Over the past four or five years, with the expansion of The International Design & Architecture Awards, we have been fortunate enough to see design schemes entered from throughout the world, each bringing their own particular stance, sense of style and direction. I love the idea of featuring design in all its forms, with projects as rich as they are culturally diverse. Diversity in design inspires us, allows us to step outside our norms and parameters and look at a situation from a broader perspective and for this reason I love the global influences that we see on the pages of design et al each month. Despite this

fact however I increasingly find myself inclined to make comments suggesting that London really is one of a few cities in the world that can consider itself a design capital.

With this in mind we have taken a closer look at London Design Week in this issue, talking to key suppliers and influential designers from all sectors about their new collections of course, but more than that their feelings and thoughts not only on Design Week but design in London in a broader sense.

From here we take design inspiration once again from designers and architects throughout the world and also take a quick look at some of the projects short listed for this years awards.

LONDON DESIGN WEEK 2015 There is no doubt the London is a design capital, one of the worlds leading hot spots for sophisticated design, trends and direction. So with this in mind we took a closer look at London Design Week. Our aim being to speak to designers, retailers and influencers about what

How do you feel London works as a design destination on a global scale?

Which sectors are you currently working with/ supplying to?

London is such a great creative city for all areas in design, and I think it works extremely well as a design destination on a global scale. There is such a wide variety of talent and innovation here from from all over the world making it truly diverse. London is also home to some of the best design schools, galleries and designers in the world so there is so much inspiration around.

We work on commercial and residential projects for design and also supply our products to other interior and big architect companies and directly to consumers coming into our showroom.

Are your clients currently U.K based for the most part or do you work in other regions of the world?

For my interior design work, the majority of my clients right now are UK based, including clients from foreign countries who live in the UK, however I also have clients from all over Europe. This year I wish to expand to Africa and the US. On the other hand, our furniture clients are international!

Tell us a little about your latest collection?

I have just launched my 1950s Chair Collection, It features 3 strikingly unique vintage cocktail chairs which I have redesigned and reupholstered with luxury velvet fabric in a contemporary pattern.

I’m very much looking forward to exploring the fresh, new offerings at design week. I am also excited to start work on brand new furniture collections and commercial projects both here and overseas.

How do you feel London works as a design destination on a global scale?

London is more and more the place to be in the interior design world. Partly because of the offer and also because interior projects have become more and more global. (eg : London based decorator, palace in the Middle East and upholster in Italy) We tend to do more and more bespoke wallpapers, passementerie and fabrics and our studio works very closely with interior designers and architects to create exactly what is required.

We also work from archive documents, especially on restoration projects.

Are your clients currently U.K based for the most part or do you work in other regions of the world?

We have always been international, our first step in the UAE was the commission of fabrics when the Burj Al Arab was built.

My ancestors were architects and even in the 19th century they already worked world wide with the designs of Washington Cathedral or the University of Bombay‌ now landmarks of this country: the Red Telephone Box, the Tate Gallery.... They created Watts of Westminster as a design house to commercialize fabrics and wallpapers they were designing for their building projects Which sectors are you currently working with/ supplying to?

We are working on new contemporary very beautiful tiebacks - some with crystal (see photo below), we are increasing our hand blocked wallpapers and focusing on upholstery fabrics.

London acts as a good hub for the design industry, whilst there are other more important fairs and exhibitions worldwide the Design Centre acts as a year round hub.

Decca in the UK is a branch office of an international business. Our USA business and Asia business are both larger than the European section.

Tell us a little about your latest collection.

Standing out from anything Decca has done before COSMOPOLITAN by Dakota Jackson offers a feast for the demands of today’s luxury market; combining the opulence of polished brass and marble with soft veneers and earthy imperious leathers for uncompromised comfort. This collaboration has had huge success in the States already, Dakota Jackson coming from a family of magicians, and having not only designed furniture but even an edition of 300 pianos for Steinway & Sons, has kept the press fascinated and Interior Designers yearning for more.

CHRISTOPHER DEZILLE Company Position within company

How do you feel London works as a design destination on a global scale?

For me London is the centre of everything for design. The majority of our supply chain is either based here, or has representation in some form, whether it’s a dedicated showroom or appointed agent. Of course there are always exceptions to this rule. We deal with Artisans throughout Europe, and deal direct with a number of artists and suppliers further a field in the US, South America, and the far east. I find London perfectly placed to enable easy access to these suppliers the majority of which ship directly.

Are your clients currently U.K based for the most part or do you work in other regions of the world?

The majority of our projects keep us close to home in and around London and the home counties. However we regularly undertake projects across Europe and Further a field, ranging from Family Villa’s, Penthouse apartments, or Alpine retreats, most recently we were involved in the design of a boutique hotel in Montenegro.

Which sectors are you currently working in?

Predominantly focused in Residential Interior Architecture & Design, however we have been involved in a number of commercial and hospitality projects. We have recently expanded the team and have brought in designers with experience working with aviation and yachts. Previously we have found this area to be a bit of a “closed shop”, but perhaps the opportunity will present itself in the future.

