Keep Your Summer Entertaining Simple and Fun

5 expert ways to make the most of seasonal gatherings

From summer holidays and pool parties to spontaneous backyard barbecues with friends and neighbors, the hottest season of the year brings people together. When it’s your turn to host, make the most of the occasion by setting up your space to maximize the fun while showing off your festive side.

“Summer is hands down my favorite time to host,” said Kristina Zias, lifestyle, beauty and fashion expert and mom. “I love any excuse to bring people together and – let’s be real – I’m always looking for a reason to throw a party. The key is keeping things low stress for the host and making sure guests feel comfortable the second they walk in.”

This season, Zias and Glade are teaming up to share some of her favorite summer entertaining tips, which are simple, low-effort ways to make every gathering feel special. Whether you’re planning a full-blown backyard bash or hosting a few friends for drinks, Zias’ go-to ideas are all about setting the mood and enjoying the moment.

1. Set the Scene Without the Stress

To achieve a beautiful scene and make cleanup a breeze, try using disposable plates, utensils, napkins and cups in red, white and blue. A self-serve drink station with strawberry-infused water and a table of colorful fruit skewers adds charm without requiring much prep.

2. Tap Into Nostalgia Through Scent

Scent can instantly transport guests back to cherished summer memories, making it a powerful way to set the tone and spark conversation. Zias suggests using home fragrances to do just that. The new Glade Americana collection, available exclusively in stores and online at Walmart, features three limited-edition scents inspired by nostalgic summer traditions like beach trips, ice pops and gardenfresh fruit. Masterfully crafted to help bring summer to every room of your home, they’re designed to evoke warm-weather traditions.

• Berries & Cream: Scents of a classic American summer treat spring to life in a picnic-perfect blend of apple, red berries, apricot, vanilla and sweet cream.

• Summer Pops: Reminisce on childhood memories of a cool ice pop on a warm summer day with bright notes of Brazilian orange, pineapple, strawberry, white peach and sandalwood.

• Beach Life: Transport yourself to a favorite summer vacation spot by the ocean with a breezy mix of sea salt, driftwood, white moss and white peony.

“These seasonal scents can help you evoke nostalgic memories and bring that summer energy into any room of your home,” Zias said. “They make everything feel a little more special and, honestly,

they just make me happy.”

3. Keep It Simple and Guest-Friendly

Part of summer’s appeal is its easygoing vibe, so there’s no need to overdo it with complicated snacks or overwhelming decor. Lean into the simplicity of the season with ready-to-serve bites that can please guests of all ages, like berries, sliced or cubed watermelon, meat and cheese trays, sliders or chips and light dips. A separate kids station with games and snacks can keep little ones entertained.

4. Create Comfortable Hangout Spots

The hot summer sun and cool indoor air means guests will likely filter in and out of the house, so help them feel welcome and comfortable wherever they may be. Consider flexible seating guests can move around on the patio or in the yard, like bag chairs or foldable lawn

chairs. Complement your festive indoor drink station with beverage-filled coolers to keep guests refreshed and designate an area for essentials like sunscreen and bug spray.

5. Have a Backup Plan

The best-laid plans can go awry when summer storms pop up. Before inviting the entire town for a barbecue, make sure you have enough indoor space and seating in case of rain or extreme heat. For grilling plans, Zias recommends prepping an alternate cooking method to avoid last-minute stress. A little backup planning can help keep the good vibes going, rain or shine.

Are You Planning to Transfer Your Business to Your Children?

A common question we receive from clients who own a business is how should they pass the business to their children. The short answer is that there are numerous methods for transferring a business. Below is a brief discussion of the most common methods and some of the practical considerations.

Gift it to them now. You could gift all or a portion of the business to them now. Depending on the value of the interest you gift, you may have to file a gift tax return to let the federal government know about the gift and obtain an (expensive) appraisal in order to value the gift. While there are probably some circumstances where this method makes sense, in many instances, there are not a lot of advantages to a direct gift now.

