INTRODUCTION
Designing Possibilities, Creating Value Rhea Matute Executive Director
How can we raise the consciousness of how we live and create in the world?
DESIGN CENTER OF THE PHILIPPINES
16
“We hope this value creation platform can support our local farming communities, develop meaningful products, and create a positive impact in the lives of many.”
In 2019, we asked this question to spark a conversation and challenge people to think differently. Beginning with three collaborators, we transformed discarded pineapple leaves to produce the first Pinyapel collection for food packaging applications. That collaboration output received recognition at the prestigious D&AD Impact Awards that same year. Under the category of Future Impact in Environment and Sustainability, the award helped validate the change we wanted to create in the world. We have come a long way from taking that leap with our Pinyapel pioneering partners. We now expand this collaboration through the Pinyapel Flagship Project. We hope this value creation platform can support our local farming communities, develop meaningful products, and create a positive impact in the lives of many. Pinyapel also hopes to cultivate pride and innovation in working with agricultural waste-related materials. Designers and manufacturers continuously need new and inspiring materials to build with, akin to learning a new vocabulary.

It’s exciting to see the concepts and forms makers will create out of these materials. And when designing with the principles of the circular economy in mind, we can restructure the current industrial system for the better interest of everyone. Pinyapel is a celebration of Philippine ingenuity, creativity, and generosity of spirit. May this initiative empower and send a burst of positive energy to everyone as people witness how these objects inspire joy and purpose in the world.

The Landscape: a quick overview ▸ The Philippines is one of the top producers and exporters of pineapples in the world. ▸ Industry employs many people and supports local communities. ▸ Pineapple leaves go unused and create a lot of waste. ▸ Pineapple leaves are often burned, releasing harmful emissions into the atmosphere.

Materials from Discarded Pineapple Leaves From farm to product, it is the continuous development and collaboration among partners that have resulted in innovative applications of these raw materials.
Fiber
Paper
Removed from the pineapple leaves, fiber can be brushed or unbrushed.
Paper can be folded, cut, and woven (paper twine) to produce an assortment of products: placemats and runners, baskets and bags, stationeries, and lighting fixtures.
Brushed fiber can be intertwined to create carpets, tapestries, jute sacks, burlaps, or cloths. They can also be made into woven and nonwoven fabrics, or simply turned into yarn. Unbrushed fiber have a rough texture that work well with weave baskets. And similar to brushed fiber, tapestries, yarns, and woven and nonwoven fabrics can come from this type of fiber.
Pulp The by-product of leaf fiber waste, pulp can be made into a variety of home and furniture items. It can also be molded into architectural panels and acoustic boards. Pineapple pulp can be combined with polylactic acid (PLA) to create a biocomposite for a range of uses. This includes creating new shapes using an injection mold machine to scale production.
The material may even be printed over, with wallpaper and packaging being prime examples.

Inspired by the Fibonacci number sequencing with the golden ratio, spirals expand from the center and multiply to form a pattern. 46
The tagline bears the values of this initiative: creating value out of agricultural waste materials such as discarded pineapple leaves, supporting the livelihood of farming communities and sharing prosperity to all partners, and caring for the environment.
SUB-BRANDS
The two sub brands present the two production categories: artisanal and industrial.

The colors are a nod to the colors of the pineapple. Yellow complements the logo like a burst of sunshine, supported by secondary colors in the palette.
“In developing the Pinyapel identity, it felt important to communicate first and foremost, the connection to the pineapple, which is really the genesis. The color choice is emblematic of the pineapple, but also speaks to the Filipino people, their culture and vibrant heritage. The first spark of inspiration was the pinya folklore about the thousand eyes —and it felt important to incorporate that into the logo. We were able to pack a lot of ideas into just that simple element.”

Reshaping the Vista
An interview with
Tony Gonzales Creative Director PINYAPEL FLAGSHIP PROJECT, SSX 2022
Afternoon
Tony Gonzales has a long and storied career in design and papermaking. He’s been in the papermaking industry for almost three decades, from finding his voice as a young printmaker in Manila in the late 80s to helping his father establish a handmade paper mill back home in Albay in the early 90s. His work in designing and innovating with paper catapulted his multi-awarded career in furniture and product design. Apart from being a designer, manufacturer, and exporter, Tony has been mentoring young designers through product development workshops in different continents. He also curates international design exhibitions that highlight the best of Philippine product design. It is in Pinyapel where all these experiences converge.
59
How did you select these diverse partners for the Pinyapel Flagship Project? We had to rethink the process given our goals. We expanded the selection of product development partners to include industrial manufacturers that could convert tons of discarded pineapple leaves and their fiber into useful materials.
How did you help develop the design and curation of these products and collections? From the perspective of local craft skills (basket and handloom weaving), we looked at new material to develop for them to use. We made paper twine for them. We also wanted paper artisans to experiment with this material and see how it can be reimagined. For our industrial partners, they have already been developing pineapple thread into fabric for mass production, which is different from the pinya for the traditional barong and gown. Similarly, we wanted designers to work with these fabrics for their clothing lines.
Pinyapel
Lookbook
What are the interesting characteristics of pineapple fiber? Pinya has its own character and qualities compared to other fibers. It has a sheen, softness, and strength for paper. It may be challenging to some who haven’t worked with this new material, but it’s part of the process of introducing an eco-friendly alternative to their current set of materials. Why is bringing industrialization to craft a key component of the program?
60
Being part of the industry for a long time, my goal is to help build an industrial pulp mill for three reasons: 1) to standardize pulp quality, 2) to make handmade paper more affordable, and 3) to ease the production process for artisanal makers who want to purchase from industrial paper mills. We hope to make this material accessible to more people and be of value to their business.