We are a busy practice, handling between 40-50 projects of varying size at any one time. These projects range from international private clients, development specification, and properties varying from Triplex penthouses in Westminster to Barn conversations in the Cotswolds.

How do you feel London works as a design destination on a global scale?

London is, and always will be an important destination for those looking for fresh design inspirations. It provides a wealth of key design exhibitions and shows, that attract the major buyers from around the world as well as individual private collection launch events. The arts, fashion and interior design industries have always been core to London, our universities and colleges produce some exceptional designers and young talent, this is also the reason many important designers have London bases. There are clearly key locations in the design world, and London is an essential destination on the buyers list of “Not to Miss” places to source and be inspired.

Are your clients currently U.K based for the most part or do you work in other regions of the world?

The majority of our clients are UK based but often have clients or offices abroad and as a result. Equally we work with both consumers and interior designers/ specifiers worldwide.

We specialise in bespoke handcrafted carpets and rugs, tailored to each client’s exact requirements (bespoke example shown), as well as offering our stock ranges in

Our new luxurious Wilton Loop Pile design made from New Zealand Wool and Viscose mix in a wonderful variety of contemporary designs, will shortly be on display in our London showrooms. London is always a forerunner to new trends, and we have some of the best talent in the world when it comes to Interior Designers. We feel very privileged to be a part of the London design community and to contribute to some of the most interesting projects in the country, drawing not only on current design trends, but on those from times past.

LESLEY ZAAL Company Position within company

How do you feel London works as a design destination on a global scale?

London has some amazing Interior Designers and Chelsea Harbour is a fantastic resource centre for Designers. Also, the various Design Shows such as 100% design and Decorex attracts international designers and suppliers. London I would say has plenty to offer designers from all over the globe.

Are your clients currently U.K based for the most part or do you work in other regions of the world?

Most of our clients are based in the Middle East but often have homes in UK and Europe. We have just completed another “Reserve Villa” in Al Barari for a private client.

The remit was to create a spacious family home with a modern look but still keeping both luxury and comfort in mind. The villa has 7 bedrooms plus a home cinema and study plus a family gym. Having already completed a similar villa for the same client last year we had to come up with a completely different look and feel and the client is absolutely delighted with his new home.

The challenge for us was bearing in mind the family needs and still creating a completely different look and feel. Currently we are working on a “show villa’ for the

same developer prior to the launch in April.This villa is a 4 bedroom home that will appeal to young families based in Dubai who want to have a contemporary home with all the facilities they expect and within easy reach of the financial heart of Dubai.

Which sectors are you currently working with/ supplying to?

Currently we have quite a lot of our suppliers for furniture and accessories from UK. - Domestic interior design - Approximately 60% of our suppliers are UK based.

- Commercial interior design - We are currently working on a resort Concept in Dubai.

- Yachts - Aviation Etcetera Living continues to benefit from a very healthy property market in the UAE and we are happy that we have several clients who are repeat customers. Dubai has established itself as a central hub for the financial sector so the market for high end Interiors should stay in a healthy position. The future of Dubai is bright!

How do you feel London works as a design destination on a global scale?

A canvas for high end design, London is extremely versatile- from slick city apartments to grand mansions in Greater London, designers have so much to work with. This city is a hub of innovative, futuristic design and mega talent, and it’s not just the capital of the UK, it is the capital of the world – you can find anything here, if you know where to look.

Are your clients currently U.K based for the most part or do you work in other regions of the world?

It’s a 50/50 split between UK and overseas projects.

We have designed homes for many overseas investors who have brought in London, a city which is recognised globally as a strong, safe market. We also find our clients in the UK often ask us to work for them again on their second or third homes abroad, expanding our portfolio across Europe and the Middle East.

Tell us a little about your new collection.

Our new collection that we will be launching for Design Week includes a smart occasional table, the Alsop table, which is not only a new design for DAVIDSON but also showcases a new finish. Furthermore, we will also launching some very elegant new chair designs with the arms and legs being offered in range of luxurious finishes, only available at DAVIDSON, as well as two beautifully shaped consoles with clean, curved lines. To tell you a little bit more about the new finish we are launching for Design Week, this beautiful new tint of sycamore will be named ‘sycamore dusk’ and we are finding it works excellent combined with polished gold detailing due to its warmer tones. Last year saw a trend for darker timbers, such as our ever popular sycamore black and sycamore grey, combined with cool polished nickel detailing. This year however sees a trend for warmer tones of gold and bronze alongside warmer timbers.

How do you feel London works as a design destination on a global scale?

London is an extremely diverse city that draws in some of the best interior design minds. We are very lucky to have all the design influences which London has to offer at our fingertips. From the ultra-contemporary to the classically traditional, whether you look to architecture, interior design or art, designers and inspired thinkers from all around the globe are able to draw creative insight from the city. It is a true melting pot of design.