Sell the business to them (now or over a period of time). If your children are already involved in your business, selling all or a portion of it to them can be advantageous. It gives them more “skin in the game,” gives you more liquid assets to support yourself in your later years, simplifies your estate plan, and can be set up in a variety of ways that provide tax advantages. If your child cannot afford a full purchase, they may borrow money from a lender or execute a promissory note with you in order to make the purchase; however, if you’re not ready to relinquish full control, another option might be better.

Transfer your ownership in the business to a Revocable Trust. Transferring your ownership interest to your revocable living trust can have many advantages. First, it removes the asset from the probate process so that, immediately upon your death, the successor trustee of your trust simply takes possession and transfers the ownership interest to your child (according to the terms of your trust). Second, current tax laws generally provide that transferring property at your death allows the beneficiary to receive an

adjusted basis, typically a step-up in basis, thereby, reducing potential capital gains taxes if the business is subsequently sold. Third, if you lose your mental capacity while you retain ownership, your successor trustee can simply step in and easily act on behalf of your trust.

Family Limited Partnership. If the value of the business, combined with your other assets, is likely to place your estate above the federal estate tax exemption amount, you may want to establish a family limited partnership (in conjunction with a revocable living trust) to hold the business and other assets. This method has advantages, including additional asset protection and reduction of your estate value for tax purposes, but it is more complex and expensive and is not necessary for most.

Transfer via Will. If there will not be an urgent need to access your business operating (financial) accounts in the first 2-3 months after your death and your family has sufficient funds to probate your Will, then letting your business pass through your Will is a simple option. As noted above, when property transfers upon your death, your children should receive an adjusted basis in the asset.

Do nothing. When it comes to a business asset, doing nothing is never the best option. It can leave a mess for your loved ones at your death, require them to spend more time and money to resolve, and often causes more damage to family relationships. I highly encourage you to think through your goals, talk to your children, and consult your legal and tax advisors to come up with the best plan for you.

Effective Ways to Support Veterans Year-Round

For the approximately 18 million veterans in the United States – roughly 6% of U.S. adults ages 18 and older, according to the U.S. Census Bureau – the return to civilian life can present challenges.

Because many veterans need assistance as a result of their military service, consider these impactful and meaningful ways to support veterans and ensure their sacrifices are honored and needs are met.

Engage in Community Outreach Programs

By participating in community events, you can help bridge the gap between veterans and civilians, fostering a sense of understanding and appreciation. Events such as parades, public ceremonies and educational forums can be organized to highlight the contributions of veterans. Additionally, volunteer opportunities within your community can also provide support to veterans, such as helping with home repairs, providing transportation to medical appointments or simply spending time with veterans who may feel isolated.

Provide Employment and Career Support

Gaining employment is an issue for many veterans transitioning back to civilian life. To help ease the transition, community members can support veterans by offering resume writing workshops, interview coaching and career fairs specifically

targeted at veterans. Employers can also actively seek and hire veterans to leverage their unique skills and experiences. Veteran-friendly hiring practices and mentorship programs can also be beneficial toward ensuring veterans find the financial stability and purpose they need to thrive.

Contribute to Veteran-Focused Charities

Donating to veteran-focused charities can help provide essential services such as housing, health care and educational assistance. In addition to monetary donations, consider volunteering your time or skills. Many charities need volunteers to help with various tasks, from organizing events to providing administrative support.

Advocate for Veteran Health Care Initiatives

Many veterans require specialized medical care due to their

service. Advocating for better health care policies and initiatives can help ensure they receive quality care. This includes supporting legislation that improves access to medical and mental health services for veterans. You can also work with local health care providers to develop programs specifically designed for veterans.

Promote Mental Health Awareness and Resources

Mental health is a critical aspect of overall well-being, and many veterans face unique mental health challenges, including posttraumatic stress disorder and depression. Promoting mental health awareness and providing resources can help veterans cope with these issues. This includes organizing mental health awareness campaigns, providing information on available resources and reducing the stigma associated with seeking help.

