GLOBAL MELA Over 15,000 attended the two days fun-filled Southeast’s Biggest 14th South Asian Community Mela

The 14th Global Mela was a major success attracting over 15,000 community members at the Global Mall in Norcross, Georgia on Saturday October 24 and Sunday October 25 2015. The mammoth Mela has become the largest free carnival event for the South Asian community, with over 42 booth vendors and attendees from all over the Southeast. The 2-day event was kicked off with a warm welcome by Shiv Aggarwal and emcee Kiran Sethi Xtrahot djs Entertainment. The dignitaries joined Shiv and his family in Lord Ganesh puja and a lamp lighting ceremony by Siddhi Vinayak Mandir’s pundit Gyan Praksh Upadhyay. Indian tech industry contributed nearly 411,000 jobs to the US

Washington (IANS) Dispelling the myth that Indian tech companies take away jobs from US professionals, a new report said the Indian tech industry contributed nearly 411,000 jobs to the US economy this year. The Indian tech industry also helped American firms to bring better, innovative, cost-competitive solutions to improve their global market, said the report by the National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM). Titled “Contributions of India’s Tech Industry to the US

Economy”, the report was released by India’s Commerce Minister Nirmala Sitharaman here on Monday ahead of the first Indo-US Strategic and Commercial Dialogue.

According to the report, India-based IT companies providing services to American businesses and other customers invested more than $2 billion in 2011-2013; paid $22.5 billion in taxes to the US Treasury in the last five years; and today support more than direct and indirect 411,000 jobs in the US. A majority of these job are held by US citizens and permanent residents, said the report.

It also documented charitable activities by Indian IT services companies in the US through volunteers, scholarships and grants such as a $35 million gift from Tata Consultancy Services to Carnegie Mellon University announced last month. Sitharaman said Indian

Acid attack survivors aim to take cafe success to other cities - Women Courage Award in US

New Delhi (IANS) Riding the success of an Agra cafe run by acid scarred survivors, the gutsy women have now decided to spread their wings and take their achievement to three other cities, including the national capital.

Triumphing over tragedy, the five women involved in the cafe are determined to move on in life and are looking forward to implement their unique pay-as-you-want-model to motivate many others like them.

The three new outlets being set up are in Lucknow, Kanpur and Delhi.

The concept of the cafe is unique in the sense that no rates are fixed by them. People pay what they wish to.

“With more such cafes, we want to help as many acid attack survivors as we can. I feel everyone has a potential to succeed. it’s just how you hone and help them that matters,” Laxmi, said the face of the Stop Acid Attacks campaign. Laxmi is also one of the main founding members of the Sheroes Hangout cafe.

“It feels great that the concept that started on a social networking site shaped up really well and is now serving people,” said an emotional Laxmi, who received a 2014 International Women of Courage award

White House launches anti-bullying campaign in Hindi, Punjabi, Urdu Washington (IANS) The White House has teamed up with a Sikh and an Asia Pacific community group to launch a public awareness campaign to address bullying in six languages including Hindi, Punjabi and Urdu. The resources for the "Act To Change" campaign are also available in Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese as one out of three in the Asian American and Pacific Islander

Washington (IANS) An Indian grandfather slammed to the ground by an Alabama police officer last February told him "no English" five times and said "India" three times, according to US prosecutors. Sureshbhai Patel, who had arrived days earlier from India to take care of his grandson, also pointed to his son's home and kept trying to walk officers toward the home, Assistant US Attorney Robert Posey told a Madison jury Tuesday.

Patel, who does not speak English, made no sudden movements, he said in the prosecution's opening statement at the retrial of former Madison Officer Eric Parker charged with deprivation of rights under color of law, according to local Al.com. Defence attorney Robert Tuten, on the other hand, told the jury that the escalation of force was largely the fault of Patel. "When you come to the US we expect you to follow our laws and speak our language," said Tuten. "Mr. Patel bears as much responsibility for this as anyone." Patel speaks Gujarati and has testified he does not understand English. But Tuten said Patel understands the word "stop," yet he walked two steps, then seven steps and then nine more steps as police attempted to question him. Tuten said Patel reached for his pockets, which could have contained a weapon. "He refused to take his hands out of his pockets."

Federal prosecutors told the jury that Parker didn't bring up whether Patel put his hands in his pockets until after he had to explain the awkward leg sweep. Posey asked the jury to review the evidence and decide whether there was any danger to the officer. "In this case, the evidence will show that Parker's use of force was unreasonable and he knew it."

Is Cancelled Debt Taxable Generally, debt that is forgiven or canceled by a lender is considered taxable income by the IRS and must be included as income on your tax return.

