Mastercard was founded in 1966 as the Interbank Card Association (ICA), a cooperative of banks aiming to compete with BankAmericard (later Visa). It was created to standardize and expand the use of credit cards across banks. In 1969, the organization was renamed "Master Charge" and later became "MasterCard" in 1979. Over the decades, Mastercard evolved from a traditional card issuer to a global technology company in the payments industry, introducing innovations such as contactless payments and digital wallets. It went public in 2006, further accelerating its global expansion and technological advancements in secure, fast, and inclusive payment solutions.