From Prayer to Purpose: The Skero’s Furniture Story

Since 2002, Skero’s Furniture has been more than a store—it’s been a reflection of one family’s faith-filled journey and a gift to the communities of Kingwood, Atascocita, and Crosby. Born from a powerful moment of personal transformation, Skero’s continues to serve families with integrity, hospitality, and heart, offering name-brand furniture and a welcoming environment where everyone is treated like family.

The story of Skero’s Furniture begins not with a showroom or a business plan, but with a man at a crossroads. In April 2000, Daron Skero was facing a life that had veered off course. His relationships were strained, his path uncertain, and with his first child on the way, he knew something had to change. One evening, with the weight of his past heavy on his heart, Daron turned to God in prayer. That single moment of surrender would change everything. He found forgiveness, peace, and a renewed purpose—one built on faith, honesty, and the kind of integrity that would soon define his business.

In March 2002, Daron launched Kingwood Furniture and Consignment with his parents. By 2007, he and his wife Jill took full ownership, rebranding it as Skero’s Furniture and Mattress Center, setting the stage for continued growth.

Today, Skero’s Furniture is a thriving family-owned business with three community-rooted locations. Known for friendly service, affordable pricing, and an exceptional product line, the business has become a staple for families seeking comfort, quality, and a company that cares. Whether you’re looking for a stylish sofa, a new dining table, or the perfect mattress, Skero’s carries over 38 trusted name brands and offers furniture for every style, budget, and family need.

But what truly sets Skero’s apart isn’t just their product—it’s their people.

From the moment you walk through the door, you’re greeted by staff who are genuinely happy to help. Many of them are longtime team members who share Daron’s vision and values. They’re not just selling furniture—they’re helping families build spaces where love, laughter, and memories live. That sense of home is present in every interaction, whether you’re visiting the Kingwood location, shopping in Crosby, or exploring the one-of-a-kind Locker in Atascocita.

From its earliest days, Skero’s Furniture has operated on one guiding principle: the Golden Rule. As found in Matthew 7:12, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” This simple truth is the heartbeat of the business and influences every decision— from pricing and customer care to vendor relationships and team development. Daron calls it living for an “audience of One,” always striving to honor God first and foremost in his business.

Daron often says, “At Skero’s, we treat everyone like family, guided by faith and integrity.” That’s not just a motto—it’s a promise lived out in every showroom, every conversation, and every delivery.

So, if you’re looking to furnish your home with pieces that are as meaningful as they are beautiful, we invite you to visit Skero’s Furniture. Come see the heart behind the furniture. Come meet the people who believe your home should be your sanctuary. And come experience what happens when faith meets family and community becomes the true foundation.

Big Upgrades for Small Spaces

Renovate your bathroom for style and function

Home renovations happen for a variety of reasons – whether to reflect personal style preferences, replace worn out materials or adapt to a family’s evolving functional needs. Among the most popular upgrades homeowners tackle, bathroom renovations can be a smart and worthwhile investment.

Updating a bathroom, even a small one, requires careful planning to ensure both aesthetic appeal and long-term functionality. To maximize the value of your investment, focus on a design that is timeless and products that offer a blend of beauty, comfort and performance.

“As a designer and renovator, I know firsthand the impact fixtures can have on a home,” said Keith Bynum, home renovation expert, designer and HGTV star. “American Standard has been my go-to for renovation projects because their products are built to last, beautiful and timeless. The brand’s approach aligns with my own – creating stylish, convenient spaces with high-quality products that cater to real-life needs and improve the way we live.”

Discover these expert tips for selecting the perfect products for your bathroom upgrade from American Standard, a trusted leader in bathroom and kitchen plumbing fixtures that is celebrating 150 years of designing innovative products that are truly “built for life.”

Sinks

Your sink should not only enhance the visual appeal of your bathroom but also meet your practical, everyday needs. Striking the right balance between aesthetics and practicality is essential when choosing the perfect sink for your space. If you’ve never shopped for a sink before, you may not realize how many styles there are to choose from.