products, this can be the Philippines’ contribution to finding sustainable sources.
Beyond aesthetics and material, how can design improve life? It can develop awareness in the way we live. Everything around us—be it a toothbrush or a mobile phone—has a designer behind it, which many people overlook because they seem so commonplace. These were designed and made with specifications in mind: dimensions, use of material, kind of skills or manufacturing involved, etc. But let’s also think about the people who need our designs the most. How can we improve their way of life? We need to challenge, support, and compensate our designers. Our government and manufacturers should invest in these ideas to increase its impact.
How can material development influence product and design innovation?
How do you imagine Philippine design to be with this new material?
With the material’s viability. For designers like myself, if there is an alternative material that’s eco-friendly, affordable, and at par with the current material we use, it jumpstarts our creativity and desire to try it. When we experiment and see how a new material can help shape new forms, it helps in the product development process.
It’s all about supply and demand. It’s wonderful to push for pinya because we have a vast supply.
Plus, in this day and age, how can we help reduce waste? We have pineapple being cultivated for food, but the leaves are just thrown away. If we can produce these into pulp, paper, fabric, and other fiber-based
What we are selling now is a dream. Hopefully, when this becomes successful, we can work with other agricultural wastes. People will then realize there’s no such thing as agricultural waste to begin with since we’ve already extended its value, coupled with our experience and technology to convert them.
Mid
Afternoon
What comes to mind when locally produced and designed products become ubiquitous? Coming across a Philippine-made basket or furniture in Europe just makes me proud. For years, we have been successful in bringing our designers and products to the West. Now my goal is to make our products widely available in the Philippines. That’s why I’m very passionate about making these fibers easily accessible to designers and manufacturers. Together, we can create something useful and valuable. Now, how do we bring the product into consumers’ homes? By bringing it to the market. Designers and manufacturers, we need to ask ourselves, “For whom? For what? For where?” To create products for the mass market, you should be ready to sell in thousands and at competitive prices. The reason why we have industrial manufacturers in the network is because it can’t be done by artisans and craft-based companies alone. The manufacturers of Pinyapel biocomposite plastic and textiles can support the aspirations of our MSMEs to grow and create products for the local market. And not only are we exporting pineapple fruits, we can also bring our innovative products and design solutions to the rest of the world. Nothing is left to waste.

The Long View I’ve always felt that design and creativity is a personal act. I would like to see it as a reflection of the country and not just a slogan. It is a collective responsibility that each must act on.

We have all our partners to thank in helping bring this vision to life and pushing this project forward. Tony Gonzales, Pinyapel Flagship Project Creative Director, brings his decades of experience in product design, entrepreneurship, and manufacturing to the forefront of this endeavor. Together with our product development partners in artisanal and industrial manufacturing, they brought new insights and possible applications of new materials from discarded pineapple leaves. They keep us excited for other possibilities.

The D&AD Impact Award, with the generous mentorship of Kwame Taylor-Hayford on design and sustainability, has helped us expand our horizons. It continuously challenges us with questions to ponder and really helps us move closer to the heart of why we have this initiative to begin with. For what bigger purpose? For whom will this greatly benefit? And how do we design and articulate these dreams and aspirations for others to respond with equal passion? Kwame has helped our team in the Design Center not only to dig deeper into our local context, but also to step back and adapt a globalized vision of our work. One way or another, we will all connect. Seeing how everything has come together and culminated in this exhibition, we see how critical it is now to build an industrial pulp making facility in proximity to our farming communities. There is so much work to do and impact to deliver. We have to formalize and institutionalize all these lessons we’ve learned in order to support livelihoods and scale our industries in accordance with the principles of a circular economy: less waste, reuse and repurpose, and regenerate the environment. As mentioned in the introduction, this is a celebration of our ingenuity, creativity, and generosity of spirit. To have our creations build and support the lives of our fellow Filipinos and offer sustainable solutions to the world. We truly hope this endeavor continues to be a catalyst in transforming the way we live. That the ripple effect of this project can touch people’s lives and inspire many more. I believe design has that power.