Examples include a debt for which you are personally liable such as mortgage debt, credit card debt, and in some instances, student loan debt. When that debt is forgiven, negotiated down (when you pay less than you owe), or canceled you will receive Form 1099C, Cancellation of Debt, from your financial institution or credit union. Form 1099-C shows the amount of canceled or forgiven debt that was reported to the IRS. If you and another person were jointly and severally liable for a canceled debt, each of you may get a Form 1099-C showing the entire amount of the canceled debt.

Give the office a call if you have any questions regarding joint liability of canceled debt. Creditors who forgive $600 or more of debt are required to issue this form. If you receive a Form 1099-C and the information is incorrect, contact the lender to make corrections. If you receive a Form 1099-C, don't ignore it. You may not have to report that entire amount shown on Form 1099-C as income. The amount, if any, you must report depends on all the facts and circumstances. Generally, however, unless you meet one of the exceptions or exclusions discussed below, you must report any taxable canceled debt reported on Form 1099-C as ordinary income:  Form 1040 or Form 1040NR, if the debt is a non business debt;  Schedule C or Schedule C-EZ (Form 1040), if the debt is related to a nonfarm sole proprietorship;  Schedule E (Form 1040), if debt is related to nonfarm rental real property;  Form 4835, if the debt is related to a farm rental activity for which you use Form 4835 to report farm rental income based on crops or livestock produced by a tenant;  Schedule F (Form 1040), if the debt is farm debt and you are a farmer.

Exceptions and Exclusions If you've had debt forgiven or canceled this year and receive a Form 1099-C, you might qualify for an exception or exclusion. If your canceled debt meets the requirements for an exception or exclusion, then you don't used: need to report your canceled debt on your tax return.

Under the federal tax code, there are five exceptions and four exclusions for tax year 2015. Here are the five most commonly Note: The Mortgage Debt Relief Act of 2007, which applied to debt forgiven in calendar years 2007 through 2014, allowed taxpayers to exclude income from the discharge of debt on their principal residence. Up to $2 million of forgiven debt was eligible for this exclusion ($1 million if married filing separately) and debt reduced through mortgage restructuring, as well as mortgage debt forgiven in connection with a foreclosure, also qualified for the relief. 1. Amounts specifically excluded from income by law such as gifts, bequests, devises or inheritances In most cases, you do not have income from canceled debt if the debt is canceled as a gift, bequest, devise, or inheritance. For example, if an acquaintance or family member loaned you money (and for whom you signed a promissory note) died and relieved you of the obligation to pay back the loan in his or her will, this exception would apply.

2. Cancellation of certain student loans Certain student loans provide that all or part of the debt incurred to attend a qualified educational institution will be canceled if the person who received the loan works for a certain period of time in certain professions for any of a broad class of employers.

If your student loan is canceled as the result of this type of provision, the cancellation of this debt is not included in your gross income.

3. Canceled debt, that if it were paid by a cash basis taxpayer, would be deductible: If you use the cash method of accounting, then you do not realize income from the cancellation of debt if the payment of the debt would have been a deductible expense. For example, in 2014, you obtain accounting services for your farm using credit. In 2015, due to financial troubles you are not able to pay off your farm debts and your accountant forgives a portion of the amount you owe for her services. If you use the cash method of accounting you do not include the canceled debt as income on your tax return because payment of the debt would have been deductible as a business expense.

4. Debt canceled in Title 11 bankruptcy: Debt canceled in a Title 11 bankruptcy case is not included in your income.

5. Debt canceled during insolvency: Do not include a canceled debt as income if you were insolvent immediately before the cancellation.

In the eyes of the IRS, you would be considered insolvent if the total of all of your liabilities was more than the FMV of all of your assets immediately before the cancellation. For purposes of determining insolvency, assets include the value of everything you own (including assets that serve as collateral for debt and exempt assets which are beyond the reach of your creditors under the law, such as your interest in a pension plan and the value of your retirement account). E.g. You owe $25,000 in credit card debt, you negotiate it down to $5,000.

You have no other debts and your assets are worth $15,000. Your canceled debt is $20,000. Your insolvency amount is $10,000, you are only required to report the $10,000 on your tax return. If you exclude canceled debt from income under one of the exclusions listed above, you must reduce certain tax attributes (certain credits, losses, basis of assets, etc.), within limits, by the amount excluded. If this is the case, then you must file Form 982, Reduction of Tax Attributes Due to Discharge of Indebtedness (and Section 1082 Basis Adjustment), to report the amount qualifying for exclusion and any corresponding reduction of those tax attributes

Social at Work 'Facebook At Work' to let you chat with colleagues New York (IANS) Not allowed to use Facebook at work? That may change in near future as Facebook at Work - designed specifically for communicating with colleagues - comes along.

The tool has been in beta since January, but the pilot program is ending, and the company is likely to launch a premium version of the interoffice network by the end of the year, Re/code reported project head Julien Codorniou as saying.