The rich cultural heritage that London has to offer also plays a part in design. I find inspiration anywhere and everywhere, in every room, space or building as well as through the theatre and ballet.

Are your clients currently U.K based for the most part or do you work in other regions of the world?

Most recently, I have been working on my very first book, ‘Interiors for Living’ which I am pleased to be releasing in March and I hope to encourage readers to find design inspiration in any space or room as well as in the city they live in. Showcasing nine projects from our vast portfolio, the book demonstrates the wonderful variety of the projects that we work on from contemporary to more traditional schemes. Our surroundings, cultural experiences and everyday lives play such an important role in our way of thinking about design and I hope that those who read my book will find the projects insightful.

The practice is large enough to handle multiple contracts in a multitude of locations, both in the UK and worldwide. We are currently working on major developments in St James’s, Holland Park and Belgravia along with projects in Berkshire, Paris, New York and the Middle East.

London is the capital of the world ! There is a constant affluence of new people in London from all over the world and a constant fusion of heritages.

I believe that makes London the number 1 design destination.

We have an international client base, designing houses in New York, Geneva and London.

Often our client’s ask us to design the interiors of all their residences; from London houses to their Chalets or Parisian Apartments.

We have curated a compendium of new furniture,

lighting and upholstered furniture which encapsulates a sophisticated design aesthetic that lends itself to pared back spaces. These pieces tread a thin line between sculptural and functional design with metal, stone and raw materials playing a key part.

We have focussed on simple upholstery and a fresh palette which allows the elegant gold lines of the furniture to become elevated beyond the ordinary.

Preserving The Patina Of The Past Ansty Manor, Dorset, UK by Sims Hilditch

Ansty Manor is a spectacular manor house in the heart of the rolling Dorset countryside. The Grade II listed building was a restoration project undertaken by the renowned Gloucestershire-based Sims Hilditich. Short listed in the Residential £1-2.5 Million category of the International Design & Architecture Awards 2014, Ansty Manor is a prime example of a historic home transformed into a comfortable, practical and cosy family home.

Commissioned by a London-based client, Sims Hilditch were required to undertake a complete restoration of Ansty Manor, having last undergone a refurbishment in the 1980’s.

The aim was to preserve the patina of the past, whilst seamlessly mixing in a modern aesthetic to create a more comfortable and elegant family home.

In collaboration with BLA Architects, the priority for Sims Hilditch was to ensure the ground floor spaces flow. The existing kitchen was impractically small and not in a central location. This was addressed by moving the kitchen to one of the main reception rooms, which was able to allocate a large light filled room to become the new ‘heart of the home’.

Sims Hilditch are currently working on several projects from across the United Kingdom. This includes company’s own design studio and showroom based just outside the historic city of Bath. The Grade II Listed former public house is being renovated and transformed into a modern light studio to showcase designs. With 5,000 square foot of showroom and design office space, it will become a centre of excellence, showcasing lighting, home automation, furnishings and a spectacular kitchen display.

The interior design practice are working on a country manor house in the home counties.

The brief is to produce a comfortable family home, furnished with a combination of traditional antiques and new pieces, some with a rustic nature to add texture and interest. Sims Hilditch are also in the process of rennovating a beautiful collection of farm buildings centred around a Grade II listed Pig Sty, which will be created into a wonderful family home with a comfortable and relaxed interior.

Following the redesign, Sims Hilditch worked closely with Listed Buildings alongside the architect to retain the many exquisite and historic features of the property.

BLA designed a contemporary glass and copper garden room offering a dramatic juxtaposition between old and new.

Flower Hill is a breathtaking property situated in the Caribbean island of Jamaica.

With architecture from the Dallas-based Smith Ekblad & Associates, the client requested the property to “reveal and honour the country’s heritage.” Short listed in the Beach House category at the International Design & Architecture Awards 2014, Flower Hill was a spectacular project submitted by Smith Ekblad & Associates.

The clients’ decision to build a vacation retreat in Jamaica came after years of enjoying the island and its vibrant culture.

In appreciation for the area’s history and people, they observed many local traditions during the planning and building process.

Not only did they engage local builders and craftsmen using native techniques, but they respected spiritual traditions by welcoming a house blessing by a local holy man.

Planned as both a personal refuge and a rental property, the structure needed to accommodate a variety of activities and types and sizes of groups. As serious art collectors, the owners selected art by significant Jamaican painters and sculptors.

The designer also worked directly with local artisans, furniture makers, and fabricators to create many items for the house, although the majority of building materials and furnishings required shipping to this relatively isolated island.

LED and natural lighting were unified throughout to conserve energy. Low maintenance textiles, insect resistant woods, and other materials were used both inside and out of this airy and comfortable home.

New, repurposed, and antique furniture were combined in an effect to avoid a too “new” or overly decorated look. A simple watery

palette unifies the fabrics, pool tiles, and metals on the broad verandas while lighter, more “Jamaican” colours were used to further reflect the happy and brightly hued palette so deeply associated with this beautiful nation.

