FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT By Tom Schmitz, MRPA President

Hello members, associates and friends: Wow, I can’t believe 2019 is more than a quarter over! It seems to me, that time is moving way too fast. I recommend, regularly, we all slow down a bit to smell the roses, enjoy the sunrise/sunset and get out of the office to experience some of the joy we bring to our communities. Work – life balance is more important than ever. It is a true honor to act as your president in 2019. I have enormous shoes to try filling, as Past President Boe Carlson led us stupendously in 2018. Thank you Boe. Also, I know 2020 will be fantastically led by our President-Elect Chris Esser. I sincerely thank all past, present and future board members for their engaged commitment to our association,

profession, industry and communities. I highly recommend all members consider joining our board at some time in the future. Additionally, we are extremely fortunate to have an outstanding staff, without whom, none of our great work would come to fruition. I offer a huge congratulation to all the 2018 MRPA award recipients! Also, I thank and commend all the nominators who took time and energy to prepare nomination packets and submit. This edition of our association journal has an excellent article on the importance and successes of internships and practicums. If your agency doesn’t already have a program like this, I highly recommend you work to establish one. Mentoring new practitioners into our profession is super important now, given the massive wave of baby-boomer retirements already in progress. We all have a role to play in the recruiting, training and supporting of these new additions to our workforce. Down south here in New Ulm, I can’t believe how fast our record snowfall has disappeared. Just before spending the third week of March with my wife and friends on the beaches of Naples, Florida (conducting some recreational research – ha!) we had mountains of snow. Upon our return, they were all but gone. Now, many of us are on flood watch. Seasonal change is one reason I love Minnesota. Enjoy the article embracing our winter wonderland.

We take a unique approach to every design

Another article discusses local sales tax referendums and how they fund bettering our communities through new and improved recreational amenities. I know Elk River just had a great success instituting theirs and is now moving forward with awesome improvements. I was a volunteer member of the New Ulm Parks and Recreation Commission in the late 1990s when we instituted our first local sales tax to build our civic center, triple our community center and more. Now, as a staff member, I get to help with round two, building more community and regional assets, including significant additions to our recreation center.

Design with community in mind stantec.com/parks-recreation

Also, read the NRPA Park Metrics article on page 42. It’s a great way to quantify, describe and promote the value of our parks and recreation systems. The MRPA Board encourages all agencies to review this program and consider adding to NRPA Park Metrics to build Minnesota’s contribution.

Minnesota Recreation & Park Foundation Update By John W. Stutzman, CPRP, MRPF President

In today’s world it is easy to become overly focused on the “next big thing” and lose sight of organizational priorities. The MRPF Board of Trustees remains committed to our members, which we view as our organization’s foundation. We are constantly exploring ways to serve you and showcase the value of an MRPF membership. Our efforts include innovative techniques intended to engage the future of our profession, the student and young professional members. Inspiring this demographic, and all professionals, to be active Foundation members can help increase our membership. However, more importantly the initiatives, listed at right, are membership opportunities designed to provide benefits of professional development and the construction of a strong professional network. By providing these experiences we hope our membership finds value and will develop your own professional experiences, networks, and relationships. If there are areas of the recreation profession you value and would like to see MRPF become more involved, offer new opportunities, or ways to better serve our membership, please contact me at jstutzman@ goldenvalleymn.gov.

MRPF Student Scholarship Recipient: Where Are They Now? Dr. Lana (Rubin) Huberty, 1991 Recipient At first glance, it may appear that an associate professor of kinesiology and sports management at Concordia University fits more into the category of “related field” than the parks and recreation profession. Appearances can be deceiving! Dr. Lana Huberty remains as strong of an advocate for parks and recreation as she was three decades ago when she first began the study of recreation, parks and leisure services (RPLS) at Mankato State University (MSU). After finding the RPLS program at MSU, Lana promptly changed from a business management major who couldn’t sit still in class to an RPLS major who loved her classes, studies, and professors. She learned about the MRPF student scholarship, MRPA, and the benefits associated with being involved. After graduation, Lana continued to gain new experiences, or more precisely anywhere which worked with her family schedule. Lana’s early professional opportunities included multiple positions with the YMCA, City of Elk River, and a move to Milwaukee. Over the years, her career path shifted away from traditional recreation opportunities. During this time she completed a master’s degree in sports and recreation management from St. Cloud State University (SCSU) and served as a graduate assistant while obtaining her PhD in kinesiology with an emphasis in sports management at the University of Minnesota. With Lana’s recreation journey navigating her into academia, she feared this new direction might affect relationships with past professors who meant so much to her. These fears were extremely unwarranted as even today Dr. Joy Joyner (MSU) and Mark Moore (SCSU) continue to make sure Lana knows how proud they are of her. As a full-time educator, Lana remains passionate about the recreation field and holds a firm belief that recreation serves as a strong influences on who people become. She remains personally connected to the profession through her part-time work at the YMCA. Her professional connections are exemplified through the education of her sports management students, one of whom has a summer internship with Bloomington Parks and Recreation, showcasing the correlation between career paths in both athletics and parks and recreation.

