7 Garden Growing Basics for Beginners

Growing your own produce is an all-around smart practice, from the money you’ll save at the grocery store to the contributions you can make toward a cleaner planet.

Maintaining a garden takes some effort, but it’s a project even a beginner can tackle with ease. Consider these tips to start

You’ll want to place your garden in an area where you see it often so you’re reminded to weed and care for it regularly. Find a flat area you can access easily, where erosion and other pitfalls (including hungry wildlife)

2. Choose between ground and containers. There are pros and cons to gardening in containers vs. the ground, and there’s no universal right choice. Rather, the best garden depends on your goals and preferences. A ground garden usually offers more space and may provide a better growth environment for roots. However, a container garden is often easier to maintain and may be all you need if you wish to

keep in mind the soil you plant in will be the primary source of nutrients for your produce.

stability so plants can root firmly and grow healthy and sturdy to support their bounty. Quality soil also allows for ample drainage. Organic matter like compost, leaf mold or your garden, so be sure you’re situated near a hose. You’ll know it’s time to water when

5. Plan for plenty of sun. A bright, sunny spot is a must, since most vegetables, herbs and fruits depend on six or more hours of sun every day. Remember the sun’s path changes throughout the year, and as trees and foliage grow, they may produce more shade with each growing season.

6. Consider what you’ll grow. Starting with veggies you know you like is a smart starting point since you’ll be pouring sweat equity into making them grow. Over time, you might add new varieties, but early on, keep your focus on foods you know you like so you can see a meaningful return and avoid waste. You’ll also need to consider what you can grow to maturity within your area’s growing season. If necessary, you might want to start transplants you can nurture indoors before moving them outside when the temperatures allow.

7. Plant according to a calendar. Knowing how long it takes different foods to mature will help you create a planting calendar. You don’t want to harvest everything at once, and if you stagger planting and replant what you can, you’ll have a garden that produces food for your family for a longer period of time.

Common Law Marriage and Living

Together Without Marriage

rights even in a home not owned by the surviving spouse.

What if I want to live with my romantic partner without marriage? If you want to live with a romantic partner but do not want to marry, I recommend you be clear to your partner and to others that you are not married and do not plan to marry even though you are living together. I also strongly recommend you cohabitation agreement.

What is a Cohabitation Agreement and Why is it Beneficial? Non-married couples do not have the same rights with respect to property as married couples so it is important to understand what rights you do and do not have if you are sharing bills and living expenses, including contributing to your partner’s mortgage. A cohabitation agreement typically provides information on how property, income, and debt will be divided between the parties during the relationship and if the relationship ends. Another big benefit – a cohabitation agreement details the parties’ agreement that they are NOT married and do not intend to be married. If you are living with your longterm romantic partner at the time of your death, there is a chance he or she will claim you were common law married in order to seek spousal benefits, including a right to live in your home after your death and to share in your retirement benefits. This can wreak havoc on your children or other loved ones, forcing them to spend time and money battling a common law marriage

Key Decisions for Retired Couples

Once you and your spouse retire, you’ll have some decisions to make — decisions that could affect your quality of life in your retirement years. What are these choices?

Here a few of the most important ones:

How much should you withdraw from your retirement accounts? By the time you retire, you may have contributed for decades to an IRA and a 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan. But once you retire, you’ll probably need to draw on these accounts to help pay your living expenses. Consequently, both of you will need to be sure that you don’t withdraw so much each year that you risk running out of money later in your retirement. One common guideline is to aim for an annual withdrawal rate of 4%, but everyone’s situation is different based on age, pre-retirement income, lifestyle, health, travel plans and other factors. (Once you turn 73, or 75 if you were born in 1960 or later, you will have to take certain amounts, based on your age and account balance, from your traditional IRA and traditional 401(k) each year.)

When should you take Social Security? The answer to this question depends on many factors, such as your age and other sources of income. You can take Social Security as early as age 62, but your monthly payments will typically be bigger if you wait until your full retirement age, which will be age 67 if you were born in 1960 or later. And if you can afford to wait even longer, your payments will “max out” when you reach age 70. Your decision on when to take Social Security can affect your spouse — and vice versa. If the lowerearning spouse claims Social Security before their full retirement age — again, age 67 — their own retirement benefit and any potential spousal benefit will be reduced. (Spousal benefits are given to the lower-earning spouse if their full retirement benefit is less than half the other spouse’s full retirement benefit.)