An undermount sink sits with its edge below the level of the countertop, creating a seamless surface that makes it easier to clean while hiding from view. A drop-in sink is placed into an opening with the rim creating a lip that forms a barrier between your sink and counter. A vessel sink resembles a standalone basin, often used as a decorative and contemporary alternative to traditional sinks in powder rooms. The sleek and clean design of a pedestal sink makes it a perfect solution for smaller spaces, although additional storage may be needed.

Once you decide on the sink, you’ll also need to determine what furniture to pair with it. Some popular options to complete the look

and enhance usability include a console, vanity top, floating vanity or washstand.

Toilets

When considering a toilet, performance is essential. It should meet your everyday needs, operate efficiently and provide additional features that make daily maintenance easier.

You’ll find most toilets on the market fall into one of three categories: one-piece, two-piece or smart. One-piece toilets have a seamless design, with the tank and bowl fused together for a look that is sleek and easier to clean. Two-piece toilets consist of a separate tank and bowl, making them a popular choice for easy installation and maintenance. Smart toilets offer advanced features like bidet functions, automatic flushing, self-cleaning capabilities and customizable settings designed to enhance user comfort, hygiene and convenience.

Another important consideration is your toilet’s shape and height. Elongated bowls provide added comfort while round bowls are a space-saving solution for smaller bathrooms. When it comes to height, standard toilets are suitable for most people, but higher toilets allow for easier standing and sitting accessibility.

An option like American Standard’s line of Champion toilets, engineered to never clog and powerful enough to flush a bucket of golf balls in a single flush, provide cleaner, more efficient flushes so nothing disrupts your daily routine. These DIY-friendly, low-flow toilets use just 1.28 gallons per flush to conserve water. They also feature PowerWash rim technology, which scrubs the bowl with every flush, and unique EverClean Antimicrobial Surface protection to guard against mold, mildew and odorand stain-causing bacteria.

Faucets

Bathroom faucets come in a variety of styles and configurations to suit any design preference. Durable finishes resist tarnishing and scratches, keeping your faucet looking new for years to come. Many models also feature ceramic disc valves for silkysmooth handle operation and water-saving technology to help conserve resources and lower water bills.

A variety of bathroom faucet configurations can meet your bathroom design needs. Designed for sinks with a single-hole or four-inch escutcheon, the monoblock faucet provides easy use with a single-handle design for controlling water volume and temperature. Sinks with three faucet holes spaced four inches apart pair well with a centerset design, providing a compact and space-efficient solution ideal for undermount bathroom sink installations.

If your sink holes are spaced 8-16 inches apart, a widespread design will coordinate well with undermount and vessel style sinks that feature a deck, offering both style and practicality. The vessel faucet is designed for above-counter or vessel sinks, delivering a sleek, contemporary aesthetic that enhances modern bathrooms.

Bathtubs

Whether used for daily hygiene or as a relaxing retreat, the bathtub is a focal point of bathroom design. From classic alcove and elegant freestanding tubs to convenient walk-in options, each type caters to different needs and aesthetics. The secret is determining how you’ll use the tub so you can maximize the features and functionality while complementing your overall design.

You can expect to find a range of features, including ADA compliance for enhanced accessibility, deep soak capabilities for a luxurious bathing experience and slip-resistant surfaces for added safety.

The trim and faucets also play a crucial role in your tub’s overall look and performance. For families, one practical choice is the Aspirations Waterfall Tub Spout from American Standard, which is designed with rounded edges for kid-friendly safety while creating a soothing, spa-like cascade. It also conveniently doubles as a storage shelf or leg rest for shaving.

History of Fourth of July

Although most of us already had this history lesson in school, we probably weren’t really paying attention as the clock ticked closer to recess or the end of the day. But we can’t fully appreciate our freedoms if we don’t know how we got them — and, more importantly, how close we came to losing them. The story of America’s independence is truly fascinating with more historical twists and turns than we can possibly get into here. But at least we can get you started with the basics.

