Once harvested from clogging the rivers of southeast Asia, the tendrils of the water-hyacinth plant dry in the sun to a kind of golden brown. Further treatment blanches them to a creamy white that we used to create the bold contrasting stripe pattern in thus rug. The hollow-cored water-hyacinth twine has a natural give under foot that makes for pleasant walking in bare feet.

This classic stripe blends oh so subtly with its white ground because we’ve included the white ground in the cotton of the stripe. The look is classic and comfortable.
We intentionally designed the fabric used to make these cushions for maximum nubby slubby imperfection. Even the tightest weave which uses the thinnest yarns in its weft shows wide variation in the thickness of the yarns even the thickness of the same yarn in different places in the fabric. The result is a subtle texture that denotes an extraordinary richness. Of course the looser weave using a thicker yarn exhibits even greater contrast. Then for a more casual effect we substituted natural jute in the warp to create a perhaps more carefree, natural color and add more contrast to the slubby cotton.

This tight flat weave basket is made from top to bottom from creamy toned sun-bleached seagrass. The base and coiled handles, too. A closely guarded family secret allows extended family of Vietnamese basket weavers to achieve the subtle black stripes without resort to modern chemicals.
We employ a double wall flat weave technique to achieve this basket the resulting density of the sea grass gives the basket sufficient integrity to stand on its own and a visible heft that denotes a dedication to quality construction.

Seagrass typically dries to a gentle brown. To achieve the stripes in this basket we sun bleach the seagrass further until it’s a creamy white. Then we weave the two colors in a dense flat weave with matching coil handles and a solid flat weave bottom. The result is a natural color. No toxic dyes.
Our artisans coil natural banana bark around a central banana strand core. The result is a container with unusual depth of color variation and unusual heft.
We challenge our family of weavers to execute some of the most complicated and eyecatching patterns. These tall and slender water hyacinth containers make excellent hampers or collectors for life’s necessities.

We combined a decorative palm cross stich with the simple sea grass woven grid to camouflage the quarter inch diameter wire that gives these baskets structure. They fold flat when not in use and spring into shape as sturdy cubes in seconds.
The incredibly versatile bamboo plant gives us both the thick, sturdy straps for weaving our Bahmi ™ basket series high in the mountains of Java, and, also, the toothpick-thin strips used to form up our Liana ™ and Irawaddy ™ containers. After refining and softening the versatile jute threads can be bleached white or dyed in colors. For our Melia ™ ziggy pattern, we have bleached the soft threads white and then braided them into a rope that is sewn into the shape of a place mat. We’ve used a black thread to contrast with the bleached jute and then, just for fun, we let the sewing pattern run wild creating all kinds of variations in the density of the stitching.

Our Jasper ™ taper holders are hand forged in iron and finished with a rust proof coating. Starting with iron rod, our craftsman must heat and hammer each piece to achieve the desired length and detail. To make these unique bowls we first smother clear glass with molten glass with an olive tinted hue. After slowly cooling the melded materials, our artisans carve away strips of the olive exterior to reveal the clear glass beneath. Then, to soften the effect of light passing through the hand etched stripes we gently sand the exterior glass. The process is painstaking and laborious, but, we think, the result is stunning.

NEW ACCOUNTS
Welcome to a Design Ideas® company! Customers in the states of CA & WA are required to submit a complete resale certificate. Please let us know how we can help you get started.
MINIMUM ORDER AMOUNT
We request a minimum first-time order of $300. Subsequent orders must exceed $150. For sample orders under the minimum, please contact your sales representative.
MINIMUM QUANTITY
We sell our products in minimum quantities (noted as “min” in our item listings). You must order in multiples of the minimum. We will not break minimums. If you do not order in multiples of the minimum, we reserve the right to bring your order into compliance by decreasing or canceling the item(s) in question.
ORDER CONFIRMATION
We process all orders within 24 hours of receipt, and we provide an order acknowledgement (emailed to the address you provide) within 48 hours. Please review & notify us if any changes need to be made. If we have a question, we will reach out to you.
PAYMENT TERMS
To help support our independent retail customers we extend Net 60 terms to all returning customers in good standing and first-time customers with orders under $1,000. The same terms apply to orders over $1,000 but we require 3 trade references & 1 bank reference for Net 60 terms. Without this documentation we require payment by credit card. To provide a credit card, call us. To submit credit references please email us. Accounts inactive for 12 months or longer must submit new references. We charge a $25 fee for returned payment checks.
CREDIT CARDS
We accept Visa, MasterCard, Discover & American Express. We authorize cards up to 4 days prior to shipment but cards will not be charged until the order ships. If using a debit card, your bank may use the authorization to take the amount from the account. If you wish to pay by credit card after shipment, we must apply a 3% fee.
CUSTOMER SERVICE GUIDE
SHIPMENTS
Orders are shipped FOB Springfield, IL by the best/cheapest method, unless you specified otherwise. Freight quotes will be provided for all orders containing items marked “Special Handling”, if we estimate that the freight will exceed 15%. Freight charges are based on both weight & dimensions. An invoice with tracking information is emailed when your order ships.
BACKORDER POLICY
We hold partial shipments until at least $75 of the merchandise is available. Any backorders over 60 days after the first shipment of your order or if the backorder is under $75, we will email for aproval before shipping. We ship backorders under the same payment terms & freight methods as the original order.
INVOICES & PAYMENTS
We email invoices 1 business day after the order ships. If you have questions, need to change or add invoice contacts, or wish to make a payment, call us. If paying by check, please mail to: P.O. Box 2967, Springfield, IL 62708
REPLACEMENTS & RETURNS
Missing item? Wrong color? Broken? Defective? In any case, we require damages/defects to be reported within 30 days of the date you receive the merchandise. RETURN POLICY
Merchandise may be returned up to 30 days after receiving it. You assume freight costs for the return shipment. We credit your account only for merchandise that has been reported to our customer service department, received by us in good condition, & in the original packaging (ie: no retail stickering). We will charge your account a 10% restocking fee for this service.
PRODUCT QUALITY
Many of our products are hand-made by craftsmen around the world & we stand behind the quality. We expect variations in color & finish, and you should, too. Products fashioned from recycled materials generally retain some of the marks from their former lives; bubbles & fissures add character & depth. Enjoy their uniqueness! If any item does not fit within these guidelines, please email or call us.
ONLINE SALES POLICY
Design Ideas expressly prohibits the unauthorized sale of our products on Amazon, eBay, Etsy, Jet, Wal-Mart, 11 Main, or any other online marketplace site. Retail Partners may sell our merchandise online if & only if: (1) the website is proprietary to the Retail Partner (2) the website does not allow third party sellers to list products for sale on the site & (3) the Retail Partner complies with Design Ideas MAPP policy.