Adult Mental Health First Aid will be held on May 7 at the Eagan Community Center and is limited to the first 30 participants. This will be an eighthour class that introduces participants to the risk factors and warning signs of common mental illnesses and substance use disorders, builds understanding of their impact, and reviews common support options.

Certified Playground Safety Inspector Course and Exam May 8-10, 2019 The first Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI) program was held March 13-15 at the New Brighton Community Center and had more than 70 participants. This second course will be held May 8-10 at the Roseville Skating Center. This course can only accept 40 participants and is currently full. The CPSI course is the most comprehensive training program on playground hazard identification and risk management methods that is offered today. Advance reading and 15 hours of training prepares attendees to take the CPSI exam.

< Meet Chris Morrow Chris Morrow grew up in Blue Springs, Missouri, just outside of Kansas City. “My dad was the athletic trainer for the Kansas City Royals and later worked at my local high school when he got out of the big leagues,” states Morrow. “With my dad’s job, I grew up around baseball, but I also tried every sport I could. Recreation always played a big role in my life: I played both recreation and traveling soccer, baseball, basketball, and tennis. I was also in taekwondo until I got my second degree black belt. I was in choir, school plays/ musicals, and Boy Scouts until my early 20s getting the Eagle Scout award when I was 16.” When Morrow got to high school, he decided he wanted to be a weatherman. During those four years, he took every math and science class he could until he attended St. Cloud State University to pursue a meteorology degree. “My sophomore year I decided that was not the career for me, so I looked into physical education,” he states. “Since I had always had a passion for sports, I thought this could be a good career path. During my first class it was clear to me that I loved being around sports, but I wanted to be around other people that liked sports as much as I did. As a PE teacher, most of the effort was spent on the kids that did not want to be there. I switched my major to recreation and sports management and never looked back.” During college, Morrow joined the campus recreation team at SCSU as a volleyball and soccer referee. “My sophomore year I was hired as a program assistant (PA) and was in charge of doing all of the league schedules,” says Morrow. “I was a PA for three years working with all the sports offerings, as well the building manager at Hollenbeck Hall. I ended my senior year as the campus recreation employee of the year, and started in parks and recreation with an internship at Maple Grove during the summer of 2014.” Morrow was hired as a part-time building supervisor in Maple Grove after his internship, as well as a Zamboni driver at the Coon Rapids Ice Arena, and claims he had never driven a Zamboni before this. “After a year, I got the opportunity to fill in for the sports programmer in Maple Grove while she was on maternity leave. A spot then opened up after that as a full-time recreation clerk. I was able to learn all of the ins and outs of the department, as well as being in charge of the community center memberships. After two years, I moved into my current position as the athletics program specialist, the same position I had filled in for.” Morrow’s first involvement with MRPA was going to an Athletic Management Group meeting in 2017. He says it was a great first encounter with MRPA because it was a room full of people just like him. “We talked sports and leagues and refs and everything that my new job entailed,” he adds. “I was lucky to be able to go to the 2017 MRPA conference in Brainerd. I went from knowing just the people in my office to more than 40 people across the state in my profession. It’s great to be able to talk and get advice from likeminded people that may have had or are having the same struggles as I am in my career.” Morrow has accepted the chair position of the MRPA Athletic Management Group. He has also started working with the interns in Maple Grove. He adds, “I hope to keep growing in my job and start to give back to students looking into starting this career. The more I have been involved in MRPA, the more doors that have opened for opportunity and growth.” MRPA members are the heart of our organization. They are involved and committed to advancing the parks and recreation programming. MRPA in Action is a new magazine feature which will highlight one section/committee and one professional per issue.