In the 1700s, America wasn’t really a nation of ‘united states.’ Instead, there were 13 colonies with distinct personalities. From 1763 to 1773, Britain’s King George III increasingly placed pressure on the colonies as he and the British Parliament enacted a succession of draconian taxes and laws on them. Excessive taxes on British luxury goods like tea and sugar were designed to benefit the British crown without any regard for the hardships of the colonists. By 1764, the phrase “Taxation without representation is tyranny” spread throughout the colonies as the rallying cry of outrage.

The more the colonists rebelled, the more King George doubled down with force. Imagine if enemy soldiers not only had the right to enter your home but the soldiers could demand that you feed and house them. The Quartering Act of 1765 allowed British soldiers to do just that.

But the Stamp Act of 1765 became the straw that broke the colonists’ backs. Passed by Parliament in March, this act taxed any piece of printed paper, including newspapers, legal documents, ships’ papers — and even playing cards! As the colonial grumbling got louder and bolder, in the fall of 1768, British ships arrived in Boston Harbor as a show of force. Remember, the British Navy dominated the seas all over the world due to the far-reaching presence of the British Empire.

Tensions boiled over on March 5, 1770, in Boston Harbor during a street fight between a group of colonists and British soldiers. The soldiers fired shots that killed 47-year-old Crispus Attucks, the first American and Black man to die along with three other colonists in the Boston Massacre. In 1773, the Boston Tea Party (from which today’s Tea Party Republicans get their name) erupted when colonists disguised as Mohican Indians raided a British ship, dumping all the tea overboard to avoid paying the taxes. Continued pressure led to resistance and the start of the Revolutionary War in the towns of Lexington and Concord when a militia of patriots battled British soldiers on April 19, 1775. Conditions were ripe for American independence.

When the first battles in the Revolutionary War broke out in April 1775, only a handful of colonists wished for total independence from Great Britain, and those who did were considered extremists. However, halfway through the following year, many more colonists had come to lean more toward independence, as a result of growing hostility towards Britain and the spread of revolutionary views like those conveyed in the bestselling pamphlet published in early 1776 by Thomas Paine — “Common Sense.”

On June 7, 1776, the Continental Congress met at the Pennsylvania State House (later Independence Hall) in Philadelphia and Richard Henry Lee, the Virginia delegate, introduced a motion calling for the independence of the colonies. Amid heated debate, Congress rescheduled the vote on Lee’s resolution but appointed a five-man committee — including Thomas Jefferson of Virginia, John Adams of Massachusetts, Roger Sherman of Connecticut, Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania, and Robert R. Livingston of New York — to draft a formal statement justifying the defect from Great Britain.

On July 2, 1776, in a virtually unanimous vote, the Continental Congress voted in favor of Lee’s resolution for independence, and on July 4th, it formally adopted the Declaration of Independence, which had been written largely by Jefferson. Ultimately, the drafting of the Declaration of Independence was a contentious process. After much debate over what to include and what to leave out, Thomas Jefferson, tasked with pulling the document together, envisioned a nation where “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness” crystallized the very meaning of being an American. The document proclaimed the 13 American colonies’ liberation from Britain and reaffirmed their rights as free men — declaring that they were no longer subject (and subordinate) to the monarch of Britain, King George III, and were now united, free, and independent states.

John Adams wrote to his wife Abigail that July 2 “will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival” and that the celebration should include “Pomp and Parade…Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other.”

By an extraordinary coincidence, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams, the only two signatories of the Declaration of Independence later to serve as presidents of the United States, both died on the same day: July 4, 1826, which was the 50th anniversary of the Declaration. Although not a signatory of the Declaration of Independence, James Monroe, another Founding Father who was elected as president, also died on July 4, 1831, making him the third President who died on the anniversary of independence. The only U.S. president to have been born on Independence Day was Calvin Coolidge, who was born on July 4, 1872.