Facebook has been using a version of Facebook at Work internally for years.

More than 100 companies are using Facebook at Work as part of the beta. Many of those companies are just now starting to expand the product internally.

Heineken, a leading lager beer company, for example, has been testing the product with just 40 of its top executives, but plans to expand Facebook at Work to all 550 US employees by the end of September.

Linio, a Latin American e-commerce company, is expanding the product internally from 200 to 2,000 employees by the end of the month.

Facebook may cash in on the "familiarity".

"If somebody comes into the company, they know how to use this tool from day one. So training cost is zero. That’s important,” Ryan Holmes, CEO of Hootsuite, which is part of the beta group, was quoted as saying.

Facebook will need to convince employers that green-lighting Facebook use among the staff won’t result in a loss of productivity.

"It is unrealistic that organizations try to lock people out of social. It is like telling people that they can’t have their own personal phone,” Holmes noted.

While one woman in the pair reported never cheating on her partner during a committed relationship, the other reported having cheated on at least two occasions. Leivers asked men to judge which woman in each pair was likely to be more faithful. The task was carried out twice with different groups of men. Just by looking at women's faces, men's judgment on faithfulness was accurate 55 to 59 percent of the

time. She said the level of accuracy was "statistically significant but modest", ABC science reported. "We do not expect them to be 100 percent accurate when they are literally just looking at someone's face for a few seconds," Leivers was quoted as saying. "The fact that they are showing any accuracy from this limited information is pretty cool," she said.

The new findings provided some evidence that human males had evolved adaptations to prevent cuckoldry by distinguishing women who were more likely to be unfaithful in a relationship, Leivers said.

According to researchers, sex can never trigger a heart attack and for those who has suffered one, its is absolutely safe to resume sexual activity.

"Based on our data, it seems very unlikely that sexual activity is a relevant trigger of heart attack,” said Dietrich Rothenbacher, professor and chair of the institute of epidemiology and medical biometry at Ulm University in Ulm, Germany. According to the researchers, sexual activity generally involves moderate physical activity comparable to climbing two staircases or taking a brisk walk. "Less than half of men and less than a third of women are getting information about sexual activity after heart attack from their doctors.

It is important to reassure patients that they need not be worried and should resume their usual sexual activity.”

To reach this conclusion, the researchers looked at 536 heart disease patients between the age 30 and 70 to evaluate sexual activity in the 12 months before a heart attack. During 10 years of follow up, 100 adverse cardiovascular events occurred in patients in the study.

Sexual activity was not a risk factor for subsequent adverse cardiovascular events. Researchers also evaluated the timing of the last sexual activity before the heart attack. Only 0.7 percent reported sex within an hour before their heart attack. "In comparison, over 78 percent reported that their last sexual activity occurred more than 24 hours before the heart attack.”

London (IANS) If you want to remain fit and healthy, try to go for frequent breaks from prolonged sitting at workplace or home as daily morning exercise alone may not help you ward off the ill-effects of sitting for long hours.

For the first time, researchers from King's College London have shown that increasing the levels of physical activity is likely to be much less effective at reducing prolonged sitting than directly attempting to decrease sitting time. “These findings will be of interest to researchers and practitioners designing new ways to reduce prolonged sitting,” said lead researcher Dr Benjamin Gardner from King's College London.

The team searched the existing literature on trials of interventions that sought to reduce sitting time. The team then categorized these studies according to their effectiveness and examined the strategies that had been used in each trial to try to reduce sitting.

Some of the promising interventions included the provision of sit-stand desks at work.

Even when used in isolation, other techniques such as encouraging people to keep records of their own sitting time, setting individual goals for limiting sitting time, and using prompts and cues to remind people to stop them sitting were also found to help reduce sitting time.

In view of their study, the researchers now recommend that sitting time should be viewed as a separate behavior change target to physical activity. “The ill-effects of high levels of sitting may prove to be especially damaging given that so many people sit for long periods,” added professor Stuart Biddle from Victoria University in Australia and co-author of the study.

Previous studies and reviews have shown that higher levels of sitting are linked with cancer, diabetes, heart disease and even an early death, independently of whether a person takes regular exercise.

The results can be used by public health workers and policymakers responsible for designing new interventions to reduce sitting time and improve the overall health of those who may sit for prolonged periods.

The paper appeared in the journal Health Psychology Review.

New Delhi (IANS) Owing by the surge in social media usage among Indians, one-third of the country's below-35 people feel more comfortable socializing online than in real life, a new survey has revealed.

The survey conducted by Kissanpur reveals that 65 percent respondents in Bengaluru said they are more comfortable with virtual socializing, followed by 33 percent respondents from Mumbai reiterating the same.

As many as 70 percent of the respondents in Bengaluru and 43 percent in Mumbai say they get to know about the lives of their friends and relatives mainly online.