KEEPING UP Dan Klinkhammer Retires After 28 Years with Minnesota Youth Athletic Services If you played youth sports or had children that participated in youth sports in Minnesota over the past 28 years, there is a good chance you played in an event or program created by Dan Klinkhammer, the executive director of the Minnesota Youth Athletic Services (MYAS), who retired on March 29. Klinkhammer grew up in rural Wisconsin with three brothers and two sisters. He filled his summer days on the baseball diamond, fall evenings on the football field and winter nights on the basketball court when he wasn’t working long hours in his father’s cheese factory. A four-year letter winner, and captain of the Bloomington High School (WI) baseball, football and basketball teams, sports came naturally to him and he knew it was his calling.

After returning from a tour in Vietnam and graduating from Winona State University, he accepted a position in Pipestone, Minn. as the park and recreation director in the late 1970s. Klinkhammer then returned to Winona when offered a job working under Bob Welch, who would become his mentor. Klinkhammer eventually assumed the duties of director and held that position for the next 10 years. He was chosen as Man of the Year in 1989. During his tenure in Winona, he managed to convince his childhood sweetheart, Karla, to accept his proposal of marriage. Their family grew with the birth of son Adam in 1982, followed by Lance in 1985. Klinkhammer moved his family to Ham Lake in 1989, working briefly for the Minnesota Sports Federation, and a short time later went on to co-found the MYAS with Reg Powell as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based on an educational foundation. In the early 90s, the local youth sports scene was searching for a neutral organization that could provide the service required for proper league administration. The MYAS was created in an effort to fill that need. Two of the first programs administered by the MYAS were the Girls

Metro Basketball League (GMBL) and the Boys Traveling Basketball League (BTBL). The business model created by Klinkhammer and employed by the MYAS is a true profit-sharing model. Every event administered by the MYAS is hosted by a local youth sports organization, which becomes the beneficiary of a significant amount of the event’s revenue. The MYAS philosophy focuses on helping local organizations raise more money for their programs. Despite the trials over the years that forced Klinkhammer to navigate some difficult waters while finding creative ways to run the organization, his philosophy has never swayed. “Do the right things for the right reasons and treat people the way you want to be treated.” Staying true to that moral code has allowed Klinkhammer and his staff to make an impact on the lives of millions of Minnesotans over the past 28 years and create positive experiences that they carry throughout their adult lives. The culture of youth sports in Minnesota would be very different had Klinkhammer not made the decision to create the MYAS and surround himself with smart, capable, and entrepreneurial employees.

Clifton E. French Award Recipient:

Jon Oyanagi

Clifton E. French Distinguished Service Award recipient Jon Oyanagi and family (left to right): Brett Oyanagi, Jack Oyanagi, Becky Oyanagi, Jon Oyanagi, Beckett Crain, Harper Crain, Jamie Crain, Lena Oyanagi, Ben Oyanagi.

The Clifton E. French Distinguished Service Award recipient for 2018 was Jon Oyanagi, retired director of Ramsey County Parks and Recreation. This award is the highest distinction presented to a person who has provided long and outstanding service to MRPA and the parks and recreation profession. After graduating from the University of Minnesota, the first seven years of his career were in therapeutic recreation positions based in adult mental health settings. “I made the switch to municipal recreation in St. Peter as their first director of recreation and leisure services,” says Oyanagi. “Once a Southern-Minnie guy, always a SMRPA guy. Pros like Leo Rudolph, Bob Burke, and Denny Maschka took me under their wings and taught me so much. Next came the then fast growing suburb of Eagan as a recreation programmer. Fun times with the South of the River Recreators! From there it was on to Anoka County and the natural resourcebased system where I was the operations manager.” Shifting gears I went to the big city as a district manager for the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board,” says Oyanagi. “Paul Hokeness and Eileen Kilpatrick were the

other two district managers. The three of us couldn’t have been any more different but I have never had as much fun on the job as I did working with them. Brooklyn Park was my next stop as their director of recreation and parks. Jan Ficken and Mary Pat Black were such a joy to have as leaders on our amazing team. Finally, I was privileged to finish my career in Ramsey County (where I grew up) and have recently retired. Ramsey County is such an amazing organization and community.” Oyanagi explains that Dennis Palm, the original director for Brooklyn Park Recreation and Parks, told him that success in this field is all about relationships. “Through MRPA I have enjoyed so many wonderful professional and personal relationships,” adds Oyanagi. “There is no other profession as supportive of each other’s work and lives. As I retire, I will definitely try to cling to these relationships and memories as my life moves forward. My career is defined by all of the great people I have met along the way. And they all love to play.” Oyanagi served on the Board of Directors for three years and was the Board president in 2010. Also in 2010, he received the MRPA special award. Earlier in his career, he

