying new combination of design, materials and form. I am constantly looking at different approach to presenting a space, never resting on my laurel. How has the pandemic changed your outlook on work/ life? This pandemic has indeed changed not only my outlook but also many others I’m sure. in 2003 during the SARS outbreak, we all thought the world was going to end. Alot of hotel owners and operators took that downturn to refurbish, but this pandemic it’s totally different. Not only was it drawn out for much longer, it was also on a global scale, not to mention the toll it has taken in the tourism industry. This pandemic taught me to look within ourselves and to our own resolve. And evaluate what is really important in my personal life. On the work front, it has also taught us to be innovative. With borders locked down and travels restricted, we had to be creative on how we can solve problems and work remotely. In fact we completed two projects during the first 9 months of the pandemic with support from the ground and managing a team virtually. How do you predict the pandemic will change the global design sector? This pandemic has defintely changed the way we live and interact. It has also taught us to be nimble and to be able to quickly react to changes. The emphasis on health products and anti-bacteria surfaces have indeed seen a surge in demand, and there are more interests and requests for these products. We have also seen more requests on adaptable and flexible spaces. So definitely these demand has only started to build more momentum. What are your thoughts on the future of design? The world of design is forever evolving.. one cannot truly predict what the future holds. Having said that, as the population gets more worldly and having been through tough times especially these 2 years, it’s only natural that everyone’s aim to have a work life balance. Hence, spaces will be more defined and designs more functional and simplistic.

The perception of space has its own unique identifier to each person. A sense of place is more often how what we like to be identified with, how exhilarated we get when we interact with that space.

Every space we interact with holds special memories. At A.RK we believe that a strong sense of place is of utmost importance in every project we worked on.

Be it the warmth of your home, the breathtaking view from a luxurious resort, the grand lobby that exudes elegance and yet has the cosiness of your living room; spaces like these can’t help but touches the depth of your soul.

As a boutique-sized interior designer studio, we believe in delivering intricate, exquisite and practical design and form to every single project. We care to bring you the experience, that sense of belonging and the emotional bond of each space.

LAURA POMPONI CEO & FOUNDER LUXURY PROJECTS ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN ATELIER In 2008 after a significant experience working on superyacht projects at a reputable Shipyard, Laura Pomponi founded Luxury Projects (LP) Architecture and Design Atelier. Luxury Projects guides clients from the initial concept design and first sketch, all the way to the selection of the final touch accessories and art works.

The World’s Leading Design Names 101

Where were you born/ where did you grow up? Born in Rome and growing up in Ancona, Italy, I was surrounded by fashion designers, including my grandmother! During my childhood, I was at the monastery every day in the summers to learn the art of complicated embroidery. When I was a teenager I was sent to England to study English in these long summers. I then chose to study engineering because I am really passionate about maths and complicated equations, this explains the decision to take a decidedly more technical vocation. Please explain your relevant training/ work experience? Regardless of an artistic flair, I decided to study technical engineering at Ancona Polytechnic University with a PHD in Engineering. After graduation I began working for the large Italian hi-tech company, Telecom Italia Mobiles and travelled the world in my role. Italy eventually beckoned me back to my shores, where my professional life would take a different direction in 2002 when I accepted the challenge of starting to work in shipbuilding. After a long experience in project management at a superyacht builder, my strong passion for art and design and for material research and finding innovative applications, I decided to put the entrepreneurial ambitions I’d had since childhood into action. I founded Luxury Projects Design Studio and Atelier, headquartered in Ancona in 2008.

for decorators, designers and administrators as well as expanding to 600 square meters our showroom and reception area to receive clients and show what we can do for them. At the same time, we have opened a new office in Viareggio where we produce architectural drawings for our projects, where we will do project management and provide in technical assistance but also can comfortably receive clients in a laid-back homey atmosphere. What area(s) of the design sector do you work in for the most part? Today, Luxury Projects is made up of a strong team of 15, from different nationalities, and various backgrounds and disciplines. Although the residential side of design is still something that is very present within the business, our heart really lies in superyacht design, something reflected in the fact that the business in split 70-30 between the two sectors. The passion for superyachts is connected with the challenge of the build. The clients on both sides are very demanding, but the spaces on board yachts are very different to residential.

Where do you find inspiration for your work? Culture and ever inspiring travelling generates creativity. At Luxury Projects we translate emotions and needs into physical shapes as you think them, as you see them, as you want them. Strongly passionate to be perfect, we devote our skills in bespoke timeless interiors “Design for Your Life”. What I like about the construction of a yacht is the intricacy of the process. It’s like a DNA spiral, and I love solving these complex issues.