The clients did not just seek a beach house in Jamaica; after years of visiting the island, they came to passionately love the culture and its people. In the end, the house and surrounding grounds are a perfect mix of traditional classicism, modern technology, and tropical colour.

Left: Further shortlist success for Figura in the International Design & Architecture Awards 2015 Figura have been shortlisted for the Kitchen Over £50,000 award in The International Design & Architecture Awards 2015.

The brief was to turn a disused coach house stable which was attached to the main house in to a magnificent central statement kitchen incorporating the stunning hidden walled garden. Washed tulip wood furniture accentuates the light coming in from three large windows and picks up the delicate Aga powder blue beautifully and contrasts with the bold raspberry pink. The iroko breakfast bar inlay sits perfectly with the solid honed Verdi fontain granite. The vast room allows for the raspberry pink to be both fun and individual but not to overwhelm the furniture or the dictate the feel of the entire space.

The designers’ favourite aspect of the project is the vast breakfast bar with its textured solid honed Verdi fontain granite is a stunning centre piece which roots the room and provides the main hub for this large space. The design brings together all the different elements in the room – the light, the gardens, the height and vastness of the room with warmth, vibrancy and elegance.

The brief was to create a heart and hub for the house and family of six busy and sociable inhabitants, which was beautiful and practical.

All the spaces have been created to make the most of this property’s fantastic unobstructed far-reaching countryside views. Varying textures and finishes such as unique oak, painted tulip wood and luxurious piracema granite contrast and compliment, while the use of curves help accentuate space whilst promoting the effortless flow of traffic throughout.

At the centre is a cleverly designed multifunctional island providing a central spot for informal dining, a workstation and somewhere to relax with coffee or a glass of wine. The kitchen has been created to intelligently link all the rooms in the home with a formal dining room, cooking area, a walk in larder, informal 12seater dining area and study area/workstation.

LINLEY – Chalet Kitchen, winner of the Kitchen over 100,000 Awards For this project, LINLEY were asked to provide a kitchen in a private client’s chalet in the Austrian Tyrol. The client had worked with LINLEY in the past and knew that the company had recently diversified into Fitted Cabinetry incorporating Kitchens, Bedrooms, Media Rooms and Wine Rooms.

Their brief was to fuse LINLEY’s quality cabinet-making with a contemporary kitchen design in order to complement the use of indigenous materials, which characterise the interior of the chalet.

Although a new-build, the exterior was designed to blend harmoniously with the surrounding architecture and landscape.

A key instruction from the client was to incorporate reclaimed Austrian Stone Hearted Spruce, which is used as a defining accent in the rest of the chalet.

Once selected, the timber was shipped

back to the UK to the LINLEY workshop to the excitement of their cabinetmakers who have never had to work with timber quite this ‘characterful’. The natural peculiarities of the material required incredibly careful selection and preparation. In collaboration with the client, it was reworked into this unique design before sending it back to Austria to be installed on site where it was then oil-finished with the grain enhanced by a secret blanching agent that the local joiners shared with the LINLEY team.

Locally supplied granite floors and Mystic Grey satino finished granite worktops add a cool contrast to the timber whilst beaten copper splash backs and glass and steel appliances brings razor-sharp, cool character to the space. Cochrane Design - The White House, winner of the Kitchen over 25,000 Award The project is a collaboration between Sean Cochrane and Meg Mathews to redesign her fire-damaged home.

The brief was to create a light, bright, open plan, contemporary space with a minimalist aesthetic at the heart of the design scheme.

The kitchen had to be both functional and exceptionally beautiful; therefore the choice of materials for the Island was of paramount importance. After copious testing with client’s chosen contractor, Unique Construction, the Island drawers were created with an arched wooden frame

wrapped in durable resin. The final result was a stunning, seamless and sculpted curved shape. Corian work surfaces were used throughout the kitchen as they appealed to Meg’s modern aesthetic, and as a finishing touch, Cochrane Design managed to obtain the prototype white Zip Hot Tap which completed the bespoke pristine white centre piece.

The pale grey, ultra smooth concrete flooring was constructed with under-floor heating and up lighters set flush into the floor, minimising clutter. Lida Cucina – Oak Ridge, winner of the Kitchen over 50,000 Award A bold statement is made by Pedini’s contemporary Integra kitchen, in grey oak and silver grey lacquer, with stunning curved breakfast bar.

The challenge and brief of this project were somewhat unusual, an Oak Tree that was situated on the plot is subject to a preservation order, so the whole house was designed to gently curve around it.

The kitchen had to make a statement, not just from ground level, but also from the top of the walkway that runs from the main entrance down behind it. The curved

breakfast bar creates a sociable area for informal dining and entertaining, and softens the hard lines of the rest of the kitchen.

Open oak shelves have been used as an architectural feature around the tall units, unifying both the architecture of the house and Oak Tree.

Designer Kate has used Grey Oak as it is more contemporary, and when combined with glossy Silver Grey lacquer, it reflects the natural light that floods in from outside.