Should you downsize? If you live in a big home and your children are grown, you may find it economical to downsize. Of course, this is also an emotional decision, but you may find that you can save money by moving into a smaller home. Where should you live? Some states are far more expensive to live in than others. You’ll want to weigh your decision carefully, considering the cost of housing, food, income and real estate taxes, transportation and health care in whatever state you choose. Have you finished your estate plans? If not, now is the time. You’ll want to work with your legal professional to create whatever documents are needed — a will, living trust, power of attorney — to help ensure your assets go where you want them to go, and that your financial and health care choices will be protected if you become physically or mentally incapacitated.

Of course, many of these same issues will apply if you are single, divorced or widowed. But if you are married, you and your spouse will want to discuss all your choices and then decide which steps to take. Once you’ve got your plans in place, you may well find that you can fully enjoy your retirement years.

Decorate Your Way to a Festive St. Patrick’s Day 4

DIY projects with a touch of Irish flair

Pairing Shepherd’s pie and potato soup with green pints and Irish delights are surefire signs of St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. Food and drink may be the stars of the show, but a little festive ambiance can transport guests from your dining room table to the streets of Dublin.

A few seasonal touches are all it takes to complement a menu of corned beef and cabbage. Consider these DIY decorations for this year’s St. Patrick’s Day party.

•Set a St. Paddy’s Mood – Show off your holiday spirit for all to see with a homemade wreath that gives your front door a perfect welcoming touch. Cut shamrock shapes out of green construction paper then glue together, edge to edge, to your desired size. Punch a hole in the top shamrock and run string or ribbon through to hold up your work of art.

•The Gift of Green – Lend a helping hand to guests who forget their green with shamrock-shaped pins they can attach to shirts or hats. Wooden shamrocks tend to work best with small pins glued to the back. Arrange these easy party favors near the door so your friends and neighbors can grab one as they enter.

•A Homemade Pot o’ Gold – Send guests chasing the rainbow and reward their adventures with canning jars filled with candies wrapped in gold. Simply spray paint jars green, fill with gold-wrapped candies and place in various gathering areas for easy-to-reach treats.

•Custom Cups –Upgrade boring drinkware with a leprechaun look. Find green cups (plastic or paper) and wrap with black ribbon using hot glue to secure. For a final touch, add a gold sticker as the belt buckle.

Make Your St. Patrick’s Day Spread Green with Envy

Freshen up your St. Patrick’s Day menu with easy, light sandwiches inspired by the traditional color of the festivities. These open-faced noshes can be perfect for lunch, snack time or even as an appetizer for get-togethers with friends and family.

Layered with a smooth cream cheese and mozzarella mixture then topped with crisp cucumber and a stem of green bell pepper, these St. Patrick’s Day Sandwiches are easy and cute, which makes them a fan favorite at nearly any green gathering. They’re also sprinkled with lemon juice to add a little acidity and create a nice, light bite.

Plus, this recipe is quick to make. When you’re in a rush to get everything on the table for the party, it’s easy to throw together and get on the platter in next to no time.

The sandwiches pop off the plate with their bright, seasonal garnishes. While sure to attract attention and have your loved ones asking “Where did you get this idea?” they’re also an easy way to sneak a few vegetables into your kids’ diets. For more festive recipes and ideas at Culinary.net.

Meet The Team

A native New Yorker, Joan Imperato moved to Kingwood in 1982 with her husband, Ralph, and their three children. Embracing the community, they quickly became active members and fell in love with the area.

Joan launched her real estate career in 1985, determined to become a trusted expert in the Kingwood/Humble market. With over 3,500 families served, she is known for her exceptional service and has earned numerous accolades, including the Luminary of Distinction award—making her the first woman in Texas to receive this honor.

Joan is dedicated to her family, especially her 10 fabulous grandchildren. She is a passionate cook and finds joy in bringing family and friends together, especially on visits to the beach on Long Island. Joan is also deeply involved in the community. She has dedicated nearly 20 years to Mothers Against Cancer and Donne Di Domani and has served on several boards.

Since 1982, Joan and her family have been parishioners of St. Martha’s Church. Her commitment to family, her career, and the community has brought her much happiness.