Please describe the project you are most proud of to date, with reasons why this was a success? MY Moonstone has been an amazing experience as a first Dutch yacht build from scratch. From creating a concept for a yacht to be built on speculation, trying to imagine and create the best interiors selling points, to the new Owners selected bespoke LP designed loose furniture, lights, linens, accessories and delivered in less than four months. A real challenge with a great success due to teamwork and great project managing, with our dedicated Italian suppliers and artisan workshops we realised an on-time delivery and installation with astonishing quality. It’s amazing what we achieved. The result is all we have dreamed of, and we are so very proud.

What project(s) are you currently working on? After delivering three big yachts, the 70m MY Alkhor, MY Nero 90mt and MY Moonstone, a new Dutch build of 60mt, we are happy that also high-end residential projects around the world are starting again. New properties in Monaco and Uzbekistan are just a new start with some other yacht projects, which we are still not allowed to mention.

What are your thoughts on the future of design? We must answer the needs of our New Age Clients. What works well for today’s yacht owner is usable spaces that invite you to enjoy. They love natural materials with durable finishes. The materials contribute in the comfy, home feeling of the ambience that apparently is high on the wish list of today’s new yacht owners.

Luxury Projects recently entered the next decade. We are seriously expanding our Design Atelier in Ancona and, as we speak, we are realising additional workstations

Final thoughts Having the chance to express our talent, creativity and knowledge is a gift!

Where were you born/ where did you grow up? I was born and grew up in Russia, Moscow. Please explain your relevant training/ work experience? I’m professional Designer and Architect with almost 30 years of professional experience and daily practicing on my projects all over the world. Please describe the highlight of your career to date. A permanent and endless flow of creativity and imagination allowed me to win the status of celebrity and reputation of a Designer with deep talent. How did achieving this make you feel? I realised that this is just the beginning and we need to move on without slowing down. Where do you find inspiration for your work? Someone great said, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder”. If your eyes see beauty in everything without exception, you’ve been inspired by everything that you see! How do you relax and find your work/ life balance? Make time for myself and my loved ones. While my job is very important, it shouldn’t be my entire life. Achieving work-life balance requires deliberate action. No matter how hectic my schedule might be, I ultimately have control of my time and life. When planning time with my loved ones I create a calendar for romantic and family dates. It may seem weird to plan one-on-one time with someone I live with, but it will ensure that I spend quality time with them without work-life conflict. Just because work keeps me busy doesn’t mean I should neglect personal relationships. Has this changed in recent years? In recent years, everything has only improved, because our life is becoming more and more beautiful from year to year! How has the pandemic changed your outlook on work/ life? The past crisis turned out to be an effective shake-up for companies that have already gained prestige in the creation of interiors. Modesty is no longer in vogue, courage and experiment came to the fore! Premieres of new projects showcase undisguised luxury, vibrant colours, solid finishes, unusual sophistication and new world records! What projects are you currently working on? I have devoted a year and a half of my life to the most unique project, the “Perla de Oro Estate” with an amazing recreation

of the interiors of the Italian Renaissance, and soon I will present this Masterpiece for the admiration of the general public! Tell us a little more about these projects... Seeing it once will be better than any words ... coming soon. What areas of the design sector do you work in for the most part? Our company has a huge number of completed projects in completely different styles from minimalism to baroque with budgets from economy to premium. Please describe the project you are most proud of to date, with reasons why this was a success? I’ve reached such a high level of recognition of my talent that my clients pay for my pleasures! And my pleasure is my executed projects of their homes. Each project that I have done I’m proud off! How would you describe your work/design style /ethos? Quintessence between practically and harmony is a proper way to reach perfect design! What are your thoughts on the future of design? Interior as an art when every detail is selected in such a way that the interior becomes a single story, just as an artist gradually draws his brilliant canvas. Please tell us your aims for the next twelve months and beyond? My current plan is not only to create new houses, palaces and interiors, but to take the liberty, relying on my many years of experience, to breathe new life into historical buildings and estates, returning them to their former glory and splendour! Which direction are you moving in from a design perspective? The designer is only a guide, between real art and the wishes of the client! How is your work evolving? Swiftly. Bright. Enchanting Final thought I don’t insist that everyone live “glamorously”, but once you try it there’s no turning back.