Shortlist Success: London Land Interiors London Land Interiors have been shortlisted for the Bathroom award in The International Design & Architecture Awards 2015.

This elegant remodelling of an apartment in Lennox Gardens has been tailored with luxurious finishes and elegant furnishings in pale natural tones and textures; providing the basis for an uncomplicated living space.

The brief was to simplify the layout and maximise the feeling of spaciousness. The designers had to fit a generous master suite with dressing room, a smaller guest suite, a guest cloakroom, an open plan living/ dining area with small but fully equipped kitchen, and as much storage as possible, into 120sqm.

The team selected finishes that are warm, creamy and matte in accordance with the client’s wishes for a simple and honest approach. All marble finishes are honed; the rubbed down Venetian plaster in the living room is tactile and velvety; and all lacquered joinery is finished in a matte, warm white. www.londonlandinteriors.co.uk

Tell us a little about your background in design

My background has been self taught from passion, style and hands on experience over thirty years. From 13 I decided I was going to restyle and design my small bedroom using some money that was left to me by a Jamaican Great Uncle. It became a white and purple design haven, and the daisy on my logo is representative of the design that was in that room at the time. My education was based on languages and business studies, which then led into the restaurant and hotel industry which combined my love of design, business and people interaction in beautiful luxury environments. I designed and oversaw the project management of restaurants and hotel interiors and then proceeded to run them and then ventured into solely the design business.

In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense?

I think this is subjective to the culture where the design is being undertaken and cannot be answered generally. It seems that people like metropolitan luxury but on an industrial, pared down level, using natural materials and creative furniture pieces. More emphasis is finally being given to the importance of lighting, and art creativity in all areas, whether it is the wall finishes, floor coverings, etc etc.

Beach life with the elements of wood, and stone are appearing in the cities also, whilst country life is becoming more contemporary in the design look. Living in the centre of the world stage for all cultures and therefore tastes and lifestyle, I see trends from gloss and gold and shine, to natural metals, cottons and wood.

How would you describe your personal interior design style?

Name some key themes to consider when approaching design in 2015 and beyond.

My business ethos is to create homes from my clients that are personal and unique to them. My personal style doesn’t really enter into these creations, although I always create interesting backdrops as the base to the canvas and inspire them with colour combinations and layers of interesting features. Unique pieces of furniture and a big emphasis on lighting and art, and valid uses of previously empty and unused spaces. My personal design style is very eclectic, slightly bohemian and quirky but with opulent sexy fabrics, creative art and heavenly lighting – give me a log fire and candles, and panoramic window views and I am somewhere near paradise!

- To treat lighting as the integral part of the project and to make clients realise the value to the finished home.

Where does your design inspiration come from?

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to interior design schemes, what would it be?

As with all designers, our environments near and far, man made and natural are inspirational, as well as constant delving into new suppliers of all products. The moments when I am the most creative are when I am still and on my own, and my mind can wander down unexplored avenues of possibilities. A notebook and pen are always with me.

Always have a cohesive plan incorporating all elements from the beginning, get excited, get inspired, think outside the box. Make changes as the creativity flows, but never move away from the initial concept as it will always be the best! In one piece of advice‌trust your initial instincts.

- Using natural materials that create comfort, calm and bring you back to nature.

- Less cluttered environments, as people seek to de-clutter and streamline their lives - Being more creative in all finishes to bring the elements of surprise and drama into future interiors - Creation of different unexpected colour combinations that still work!

Totteridge House is an example of a dramatic modernisation of a handsome family home, undertaken by interior design practice Staffan Tollgard in collaboration with David Gibson Architects. The result is an open-plan property with intersecting living spaces that hinge on the striking sculptural staircase. Totteridge House competed at the International Design & Architecture Awards 2014 – Interior Design. Short listed in the Residential £1-2.5 Million category, the North-London-based property was an excellent contender for the Award.

Staffan Tollgard were engaged to provide a full interior design specification for this renovation of an existing family home.

With a young family, the clients wanted the interiors to reflect their fun family life and their love of design.

They wanted to make the most of space that the new house would afford them: a huge open plan living area would be used for entertaining and movie nights with the kids; a family kitchen would see regular gatherings of 10 and more. The dining room needed to seat as many as possible and be linked with the living room beyond.

Work started a year ago with the project in fully-fledged construction – a challenging time-line for all parties concerned. With the architectural design of the house under control, the clients wanted a full interior design specification comprising materials, finishes, bathrooms (including layouts, specification and finishes), lighting, joinery and all the FF&E. Utilising the space of this new house was paramount. The huge open plan living area would be used for entertaining and movie nights with the kids and the family kitchen would see regular gatherings of 10 and more.

The dining room needed to seat as many as possible and be linked with the living room beyond.

Working closely with the architect and contractor (the very accomplished Richard Sugarman of Elsworth and Bond), all parties were able to add value to the project without undoing a lot of the construction work that had already been done.