received the MRPA meritorious award in 1995 and the recognition of service from the Recreational Sports Commission in 1996. He was inducted into the Minnesota USSSA Hall of Fame in 2011. Oyanagi’s involvement with MRPA goes back 40 years to when he was a student member. “Professionals such as Marty Jessen and Clif French were so welcoming and supportive,” he says. “I was active in the student section followed by the therapeutic recreation section. Then everything becomes a blur but I do remember being on committees like membership, awards, recreational sports, programming, and several conference committees. I was honored to serve as the MRPA Board president in 2010. That same year, Jennifer Ringold and I co-chaired the Local Host Committee for the NRPA Congress held in Minneapolis.” Congratulations to Jon Oyanagi for receiving this distinguished award, and for all his years of service to MRPA and the parks and recreation profession.

Minnesota’s parks and recreation agencies have a variety of indoor and outdoor facilities that can host meetings and events of all sizes. These facilities are diverse in design and function, and offer spaces for corporate functions, conferences, board meetings, small and large group outings, and more. Your Next Event Can be a Walk in the Park

How to Use This Guide

When it comes to setting the tone for an event, prairies, lakes, woodlands and gardens provide idyllic picture-postcard backdrops for events that the typical hotel conference room or convention center cannot match.

We’ve prepared this MRPA Recreation and Parks Facilities Guide as a tool for organizations who plan and host conferences, meetings and special events. MRPA member rental facilities are highlighted on the pages that follow. The guide showcases facility amenities, capacities, catering details, and rental fees – please feel free to share it with anyone who may be in the need of a unique venue for their next upcoming event.

“Company picnics are great and we host a lot of them, but many event planners don’t realize that we also host a number of corporate meetings and banquets,” said Strehler.” Minnesota Recreation and Park Association (MRPA) member communities also have hundreds of indoor meeting spaces to accomodate groups of 12 to 1,200 people. Spaces range from community recreation centers and golf course clubhouses, to freestanding park pavilions, shelters, and historical venues.

Please note: this is just a small cross section of the many Minnesota facilities available to rent. Contact your local city, county or state parks and recreation office to discuss customized options and pricing for your events.

One-of-a-Kind Venues Have you considered holding your next conference in a historic barn or on a turf field? Many Minnesota communities have reinvented farm and athletic sites to host events and conferences. Earle Brown Heritage Center in Brooklyn Center has been hosting events since 1990. Association manager, Darlyne Erickson of Sapphyre Group, has held numerous meetings and events there. “I’ve held several meetings at Earle Brown over the years with association clients, said Erickson. Repurposing this space in an area of the city that you wouldn’t normally find an event center makes meetings interesting.” St. Louis Park’s new ROC (Recreation Outdoor Center) is a mixed use, covered outdoor space with an adaptable floor based on the time of year – ice in winter, artificial turf in spring, and concrete in the summer and fall. The space is perfectly suited for expos, weddings, banquets, concerts and sporting competitions.

Bored of retreats? Turn boring board retreats into paddleboard retreats!

board meetings available

Community parks have a big advantage over traditional event venues. In addition to meeting spaces, event planners can tailor an outdoor activity for your group. Three Rivers Park District offers ways to get creative with meeting planning. “Board meetings don’t have to be in a board room. How about renting stand-up paddle boards?” asked Jenn Strehler, guest services & events manager for Three Rivers. Need a team-building experience? Rent the Oakwood Room at French Regional Park for your corporate strategy session, then head down to the water for a group kayak lesson. Or, rent the Basset Creek Room at Brookview Golf Course and plan a lawn bowling tournament.

From below-zero temperatures to record snowfall in February, 2019 will be a winter to remember. The temperature at the outdoor rink next to Lake Bemidji was 26 degrees below-zero during Hockey Day 2019 on January 19. And roads in southern Minnesota remained closed February 25, after a blizzard struck over the weekend. Minnesotans still were able to get outside and enjoy the winter, despite the frigid temperatures and mountains of snow. Here are a few winter photos from MRPA member agencies.