Beth Simpson’s family moved to Kingwood in 1974. She has seen it grow from the small community of her childhood to the vibrant, bustling area it is today. After college and a short stint living out of state, Beth and her husband settled back in Kingwood in 1994, and she quickly started a local pet-sitting company that she operated for twenty years before becoming a Realtor. That history gives her a deep understanding of Kingwood and its neighborhoods, with a special knack for knowing the best “back ways” to get through town. As a transaction coordinator and leasing specialist for the team, Beth’s passion and attention to detail helps families find a home that makes them happy.

Kim Fazzino grew up on a cattle ranch in the Ozarks and met her husband Greg while attending Texas A&M. After graduation, they settled in Kingwood in 1992 and have raised 4 kids in the Livable Forest. Kim is an eternal optimist, animal lover and outdoor enthusiast. In her spare time she can be found running on the greenbelts or riding her Arabian horses. She has been an active member of the Kingwood community having served on school PTA Boards, board of the National Charity League, active in her church and is current Vice President of the Kingwood Horseman’s Association. Kim loves Kingwood and all it has to offer!

A 2nd generation Houston native and Texas A&M University graduate, Greg Fazzino brings almost 40 years of sales and purchasing negotiation experience to his role as a Broker Associate. He holds certifications as a Real Estate Negotiation Expert (RENE) and Accredited Buyer’s Representative (ABR), specializing in guiding clients through both residential and commercial real estate transactions.

An avid Aggie sports fan, Greg enjoys barbecuing and exploring local microbreweries in his free time.

There are many places to live, but only one home. Liz Olsen, originally from Colorado, found hers in Kingwood, TX, falling in love with its tree-lined streets in 2006. She and her husband have raised their four kids in the “livable forest,” enjoying its schools, parks, and greenbelts. An active community member, Liz is involved with Mothers Against Cancer, HOSA, NCL, and various school and sports activities. While she adores Kingwood, she knows the Greater Houston area offers many great places to live. With big determination and a simple goal, she helps her clients find home.

Cindy Steinkamp and her husband Rick have lived in Kingwood for 26 years. With Rick’s 27-year military career, Cindy understands the unique real estate needs of veterans and their families, making her the “go-to” for Veterans & VA loans. She loves connecting buyers and sellers across the region, from Galveston to East Texas, ensuring a smooth process. Her motto is, “There are no dumb questions in real estate for a buyer or a seller.” For her, it’s not just a job—it’s about making the experience as stress-free as possible. The Steinkamps raised three boys in Kingwood—Matt, Alex, and Andy—who have now left Texas for their own successful careers. Longtime members of First Presbyterian Church Kingwood, they now enjoy traveling the world as empty nesters and visiting their boys and their families as often as they can.

5 Tips for New Pet Owners

Welcoming a new pet is exciting, but preparation is needed to provide a loving home and enjoy the unconditional love.

Prepare your furry friend for a new home with these essential tips for firsttime pet owners.

Choose the Right Pet for Your Lifestyle

Consider your living situation, work schedule and personal preferences. Research different breeds to find the one that matches your activity level, living space and family dynamics. Also consider any allergies or sensitivities you or your family may have as some pets may trigger allergies or asthma symptoms.

Set Up Your Home

Before bringing your new pet home,

create a safe and comfortable environment. Start by pet-proofing your home, removing any hazardous substances and securing loose wires or cords. Make sure to store cleaning supplies, medications and toxic plants out of reach. Provide a designated space that includes a cozy bed or crate, food and water bowls and toys.

Create

a Routine

Establish a consistent schedule for feeding, exercise and bathroom breaks. Determine the appropriate amount and frequency of meals for your pet’s age, size and breed. Spend quality time with your pet daily, providing attention, affection and mental stimulation.

Budget for Your Pet’s

Needs

Owning a pet comes with financial

responsibilities. Consider the costs of food, grooming, veterinary care, vaccinations and preventive medications. Additionally, factor in the cost of toys, bedding, litter and other supplies.

Find a Reliable Veterinarian

Regular check-ups and open communication with a local veterinarian can help detect any potential health issues early and ensure your pet receives the best possible care. Ask friends, family or neighbors with pets for provider recommendations and read reviews. Visit potential veterinarians’ offices to meet the staffs, tour the facilities and ask any questions you may have.