Staffan Tollgard concentrated on creating a design that tied in the architect’s focal design element, a sculptural, saw-tooth staircase with a spiral design clad in vertical timber batons. These vertical lines became one of the ‘red threads,’ the linking narrative

strands woven through the interior design.

Taking inspiration from the architect’s creation of double-height spaces in the entrance area, a lighting design was created with Moooi’s Raimond pendants taking centre stage. Visible from the first and ground floors they are functional, modern sculptures: sleek and minimal, adding to the ‘red thread’ of linear geometry that runs through the house.

Bathroom layouts were a also high priority for the young clients. Staffan Tollgard designed a beautiful master suite that created a luxurious ensuite with large format dark grey Royal Mosa tiles and specialist resin finishes. The family bathrooms also benefitted from increased storage and a bath and shower for the growing family.

The bespoke joinery was one of the most successful aspects of the project. Inspired by the clean geometry of the staircase, the London-based Staffan Tollgard designed joinery for every room in the property, including the dining room – the client’s favourite room.

The relationship between the dining room and the living room was one of the spatial planning exercises that was fully solved with a design that incorporated a bar, AV storage, the AV projector for the screen in the living room and wine storage. The depth of the joinery allowed us to deal with the change of height between the two spaces and successfully created a balanced, functional design that answered all the functional and aesthetic questions demanded of the space.

Staffan Tollgard ensured the design worked so well, Monique Tollgard added: “The design of the house started with creative, inspiring clients and a talented architect to help them make the most of the site and the existing house. The interior design benefits from an incredible envelope: a modern, openplan ground floor with connected living and entertaining spaces that gave us the opportunity to play with materials and create a landscape with surprises and delights at every turn.”

The bathroom has been designed for a British Expat’s vacation retreat in the Japanese Alps.

As a shortlisted company in the International Design & Architecture Awards 2014, Design Intervention competed with this beautiful bathroom for the Bathroom Award. The Ceremony, held at London’s prestigious Hurlingham Club in September, allowed the world’s leading designers fly in from across the globe. Design Intervention successfully claimed the Living Space – Asia Pacific Award with Cluny Park.

Baths in Japan are not simply functional: they are an indulgence. In Japan, bathing is a intrinsic part of the culture. Baths are for relaxing, not cleansing. The inclusion of a Japanese style bathroom was a key required for the vacation home.

“ An essence of Japan, with a sense of tranquility: ”

The client requested for a significant part of the floor plan to be allocated for a Japanese style bathroom that would be a place to unwind and recharge after a long day on the ski slopes. A space to relax and unwind is a key theme of this design brief with an inherent Japanese feel. With freezing mountain temperatures outside, the bathroom is designed to be warm and intimate.

The brief was to invoke an essence of Japan with a sense of tranquility: combining warmth with a true zen experience. We used a warm hued timber, with red/orange undertones to add richness to the room. A wood clad ceiling and floor injects warmth in a way that tile never could. This is not a bathroom designed merely as a functional space. Upholstered furniture, accessories and artwork give the room a soft, snug feel. It is a space for unwinding and relaxing.

Opting for a pair of tubs allows for more comfort than a single piece for two. Made of wood, which not only invokes a warmer

feel but its insulating properties maintains heated water temperature for longer. The windows are dressed with Shoji screens. The tiles are simple and inexpensive; however Design Intervention laid them to reflect traditional Japanese post and beam millwork.

The essence of Japan permeates the room with an aura of tranquility. This is a perfect place to indulge tired muscles after an intense day of skiing.

Speaking about aims and goals for the next 12-months, Nikki and Andrea added: Later this year, we plan to officially launch our Signature series of in-house furniture designs for purchase online. We have found that in this globalised world, the same, wellknown pieces are available to everyone all over the world. Whilst they may be lovely pieces, this means that it is increasing difficult to personalize our homes. At Design Intervention, we have been designing our own pieces to give a unique signature to our projects. We have put together a collection of our favourite designs, which will be available to purchase on line later this year.”

Their project ‘Heritage Estate’ has been shortlisted in the Residential £5 Million + (Project Value) category.

Heritage Estate project is located in the centre of CAD (Central Administrative District). European classical details and the Chinese traditional cultural motifs coexist in this project in

harmony. Through refining, simplifying, altering, combining and other methods, a sense of prosperity and luxury yet introverted atmosphere is created. This luxurious apartment is approximately 359 square meters with 3 bedrooms with ensuites and den. The average 3.4 meters ceiling height gives ample room for intricately designed drop ceiling which not only bring visual warmth but also richness to the space. Unique application of leather flooring is used throughout the master bedroom. The visual impact was greatly displayed by the bold application of marble in the public area such as foyer, living room and dining room. The overall approach it to find a good balance to create a harmonious East and West interior in Beijing, China. www.dcida.com

Gosling Shortlisted for the Home Cinema Award design et al are delighted to announce that Gosling have been successfully shortlisted in the International Design & Architecture Awards 2015. They will compete for the Home Cinema Award.