The Importance of Internships By Bethani Gerhard, Minnesota Recreation and Park Association

A parks and recreation internship is more than a way to just gain work experience. It is a way to network and make connections with other professionals in the field. Internships also provide a comprehensive experience and an opportunity to learn through day-to-day situations. Historically, internships were unpaid as a requirement for a degree program. That is still the case for some parks and recreation agencies that offer internships, but not all. Some agencies offer a wage comparable with seasonal employment. Internships also can be an entry-level position for recent graduates, according to a job-hunting platform for college student and recent graduates called WayUp. Both the number of unpaid and paid internships is growing across all industries - roughly 70-percent of internships are part-time and 60-percent are unpaid. MRPA has assisted 11 agencies with sending out internship openings in the past few months. And there have been about 15 seasonal postings sent through MRPA. Seasonal positions can vary by the parks and recreation agency, but are typically have more specific duties during the summer months such as a park naturalist, camp counselor or building coordinator.

Many parks and recreation departments hire an intern for the summer months, typically for 12 weeks. These internships focus on helping the parks and recreation department during the busy summer season with administration, supervision, and leadership of activities, programs, and community events. Usually the minimum requirement to be considered a candidate is the individual should be enrolled in college with course work in recreation or a related field. Other agencies require that applicants are at least a junior in park and recreation studies and have completed the necessary requirements with their respective college or university. Once an intern is hired, they should use every opportunity to learn about the field of parks and recreation in order to gain leadership skills. There are 10 important things for all young professionals, reprinted with permission from the January 2016 issue of the Parks & Recreation ©2016 by the National Recreation and Park Association: • Find things that you love and are passionate about. Learn to incorporate them into your position and share your story. Let your passion lead the way and you will never work a day of your life.

your department and the profession. It is extremely important to stay in touch and have consistent communication! • Take advantage of volunteer, scholarship, fellowship, certification and award opportunities. There are so many available through NRPA and state associations. • Step out of your comfort zone by networking with other professionals that don’t look like you or come from the same demographic or professional backgrounds. • Be a constant learner. Seek educational and professional development opportunities to assist with your growth. In addition, the NRPA schools will further develop your professional pursuits, knowledge and networks. • Surround yourself with positive individuals and avoid the watercooler. • Think and dream BIG! • Work hard and share your passion with your community. • Stay focused, determined and driven through it all. • “Be the change that you want to see!”

Internships Help Students Gain Experience in New Ulm By Cheryl Kormann, City of New Ulm

Internships are a very effective way for college students to gain work experience before graduation. Internships can even turn into fulltime jobs or open doors for other opportunities. The City of New Ulm has a large park and recreation department, one of the largest per capita in spending in the state. We maintain and operate three large facilities: civic center (two indoor ice rinks/dry floor space and more); community center, which houses a senior center, meeting and auditorium spaces for evening and weekend rentals and a recreation center that houses Vogel Fieldhouse (three indoor multiuse gyms and track), fitness spaces, racquetball courts and an indoor swimming pool. We also manage over 40 park units ranging from large nature areas on rivers to small neighborhood parks to athletic complexes hosting leagues and tournaments to miles of trails for family and fitness to historical sites downtown.

Only 25 miles to the east of the City of New Ulm is Minnesota State University, Mankato (MSU), which offers a recreation, parks and leisure services (RPLS) major with one or more of the three major tracks: resource management, leisure planning and management, and therapeutic recreation. It is the only nationally accredited undergraduate RPLS program in the state.

our department appealing in terms of options. Students often begin their careers working as either a part-time or seasonal employee. From there, they often fall in love with the line of work, which results in their pursuit of a degree in RPLS or teaching.

The City of New Ulm has worked with MSU’s professors in placing interns in areas such as programming, aquatics, facility operations and parks maintenance to gain experience in these areas. Students from MSU can apply for internships with the City of New Ulm and request certain or multiple areas they are hoping to gain experience; programming, aquatics, facility and park operations and maintenance, ice arena management, etc. Our parks and recreation department is large in terms of what we offer, but relatively small in staff. In fact, our staff members wear multiple hats, making

Our department has a good and close working relationship with the faculty at MSU. Kristi Montandon, Ph.D., assistant professor works with students to gauge interest and match those with parks and recreation agencies. Close proximity of New Ulm to MSU, coupled with our diverse offerings and opportunities, makes our agency a good fit for internship opportunities. Interns are able to easily commute to New Ulm, eliminating the need to find additional housing and MSU faculty are able to make timely site visits and meet with staff. For more information about the internships that the City of New Ulm parks and recreation department offers, contact Cheryl Kormann at cherylk@ newulmmn.gov