The inspiration for the design was to create a super yacht feel with subtle lighting, light and dark, shadows and movement that is in essence two different spaces, a family room and at the press of a button a cinema with stadium seating. The highly technical, futuristic automation enables the room to be bright and airy, with a feeling of space and grandeur. The low table sinks into the floor void and the sofas move horizontally toward the screen. From under this position, stadium seating rises up.

The lighting control has a selection of mood settings and the automated blinds and panels float seamlessly away when a new setting is required. Thirty-six motors drive the room into motion. The cinema screen measures 150 inches. A fitted screen and credenza cabinet was made in Harewood

to house the cinema screen, with inset 20 mm coining lines in nickel. A fitted credenza was made in Harewood, with seven doors on pivot hinges and lacquered interiors with nickel edging.

The stone colour of the walls accents with the grey sycamore and the polished nickel highlights the shadows. The deco rug, designed by Tim Gosling, represents the sound and radio waves of the BBC during the 1930s. Olive Design Studio shortlisted with their Britten House project Olive Design Studio have been shortlisted again for the Residential £1 – £2.5 Million (Project Value) Award in the International Design & Architecture Awards 2015, with their Britten House project.

The project is a re-configuration and refurbishment of a 2 bed, 1 bath apartment to create a timeless 2 bed, 2 bath loft apartment.

Lucy Clarke and Katie Singleton, directors of Olive Design Studio, designed the apartment to enhance the ‘loft’ feeling of space while embracing the abundance of light and striking views through the original crittal windows.

The designers were able to experiment with the use of antique mirror within the dinning area, and polished plaster in the selected areas. In order to match today’s requirements, the integrated open plan kitchen incorporates high specification appliances and state of the art technology.

The Dining Head Chair has been created as part of our Indian Royalty Ensemble. As a part of the Royal Affair Collection it is inspired by the regal ambience of the Royal Palace in Jaipur. The entire collection was developed with Real Silver Plating and Intricate Carving to represent the richness and elegance of the Indian Royal Palaces.

The Chair is worthy of being placed in any majestic setting. The idea was to allow clients to have their own “Throne” and to feel like Kings in their private palaces. The chair is completely handcrafted, and requires surgical precision of our talented artisans to plate the intricate details with real silver. Also, the upholstery has been done using Pure White Silk Fabric, which is widely used in the Royal Palace in Jaipur. The overall piece reflects the opulence, style and detailing of the Royal Palaces of India, and allows our clients to get a chance to create their own personal palaces through the use of our furniture.

The Green Fin was conceived as a sculpture from the start. The owners also desired an environmentally friendly and toxin free home for their young family and the quality of the interior environs was paramount. There would be no compromise in achieving those goals.

TOP IMAGE: Nikki B Signature Interiors Dubai-based Nikki B Signature Interiors have been successfully shortlisted for the Gulf States Living Space Award in the International Design & Architecture Awards 2015.

Emirates Hills is a new 3 bedroom residential apartment in the Financial District of Dubai, designed for a young family. The brief was to develop a scheme that covered dual tastes of traditional and more transitional neutrals and colours, using quality materials and giving a unique sense of style.

For Nikki B Signature Interiors, a key aspect of the project was working with the leathers, woods and glass combinations that were installed.

The team created a glass panel wall that would still keep privacy but would let the light through from the main windows. The sandblasting on the glass echoed the same delicate pattern on the leather panels and also detail on the wood trim.

The apartment is now light and airy, yet at night it remains cosy with separate living spaces for adults and children. One of the reasons the design works so well is because of the detail which creates many interesting features, particularly for a smaller space. www.nikkibinteriors.com

galuchat, shell mosaics, agate, leather with pressed brass edging stairs are all following another Chinoiserie’s interpretation of tracing historical referencing to the prosperous and splendor beauties of the Celadon Era, depicting a magnificent picture of the blending of eastern and western culture. AyKa Design Shortlisted for the Flooring Award AyKa Design are shortlisted for the second year running in the Flooring category of The International Product Design Awards 2015 with their entry ‘Reflections’ from the Textures Collection.

“Textures was inspired by my travels to South America during my visits to Brazil and Argentina. Having seen the most amazing landscapes and colours, I was touched first hand by their many living abstract forms and the beauty of their surroundings.

These forms inspired me to think about recreating these textures on a

rug that would eventually inspire the end user and be seen as a piece of art.”

The objective was to create a three dimensional design in a two dimensional form that would also be functional for the end user.

Waterstone, a custom home in Edwards, Colorado expresses the belief that if you build a house in the mountains, you should be able to feel the grandeur of the landscape at any time. Thus, the primary objective in the design of Waterstone was

to connect its owners to the environment and to architecture. Its design grew from the site.

A palette of stone, glass, patinated copper and weathered steel respond sculpturally to the dramatic site while withstanding the extreme conditions of a high desert environment. Contemporary slopes and curves are combined with more traditional materials to give the home warmth. More daring, battered, curved and overhanging architectural forms evoke the geology. The occupants are sheltered but also a part of the landscape. Both a functional and

structural response to the topography, the home nestles into the side of the canyon with three “pods� which interconnect by angled glass bridges that span the streams and ponds below. The arrangement of the pods and bridges prompts more communication with the land and the bridges allow more outside walls and unobstructed views; the occupants are sheltered but a part of the landscape. www.rkdarch.com

the restoration and upgrading of the property is an ultimate success.

The Gritti Palace is renowned and revered as one of the finest hotels in Venice. As part of the of the Luxury Collection Hotel – Starwood Hotels & Resorts, the historic hotel recently added 10 special themed suites, a roof top terrace, cooking school and spa.

Featuring interior design by Chuck Chewning and architecture from Gretchen Alexander Harnischfeger, the rennovation validates and recognizes the integrity of exceptional design.

The design direction was to restore and improve this iconic property without losing the existing atmosphere. The key count was reduced to create 5-fixture bathrooms and to add a variety of suites. All new MEP systems, state of the art waterproofing system of the foundations to prevent aqua alta, hi tech and BOH upgrades to modernise a 500-year old building.

The interiors respect the illustrious history of the Gritti and the city of Venice. They pay tribute to the numerous famous patrons and celebrities that continue to frequent the hotel.

A new roof top terrace commands panoramic views of Venice while a new Spa is operated

by Aqua di Parma. All FF&E was designed custom for the Gritti and produced in the Veneto by Italian craftsmen. The historic Gritti Cooking School was also revived.

Without losing the romance and ambience of the old Gritti for which is world renowned,

This was a very special and exceptional project that was immensely complex.

Working in Venice and respecting the historic fabric of a 500-year old building provided an extreme challenge, however , the result is a hotel that has truly been brought into the 21st century.

The Gritti Palace is where history and culture meet with renewed Venetian style. A place of exceptional art and elegance, reassuringly intimate with a homely feel. The Gritti Palace is where multiple generations of elite global influencers gather to socialise, draw inspiration, and celebrate. The reference point for the world’s elite at international city events such as the Biennale of Contemporary Art and the Venice Film Festival.

The Design Practice by UBER is one of the UK’s foremost interior design agencies. It specialises in high-end residential interior architecture and design and has won multiple international awards since it’s inception in 2009. It’s projects range from international grand residencies to local room make-overs. UBER are not only an acclaimed Interior Design Practice, but a collective group of companies offering an unrivalled suite of design services. The Design Practice has an insight into the hot collections of the interiors industry; they know how to add value, giving a competitive – as well as aesthetic – edge.

Once the team had softened the bar area with tactile materials such as cowhide ‘s’ shaped benches and wallpaper, the ambiance called for some dramatic feature lights (as well as task spots) to allure the eye between the spaces and link the two, without being a complete distraction from the open cinema.

The Design Practice by UBER have been winners every year at the International Design & Architecture Awards since the awards began in 2010. Director Jim Evans comments, “these highly prestigious awards are a phenomenal way of recognising and promoting talented young companies alongside much respected and established peers.”

The home automation specialist set about installing a discrete state-of-the-art system, with 7.2 surround and equalisers, that delivers optimal sound quality according to where the clients sit in the room. The projector was upgraded to a 3D 1-chip HD projector which is future-proofed to progress up to full 3D as and when the client chooses.

The design brief for this project was to update and unite an underused bar and cinema space, converting it into an envious, moody club feel with the latest discrete technology.

Jim explains, “the young client had installed a cinema system as an early adopter in the very early days but they recognised that not only had the technology and audio moved on considerably, but the interface was so complex and un-user friendly, they had lost the will to bother with it.”

The lady of the house also found the room too dark, plain and uninspiring with a separate bar area that was underused due to lack of an inviting atmosphere. More lighting was requested but not at the cost of altering the darker mood. Rather than a complete overhaul, the team were to retain as many elements as possible to cohesively bring the spaces together, allowing the bar to overspill into the cinema and vice versa.

There was a redesign of the cinema area to incorporate the hidden speaker and systems, all finished in a wonderful crushed velvet, that refracts the colours from the projected movie, and completed with hand finished metal wall lights and a lush black wool carpet.

Of the system itself Jim remarks, “it is as neat as it is impressive.” As well as the concealed speakers, the system units were built into a wall cavity and hidden from view behind a wall panel. The redesign of the adjoining bar space, incorporating new task lighting and feature drop lights, allows the eye to be intrigued with the space beyond from either side. The use of similar textures and materials throughout allows the look to flow through to the cinema incorporating individual reclined double seating, cinemastyle in two rows of three. The team also addressed the all-important interface, which is now driven from an iPad that the whole family uses effortlessly.

The result is something of a transformation.

Jim remarks, “the clients and their friends have been blown away - almost literally by the quality and power of the system.

They are also delighted by its ease of use, and revel with their guests in the stunning look and feel of the room. Actually, make that ‘auditorium’.
